Genes encoding reporter proteins are used as visual marker-assisted tools in genetic transformation as well as plant breeding. In this study, the red fluorescent protein identified in Discosoma sp. coral(DsRed2) was successfully used as a visual marker for cotton genetic engineering. DsRed2 was successfully expressed in two cotton cultivars,JIN668 and YZ1, driven by the Ca MV-35 S promoter via the Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. Our results suggest that DsRed2 expression provides an early-stage selection tool for the transgenic calli via visual observation. Red fluorescence can be detected not only in callus and somatic embryos but also in most tissues and organs of mature plants. The transgenic line Yz-2-DsRed2 was crossed with four different cotton cultivars to assess the transgene heritability and stability in different genetic backgrounds. The heritability of the red color was highly stable when Yz-2-DsRed2 was used as a male parent. The DsRed2 gene expressed 100% in the F_1 hybrids. To investigate the relationship between DsRed2 transcription and DNA methylation, a methylation-specific PCR approach was applied to the Ca MV-35 S promoter region. The results showed a negative association between DNA methylation level in the promoter region and the transgene transcription.Taken together, these findings suggest DsRed2 a visual reporter gene for cotton genetic transformation and molecular breeding programs. 展开更多

Ammoides verticillata (Desf.) Briq. is an Algerian endemic species; the phytochemical screening (methods of Harborne, 1973) of the aerials parts wealth in polyphenol compounds: flavonoids, saponins, leucoanthocyanes, terpens and steroids and tannins; there is no alkaloids. There is an important quantity of essential oils in the flowers; the interest of this study is that this species remains until then it is not very known. The results of Aromatogram method by incorporation of Mtiller-Hinton on solid medium, showed a significant antimicrobial activity (method of Duraffourd, 1987) of the infusion and the ethanolic extract; the infusion of stems and flowers is indeed much more active on Echerichia coli, Citrobacter, Enterobacter, Staph aureus and Staph epidermidis, such as flowers extracts demonstrate an important antimicrobial activity on Staph aureus, Staph epidermidis, Streptococcus, Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter recognized as antibiotic resistant. This could give opportunities for using this species in the treatment of diverse infections and as a disinfecting additive on nosocomial area. The valorization, preservation and sustainable use ofAmmoides verticillata require the protection of its habitats. 展开更多

Ten cold-pressed oil from 6 herb plant seeds (sesame, fax, saffower, pumpkin, tomato and hemp) and 4 woody plant seeds (camellia, almond, walnut and peony) were analyzed to determine bioactive compounds content, including tocopherols, phytosterols and phenolics, as well as their antioxidant activities. Total tocopherols content ranged from 161.11 mg/kg in camellia seed oil to 1,072.51 mg/kg in tomato seed oil. Tomato seed oil had the highest total phytosterols (708.89 mg/100 g) and phenolics content (20.27 mg SAE/100 g),whereas, saffower seed oil has the lowest total phytosterols (173.75 mg/100g) and walnut kernel oil contained the lowest phenolics (2.32 mg SAE/100 g), respectively. Tomato seed oil exhibited the strongest ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FARP, 311.36 μmol/100 g) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity (56.40 μmol/100 g), while camellia seed oil had the lowest FRAP value (34.83 μmol/100 g) and fax seed oil had the lowest DPPH value (2.75 μmol/100 g). Correlation coeffcient was determined as 0.647 and 0.863 between FRAP value and total tocopherols and phenolics, and 0.673 and 0.711 between DPPH value and total tocopherols and phenolics (p 〈 0.05), respectively. This result indicated the antioxidant activities (FRAP and DPPH) were highly correlated with total tocopherols and phenolics content of oil. This study will be very useful for comprehensive utilization of all 10 cold-press oils. 展开更多

The region of Tlemcen is situated in the north-west of Algeria. The aridity of the climate had lead to the development of the matorral, a state of degradation of the Mediterranean, and the composed xerophytes plants such as doum and diss, had been found. Chamaerops humilis, xerophyte plant, with special morphologic and botanic character presents a resistance of these climatic. The authors have proposed study of fauna closly linked to this plant. A faunistic inventory was realized in the Mansourah area (region of Tlemcen). Four stations have been described. Collecting sample was performed during June 2003-Mar. 2004, replying on sixteen (16) prelevements. The number of species were estimated of about 136, in which 111 are Arthropoda, the Entomofauna represented by 97 species and the other inventory are Arachnida by 8 species and Myriapoda by 6 species. 18 species are related to Gastropoda. The vertebrates are few. The importance of different groups' recolted on the Chamaerops humilis in the four stations is done particular to the insects. Analysis factorial correspondence (A.F.C) show different grouping of animal species. 展开更多

