According to geological conditions of No. 3 and No. 4 coal seams (namely A3 and B4) of the Pan'er coal mine and the parameters of panels 11223, 11224, and 11124 with fully-mechanical coal mining, we built 2D similar material simulation and FLAC3D numerical simulation models to investigate the development of mining-induced stress and the extraction effect of pressure-relief gas with large height and upward mining. Based on a comprehensive analysis of experimental data and observations, we obtained the deformation and breakage characteristics of strata overlying the coal seam, the development patterns of the mining-induced stress and fracture, and the size of the stress-relief area. The stress-relief effect was investigated and analyzed in consideration with mining height and three thick hard strata. Because of the group of three hard thick strata located in the main roof and the residual stress of mined panel 11124, the deformation, breakage, mining-induced stress and fracture development, and the stress-relief coefficient were discontinuous and asymmetrical. The breakage angle of the overlying strata, and the compressive and expansive zones of coal deformation were mainly controlled by the number, thickness, and strength of the hard stratum. Compared with the value of breakage angle derived by the traditional empirical method, the experimental value was lower than the traditional results by 3°-4°below the hard thick strata group, and by 13°-19° above the hard thick strata group. The amount of gas extracted from floor drainage roadway of B4 over 17 months was variable and the amount of gas per month differed considerably, being much smaller when panel 11223 influenced the area of the three hard thick strata. Generally, the stress-relief zone of No. 4 coal seam was small under the influence of the hard thick strata located in the main roof, which played an important role in delaying the breakage time and increasing the breakage space. In this study we gained understanding of the stress-relief mechanism influenced by the hard thick roof. The research results and engineering practice show that the main roof of the multiple hard thick strata is a critical factor in the design of panel layout and roadways for integrated coal exploitation and gas extraction, provides a theoretical basis for safe and high-efficient mining of coal resources. 展开更多

Aiming to get the strata behavior and stability rules of surrounding rock of the main return airway of Yushujing Coal Mine, convergence deformation of two sides and force of U-shaped steel yieldable support and bolt were monitored, and deformation of surrounding rock and mechanical characteristics of support structure were timely obtained to guide the informa- tion construction and optimize supporting parameters in water-rich soft rock roadway. The field monitoring results indicate the following. (1) Convergence displacement of rock surface increases with time continuity and shows surrounding rock's intense theological behavior. The original support scheme cannot control the large deformation and strongly theological behavior; (2) Without backfilling, the U-shaped steel support begins to bear load after erecting for 4-7 days and increases rapidly in the first 30 days. The U-shaped steel support at the right shoulder and top of roadway bears a larger force and the left side and shoulder bears a smaller force; (3) The stress of bolt increasing over time and at the right shoulder of roadway has larger growth and value. The mechanism of rock deformation and the failure and strata behavior in water-rich soft rock roadway are revealed based on the results of the measured relaxation zone of surrounding rock, measured stresses, and the rock mechanics tests. 展开更多

In actual production, deep coal mine roadways are often under typical static-dynamic coupling stress(SDCS)conditions with high ground stress and strong dynamic disturbances. With the increasing number of disasters and accidents induced by SDCS conditions, the safe and efficient production of coal mines is seriously threatened. Therefore,it is of great practical significance to study the deformation and failure characteristics of the roadway surrounding rock under SDCS.In this paper, the effects of different in-situ stress fields and dynamic load conditions on the surrounding rock are studied by numerical simulations, and the deformation and failure characteristics are obtained.According to the simulation results, the horizontal stress, vertical stress and dynamic disturbance have a positive correlation with the plastic failure of the surrounding rock.Among these factors, the influence of the dynamic disturbance is the most substantial.Under the same stress conditions, the extents of deformation and plastic failure of the roof and ribs are always greater than those of the floor. The effect of horizontal stresses on the roadway deformation is more notable than that of vertical stresses. The results indicate that for the roadway under high-stress conditions, the in-situ stress test must be strengthened first. After determining the magnitude of the in-situ stress, the location of the roadway should be reasonably arranged in the design to optimize the mining sequence. For roadways that are strongly disturbed by dynamic loads, rock supports(rebar/cable bolts, steel set etc.)that are capable of maintaining their effectiveness without failure after certain dynamic loads are required. The results of this study contribute to understanding the characteristics of the roadway deformation and failure under SDCS,and can be used to provide a basis for the support design and optimization under similar geological and geotechnical circumstances. 展开更多

