Acupuncture and moxibustion therapy non-specifically raises the pain threshold, relieves regional muscular tension, improves local blood circulation, accelerates elimination of algogenic substances such as acid metabolites, and promotes neural regeneration and functional rehabilitation. However, the effects of acupuncture are synthetically influenced by multiple factors, which vary with acu-puncture point, intensity, and manipulation. The present study explored the analgesic effects and mechanisms of specific Sancai acupuncture manipulation for sciatica. Results revealed that Sancai acupuncture manipulation significantly reduced inflammatory factor interleukin-6 expression in the blood serum of rats with sciatica, exhibited anti-inflammatory effects and promoted rehabilitation of injured nerves. In addition, Sancai acupuncture manipulation exhibited superior curative effects over conventional acupuncture manipulation. 展开更多

Objective: To explore the brain function mechanism of "liver-soothing and mind-regulating" acupuncture manipulation in intervening post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD).Methods: According to random number table method, 60 SD rats were randomly divided into blank group, model group, grabbing group, paroxetine group and acupuncture group. Except for the blank group, all the rats were established into PTSD models through electric shock and incarceration, with model replication for 7 days in total. The rats were given gavage, acupuncture intervention and grabbing fixation 1 h before modeling, with 6 days as 1 course of treatment. Grabbing treatment was performed for 2 courses, with 12 days in total. After modeling, functional near-infrared spectroscopy(fNIRS) system was adopted to collect and record the changes of concentration of Oxy-Hb, Deoxy-Hb and Total-Hb during 3 min in related brain regions of rats in each group after treatment for 5 consecutive days, and the brain function was evaluated. Results: According to the comparison of the time series of blood-oxygen concentration, there were significant differences between model group and blank group as well as grabbing group and blank group(P〈0.01, P〈0.01), no significant difference was found between model group and grabbing group(P〈0.05); there were significant differences between paroxetine group and grabbing group as well as acupuncture group and grabbing group(P〈0.05, P〈0.05), no significant difference was found between paroxetine group and acupuncture group(P〈0.05).Conclusion: "Liver-soothing and mind-regulating" acupuncture manipulation has a benign regulatory effect on the blood-oxygen concentration in cerebral cortex of PTSD rats, which may be the important brain function mechanism of "liver-soothing and mind-regulating" acupuncture manipulation in intervening PTSD. 展开更多

Objective To compare differences in therapeutic effects between acupuncture accelerating qi-flow along meridians (AQF) and conventional acupuncture (CA) in treating periarthritis of shoulder to find better acupuncture methods. Methods Sixty-four patients were randomly divided into two groups: group AQF, and group CA with 32 cases in each group. Jiānyú (肩髃 LI 15), Jiānliáo (肩髎 TE 14), Jiānzhēn (肩贞 SI 9), Bìnào (臂臑 LI 14), Qūchí (曲池 LI 11) and Wàiguān (外关 TE 5) on the affected side were used in both groups, and the two acupuncture methods were respectively used in the two groups for consecutive 2 courses. Pain and moving functions of shoulder and ability in daily life (ADL) were used as indices for evaluating therapeutic effects. Results The total effective rate was 96.9% (31/32) and 81.3% (26/32) in group AQF and group CA, respectively, showing superiority of AQF to CA (P〈0.05). Scores reflecting pain and moving functions of shoulder and ADL were all improved after treatment in both groups (all P〈0.05), and the improvement in group AQF was more obvious than those in group CA (all P〈0.05). Conclusion In treating periarthritis of shoulder, the acupuncture accelerating qi-flow along meridians was better than conventional acupuncture in alleviating pain of the shoulder, improving its moving function and elevating abilities in daily life. 展开更多

Objective To observe clinical efficacy of Ch/J:eng Yingyuan manipulation for migraine and its effects on endothelin (ET) and nitric oxide (NO). Methods One hundred and seventeen cases were randomly divided into a treatment group (59 cases) and a control group (58 cases). The Chifeng Yingyuan manipulation was applied in the treatment group while oral administration of flunarizine hydrochloride capsules was applied in the control group for consecutive 4 weeks. Before and after the treatment, the clinical efficacy and migraine score in both groups were compared; radioimmunoassay was used to test level of ET while nitrate reductase method was for level of NO. Results Compared between two groups, the total effective rate was 91.5% in the treatment group, which was superior to 70.7% in the control group (P〈0.05). After the treatment, the migraine scores were both significantly decreased in two groups (P〈0.05, P〈0.01), which was more obvious in the treatment group (P〈0.05). The level of ET and NO was significantly changed after treatment (P〈0.05, P〈0.01). Compared between two groups, the improvement of ET and NO in the treatment group was better than that in the control group (both P〈0.05). Conclusion The Chifeng Yingyuan manipulation has positive effect on migraine without any adverse reaction, which could maintain cerebrovascular vasomotor function by regulating level of ET and NO in the plasma. 展开更多

Many clinical trials and experimental studies claim that sham acupuncture is as effective as traditional Chinese acupuncture. However, these studies have no standard sham acupuncture control and many other factors can affect the clinical effect. These factors include needle retention time, treatment frequency, and the total number of treatments needed for satisfactory results, and all can change the clinical effect. The majority of existing acupuncture treatment studies do not consider these factors and lack standard dosage criteria. Therefore, it is still too early to conclude that sham acupuncture is as effective as traditional Chinese acupuncture. This article investigates the factors that influence the curative effect of acupuncture as to help set a standard for acupuncture studies in the future. 展开更多

Objective: To study the impact of De-qi (得气%, obtaining qi) and psychological factors on the efficacy of acupuncture treatment for primary dysmenorrhea, with an attempt to explore the relationship among De-qi, psychological factors, and clinical efficacy. Methods: The patients with primary dysmenorrhea were randomly assigned to a group of acupuncture with manual manipulation (manipulation group, n=67) and an acupuncture group without manipulation (non-manipulation group, n=64). Pain intensity and pain duration were used as measures for evaluating the therapeutic efficacy of the acupuncture treatment. De-qi, the sensations a patient experienced during the acupuncture treatment, was scored on a 4-point scale by the subjects. In addition, the psychological factors, including belief in acupuncture, the level of nervousness, anxiety, and depression, were quantitatively assessed. The personality of the subject was assessed using the Eysenck personality questionnaire (EPQ) and 16 personality factor questionnaire (16PF). Results: Complete data were obtained from 120 patients, 60 patients in each group. There were statistically significant differences in pain intensity (W=2410.0, P〈0.01 ) and pain duration (W=3181.0, P〈0.01) between the two groups. The number of De-qi acupoints (W=1150.5, P〈0.01) and the average intensity of De-qi (W=1141.0, P〈0.01) were significantly higher in the manipulation group as compared with their non-manipulation counterparts. The correlation coefficients between De-qi and therapeutic efficacy of acupuncture were greater than those between psychological factors and therapeutic efficacy. Conclusions: Compared with the psychological factors, De-qi contributed more to the pain-relieving effect of acupuncture in subjects with primary dysmenorrhea. Moreover, manual manipulation is a prerequisite for eliciting and enhancing the De-qi sensations, and De-qi is critical for achieving therapeutic effects. 展开更多
