Geochemical Characteristics of Eolian Deposits on the Eastern Margin of the Tibetan Plateau and Implications for Provenance 被引量:6

Eolian dust deposition is intimately related to atmospheric circulation and environmental setting of the source region,and therefore is an invaluable tool for studying the evolutionary history of atmospheric circulation patterns and paleoclimatic change.Identifying the provenance of any eolian deposit is crucial not only for reconstructing the paleoenvironmental history of the dust source region,but also for understanding the paleoclimatic significance of various indices.Loess and paleosol samples from the Garze region on the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) were analyzed for their elemental (major and trace elements) and isotopic (Sm-Nd) geochemistry and compared with those of Northern Chinese (NC) loess formed at the same age.The results show that the geochemical compositions of the Garze loess and paleosol samples are similar to those eolian deposits on the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP),and also resemble the average UCC.This indicates that the eolian deposits on the eastern margin of the TP were derived from well-mixed sedimentary protoliths that had undergone numerous upper crustal recycling processes,just as with the CLP loess deposits.However,compared with NC loess,the Garze samples have higher ∑REE,Li,Rb,Zr,Cs,Hf and Bi concentrations,higher TiO2/Al2O3,Hf/Nb,La/Nb,Th/Nb and lower K2O/TiO2,Zr/Hf,Ba/Rb ratios.From the Sm-Nd isotopic geochemistry,εNd(0) and 147Sm/144Nd values of Garze loess and paleosol samples are clearly lower than the NC loess.The higher Bi,Zr and Hf concentrations are relevant to the widely distributed acid-magmatic rocks in this region,whereas the higher contents of Li,Cs,Rb are attributed to the high background values of the TP.The geochemical characteristics of the Garze loess and paleosol samples further prove that the local glacial and other Quaternary detrital sediments are predominantly the contributors for the eolian deposits on the eastern margin of the TP.Stable element concentrations and their ratios in the Garze loess and paleosol samples formed at different times have relatively greater variation ranges in comparison with the NC loess,indicating that the source regions for eolian deposits have been unstable since the late Early Pleistocene.We attribute the instability of dust sources to variable earth surface conditions and the changeable TP winter monsoon in direction and intensity,which are in turn related to the uplift of the TP. 展开更多

In the East Asian monsoon region, eolian deposits widely distributed in the middle-lower reaches of the Yantgze River are among the best materials available for studies on Quaternary climate change in the subtropical zone of Southern China. Typical eolian deposits in this region include upper Xiashu Loess (XL) and underlying Vermiculated Red Soil (VRS) layers. In this paper, chronological and paleoclimatic studies are conducted on an eolian deposit sequence near Jiujiang (J J) city in northern Jiangxi province. A magnetostratigraphic study, combined with optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating, is conducted on the JJ section and provides further evidence that eolian deposits in the middle-lower reaches of the Yangtze River have been formed since the late Early Pleistocene, and that the boundary age between the XL and VRS layers is about 300-400 kaBP. In grain-size records of the JJ section, the median grain-size and content of the 〉30μn size fraction increase sharply after 300-400 kaBP, representing an East Asian winter monsoon intensification event. Further pollen analysis reveals differing pollen assemblages before and after 300-400 kaBP: there is an evident increase in plants adapted to grow in a warm humid environment after 300-400 kaBP, implying an increase in precipitation caused by intensification of the East Asian summer monsoon. Global ice volume and uplift of the Tibet Plateau (TP) are regarded as crucial factors influencing variations of the East Asian monsoon on a long-term scale. The deep-sea JlSO record, which reflects variations in global ice volume, shows no obvious change after 300-400 kaBP. Moreover, the influence of global ice volume changes on the East Asian summer and winter monsoons is inverse; the global ice volume increase (decrease) implies a strengthened (weakened) winter monsoon and weakened (strengthened) summer monsoon. We therefore interpret the coupled intensifications of the East Asian summer and winter monsoons at about 300-400 kaBP to the uplift of the TP in the Middle Pleistocene. This climate event is also documented in eolian deposits from the southern margin of the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) and from the desert-loess transitional belt. However, it is not recorded in the loess-paleosol sequences from the central part of the CLP, thereby indicating differing climate responses to TP uplift in different regions, which requires further study. 展开更多