Deep-seated large-scale toppling failure presents unique challenges in the study of natural slope deformation process in mountainous regions. An active deep-seated toppling process was identified in the Erguxi slope located in southwest China, which affected a large area and damaged critical transportation infrastructure with the volume of the deforming rock mass exceeding 24×10~6 m^3.It poses significant risks to the downstream Shiziping Hydropower Station by damming the Zagunao River.Field investigation and monitoring results indicate that the deformation of the Erguxi slope is in the advanced stage of deep-seated toppling process, with the formation of a disturbed belt but no identifiable master failure surface. It was postulated that the alternating tensile and shear strength associated with the hard/soft laminated rock strata of metasandstone and phyllite layers preclude the development of either a tensile or shear failure surface, which resulted in the continuous deformation and displacement without a catastrophic mass movement. The slope movement is in close association with the unfavorable geological conditions of the study area in addition to the construction of transportation infrastructure and the increase of the reservoir level. On the basis of the mechanism and intensity of the ongoing toppling deformation,a qualitative grading system was proposed to describe the toppling process and toevaluate the slope stability. This paper summarized the field observation and monitoring data on the toppling deformation for better characterizing its effect on the stability of the Erguxi slope. The qualitative grading system intends to provide a basis for quantitative study of large-scale deep-seated toppling process in metamorphic rocks. 展开更多

Current practice in analysis and design of blast doors subjected to blast loading considers only simple boundary conditions and material properties. The boundary conditions and material properties, in fact, have considerable influence on the response of blast doors subjected to blast loading. In this paper, the dynamic responses of a reinforced concrete arched blast door under blast loading were analyzed by the finite element program ABAQUS, combined with a previously developed elasto-viscoplastic rate-sensitive material model. And the effect of the surrounding rock mass and contact effect of the doorframe were also taken into account in the simulation. It is demonstrated that the strain-rate effect has considerable influence on the response of reinforced concrete blast door subjected to blast loading and must be taken into account in the analysis. 展开更多

The effects of induction unloading such as drilling, blasting, lancing and water-infusion softening on weakening of rock mechanics properties were investigated. Three stress paths were chosen as test schemes corresponding to the triaxial compressive test, pre-peak and post-peak unloading the confining pressure tests. The results show that compression deformation is the main cause of rock failure under loading condition. However, the strong dilatation leads to the rock failure along unloading direction. Rock failure happens even under little axial stress with confining pressure unloading. Poisson ratio increases with the decrease of confining pressure during the process of unloading. Elastic modulus increases slowly along with the decline of confining pressure, but decreases rapidly when unloaded to yielding strength. It shows that the weakening rate of rock intensity tends to be faster with easily failure under the unloading condition. 展开更多

Methods The deformation mode of spherical shells was given by introducing isometric transformation. The governing equation of motion of the rigid plastic spherical shell was given by energy balance. This equation was solved by using Runge Kutta method. Results The relationships between the impact force, dimple radius, central point deflection and time were obtained. The response time initial velocity, the maximal impact force permanent initial velocity, the central point deflection initial velocity and the dimple radius initial velocity characteristics were respectively plotted. Conclusion A comparison made between the theoretical results and the experimental ones indicates that the two groups of results are in conformity with each other. 展开更多

Health state of shield tunnels is one of the most important parameters for structure maintenance.Usually, the shield tunnel is extremely long in longitude direction and composed by many segments. It is difficult to quantify the relationship between the structure damage state and shield tunnel structure deformation by the model test because of unpredictable effects of different scales between model test and prototype tunnel structure. Here,an in-situ monitoring project was conducted to study the excavation induced shield tunnel structure damage, which could be considered a prototype test on the tunnel deformation. The disaster performance of tunnel leakage, segment crack, segment dislocation and segment block drop-off during longitude deformation and cross-section ovality developments was analyzed. The results indicate that instead of the longitude deformation, the ovality value has the strongest correlation to the rest disease performance, which could be used as the assessment index of the tunnel health. For this tunnel,it is in health state when the ovality is less than 0.5%,and the serious damage could be found when the ovality value is higher than 0.77%.The research results provide valuable reference to shield tunnel health assessment and help complete the standard of shield tunnel construction. 展开更多

