AIM:To assess the effect of experimentally induced anisometropia on binocularity in normal adults with glassesfree three-dimensional(3D)technique.METHODS:Totally 54 healthy medical students with normal binocularity in the cross-sectional study were enrolled.Anisometropia was induced by placing trail lenses over the right eye,in 0.5 D steps including lenses of-0.5,-1,-1.5,-2,-2.5 D(hyperopic anisometropia)and lenses of+0.5,+1,+1.5,+2,+2.5 D(myopic anisometropia). The glasses-free 3D technique was used to evaluated not only fine stereopsis, but also coarse stereopsis, dynamic stereopsis, foveal suppression, and peripheral suppression in these subjects.One-way analysis of variance was used to compare quantitative data such as fine stereopsis, coarse stereopsis.Pearson’s Chi-square test was performed to compare categorical data such as dynamic stereopsis, foveal suppression and peripheral suppression.RESULTS:The subjects showed a statistically significant decline in fine stereopsis, coarse stereopsis, and dynamic stereopsis with increasing levels of anisometropia(P<0.001).Binocularity was af fected when induced anisometropia was more than 1 D(P<0.05).Foveal suppression and peripheral suppression were evident and increased in proportion to anisometropia(P<0.001).CONCLUSION:The relatively low degrees of anisometropia may have a potentially significant effect on high-grade binocular interaction. The mechanisms underlying the defect of binocularity seem to involve not only foveal suppression, but also peripheral suppression. 展开更多

The quantitative characterization of the full-field stress and displacement is significant for analyzing the failure and instability of engineering materials.Various optical measurement techniques such as photoelasticity, moiréand digital image correlation methods have been developed to achieve this goal. However, these methods are difficult to incorporate to determine the stress and displacement fields simultaneously because the tested models must contain particles and grating for displacement measurement;however, these elements will disturb the light passing through the tested models using photoelasticity. In this study,by combining photoelasticity and the sampling moirémethod,we developed a method to determine the stress and displacement fields simultaneously in a three-dimensional(3D)-printed photoelastic model with orthogonal grating. Then, the full-field stress was determined by analyzing 10 photoelastic patterns, and the displacement fields were calculated using the sampling moirémethod. The results indicate that the developed method can simultaneously determine the stress and displacement fields. 展开更多

The understanding of the structure morphology of oil-rich emulsion from enzyme-assisted extraction processing(EAEP)was a critical step to break the oil-rich emulsion structure in order to recover oil.Albeit EAEP method has been applied as an alternative way to conventional solvent extraction method, the structure morphology of oil-rich emulsion was still unclear. The current study aimed to investigate the structure morphology of oil-rich emulsion from EAEP using 3 D confocal Raman imaging technique. With increasing the enzymatic hydrolysis duration from 1 to 3 h,the stability of oil-rich emulsion was decreased as visualized in the 3 D confocal Raman images that the protein and oil were mixed together. The subsequent Raman spectrum analysis further revealed that the decreased stability of oil-rich emulsion was due to the protein aggregations via SS bonds or protein-lipid interactions. The conformational transfer in protein indicated the formation of a compact structure. 展开更多

Rhinoplasty in Asia is becoming increasingly widespread. When taking into consideration the anatomical differences between the features of Caucasian and Asian patients,it is unsurprising that knowledge gained from research on Caucasian rhinoplasty is not always applicable to Asian rhinoplasty.Furthermore, reviews aimed at describing the recent developments in Asian rhinoplasty are rare. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the latest trends in rhinoplasty for Asians by classifying it into three parts:methods, materials, and three-dimensional techniques, hopefully providing surgeons with references to aid in conducting rhinoplasty on Asians. 展开更多

The Weibullian behavior of single grain crushing strength was investigated experimentally and numerically with the aim of enhancing the understanding of rock grain breakage. The morphologies of pebble grains were obtained using white light 3D laser scanning and image processing.A grain shape library was constructed for grain shape analysis with different shape descriptors. The use of the shape library and grain stability analysis is discussed for a suggested procedure to rotate a grain to its most stable configuration.Single grain crushing tests were performed for 30 pebbles to obtain force-displacement curves and fracture patterns. Each grain was compressed diametrically between flat platens. As expected, the values of the stress at bulk fracture follow a Weibull distribution.A procedure for generating crushable agglomerates with realistic particle shapes was demonstrated, which was accomplished in the discrete element modeling(DEM)of the single grain crushing test. The work presented here is novel in that both the heterogeneous micro-structures and randomly distributed flaws are considered. The DEM results demonstrate that the proposed modeling approach and calibrated parameters are reliable and can reflect the crushing behavior of rock pebbles. Finally, three parametric studies were presented evaluating the effects of micro-crack density,micro-crack disorder, and grain morphology on the Weibullian behavior of the crushing strength, none of which has previously been thoroughly considered. These three studies provide a deeper insight into the origin of the Weibullian behavior of single grain crushing strength. 展开更多