To understand the provenance and evolution of eolian input in the last 1.95 Ma in the Parece Vela Basin in the eastern Philippine Sea, the clay mineral assemblage of a gravity core PV090510 from the basin was investigated using paleogeomagnetic dating and X-ray diffraction. The assemblage of the core mainly consisted of smectite (-46%) and illite (-40%), with some chlorite (-10%) and kaolinite (-4%). Analysis of the provenance of these minerals suggested that smectite was mainly derived from volcanic rocks of the Mariana Arc, while illite, chlorite, and kaolinite were mainly transported as eolian dust by the East Asian monsoon from central Asia. We used the ratio of (illite+chlorite+kaolinite)/smectite as a proxy for Asian eolian input to the Parece Vela Basin since 1.95 Ma. This ratio followed glacial and interglacial cycles and was consistent with the intensity of the East Asian monsoon and aridity of central Asia since 1.95 Ma. In this study Chengdu Red Earth (CRE) from the Chengdu Plain (CP),Sichuan province,was analyzed for its elemental (major and trace elements) and isotopic (Sm-Nd) geochemistry and compared with Pleistocene loess and paleosol samples from the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) in Northern China.The geochemical composition of CRE is similar to north China loess,and also resembles the average UCC.This indicates that CRE,as loess deposits in Northern China,was derived from well-mixed sedimentary protoliths that have undergone numerous upper crustal recycling processes.However,obvious differences in the geochemical characteristics of CRE and the north China loess are also revealed in our results.For chemically stable elements,CRE has higher Ti,Zr,Hf and lower ΣREE,Ba contents in comparison with loess samples from the CLP.Further analysis shows that CRE has higher TiO2/Al2O3,SiO2/Al2O3,Ba/Rb and lower Ce/Yb,Eu/Yb,LaN/YbN and ΣLREE/ ΣHREE ratios.In Sm-Nd isotopic geochemistry,Sm and Nd content and the εNd(0) value in CRE are significantly higher than those in north China loess.The higher TiO2 content in CRE coincided with a high background concentration of Ti in the Sichuan Basin and the surrounding regions.The lower ΣREE and higher Sm,Nd,εNd(0) values are related to the wide distribution of basalt in the southwest Sichuan Basin.The elemental and isotopic geochemistry of CRE indicates that eolian materials in the CP predominantly come from the Sichuan Basin and the surrounding regions,which differs from loess deposits in the CLP. 展开更多

The Qaidam Basin is one of the main areas where the desert of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau is distributed.According to the envirotunment records and the age of stratigraphy in Xiaxitai section in southeast part of Qaidam Basin,this paper reached the following conclusions: the desert development, formation of the cold-dry climate, evolution of natural environment and their reverse changes occurred frequently since the late glacial. In eolian sand deposits, the YoungerDryas event clearly appeared, which manifesed a dry-cold climatic period. Now there are two different opinions about theclimatic effect of Younger Dryas. According to the predecessors’ research and the field work of the authors, it is considered that the Younger Dryas event not only exists in different climatic zones of China, but the manifests the unitary drycold climatic effect. 展开更多

Although the eastern China Seas and their adjacent regions are downwind of East Asian dust sources and have potentially high atmospheric input, study on the eolian dust in these regions is limited. This study on the compositions of eolian dust indicated that dust concentration and particle sizes varied with seasons and meteorologic conditions, that mineral and chemical compositions have significant regional variation, and that high Fe content is one of the characteristics of eolian dust which was found to be a mixture of natural loess and/or soil and anthropogenic matter that contained fairly high S and heavy metals. 展开更多

Changes in diffuse reflectance spectroscopy properties of hematite in sediments from the North Pacific Ocean and implications for eolian dust evolution history

