The IMC-layers are joint weaknesses at the Cu fusion line in centered welding and at the Ti fusion line when the beam is deviated towards Cu. A new method referred to as electron-beam superposition welding was presented, and the optimal welding sequence was considered. The IMC-layer produced by centered welding was fragmented and remelted during Cu-side non-centered welding, giving a finely structured compound layer and improved mechanical properties of the joint. The tensile strength of joint is 276.0 MPa, 76.7% that of the base metal.展开更多

The effect of Ti-Al content on interfacial microstructure and mechanical properties of the joints was investigated. Localized melt of the substrates occurred in the joints. γ-Ni0.35Al0.30Ti0.35, NiA l3 and Ni2Al3 reaction layers formed adjacent to the substrates. Joint flaws, such as pores and cracks, made the joint density decrease and worked as the fracture source, which led to the sharp decline of joint strength. Additive Ti-Al increased joint density and strengthened the interlayer adhesion to Cf/Al. The joint flaws could be controlled by changing the Ti-Al content. When the Ti-Al content was 0.1, the joint was free of cracks with high density and reached the maximum shear strength of 24.12 MPa.展开更多

The composite specimens were continuously annealed in an electrical furnace under the protection of argon gas. The microstructures were then observed using scanning electron microscopy. X-ray diffractometry was used to investigate the residual stresses in the specimens. The elemental distribution was analyzed with an electron probe micro analyzer. The tensile strength and hardness were also measured. Results show that the diffusion layers become wide as the heat treatment temperature increases, and the residual stress of the specimen is at a minimum and tensile strength is the largest when being annealed at 250 ℃. Therefore, 250 ℃ is the most appropriate annealing temperature.展开更多

Homogenizing annealing, hot rolling and T6 treatment were successively performed and their effects on microstructure and properties of the slab were studied. The results reveal that the average diffusion layer thickness of as-cast slab, determined by interdiffusion of elements Zn, Cu, Mg and Si, was about 400 μm. Excellent metallurgical bonding was achieved because all tensile samples fractured on the softer 6009 alloy side after homogenizing annealing. After homogenizing annealing plus rolling, the average diffusion layer thickness decreased to 100 μm, while the network structure of 7050 alloy side transformed to dispersive nubby structure. Furthermore, subsequent T6 treatment resulted in diffusion layer thickness up to 200 μm and an obvious increase of the Vickers hardness for both 7050 and 6009 sides. The layered structure of the as-cast 6009/7050 bimetal is retained after hot rolling and T6 treatment.展开更多

The mechanisms taking part in semisolid stir welding of AZ91 alloys were investigated. Two 7.5 mm-thick AZ91 pieces and a 2 ram-thick Mg-25%Zn interlayer piece were placed in a heating plate. After holding for 3 min at a desired temperature, the weld seam was stirred by a rotational tool. The heating plate was travelled on a trolley at a constant speed of 4.6 cm/min. In addition, one sample was welded without interlayer. Evolution of welding as a function of stirring rate, tool shape and temperature was studied throughout this welding process with scanning electron and optical microscopes. Interlayer decreases the joining temperature and assists to investigate the possible semisolid stir welding mechanisms. Increasing temperature and stirring rate, and using round stirrer instead of grooved stirrer increase the stir zone width. The results show that some possible mechanisms are helpful to achieve a proper metallurgical bonding in the welding process, such as oxide layer disruption, liquid phase blending, globule joining, and liquid penetration to the base metal, merging a group of globule into stir zone from the base metal.展开更多

For this purpose, both three different plastic interlayers (i.e., three types of polyvinyl butyral--PVB) and three different glass-lamina thicknesses are taken into account. Effects of the plastic interlayer, thickness of the glass-lamina, number of surface cracks and their locations on the vibration characteristics/structural performances are examined experimentally. Vibration tests are performed to present free vibration characteristics of the laminated glass beams under clamped-free boundary conditions. Experimental dynamic analysis consists of six parts: (I) vibration analysis with no-crack and no-hole with a bolted joint; (I1) vibration analysis with a surface crack and no-hole with a bolted joint; (III) vibration analysis with two surface cracks and no-hole with a bolted joint; (IV) vibration analysis with no-crack and a hole with a bolted joint; (V) vibration analysis with a surface crack and a hole with a bolted joint; (VI) vibration analysis with two surface cracks and a hole with a bolted joint. For these experimental steps, an impact hammer with a force transducer is used to excite the uncracked or cracked composite beams through the selected points. After the excitation, the responses are obtained by an accelerometer. The vibration measurements are completed using a microprocessor-based data acquisition system and nCode GlyphWorks software. Results are given in tabular and graphical forms.展开更多
