By combining a graphene SPW and nonlinear material, we propose a novel graphene/AlGaAs SPW structure for terahertz wave difference frequency generation(DFG) under near-infrared pumps. The composite waveguide, which supports single-mode operation at terahertz frequencies and guides two pumps by a high-index-contrast AlGaAs∕Al Oxstructure, can confine terahertz waves tightly and realize good mode field overlap of three waves. The phase-matching condition is satisfied via artificial birefringence in an AlGaAs∕Al Ox waveguide together with the tunability of graphene, and the phase-matching terahertz wave frequency varies from 4 to 7 THz when the Fermi energy level of graphene changes from 0.848 to 2.456 eV. Based on the coupled-mode theory, we investigate the power-normalized conversion efficiency for the tunable terahertz wave DFG process by using the finite difference method under continuous wave pumps, where the tunable bandwidth can reach 2 THz with considerable conversion efficiency. To exploit the high peak powers of pulses, we also discuss optical pulse evolutions for pulse-pumped terahertz wave DFG processes.展开更多

A monolithic tandem lithium niobate superlattice was employed as the nonlinear crystal with a uniform grating section for the DFG process, followed by a chirp section for the optical parametric amplification process. The impacts of pump pulse shape, primary signal power, input beam diameter, and crystal structure on the pump-to-idler conversion efficiency of the AA-DFG system were comprehensively studied by numerically solving the coupled wave equations. It is concluded that square pump pulse and high primary signal power are beneficial to high pump-to-idler conversion efficiency. In addition, tighter input beam focus and smaller DFG length proportion could redeem the reduction in conversion efficiency resulting from wider acceptance bandwidths for the input lasers. We believe that such systems combining the merits of high stability inherited from cavity-free configuration and high efficiency attributed from the cascaded nonlinear conversion should be of great interest to a wide community, especially when the pulse shaping technique is incorporated.展开更多

Human gallstone samples obtained from 24 patients were analyzed with their infrared absorption spectra. It was found that the principal components of the gallstones were different for the different patients and that the gallstone samples used in this research could be classified into four groups, i.e., mixed stones, calcium bilirubinate stones, cholesterol stones, and calcium carbonate stones. In addition, some gallstone samples had different compositions within the single stone. The mid-infrared laser tunable within a wavelength range of 5.5 - 10 μm was irradiated to the cholesterol stones at two different wavelengths of 6.83 and 6.03 μm, where the cholesterol stones had relatively strong and weak absorption peaks, respectively. As the result, the cholesterol stones were more efficiently ablated at the wavelength of 6.83 μm with the strong absorption peak. Therefore, it is suggested that the gallstones could be efficiently ablated by tuning the wavelength of the laser to the strong absorption peak of the gallstones. The higher efficiency of the ablation using the characteristic absorption peaks should lead to the safer treatment without damage to the surrounding normal tissues. In order to identify the composition of the gallstones in the patients, endoscopic and spectroscopic diagnosis using the DFG laser and an optical fiber probe made with two hollow optical fibers and a diamond attenuation total reflection prism should be useful. The absorption spectrum of the gallstones in the patients could be measured by measuring the energy of the DFG laser transmitted through the optical fiber probe and by scanning the wavelength of the DFG laser.展开更多

The second-order wave force is calculated using the full-field quadratic transfer function(QTF). The coupled effect of the horizontal motions, such as surge, sway and yaw motions, and the set-down motion are taken into consideration by the nonlinear restoring matrix. The time-domain analysis with 50-yr random sea state is performed. A comparison of the results of different case studies is made to assess the influence of second-order wave force on the motions of the platform. The analysis shows that the second-order wave force has a major impact on motions of the TLP. The second-order difference-frequency wave force has an obvious influence on the low-frequency motions of surge and sway, and also will induce a large set-down motion which is an important part of heave motion. Besides, the second-order sum-frequency force will induce a set of high-frequency motions of roll and pitch. However, little influence of second-order wave force is found on the yaw motion.展开更多

文摘Energy storage systems(ESS)and permanent magnet synchronous generators(PMSG)are speculated to be able to exhibit frequency regulation capabilities by adding differential and proportional control loops with different control objectives. The available PMSG kinetic energy and charging/discharging capacities of the ESS were restricted. To improve the inertia response and frequency control capability,we propose a short-term frequency support strategy for the ESS and PMSG.To this end,the weights were embedded in the control loops to adjust the participation of the differential and proportional controls based on the system frequency excursion. The effectiveness of the proposed control strategy was verified using PSCAD/EMTDC.The simulations revealed that the proposed strategy could improve the maximum rate of change of the frequency nadir and maximum frequency excursion. Therefore,it provides a promising solution of ancillary services for frequency regulation of PMSG and ESS.
文摘A novel technique of lithotripsy was investigated with a mid-infrared tunable pulsed laser using difference-frequency generation (DFG). The absorption spectrum of the gallstones in the patients could be measured by measuring the energy of the DFG laser transmitted through the optical fiber probe and by scanning the wavelength of the DFG laser.

