To evaluate the effect of treating long cracks with the impact crack-closure retrofit(ICR)technique,three rib-to-deck welded specimens with a crack length of about 100 mm were tested.The metallographic structure,crack section,crack propagation life,and stress variation were analyzed.Finite-element models were also developed,and some optimal values of certain parameters are suggested according to the simulated results.The results show that new crack sources are generated on both sides of the ICR-treated region because of the stress distribution.The fatigue lives of cracked specimens with long cracks are significantly improved by the technique.Considerable residual compressive stress is also induced,and so it is suggested that the optimal impact angle to be applied to real bridges should be 70°.The stress at the weld root is distributed uniformly with the crack closed,and the optimal crack-closure depth is 4 mm.To evaluate the effect of different crack-closure depths in tests,it is recommended that a hot-spot stress method which is extrapolated by three reference points should be adopted. 展开更多

The heat generation behaviors of fatigue crack are deeply investigated under different preload forces combing numerical simulation and experiment.Firstly,a multi-contact simulation model is applied to stimulate the crack surfaces contact and the horn-sample contact under ultrasonic excitation for calculating the temperature fields.Then,the ultrasonic infrared thermography testing and the microscope testing are carried out for the heat generation and the plastic deformation behaviors of crack region under different preload forces.On this basis,an indirect observation method based on dots distribution is proposed to estimate the plastic deformation on crack contact surfaces.The obtained results show that the temperature rise of crack region increases with the increase of preload force when the preload force is less than 250 N,while the temperature rise rapidly declines due to the plastic deformation on crack contact surfaces and the inhibition effect when the preload force is 280 N.Moreover,the plastic deformation does not lead to the crack propagation,but reduces the detection repeatability of fatigue crack.This work provides an effective method for optimizing testing conditions in practical testing processes,which will be helpful to the establishment of testing standards for batches of test objects in ultrasonic infrared thermography testing. 展开更多

The advantage of built-up sleeved backup roll was described. Based on the stress distribution analysis and simulation for the built-up sleeved backup roll by using finite element method, the effects of roll sleeve thickness and shrink range on the stress-strain field were studied. Finally, based on the methodology and strategy of the fatigue analysis, fatigue life of backup roll was estimated by using the stress-strain data obtained through finite element simulation. The results show that roll sleeve thickness and shrink range have a great influence on sleeve stress distribution of built-up sleeved roll. Under the circumstance of ensuring transferring enough torque, the shrink range should be kept small. However, thicker roll sleeve has longer roll service life when the shrink range is constant. 展开更多

The distribution and magnitude of surface substrates were investigated by finite element method and subsurface stresses of the (FEM). The models of coating single-layer sprayed-coatings on monolithic configurations with different thicknesses and elastic modulus ratios of coating to substrate were introduced, and the effects of thickness and elastic modulus ratio on the stresses were addressed. The calculation results show that the coating/substrate interface shear stress obviously decreases with increasing coating thickness, due to the location of the maximum shear stress moving away from the coating/substrate interface. At the same time, the magnitude of von Mises stress also declines in the case of thicker coatings. However, the high elastic modulus ratio results in extremely high maximum shear stress and the severe discontinuity of the von Mises stress curves, which leads to the intensive stress concentration on the coating/substrate interface. So the coating configurations with the larger coating thickness and lower difference of elastic modulus between coating and substrate exhibit excellent resistant performance of rolling contact fatigue (RCF). 展开更多

This paper analyzes the influence of fatigue loading on the residual stress profile in high strength steel wires. To this end, different sinusoidal loads with diverse values of maximum loading level and number of cycles were simulated on wires in which several residual stress profiles had been previously introduced, some of them with a tensile state and others with a compressive state. An analysis was made of the evolution with time of such residual stress laws by comparing them at key instants of loading, that is, at initial instant, at maximum load, at minimum load and at final instant. Numerical results show only a minor influence of fatigue loading on the residual stress profile. 展开更多