In order to effectively control the deformation and failure of surrounding rocks in a coal roadway in a deep tectonic region, the deformation and failure mechanism and stability control mechanism were studied. With such methods as numerical simulation and field testing, the distribution law of the displacement, stress and plastic zone in the surrounding rocks was analyzed. The deformation and failure mechanisms of coal roadways in deep tectonic areas were revealed: under high tectonic stress, two sides will slide along the roof or floor; while the plastic zone of the two sides will extend along the roof or floor, leading to more serious deformation and failure in the corner of two sides and the bolt supporting the corners is readily cut off by the shear force or tension force. Aimed at controlling the large slippage deformation of the two sides, serious deformation and failure in the corners of the two sides and massive bolt breakage, a ‘‘controlling and yielding coupling support'' control technology is proposed. Firstly, bolts which do not pass through the bedding plane should be used in the corners of the roadway, allowing the two sides to have some degree of sliding to achieve the purpose of ‘‘yielding'' support, and which avoid breakage of the bolts in the corner. After yielding support, bolts in the corner of the roadway and which pass through the bedding plane should be used to control the deformation and failure of the coal in the corner. ‘‘Controlling and yielding coupling support'' technology has been successfully applied in engineering practice, and the stability of deep coal roadway has been greatly improved. 展开更多

This study investigated the effect of repeated blasting on the stability of surrounding rock during the construction of a tunnel or city underground engineering. The split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB)was used to carry out cyclic impact tests on granite samples, each having a circular hole, under different axial pressures, and the cumulative specific energy was proposed to characterize the damage characteristics of the rock during the cyclic impact. The mechanical properties and the energy absorbed by the granite samples under cyclic impact loads were analyzed. The results showed that under different axial pressures, the reflected waveform from the samples was characterized by“double-peak”phenomenon,which gradually changed to“single-peak”wi th the increase in damage value. The dynamic peak stress of the sample first increased and then decreased with an increase in impact times. The damage value criterion established based on the energy dissipation could well characterize the relationship between the damage and the number of impacts, which showed a slow increase, steady increase, and high-speed increase, and the damage value depended mainly on the last impact.Under the action of different axial pressures, all the failure modes of the samples were axial splitting failures. As the strain rate increased, with an increase in the dimension of the block, the sizes of the rock fragments decreased, and the fragmentation became more severe. 展开更多

Although the study of TM(Thermo Mechanics),HM(Hydraulic-Mechanics) and THM(Thermo-Hydraulic-Mechanics) coupling under a loading test have been under development, rock failure analysis under THM coupling and unloading is an emerging topic.Based on a high temperature triaxial unloading seep test for phyllite, this paper discusses the deformation and failure mechanism of phyllites under the "H M,T→H,T→M" incomplete coupling model with unloading conditions. The results indicate that the elastic modulus and initial permeability decrease and the Poisson's ratio increases with increasing temperature;the elastic modulus decreases and the Poisson's ratio and initial permeability increase with increasing water pressure.During the unloading process, rock penetrability is small at the initial elastic deformation phase, but the penetrability increases near the end of the elastic deformation phase;mechanisms involving temperature and water pressure affect penetrability differently.Phyllite failure occurs from the initial thermal damage of the rock materials, splitting and softening(which is caused by pore water pressure),and the pressure difference which is formed from the loading axial pressure and unloading confining pressure. The phyllite failure mechanism is a transtensional(tension-shearing) failure. 展开更多

Following exploitation of a coal seam, the final stress field is the sum of in situ stress field and an excavation stress field. Based on this feature, we firstly established a mechanics analytical model of the mining floor strata. Then the study applied Fourier integral transform to solve a biharmonic equation, obtaining the analytical solution of the stress and displacement of the mining floor. Additionally, this investigation used the Mohr–Coulomb yield criterion to determine the plastic failure depth of the floor strata. The calculation process showed that the plastic failure depth of the floor and floor heave are related to the mining width, burial depth and physical–mechanical properties. The results from an example show that the curve of the plastic failure depth of the mining floor is characterized by a funnel shape and the maximum failure depth generates in the middle of mining floor; and that the maximum and minimum principal stresses change distinctly in the shallow layer and tend to a fixed value with an increase in depth. Based on the displacement results, the maximum floor heave appears in the middle of the stope and its value is 0.107 m. This will provide a basis for floor control. Lastly, we have verified the analytical results using FLAC3 Dto simulate floor excavation and find that there is some deviation between the two results, but their overall tendency is consistent which illustrates that the analysis method can well solve the stress and displacement of the floor. 展开更多