Eolian dust preserved in deep-sea sediments of the North Pacific Ocean(NPO) is an important recorder of paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental changes in the Asian inland. To better understand changes in the dust provenances, in this study diffuse reflectance spectroscopy(DRS) was used to extract the eolian signal recorded in sediments of ODP Hole 885 A recovered from the NPO. First, we systematically investigated sieving effects on the DRS data; then band positions of hematite(obtained from the second order derivative curves of the K-M remission function spectrum derived from the DRS) were used to distinguish different provenances of the eolian dust preserved in the pelagic sediments of this hole. Our results show that the sieving(38 μm) process can suppress effectively the experimental errors. Eolian signatures from Chinese Loess Plateau(CLP) sources and non-CLP-sources have been identified in the pelagic sediments of ODP Hole 885 A from the late Pliocene to the early Pleistocene. The provenance differences account for the discrepancies in the eolian records recovered from the pelagic sediments in the NPO and profiles in the CLP. Temporal changes in dust provenances are caused by the latitudinal movement of the westerly jet mainstream. The hematite DRS band position is a useful tool to distinguish the provenance of eolian components preserved in pelagic sediments. 展开更多

XRF和ICP-MS测定风成沉积铜镍锌等9种重金属元素的对比分析

风成沉积的重金属元素对生态环境变化具有指示意义,因此快速、准确地测定其含量显得特别重要。目前,主要通过XRF(X射线荧光光谱)和ICP-MS(电感耦合等离子体质谱)方法测定重金属元素的含量。文章对四个风成沉积剖面(黄土高原西峰剖面,青... 风成沉积的重金属元素对生态环境变化具有指示意义,因此快速、准确地测定其含量显得特别重要。目前,主要通过XRF(X射线荧光光谱)和ICP-MS(电感耦合等离子体质谱)方法测定重金属元素的含量。文章对四个风成沉积剖面(黄土高原西峰剖面,青藏高原东北部种羊场剖面、泉吉河剖面、依毛剖面)247件样品进行了XRF和ICP-MS分析,并对其中9种重金属元素的含量进行了初步对比分析。结果表明:1. Cu、Ni、Zn的XRF测试结果和ICP-MS测试结果高度一致(Pearson相关系数r大于0.84)。2. Co、Pb的XRF测试结果和ICP-MS测试结果在大多数剖面中具有较好的一致性,但在个别剖面中的一致性较差。3.在种羊场和泉吉河剖面中,Th的XRF测试结果比ICP-MS的测试结果略低。两种方法测得的As的含量在四个剖面中随深度的变化趋势高度一致;As的XRF测试结果明显比ICP-MS的测试结果低,差值可达11.5μg/g(相对于XRF法测定值的变化幅度达214%)。4. Cr和T的XRF测试结果高于ICP-MS的测试结果,两种方法测得的Cr含量的差值达40μg/g。尽管ICP-MS法具有比XRF法更高的精度,但对于Cu、Ni、Zn,采用高效廉价的XRF法能得到与ICP-MS法相媲美的测试结果。5.西峰、种羊场剖面采用XRF法测得的Cu、Ni、Zn、As含量与磁化率呈现相似的变化,表明这些元素亦可指示风成沉积记录的气候环境变化。 展开更多

外掺剂联合MICP固化风积沙试验研究

微生物诱导碳酸钙沉淀技术(MICP)结合纤维加筋或外加剂已成为岩土体改良的新型方式,在土地荒漠化治理等场景具有广阔的应用前景。以取自毛乌素沙漠的风积沙为研究对象,在MICP联合纤维加筋的基础上,分别引入料姜石和氧化钙,使得两种无机... 微生物诱导碳酸钙沉淀技术(MICP)结合纤维加筋或外加剂已成为岩土体改良的新型方式,在土地荒漠化治理等场景具有广阔的应用前景。以取自毛乌素沙漠的风积沙为研究对象,在MICP联合纤维加筋的基础上,分别引入料姜石和氧化钙,使得两种无机化合物对微生物过程及加固效果产生影响,在最优养护条件下进行风积沙的固化试验,通过无侧限抗压强度试验、三轴试验、扫描电镜试验等,从宏观、微观角度系统分析外掺剂参与固化后试样的力学特性、破坏形态及作用机理。结果表明,MICP纤维加筋试样的强度随料姜石掺量的增加呈现增大趋势,并在掺量为4%时达到峰值,较未掺入料姜石试样的强度提高了37.3%;MICP纤维加筋试样的强度随氧化钙掺量的增加呈现先减小后增大的趋势,并在掺量达到1%时强度下降了74.6%;氧化钙对细菌具有明显的抑制作用,当氧化钙掺量达到0.8%时,大部分细菌已失去活性,OD_(600)值降至最低,为0.107;料姜石对MICP纤维加筋固化效果的作用机理主要表现在料姜石可有效地黏结砂土颗粒和填充孔隙,从而提高试样的整体稳定性。研究成果可为风积沙固化实践和实际工程应用提供参考依据。 展开更多

