A finite element model (FEM) of a rolling tire under steady state is established based on theoretical hydrodynamics and mechanics principles, in which factors, including tire type, water film thickness, pavement surface properties, and vehicle speed, are considered. With the FEM, braking distances under different operating conditions are calculated. Furthermore, the allowable water film thickness is determined by comparing braking distances calculated with friction management criteria and that required by road geometric design. The results show that the braking distance is affected by the above operating conditions. As a result, it is necessary to maintain consistency between geometric design braking distance requirements and pavement friction management to achieve safe road operations.展开更多

First, a finite element model of tire hydroplaning was established using the coupled EulerianLagrangian method, including a pneumatic tire model and a textured asphalt pavement model. Then, the frictional force on the tire-pavement interface at different speeds was calculated by the model. Based on vehicle braking mechanism and frictional energy dissipation,a calculation method for braking distance was proposed based on a three-stage braking process. The proposed method was verified by comparing the calculated hydroplaning speed and braking distance with field test results. Then, vehicle braking distances and wet friction coefficients were calculated under different conditions. The results show that thinner water film,a more complex tread pattern and higher tire inflation pressure all contribute to the vehicle braking performance; moreover, the pavement texture has obvious influence on vehicle braking behavior, especially at a high speed. The proposed method shows great effectiveness in predicting vehicle braking behavior on wet asphalt pavements.展开更多

Performance comparison between vehicles equipped with three-pitch fluctuating speed ratio limited-slip differential and common open differefitial is finished. The data from experiments prove that three-pitch fluctuating speed ratio limited-slip differential can increase the traction of a vehicle, improve its acceleration performance, decrease braking distance and limit sideslip. The basic structure of new differential is the same of open differential, the only difference is that they have different tooth profile, so the new differential has a high performance price.展开更多
