The pulse features of a bubble have a close connection with the boundary condition. When a bubble moves near a rigid wall, it will be attracted by the Bjerknes force of the wall, and a jet pointing at the wall will be generated. In real application, the bubble may move under the combined action of walls in different directions when it forms at the corner of a pipe or at the bottom of a dam. The motion of the bubble shows complex and nonlinear characteristics under these conditions. In order to investigate the bubble pulse features near complex walls, a horizontal wall and a vertical wall are put into the experimental water tank synchronously, and an electric circuit with 200 voltages is designed to generate discharge bubbles, and then experimental study on the bubble pulse features under the combined action of horizontal and vertical walls is carried out. The influences of the combined action of two walls on the bubble shape, pulse period, moving trace and inside jet are obtained by changing the distances from bubble center to the two walls. It aims at providing references for the relevant theoretical and numerical research. 展开更多

A three-dimensional numerical model based on the potential theory was developed to study the oblique wave action on vertical walls. A source term inside the domain was used to generate incident waves and outgoing waves were dissipated by sponge layers and transmitted by radiation boundaries. The finite difference method was used to solve the governing equations and boundary conditions in the regular transformed domain in σ-coordinate. Satisfactory agreements between the numerical predictions and experimental results of wave force were obtained. It is concluded that the maximum wave force acting on the vertical walls is induced by the obliquely incident waves rather than the normally incident waves. 展开更多

In this paper, the principle of mirror image is used to transform the problem of wave diffraction from a circular cylinder in front of orthogonal vertical walls into the problem of diffraction of four symmetric incident waves from four symmetrically arranged circular cylinders, and then the eigenfunction expansion of velocity potential and Grafs addition theorem are used to give the analytical solution to the wave diffraction problem. The relation of the total wave force on cylinder to the distance between the cylinder and orthogonal vertical walls and the incidence angle of wave is also studied by numerical computation. 展开更多

The characteristics of wave forces are studied based on physical model tests with regular waves. The ratio of obliquely incident wave forces to normally incident wave forces on unit length of a vertical wall is related with various factors. A linear reduction of the mean force of obliquely incident waves is confirmed with an increase in the relative caisson length. Also the characteristics of reflection coefficient of diagonal waves are discussed. 展开更多

Regular and irregular wave forces acting on vertical walls are studied by a previously developed numerical model. The computed wave forces are compared with the available experimental data to verify the numerical model, and satisfactory agreements are obtained. The variation of wave forces with incident angles and the shape of simultaneous pressure distribution are investigated, and the comparisons between numerical results and Goda' s predictions are also carried out. It is concluded that the maximum wave forces acting on the unit length of vertical wall is often induced by the obliquely incident waves instead of normally incident waves, while Goda' s formula may be inapplicable for oblique wave incidence. The shape of simultaneous pressure distribution is not significantly influenced by incident angles, and it can be favorably predicted by Goda' s formula. When regular wave heights are taken as the same as irregular wave height H1%, the irregular wave forces Ph. 1% are slightly larger than regular wave forces in most cases. 展开更多

Based on the 2nd order cnoidal wave theory, the characters of shallow water standing waves and their action on vertical walls are studied in this paper. The theoretical expressions of the wave surface elevation in front of and the wave pressure on the vertical wall are obtained. In order to verify the theoretical results, model tests were made in the State Key Laboratory of Coastal and Offshore Engineering at DUT. For the wave surface elevation in front of the wall and the wave forces on the wall at the moment when the wave surface at the wall surface goes down to the bottom of the wave trough, the calculated results coincide quite well with the experimental results. For the wave forces on the wall at the moment when the wave surface at the wall surface goes up to the top of the wave crest, the theoretical expressions are modified by the experimental results. For the convenience of practical use, calculations are made for the wave conditions which usually occur in enginering practice by use of the investigated results obtained in this paper. Empirical formulas are fitted with these calculated results for designers to use. 展开更多