On the basis of a newly-constructed record of magnetic susceptibility (SUS) and the depositional rate change of eolian loess-red clay sequences in the last 7.2 Ma BP from the hea Plateau, together with a cornperison of a record of °18O values from the equatorial East Pacific Ocean and eolian Quartz flux variations fmm the North Pacific Ocean, the evolutiomuy process of the Late Cenozoic Great Glaciation in the Northern Hemisphere can be divided into three stages: the arrival stage around 7.2–3.4 Ma BP, the initial stage at about 3.4—2.6 Ma BP, and the Great Ice Age since 2.6 Ma BP. The evolution of the East Asian monsoon is characterized by paid winter and summer monsoons, and it is basically composed of the initial stage of weak winter and summer monsoons, the transitional stage of simultaneous increase in intensity of winter and summer monsoons, and the prevailing stage of strong winter and week summer monsoons, or weak winter and strong summer monsoons. The Late Cenowic global tectonic uplift, paaicdarly the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau uplift and the associated CO2 concentration variation, controls the dng processes of the onset of Great Glaciation and the long-term changes of East Asian monsoom climate in the Northern Hemisphere to a large extent. History and variability of Asian interior aridity recorded by eolian flux in the Chinese Loess Plateau during the past 7 Ma 被引量:23

Eolian flux in the Chinese Loess Plateau was reconstructed by measuring the dry bulk density and CaCO3 content of the late Cenozoic loess-paleosol-red clay sequences in the Lingtai profile. Comparison of eolian flux variation between the Lingtai profile and the ODP sites 885/886 in the North Pacific shows a significant wet-dry variability in addition to a gradual drying trend in the dust source regions in interior Asia. Especially, the increase of eolian fluxes from both continental and pelagic eolian sediments indicates a sharp drying of the dust source regions between 3.6 and 2.6 MaBP, which might be attributed to the tectonic uplift of the Tibetan Plateau, which cut down the moisture input to the interior Asia. The average value and variability of eolian flux are higher after 2.6 MaBP than before, which may be related to the Quaternary climatic fluctuations on the glacial-interglacial timescale after the commencement of major Northern Hemisphere Glaciations. The eolian fluxes of the Lingtai profile and Core V21-146 in northwest Pacific show a synchronous variation on the 103-105 a timescale, indicating that the flux variations from both continental and marine records are closely correlated to the Quaternary climatic fluctuation forced by the ice volume changes on a global scale. 展开更多

The expansion of inland Asia deserts has considerably influenced the environmental, social and economic activities in Asia. Aridification of inland Asia, especially timing of the initiation of Asian desertification, is a contentious topic in paleoclimatology. Late Cenozoic eolian loess-red clay sequences on the Chinese Loess Plateau, which possess abundant paleoclimatic and paleo-environmental information, can be regarded as an indicator of inland Asia desertification. Here we present a detailed magnetostratigraphic investigation of a new red clay sequence about 654 m in Zhuanglang located at the western Chinese Loess Plateau. Sedimentological, geochemical, mineralogical, and quartz morphological lines of evidence show that the red clay is of eolian origin. Magnetostratigraphic correlations indicate that this core sequence spans from 25.6 to 4.8 Ma, and typical eolian red clay appears as early as 25 Ma. This extends the lower limit of the red clay on the Chinese Loess Plateau from the previously thought early Miocene back into the late Oligocene. This new red clay record further implies that the inland Asia desertification was initiated at least by the late Oligocene. This sequence provides a unique high-resolution geological record for understanding the inland Asia desertification process since the late Oligocene. 展开更多