In view of failure phenomena with nonlinear large deformation including extensive damage, whole section destruction in short time, high rate of repair, most destruction forms occurred in the tertiary roadway of soft rocks engineering in Liuhai mine, according to the methods of geological survey, theoretical analysis, numerical calculation and in-situ test, the composite failure mechanism of molecular expansion, tectonic stress, gravity stress and engineering deviatoric stress, faults and random joint in this area is analyzed deeply, then an coupling support of double-layer-truss is proposed. The research results show that the first wave of deformation energy was released by bolt-mesh-cable fixed into the roof, floor and two sides of the roadway. While the second wave of deformation energy was released through the interface function between double-layer-truss and the surrounding rock. The double-layer-truss that characterized by high strength, good integrity can absorb high deformation energy of surrounding rocks, which led to the uniform distribution of the stress.Engineering practice shows this technology has been successfully applied to control the deformation failure of the tertiary extremely soft rock roadway. 展开更多

This paper mainly investigates the effects of initial static shear stress and grain shape on the liquefaction induced large deformation of saturated sand under torsional shear.Nanjing sand, mainly composed of platy grains,is tested with different initial static shear stress ratio(SSR)using a hollow column torsional shear apparatus. The tests find that the saturated Nanjing sand reaches full liquefaction under the superposition of initial static shear stress and cyclic stress for both stress reversal and non-reversal cases. However,it requires a large number of loading cycles to reach full liquefaction if stress reversal does not occur. With increasing the initial static stress, the large deformation of the Nanjing sand should mainly induced by the cyclic liquefaction firstly under a smaller initial shear stress, and then it should be induced by the residual deformation failure. The critical point occurs approximately when the initial shear stress is close to the amplitude of the cyclic shear stress.Meanwhile,it shows that grain angularity increases the liquefaction resistance when the initial static shear stress is zero.A small initial static shear stress causes the larger loss of liquefaction resistance for angular sand than rounded sand.At a high initial SSR,the angular sand is more resistant to the large residual deformation failure than the rounded sand. 展开更多

A series of true-triaxial compression tests were performed on red sandstone cubic specimens with a circular hole to investigate the influence of depth on induced spalling in tunnels. The failure process of the hole sidewalls was monitored and recorded in real-time by a micro-video monitoring equipment. The general failure evolution processes of the hole sidewall at different initial depths(500 m,1000 m and 1500 m)during the adjustment of vertical stress were obtained. The results show that the hole sidewall all formed spalling before resulting in strain rockburst, and ultimately forming a V-shaped notch. The far-field principal stress for the initial failure of the tunnel shows a good positive linear correlation with the depth. As the depth increases, the stress required for the initial failure of the tunnels clearly increased, the spalling became more intense;the size and mass of the rock fragments and depth and width of the V-shaped notches increased, and the range of the failure zone extends along the hole sidewall from the local area to the entire area. Therefore,as the depth increases, the support area around the tunnel should be increased accordingly to prevent spalling. 展开更多

The overbroken rock mass of gob areas is made up of broken and accumulated rock blocks compressed to some extent by the overlying strata. The beating pressure of the gob can directly affect the safety of mining fields, formarion of road retained along the next goaf and seepage of water and methane through the gob. In this paper, the software RFPA'2000 is used to construct numerical models. Especially the Euler method of control volume is proposed to solve the simulation difficulty arising from plastically finite deformations. The results show that three characteristic regions occurred in the gob area: (1) a naturally accumulated region, 0-10 m away from unbroken surrounding rock walls, where the beating pressure is nearly zero; (2) an overcompacted region, 10-20 m away from unbroken walls, where the beating pressure results in the maximum value of the gob area; (3) a stable compaction region, more than 20 m away from unbroken walls and occupying absolutely most of the gob area, where the beating pressures show basically no differences. Such a characteristic can exolain the easy-seeoaged “O”-ring phenomena around mining fields very well. 展开更多

Underground mining activities and rainfall have potential important influence on the initiation and reactivation of the slope deformations, especially on the steep rock slope. In this paper, using the discrete element method(UDEC),numerical simulation was carried out to investigate deformation features and the failure mechanism of the steep rock slope under mining activities and rainfall. A steep rock slope numerical model was created based on a case study at the Wulong area in Chongqing city,China. Mechanical parameters of the rock mass have been determined by situ measurements and laboratory measurements. A preliminary site monitoring system has been realized, aiming at getting structure movements and stresses of unstablerock masses at the most significant discontinuities. According to the numerical model calibrated based on the monitoring data, four types of operation conditions are designed to reveal the effect of mining excavation and extreme rainfall on the deformation of the steep rock slope. 展开更多