The previous study conducted by Li(2022)demonstrates that the Goda graph can be adequately represented by a solitary-wave-like form across the entire range of relative water depth, with the exception of the extremely shallow zone. However,it remains uncertain whether this form is equally effective when applied to test data generated by irregular waves,as the Goda graph was initially developed based on overtopping data from regular wave tests.Additionally,it is unclear whether this form is suitable for formulating overtopping discharge at composite vertical walls. In order to address these questions,a 2D overtopping experiment was conducted, incorporating both simple and composite types of vertical walls, with various relative water depths across the entire range, excluding the extremely shallow zone.A novel analysis procedure was developed, which proved to be highly productive and can be considered a general method for data fitting.Ultimately, the study yielded two conclusions:(1)the solitary-wave-like form is remarkably effective in formulating overtopping test data generated by irregular waves, regardless of whether the vertical wall is simple or composite,and(2)the resulting formulas exhibit definitely better performance compared with existing formulas. 展开更多

In this present study, we analyzed the effects of Prandtl and Jacob numbers and dimensionless thermal conductivity on the velocity profiles in media (porous and liquid). The transfers in the porous medium and the liquid film are described respectively by the improved Wooding model and the classical boundary layer equations. The mesh of the digital domain is considered uniform in the transverse and longitudinal directions. The advection and diffusion terms are discretized with a back-centered and centered scheme respectively. The coupled systems of algebraic equations thus obtained are solved numerically using an iterative line-by-line relaxation method of the Gauss-Seidel type. The results show that the parameters relating to the thermal problem (the dimensionless thermal conductivity, the Prandtl (Pr) and Jacob (Ja) numbers) have no influence on the dimensionless speed, although the thermal and hydrodynamic problems are coupled. Via the heat balance equation. The results obtained show that the parameters relating to the thermal problem have no influence on the dimensionless speed, although the thermal and hydrodynamic problems are coupled via the heat balance equation. So, at first approximation with the chosen constants, we can solve the hydrodynamic problem independently of the thermal problem. 展开更多

Bubble motions and bubble-wall interactions in stagnant liquid were experimentally investigated by high-speed CCD and PIV technique with the main feature parameters such as E?tv?s numbers Eo = 0.98–1.10, Morton number Mo = 3.21 × 10^(-9)and Reynolds numbers Re = 180 ~ 190. The effect of bubble injecting frequency and the distance S between the gas injection nozzle and the wall on the statistical trajectory of bubbles, average velocity distribution of flow field and Reynolds shear stress were studied in detail. It was shown that the combination of bubble injecting frequency and the distance S caused different bubble motion forms and hydrodynamic characteristics. When the normalized initial distance was very little, like S*≈ 1.2(here S*= 2S/d_e, and deis the bubble equivalent diameter), bubbles ascended in a zigzag trajectory with alternant structure of high and low speed flow field around the bubbles, and the distribution of positive and negative Reynolds shear stress looked like a blob. With the increase of distance S*, bubbles' trajectory would tend to be smooth and straight from the zigzag curve. Meanwhile, with the increase of bubble injecting frequency, the camber of bubble trajectory at 20<y<60 mm had a slight increase due to the inhibitory effect from the vertical wall. Under larger spacing, such as S*≈ 3.6, the low-frequency bubbles gradually moved away from the vertical plane wall in a straight trajectory and the high-frequency bubbles gradually moved close to the vertical wall in a similar straight trajectory after an unstable camber motion. Under the circumstances, high-speed fluid was mainly distributed in the region between the wall and the bubbles, while the relative large Reynolds shear stress mainly existed in the region far away from the wall. 展开更多

This study examines oblique wave motion over multiple submerged porous bars in front of a vertical wall. Based on linear potential theory, an analytical solution for the present problem is developed using matched eigenfunction expansions. A complex dispersion relation is adopted to describe the wave elevation and energy dissipation over submerged porous bars. In the analytical solution, no limitations on the bar number, bar size, and spacing between adjacent bars are set. The convergence of the analytical solution is satisfactory, and the correctness of the analytical solution is confirmed by an independently developed multi-domain BEM (boundary element method) solution. Numerical examples are presented to examine the reflection and transmission coefficients of porous bars, CR and Cv, respectively, for engineering applications. The calculation results show that when the sum of widths for all the porous bars is fixed, increasing the bar number can significantly improve the sheltering function of the bars. Increasing the bar height can cause more wave energy dissipation and lower CR and Cr. The spacing between adjacent bars and the spacing between the last bar and the vertical wall are the key parameters affecting CR and Ct. The proposed analytical method may be used to analyze the hydrodynamic performance of submerged porous bars in preliminary engineering designs. 展开更多

