Barley straw biochar(BSB) was introduced in a Wagner pot(1/5000a) in amounts of 0(BSB0, control), 100(BSB100), 300(BSB300), and 500(BSB500) kg 10a^(-1). After the addition of BSB into the upland soil, carbon dioxide(CO_2) emission increased while methane(CH_4) and nitrous oxide(N_2O) emissions decreased. The highest CO2 flux was measured for the BSB500 sample,(84.6 g m^(-2)) followed by BSB300, BSB100, and BSB0 in decreasing order. Relative to those of control, the total CH_4 flux and N_2O flux for the BSB500 treatment were lower by 31.6% and 26.1%, respectively. The global warming potential(GWP) of the treatment without biochar was 281.4 g CO_2 m-2 and those for treatments with biochar were in the range from 194.1 to 224.9 g CO_2 m^(-2). Therefore, introducing BSB into upland soil to cultivate Chinese cabbages can reduce the global warming potential.展开更多

However, pilot overhead to obtain CSI with enough precision is a significant issue for wireless communication networks with massive antennas and ultra-dense cell. This paper proposes a learning- based channel model, which can estimate, refine, and manage CSI for a synergetic transmission system. It decomposes the channel impulse response into multiple paths, and uses a learning-based algorithm to estimate paths' parameters without notable degradation caused by sparse pilots. Both indoor measurement and outdoor measurement are conducted to verify the feasibility of the proposed channel model preliminarily.展开更多

Different traffic noise spectra were registered and reproduced, simulating the outdoor traffic conditions through different windows. Spectrum adaptation terms for the recorded spectra were different from the ones obtained from the Standards, showing that Normative gives a safe evaluation of the Weighted Sound Insulation Index. In field measurements, the level abatements calculated from the Facade Acoustic Insulation Index corrected with the adaptation terms shows that the ones from the Standard do not give a good approximation, while if the level abatements is calculated using the adaptation terms from the registered spectra, a more reliable approximation is achieved. Furthermore, comparing the level abatements for two windows having both Rw equal to 41 dB, very different values were obtained at different frequencies; therefore to characterize acoustic performances of windows, sound insulation curves are also needed. The correlation between the mean difference between adaptation terms calculated from the standard and the one between abatements obtained with pink noise and the ones obtained with the registered spectra is good, but different for road traffic and trains. In both, the difference diminishes when the difference between the abatements increases.展开更多

According to FDS simulation results, 02, CO and CO2 simulation concentration value correspond with full-scale experimental results. When the indoor O2 concentration was lower than 15%, which causes incomplete combustion, the CO concentration would rise rapidly and even reached above 1,500 ppm, causing death in short time. In addition, when the force ventilation model supplied the water heater with enough air to bum, the indoor CO concentration will keep low and harmless to humans. The study also adopted diverse variables, such as the opening area of window, outdoor wind speed and water heater types, to analyze deeply user's safety regarding gas water heater. In a result, while balcony area is larger than 14 mE, the volume of water heater is below 16 L (33.1 kW), and the indoor window, connecting balcony with room, is closed, if the opening on the outdoor window of the balcony is larger than 0.2 mE, this can ensure the personal security of the indoor space.展开更多

However, with few or noisy data or multi-collinearity, unbiased OLS leads to large variance. Biased estimators, especially ridge estimator, have been introduced to improve OLS by trading bias for variance. Ridge estimator is feasible as an estimator with smaller variance. At the same confidence level, with additive noise as the normal random variable, the less variance one estimator has, the shorter the two-sided symmetric confidence interval is. However, this finding is limited to the unbiased estimator and few studies analyze and compare the confidence levels between ridge estimator and OLS. This paper derives the matrix of ridge parameters under necessary and sufficient conditions based on which ridge estimator is superior to OLS in terms of mean squares error matrix, rather than mean squares error. Then the confidence levels between ridge estimator and OLS are compared under the condition of OLS fixed symmetric confidence interval, rather than the criteria for evaluating the validity of different unbiased estimators. We conclude that the confidence level of ridge estimator can not be directly compared with that of OLS based on the criteria available for unbiased estimators, which is verified by a simulation and a laboratory scale experiment on a single parameter measurement.展开更多

With renewable energy sources, no polluting emissions are released into the atmosphere. Therefore, using these sources on a large-scale is a key to reducing emissions and meeting the commitments established by Kyoto Protocol. Moreover, EU wants that the 20% of energy consumption is renewable in 2020. This study describes economic aspects, such as net present value and internal profitability rate, of the repowering process for the wind farms. Repowering can generate considerably more power with fewer facilities. This process was the result of a growing demand for renewable energies, facilitated by the great potential of wind energy in the north of Spain. The wind farms studied in this work were set up before 1998 and they had obsolete machinery with low power. There are strong indications that repowering is a profitable endeavour.展开更多

Oil palm culture in peatland requires drainage system. Petland drainage is regarded to enhance greenhouse gases release due to faster peat decomposition and reduce peat surface (subsidence) in certain time. To improve peat productivity, the in situ ameliorant materials should be applied such as biochar of oil palm bunches. The experiment was conducted in greenhouse gases laboratory using soil column method to determine effect of biochar of oil palm bunches on greenhouse gases flux in different peat agro-ecology. The peat samples were taken from central Kalimantan. The peat samples were collected using soil column with 20 cm-diameter and 50 cm in height. The 3 ~ 5 experiment was arranged using randomized block design with three replicates. The first factor treatment was peat samples with different agroecologies (below 3 years old of oil palm, above 3 years old of oil palm, and scrubs), and the second factor treatment was rate of oil palm bunches biochar (0, l, 2, 3, 4 t.ha-1). Without applying biochar of oil palm bunches, the CO2 flux from peat with scrub was higher than from peat with oil palm plantation. Application of oil palm bunches biochar in three peat agro-ecologies emitted CO2 lower than application of no biochar. Under peat with scrub ecology, methane flux increased with time period of incubation. Methane flux was generally higher by applying biochar of oil palm bunches in scrubs agroecology, however, application of oil palm biochar reduced methane flux from peat for oil palm plantation. The increase of rate of oil palm bunches biochar decreased significantly more GHGs emission (P 〈 0.01).展开更多

The performance of the drift-flux model for particle transport in different kinds of airflow fields was analyzed. The results show the drift-flux model can predict the transport of indoor fine particles reasonably well. When the air flow field varies slowly, the model can predict both the time-dependent variation ratio of the particle concentration and final stable concentration very well, and the difference for particles with different sizes can be also well predicted. When the air flow varies drastically, the accuracy of the model is decreased due to the neglect of the particles’ independent convective terms in the air flow.展开更多