文摘We propose a novel scheme for THz wave generation by repeated and continuous frequency conversions from pump wave to high-order Stokes waves(HSWs).The repeated frequency conversions are accomplished by oscillations of Stoke waves in resonant cavity(RC)where low-order Stokes waves(LSWs)are converted to high-order Stokes waves again and again. The continuous frequency conversions are accomplished by optimized cascaded difference frequency generation(OCDFG)where the poling periods of the optical crystal are aperiodic leading to the frequency conversions from low-order Stokes waves to high-order Stokes waves uninterruptedly and unidirectionally.Combined with the repeated and continuous frequency conversions, the optical-to-THz energy conversion efficiency(OTECE)exceeds 26%at 300 K and 43%at 100 K with pump intensities of 300 MW/cm^(2).

文摘By analyzing the signal model of stepped-frequency waveform,a novel method for velocity measurement is proposed. The method is based on Doppler frequency difference which is achieved by using Hough transform. As the estimated velocity is inversely proportional to the frequency step size instead of the carrier frequency of the transmitted signal as the pulse-Doppler(PD)processing,the new algorithm can achieve much wider unambiguous velocity range.Furthermore,non-coherent integration of the sub-pulses with different carrier frequencies can be implemented by Hough transform to improve the anti-noise performance.Besides, field experimental results show that the high range resolution profile(HRRP)of a bullet with high speed can be reconstructed correctly without distortion.

文摘As renewable energy resources increasingly penetrate the electric grid, the inertia capability of power systems has become a developmental bottleneck.Nevertheless, the importance of primary frequency response(PFR)when making generation-expansion plans has been largely ignored. In this paper,we propose an optimal generation-expansion planning framework for wind and thermal power plants that takes PFR into account. The model is based on the frequency equivalent model. It includes investment,startup/shutdown,and typical operating costs for both thermal and renewable generators. The linearization constraints of PFR are derived theoretically.Case studies based on the modified IEEE 39-bus system demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed method.Compared with methods that ignore PFR,the method proposed in this paper can effectively reduce the cost of the entire planning and operation cycle, improving the accommodation rate of renewable energy.

文摘Optical frequency combs have emerged as an important tool enabling diverse applications from test-and-measurement,including spectroscopy, metrology, precision distance measurement, sensing,as well as optical and microwave waveform synthesis, signal processing, and communications.Several techniques exist to generate optical frequency combs, such as mode-locked lasers,Kerr micro-resonators,and electro-optic modulation.Important characteristics of optical frequency combs include the number of comb lines, their spacing, spectral shape and/or flatness, and intensity noise. While mode-locked lasers and Kerr micro-resonators can be used to obtain a large number of comb lines compared to electro-optic modulation, the latter provides increased flexibility in tuning the comb spacing. For some applications in optical communications and microwave photonics,a high degree of integration may be more desirable over a very large number of comb lines. In this paper,we review recent progress on integrated electro-optic frequency comb generators, including those based on indium phosphide, lithium niobate, and silicon photonics.
文摘A tunable continuous wave(cw) mid-infrared(MIR) laser based on difference-frequency generation(DFG) in a 1.5-cm long AgGaS2 nonlinear crystal for trace gas detection is reported. Two visible and near-infrared diode lasers were used as pump and signal sources. The MIR-DFG laser was tunable in a wavelength range of 4.75 μm-4.88 μm.The phase-matching(PM) condition was non-critically achieved by adjusting the temperature of the crystal for fixed pairs of input pump and signal wavelengths. The required PM temperatures of the generated MIR-DFG wavelengths have been calculated by using three sets of recent Sellmeier equations and the temperature-dispersion equations of AgGaS2 given by Willer U,et al.(Willer U,Blanke T and Schade W 2001 Appl.Opt.40 5439).Then the calculated PM temperatures are compared with the experimental values. The performance of the MIR-DFG laser is shown by the trace detection of the P(16) carbon monoxide(12C16O) absorption line in a laboratory-fabricated absorption cell. The enhanced sensitivity of about 0.6×10 4 was obtained through the long path absorption provided by consecutive reflections between coated cylindrical mirrors of a constructed cell.

文摘This paper presents a study on the motion response of a tension-leg platform(TLP) under first-and second-order wave forces, including the mean-drift force, difference and sum-frequency forces. However, little influence of second-order wave force is found on the yaw motion.
