Current education system reform poses unprecedented opportunities for higher schools. The research proposed components and organization types for uni- versity/college spatial configuration based on campus spaces at home and abroad. In the background of sustainable design, the research took urban space design as references in order to explore effects of higher education theory on campus space design, analyze campus development trend and spatial configuration, as well as pro- vide references for massive urban university/college projects" construction and re-de- velopment. 展开更多

This paper, by introducing the conception of planning scheme of Zijingang West Campus of Zhejiang University, expounds how to integrate the traditional "human landscape" spirit into the planning and design of the modern campus, so as to create a personalized campus where cultural traditions are complementary to natural atmosphere. In this paper, with the campus planning and design as an extension as well as the blending and symbiosis between urban historical culture and natural scenery as the focus of attention, the Chinese thinking pattern stressing prefect harmony and in-depth dialogue between culture and nature is expected to be applied to the construction of modern cities to build and improve the "Shanshui city" planning system so that the planning concept that Chinese thought, "unity of man and nature", is used to build modern cities is carried forward. 展开更多

College campuses pride themselves in being leaders in promoting innovation in both technical and theoretical aspects of all fields of study, including sustainability. The drive for sustainability in higher education has become institutionalized in many college campuses in the form of offices of sustainability, as well as membership in the American Association for Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). In parallel, but not always in concert, are more grass-roots efforts by students to promote sustainability through recycling programs, urban agriculture, and similar initiatives. Students are often frustrated between the classroom lessons they learn about sustainability and the slow adoption of sustainable practices in the “real-world,” including on campus. In order to address this issue, faculty have begun to engage students in the sustainability challenges facing their own campuses. The Journal of Green Building showcases these projects in the New Directions in Teaching and Research section of the journal. As part of this series, this article will highlight a course at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in which students engage in green infrastructure planning projects for the campus. 展开更多

In about 1949,there was a large-scale migration of architects from the mainland to Hong Kong,China.Among them were those important figures in the modern Chinese architectural history such as Robert Fan,Su Gin-Djih,and Chu Pin.Their arrival at this colony had changed its architectural practice substantially from professional organization to actually built environment.Their unique contributions to Hong Kong’s modern architecture have been a new research interest in recent years. This paper tells a story about Robert Fan and his design of the Chung Chi College campus in the 1950s with an intention to reveal the multiaspects of the so called“migrant architects”through a single architectural event. The author tries to capture the intertwining relationship between the migrant architects and educators through the reconstruction of the recruitment process for a campus architect by Chung Chi College and to identify Mr.Robert Fan’s concept of campus planning with reference to his early design experience in the mainland of China. 展开更多

The New Academic Center achieved a LEED Platinum rating, the first for Cornell’s core campus. While the obligation to meet the University’s green building criteria was a given, the design was largely influenced by historic preservation and an interest in maintaining views of an historic quadrangle and valuable campus green space. These drivers led to a comprehensive design process in alignment with the University’s long term goals for overall campus redevelopment. The first phase initiative,a below-grade classroom addition, provides new space for Law School programs in an exceptionally energy efficient building with concurrent environmental benefits, including preservation of open space and enhanced storm-water management. In addition,as a thoughtful addition to a landmark building, the project emphasized the use of both existing and local building materials. 展开更多

In this study, through case studies of campus architectural heritage, the preservation of architectural heritage on campuses is explored. In addition, the effects of architectural heritage preservation on the identity of campuses are investigated, and the corresponding effects on present-day value and spatial experience are analysed. The case studies involve early campuses planned in East Asia by Henry Murphy, and they feature American designs and building styles. In this study, first, the characteristics of the campuses planned by Henry Murphy are analysed.Next, the characteristics of the preserved architectural heritage at Chosen Christian College are analysed. Finally, with a focus on the preservation of architectural heritage at Shanghai College, the value of architectural heritage and the spatial experience associated with campus development are analysed.Chosen Christian College focused on maintaining the authenticity of buildings, and Shanghai College attempted to consolidate the identity of the campus through maximizing the spatial experience of the architectural heritage group and preserving architectural heritage. Thus,Shanghai College was more influenced by Henry Murphy’s master plan in the development and growth of the campus, and tried to carry on the design concept of the architect and the image of the campus.Conversely,Chosen Christian College was able to retain its original design over nearly a century with the use of all-stone buildings,as Henry Murphy proposed, but no significant trace of the early general plan remains. 展开更多

Universities across the globe are recognizing the need to implement sustainable landscaping practices in order to support wildlife, improve water quality and positively impact human health and wellbeing. Georgia Institute of Technology learned that such sustainable practices, when properly aligned with overarching campus goals, can also enable continuous, collaborative decision-making and student engagement. The Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) is a leading research university situated on 426 acres of land in midtown Atlanta, Georgia, with a student population of 27,000 (Fall 2017). An urban oasis in the center of town, Georgia Tech’s campus offers 312.5 landscaped acres, 3.5 naturalized acres and 110 acres of buildings. The campus is also a level II certified arboretum boasting 12,000+ trees in its urban forest. Prior to the 1990s, Georgia Tech was commonly referred to as a concrete and brick campus with very little landscape. However, in 1999 all that changed when the Georgia Tech administration decided to invest in sustainable landscaping, including the recruitment of qualified staff with specific skill sets to take on this challenge. The Institute’s initial landscape master plan objectives were to reduce impervious surfaces such as surface parking lots, increase woodland coverage and enlarge the tree canopy. A significant amount of sustainable landscape practices and collaborative methods grew from these initial objectives. Establishing a plan with clear goals, having the support of executive leadership and employing the right team members enabled the Georgia Tech campus to be transformed from a concrete jungle to a forested, urban oasis in less than 20 years. 展开更多
