The results show that the seasonal transition of precipitation exhibits multi-modes. One of these modes is characterized by an abrupt transition from drought to flood (ATDF) over the middle and lower reaches of the YRV in the seasonal transition of precipitation. It is shown that the ATDF event from May to June 2011 is simply one prominent case of the ATDF mode. The ATDF mode exhibits an obvious decadal variability. The mode has occurred more frequently since 1979, and its amplitude has apparently strengthened since 1994. From the climatic view, the ATDF mode configures a typical seasonal circulation transition from winter to summer, for which the winter circulations are prolonged, and the summer circulations with the rainy season are built up early over the YRV.展开更多

To return the solids to the bed, these cyclones are fitted with diplegs. By pass of gas from the bed through the dipleg is partially overcome by the back pressure build-up in the dipleg and by adding a trickle valve at the bottom of the dipleg. Diplegs of primary cyclones, operating at a high solid loading behave differently from diplegs of secondary and tertiary cyclones which operate at low solid loading. Both types have been investigated by pressure drop measurements, visual observation and by measurements of the air flow rate flowing up the riser. The primary dipleg was also studied using electrical capacitance tomography. The results are reported hereafter and will give a first indication towards the right design of the dipleg and the selection of the trickle valve. The influence of gas flow in the dipleg on the conversion in a catalytic fluidized bed reactor is found to be negligible.展开更多

Six main vegetation types that differ in structure and species composition, are dominant along these river banks: Aquatic vegetation, Wetbanks, Palmiet, Scrub, Forest and Shrubland(Fynbos). The study aims to correlate the vegetation patterns to flooding patterns, in particular the inundation frequency and stream power. A problem arises: because these catchments are ungauged, like most mountain catchments, with the only weirs at the downstream end of the catchment. Discharge data at the weirs are extrapolated to the sites upstream by multiplication with a factor based on the size of the subcatchment that drains through a sample site. In this way, recurrence intervals for floods in mountain streams are derived. Discharges at sites are also calculated using bed roughness(Manning's n) and slope in straight sections with uniform flow conditions. Stream power is derived from the discharges calculated in this manner. The combination of stream power and recurrence intervals explains the occurrence of most vegetation types occurring on the banks, except for one type: Afromontane Forest. This type is probably more dependent on other factors, such as protection from fire and the depth of the groundwater table.展开更多

Analytical methods have been widely applied in prediction of groundwa- ter inflow to tunnels due to their simplicity and practical base theory. Investigations show that the real amount of water infiltrating into jointed tunnels is much less than calculated amount using analytical methods and obtained results are very dependent on tunnel's geometry and environmental situations. In this study, using multiple regression analysis, a new empirical model for estimation of groundwater seepage into circular tunnels was introduced. Our data was acquired from field surveys and laboratory analysis of core samples. New regression variables were defined after perusing single and two variables relationship between groundwater seepage and other variables. Finally, an appropriate model for estima- tion of leakage was obtained using the stepwise algorithm. Statistics like R, R2, R2e and the histogram of residual values in the model represent a good reputation and fitness for this model to estimate the groundwater seepage into tunnels. The new experimental model was used for the test data and results were satisfactory. Therefore, multiple regression analysis is an effective and efficient way to estimate the groundwater seeoage into tunnels.展开更多

Numerical modeling is one approach to obtain such a prediction. Predictions of groundwater fluxes can be used to determine fluxes of other materials such as salt and nutrients. In this paper an analytical model is developed to predict the flow of groundwater from mangrove forest to the creek. The model uses the geometry and hydraulic conductivity of the mangrove forest sediment, which is inundated by tidal water from day zero to day five, with the flux ranged from 0.026 to 0.007 m^3/(m^2.day) with the average error is about 10%. The solution for the groundwater flow is written in terms of an analytic series solution, based on two dimensional potential flow. The approach is basically to solve the hydraulic potential flow for steady state conditions using the Laplace equation. The advantages of this method are that it is simple but accurate, and the error in the computation can be readily calculated. The result of this model is then compared to the result of the field measurement from also day zero to day five after inundation, which ranged from 0.030 to 0.013 m3/(m2.day) with the average error is about 40%. From the above results, it is concluded that the series solution model can be used to calculate the flux of the groundwater, especially in the mangrove forest area.展开更多

This paper analyzes the problem on two aspects: model experiment and numerical calculation. The model experiment is carried out including three cases firstly, in which the structural vibration response and radiating acoustic field are measured respectively, and the results gained in these three cases are analyzed to discuss the effect of reducing structural vibration and radiating noise of the deadening and decoupling materials. The comparison of the two experiments indicates that the de- cline of the Arctic sea ice leads to a dramatic wanning over the high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, char- acterized by a maximum warming of more than 26~C over the Arctic region. The significant warming is closely re- lated to the enhanced atmospheric heat source. A 40-60 W m-2 increase in the apparent heat source was simulated in winter due to the decline of Arctic sea ice. In contrast, no significant change was found in the atmospheric ap- parent heat source in summer. As a result, the summer temperature change induced by the decline of Arctic sea ice appears to be weak. This study suggests that accurate sea ice cover data is crucial for future climate projection of air temperature in high latitudes.展开更多

Results demonstrate that the cruise ship capsized when it encountered strong winds at speeds of at least 31 m s ^-1 near the apex of a bow echo embedded in a squall line. As suggested by the fallen trees within a 2-kin radius around the wreck location, such strong winds were likely caused by microburst straight-line wind and/or embedded small vortices, rather than tomadoes.展开更多

This numericai model directly simulates Wave-Structure-Seabed/Sandy (WASS) beach interaction by consid- ering flow through a porous medium with inertia, laminar and turbulent resistances, and determines the eddy viscosity with the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulent model in a 3-D wave field (LES-WASS-3D).