With the method of separation of variables and the eigenfunction expansion employed, an analytical solution is presented for the radiation and diffraction of a rectangular structure with an opening near a vertical wall in oblique seas, in which the unknown coefficients are determined by the boundary conditions and matching requirement on the interface. The effects of the width of the opening and the angle of incidence on the hydrodynamic characteristics of a rectangular structure with an opening near a vertical wall are mainly studied. The comparisons of the calculation results with wall-present and with wall-absent are also made. The results indicate that the variation trends of the heave added mass and excitation force with wall-present are almost the same as those with wall-absent, and that the peak values in the former case are obviously larger than those in the latter due to the reflection of the vertical wall. 展开更多

An empirical formula to predict overtopping discharge of vertical wall is presented,in which an expression similar to the solitary wave function is proposed to describe the rule of the influence of relative water depth. The formula is derived from performing an investigation to the well-known overtopping graphs of Goda, and for the sake of interest, the process of the derivation is detailed. To make clear the formula’s performance, relevant test datasets in the CLASH database are extracted to examine the error levels of the formula. As a result,an overall good agreement has been found between the predictions of the formula and the extracted datasets in a wide range outside the extreme shallow region,i.e.,the range of relative water depth smaller than 0.6,in which the water depth near the wall is so shallow that nearly all the incoming waves have been broken before reaching the wall. 展开更多

To study the seismic performance and load-transferring mechanism of an innovative precast shear wall(IPSW) involving vertical joints, an experimental investigation and theoretical analysis were successively conducted on two test walls. The test results confirm the feasibility of the novel joints as well as the favorable seismic performance of the walls, even though certain optimization measures should be taken to improve the ductility. The load-transferring mechanism subsequently is theoretically investigated based on the experimental study. The theoretical results show the load-transferring route of the novel joints is concise and definite. During the elastic stage, the vertical shear stress in the connecting steel frame(CSF) distributes uniformly; and each high-strength bolt(HSB)primarily delivers vertical shear force. However, the stress in the CSF redistributes when the walls develop into the elastic-plastic stage. At the ultimate state, the vertical shear stress and horizontal normal stress in the CSF distribute linearly; and the HSBs at both ends of the CSF transfer the maximum shear forces. 展开更多

When a 2-D progressive wave train normally or obliquely approaches a vertical wall and then is normally or obliquely reflected from it, the combination of the approaching and reflected waves may result in a standing wave or a short-crested wave in front of the wall. This paper presents the experimental observations of sand bed configurations under the action of these water waves in front of the wall. The geometry of sand ripples under these water waves in front of the vertical wall is presented as a function of flow parameters, such as the water particle semi-excursion and the mobility number. 展开更多

The study of forced convection in a porous medium has aroused and still arouses today the interest of many scientists and industrialists. A considerable amount of work has been undertaken following the discovery of the phenomenon. Solving a standard problem of forced convection in porous media comes down to predicting the temperature and velocity fields as well as the intensity of the flow as a function of the various parameters of the problem. A numerical study of the condensation in forced convection of a pure and saturated vapor on a vertical wall covered with a porous material is presented. The transfers in the porous medium and the liquid film are described respectively by the Darcy-Brinkman model and the classical boundary layer equations. The dimensionless equations are solved by an implicit finite difference method and the iterative Gauss-Seidel method. Our study makes it possible to examine and highlight the role of parameters such as: the Froude number and the thickness of the porous layer on the speed and the temperature in the porous medium. Given the objective of our study, the presentation of velocity and temperature profiles is limited in the porous medium. The results show that the Froude number does not influence the thermal field. The temperature increases with an increase in the thickness of the dimensionless porous layer. The decrease in the Froude number leads to an increase in the hydrodynamic field. 展开更多

When irregular waves attack a vertical wall, standing waves and breaking (or broken) waves will occur in front of the wall. The statistic characteristics of standing wave forces on vertical wall are the same as that of incident waves. But for breaking or broken waves, only large waves break, so the statistic characteristics of breaking wave forces are different to that of standing waves or incident waves. Following a series model test of irregular breaking waves on vertical wall the statistic characterisitics of breaking wave fo.rces were analyzed in this paper. It is found by authors that Weibul distribution may be used to express the statistic distribution of breaking wave forces acting on vertical wall. msed on the analysis of model test data, it is indicated in this paper that the shape parameter m in Weibul distribution is a function of and , in which H is the wave height, d1 is the water depth at the toe of vertical wall and d is the water depth in front of the whole structure; and the theoretical value of scale parameter a can be determined from shape parameter m. 展开更多