The present work dealt with sexual reproduction capacity of three relic species of the genus Sternbergia (family AmaryUidaceae) distributed in the Caucasus, i.e., Sternbergia lutea (L.) Ker Gawl. ex Spreng., Sternbergiafischeriana (Herb.) Roem and Sternbergia colchiciflora Waldst. & Kit.. Under this study, the natural populations of species, which possess valuable medicinal and ornamental properties, have been assessed by experts as vulnerable, and S. colchiciflora is included in the red list of endemic plants of the Caucasus, as having status of the critically endangered species. The situation is aggravated by the poor self-regeneration capacity of these species, which is one of the main factors responsible for the sustainability of the population of this or that species in the wild. Self-regeneration capacity for sexual reproduction was investigated in the listed species of the genus Sternbergia using common methods of embryology and reproduction biology. In conditions of the National Botanical Garden of Georgia (NBGG), the species S. lutea and S. fischeriana prove to be completely infertile and propagate vegetatively by bulblets, while S. colchiciflora revealed the ability for propagation by seed. Long-term conservation of seeds of the studied species S. colchiciflora in the Caucasus Regional Seed Bank (CRSB) and establishing of living collections of this species at the experimental plot were chosen as the method for safeguarding this critically endangered species. 展开更多

Phoenix species, recognized for their profound ecological, economic, and cultural significance, have garnered substantial attention in research across Asia. However, limited studies exist on research trends, status, distribution, ethnobotany, and pharmacological activities of Phoenix species in the region. The objective of this study is to compile pertinent information on these aspects for Phoenix species in Asia.We employed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses(PRISMA)approach to systematically examine the literature pertaining to Phoenix species in the Asian region. This comprehensive review analyzes research trends on Phoenix species in Asia from year 2000 to 2023.A total of 42 studies were identified, showcasing a growing interest, with a notable peak in publications in 2019.The temporal distribution suggests fluctuating attention over the years.Geographically, the concentration of studies is limited to 12 out of 48 Asian countries, emphasizing the need for more extensive exploration given the widespread availability of Phoenix species. The research primarily focuses on pharmacology, followed by ethnobotany, morphology, taxonomy, material science, environmental engineering, and ecology.Notably, studies disproportionately concentrate on Phoenix dactylifera, leaving other species underexplored. The analysis of research focus, species distribution, and geographical representation underscores the importance of diversifying research themes and exploring the ecological, economic, and cultural significance of lesser-studied Phoenix species across Asia. The findings highlight both the growing interest and existing gaps in our knowledge, urging for a more comprehensive exploration of the entire genus to unravel its full potential and significance across Asian landscapes. 展开更多

Aims Unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs),i.e.drones,have recently emerged as cost-effective and flexible tools for acquiring remote sensing data with fine spatial and temporal resolution. It provides a new method and opportunity for plant ecologists to study issues from individual to regional scales. However,as a new method,UAVs remote sensing applications in plant ecology are still challenged. The needs of plant ecology research and the application development of UAVs remote sensing should be better integrated. Methods This report provides a comprehensive review of UAV-based remote sensing applications in plant ecology to synthesize prospects of applying drones to advance plant ecology research.Important Findings Of the 400 references,59%were published in remote sensing journals rather than in plant ecology journals, reflecting a substantial gap between the interests of remote sensing experts and plant ecologists. Most of the studies focused on UAV remote sensing’s technical aspects, such as data processing and remote sensing inversion, with little attention on answering ecological questions. There were 61%of studies involved community-scale research.RGB and multispectral cameras were the most used sensors(75%).More ecologically meaningful parameters can be extracted from UAV data to better understand the canopy surface irregularity and community heterogeneity, identify geometrical characteristics of canopy gaps and construct canopy chemical assemblies from living vegetation volumes.More cooperation between plant ecologists and remote sensing experts is needed to promote UAV remote sensing in advancing plant ecology research. 展开更多