Performance of the sensing system was validated by applying load step by step as well as cyclic load on FBG pressure sensors. A simulation study was carried out using the sensing platform to assess foot plantar pressure distribution arises from weight gaining and losing processes of pregnant woman. The monitored four different foot positions such as first metatarsus, second metatarsus,mid-foot and heel exhibited obvious differences during testing process. Foot plantar pressure of heel was 1. 7 times of the pressure occurred at the first and second metatarsus( fore-foot),while there was limited pressure occurred at the mid-foot position during weight gaining process of a female subject. The occurred pressures at the two metatarsus areas were around 90%( pressure ratio) of heel and decreased continuously as the increase of subject weight, but weight losing process had very limited influence on this pressure ratio. Center of gravity of pregnant woman was found to shift backward substantially during the weighting gaining process, leading to a significant rise of the heel pressure. Hence, the protection of the heel position for female is highly important during both pregnancy and after baby delivery. 展开更多

A new discretization technique is proposed for a three-dimensional(3D)tunnel face in weak strata with a random position in space. This method limits the angle, height, and thickness of the strata on the tunnel face. The original whole piece of soil is separated by a series of parallel planes, and two parallel planes are used as a stratum. Each radial discrete plane is separated when it passes through the strata, and the change in the soil properties of discrete points on the truncated plane is considered separately inside the strata.Considering the spatial and temporal characteristics of seismic waves,a pseudo-dynamic analysis of the tunnel face is carried out.The tunnel face active damage types under earthquake conditions are quantitatively analyzed, and the corresponding support pressure design diagrams are given for the case without weak strata. For the case containing weak strata, the presence of weak strata can have adverse effects on the face. The failure mechanism of the weak strata is given by the discretization method. For different friction angles, the presence of the weak strata changes the friction angles of the soils. For the thickness, location and angle of the weak strata, the variation in the support pressure is given in this paper. To more intuitively depict the change in the failure mechanism in the presence of weak strata, the change in the failure mechanism under different thicknesses and weaknesses of weak strata is plotted. 展开更多

Two near field methods, namely the integral method and differential method, were presented for giving second order mean drift forces and moments between two fixed submerged bodies in regular waves. For the integral method, with a series of mathematical manipulations, second order drift forces and moments could be easily expressed by distributed sources which could be calculated by source distribution techniques with the assumption that the amplitude of ship motions are small on the basis of the linear 3D frequency theory. For the differential method, drift forces and moments could be expressed by the derivative of velocity potential with respect to space coordinate. Because two bodies would behave as a single body while the clearance is very large, the numerical results of one sphere in such case were given and compared with analytical results of a single sphere which does not involve the effect of free surface. When submerged depth becomes enough large, a good agreement can be reached. Then the integral method was used to predict the second order drift forces and moments of two submerged spheres and spheroids with a small lateral separation distance in waves compared with the numerical results obtained by the differential method and they agree well. By comparison, it indicates the interaction effects between two submerged bodies have a profound influence on the drift forces and moments. In this paper, the forward speed effect on submerged spheres was also considered. 展开更多

Processing biomaterials into porous scaffolds for bone tissueengineering is a critical and a key step in defining and controlling their physicochemical, mechanical, and biological properties.Biomaterials such as polymers are commonlyprocessed into porous scaffolds using conventional processing techniques,e.g.,saltleaching.However,these traditional techniques have shown unavoidable limitations andseveral shortcomings. For instance,tissue-engineered porous scaffolds with a complexthree-dimensional(3D)geometric architecture mimicking the complexity of theextracellular matrix of native tissues and with the ability to fit into irregular tissue defectscannot be produced using the conventional processing techniques.3D printing hasrecently emerged as an advanced processing technology that enables the processing ofbiomaterials into 3D porous scaffolds with highly complex architectures and tunableshapes to precisely fit into irregular and complex tissue defects.3D printing providescomputer-based layer-by-layer additive manufacturing processes of highly precise andcomplex 3D structures with well-defined porosity and controlled mechanical propertiesin a highly reproducible manner.Furthermore,3D printing technology provides anaccurate patient-specific tissue defect model and enables the fabrication of a patientspecifictissue-engineered porous scaffold with pre-customized properties. 展开更多