The tempo-spatial development of the Cenozoic Asian aridification across the Eocene-Oligocene and its controlling factors are important scientific topics in Earth Sciences, which are pertinent to regional and global tectonic and climatic events. However, sedimentary rocks preserving the record of aridification during this time from central Asia(ACA) are rare. Here we present a preliminary analysis of sedimentary facies of the lower Paleogene in the northeastern Tajik Basin, which reveals that: the lower part of the studied section is dominated by shallow marine deposits of the Paratethys, the middle part is typical of alternations of eolian dune and fluvial deposits, the upper part is represented by eolian loess-sandy loess(L&SL) like facies, and the top exhibits alternations of fluvial-lacustrine and loess like facies. Based on a chronological framework derived from preliminary magnetostratigraphy, published U-Pb dating of a volcanic ash, and regional litho-stratigraphic correlations, we determine that eolian and L&SL facies accumulated in the northeastern Tajik Basin during the Late Eocene and through most of the Oligocene. These sedimentary units indicate that semi-arid to arid environments of ACA had developed at least since the late Eocene. This initial aridification is closely linked to the westward retreat of the Paratethys that was likely driven by a combination of tectonic activity and sea level changes. 展开更多

The geomorphic evolution of northwestern China during the Cenozoic has been a subject of much geological interest because of its link with the uplift of the Himalayan-Tibetan complex.Much information about these changes is recoverable from the sedimentary sequences of the region.We report here on the thick eolian deposits mantling the Huajialing Mountains,a relatively flat mountain range in the western Loess Plateau.Correlation of magnetic susceptibility stratigraphy with the QA-I Miocene eolian sequence dates a 134.7 m section(NL-VII) for the interval from 18.7 to 11.8 Ma,as confirmed by micro-mammalian fossils.These eolian deposits demonstrate a much wider distribution of the Miocene eolian deposits,and also indicate that the topography contrasts in the western Loess Plateau,including the uplifts of the Huajialing Mountains and the bedrock highlands in the Qinan region,were formed by the early Miocene.The near-continuous Miocene eolian sequence from 18.7 to 11.8 Ma indicates that the substratum of Huajialing had not experienced any intense tectonic changes during this time interval,which suggests further,the relative tectonic stability of the nearby Tibetan Plateau. 展开更多

The Neogene eolian deposits in the Xining Basin are valuable archive for studying the evolution of the Asian monsoon system and geomorphic processes of Northwest China. The Neogene eolian deposits that paleomagnetically dated at about 14 Ma probably were sourced from the middle and west Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau(QTP) as indicated by elemental compositions and magnetic properties. This study provides the Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic ratios of different sediments(gravels from the river terraces, Neogene eolian deposits and Quaternary loess) in the Xining Basin. The results show that:(1) Sr-Nd isotopic compositions of terrace gravels are different from those of the Neogene and Quaternary eolian deposits, although the Nd isotope ratios of gravel on the 10 th terrace(T10) and eolian deposits are similar.(2) Pb isotopic compositions of river gravels are obviously different from the eolian deposits in the Xining Basin. However, Pb isotopic compositions of eolian deposits in the basin are similar to those of eolian deposits in the central Chinese Loess Plateau.(3) Sr-Nd-Pb isotope results indicate that the Neogene eolian deposits in the Xining Basin were probably sourced from remote areas outside of the basin by long-distance transportation. The Qaidam Basin is probably an important source area for the eolian deposits in the Xining Basin. 展开更多

Magnetic properties and their paleoclimatic implications revealed from the last glacial eolian sedimentary sequence in Pengze,Jiangxi

The sand-hill section in Hongguang, Pengze County, Jiangxi Province is composed of eolian sand beds interbedded with 12 weakly-pedogenetic paleosols, and this sedimentary sequence was formed from about 25 to 13 kaBP. A detailed rock-magnetic study demonstrates that the magnetic minerals in the sequence are dominated by multi-domain magnetite grains in addition to small amounts of maghemite and hematite. Compared with the eolian sand beds, the paleosols are characterized by smaller magnetic particles, higher proportion of low-coercivity minerals and markedly increase in the magnetic mineral content. In the section, various magnetic parameters (K, ARM, SIRM and S ratios) display a roughly gradual increase from eolian sand beds to the overlying paleosols but an abrupt decrease from paleosols to the overlying eolian sand beds. The content of low-coercivity magnetic minerals shows the lowest values in the second eolian sand bed from the bottom of the section, and from the bed upwards it gradually increases on the whole in the eolian sand beds. These magnetic properties reflect regional climatic changes during the last glacial maximum. 展开更多
