The surrounding geological conditions and supporting structures of underground engineering are often updated during construction, and these updates require repeated numerical modeling. To improve the numerical modeling efficiency of underground engineering,a modularized and parametric modeling cloud server is developed by using Python codes. The basic framework of the cloud server is as follows:input the modeling parameters into the web platform, implement Rhino software and FLAC3D software to model and run simulations in the cloud server, and return the simulation results to the web platform. The modeling program can automatically generate instructions that can run the modeling process in Rhino based on the input modeling parameters. The main modules of the modeling program include modeling the 3D geological structures, the underground engineering structures, and the supporting structures as well as meshing the geometric models. In particular, various cross-sections of underground caverns are crafted as parametricmodules in themodeling program.Themodularized and parametric modeling program is used for a finite element simulation of the underground powerhouse of the Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station. This complicatedmodel is rapidly generated for the simulation, and the simulation results are reasonable. Thus, this modularized and parametric modeling program is applicable for three-dimensional finite element simulations and analyses. 展开更多

The seismic intensities, lithologic characteristics and terrain features from a 3000 km2-region near the epicenter of the Lushan earthquake are used to analyze earthquake-induced geological disaster. The preliminary results indicate that secondary effects of the earthquake will affect specific areas, including those with glutenite and carbonate bedrock, a seismic intensity of IX, slopes between 40° and 50°, elevations of less than 2500 m, slope change rates between 20° and 30°, slope curvatures from - 1 to -0.5 and 0. 5 to 1, and relief between 50 and 100 m. Regions with susceptibility indices greater than 0.71 are prone to landslides and collapses. The secondary features are mainly distributed on both sides of the ridges that extend from Baosheng to Shuangshi and from Baosheng to Longxing. Other features are scattered on both sides of the ridges that extend from Qishuping to Baosheng and from Masangping to Lingguan. The distribution of the earthquake-related features trends in the NE direction, and the area that was most affected by the Lushan earthquake covers approximately 52.4 km^2. 展开更多

In order to prevent and mitigate disasters,it is crucial to immediately and properly assess the spatial distribution of landslide hazards in the earthquake-affected area.Currently, there are primarily two categories of assessment techniques:the physical mechanism-based method(PMBM),which considers the landslide dynamics and has the advantages of effectiveness and proactivity;the environmental factor-based method(EFBM),which integrates the environmental conditions and has high accuracy. In order to obtain the spatial distribution of landslide hazards in the affected area with near realtime and high accuracy, this study proposed to combine the PMBM based on Newmark method with EFBM to form Newmark-Information value model(N-IV),Newmark-Logic regression model(N-LR)and Newmark-Support Vector Machine model(N-SVM)for seismic landslide hazard assessment on the Ludian Mw 6.2 earthquake in Yunnan. The predicted spatial hazard distribution was compared with the actual cataloged landslide inventory, and frequency ratio(FR),and area under the curve(AUC)metrics were used to verify the model's plausibility, performance, and accuracy.According to the findings, the model's accuracy is ranked as follows:N-SVM>N-LR>N-IV>Newmark.With an AUC value of 0.937,the linked N-SVM was discovered to have the best performance. The research results indicate that the physics-environmental coupled model(PECM)exhibits accuracy gains of 46.406%(N-SVM),30.625%(N-LR),and 22.816%(N-IV)when compared to the conventional Newmark technique. It shows varied degrees of improvement from 2.577%to 12.446%when compared to the single EFBM.The study also uses the Ms 6.8 Luding earthquake to evaluate the model, showcasing its trustworthy in forecasting power and steady generalization.Since the suggested PECM in this study can adapt to complicated earthquake-induced landslides situations,it aims to serve as a reference for future research in a similar field,as well as to help with emergency planning and response in earthquakeprone regions with landslides. 展开更多

An improved analytical method to determine the content of 52 major, minor and trace elements in marine geological samples, using a HF-HCl-HNO_3 acid system with a high-pressure closed digestion method(HPCD), is studied by an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry(ICP-OES) and an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS). The operating parameters of the instruments are optimized, and the optimal analytical parameters are determined. The influences of optical spectrum and mass spectrum interferences, digestion methods and acid systems on the analytical results are investigated. The optimal spectral lines and isotopes are chosen, and internal standard element of rhodium is selected to compensate for matrix effects and analytical signals drifting. Compared with the methods of an electric heating plate digestion and a microwave digestion, a high-pressure closed digestion method is optimized with less acid, complete digestion, less damage for digestion process. The marine geological samples are dissolved completely by a HF-HCl-HNO_3 system, the relative error(RE) for the analytical results are all less than 6.0%. The method detection limits are 2–40μg/g by the ICP-OES, and 6–80 ng/g by ICP-MS. The methods are used to determine the marine sediment reference materials(GBW07309, GBW07311, GBW07313), rock reference materials(GBW07103, GBW07104,GBW07105), and cobalt-rich crust reference materials(GBW07337, GBW07338, GBW07339), the obtained analytical results are in agreement with the certified values, and both of the relative standard deviation(RSD) and the relative error(RE) are less than 6.0%. The analytical method meets the requirements for determining 52 elements contents of bulk marine geological samples. 展开更多

Different criteria and factors are used in different methods of soft soil foundation settlement calculation and engineering geological zoning. The methods used are not universally suitable for complex geological environments. The post-construction settlement of soft soil foundations are especially large and difficult to calculate. In addition, there are many deficiencies in the current methods used for engineering geological zoning.Focusing on the need of establishing engineering geological zoning for areas with soft soil foundations in the Tianjin Marine Economic Area, combination weighting and extension methods were introduced. An evaluation model for the settlement of soft soil foundations was established using multiple factors and large amounts of data. This evaluation model is accurate and objective for delineating engineering geological zoning. These methods eliminate deficiencies by considering both objective and subjective factors, and help obtain an objective and accurate result. 展开更多

The future inundation by storm surge on coastal areas are currently ill-defined.With increasing global sealevel due to climate change, the coastal flooding by storm surge is more and more frequently, especially in coastal lowland with land subsidence. Therefore, the risk assessment of such inundation for these areas is of great significance for the sustainable socio-economic development. In this paper, the authors use Elevation-Area method and Regional Ocean Model System(ROMS)model to assess the risk of the inundation of Bohai Bay by storm surge. The simulation results of Elevation-Area method show that either a 50-year or 100-year storm surge can inundate coastal areas exceeding 8000 km^(2);the numerical simulation results based on hydrodynamics, considering ground friction and duration of the storm surge high water, show that a 50-year or 100-year storm surge can only inundate an area of over 2000 km^(2),which is far less than 8000 km^(2);while,when taking into account the land subsidence and sea level rise, the very inundation range will rapidly increase by 2050 and 2100.The storm surge will greatly impact the coastal area within about 10-30 km of the Bohai Bay,in where almost all major coastal projects are located. The prompt response to flood disaster due to storm surge is urgently needed, for which five suggestions have been proposed based on the geological background of Bohai Bay.This study may offer insight into the development of the response and adaptive plans for flooding disasters caused by storm surge. 展开更多

It is of crucial importance to investigate the spatial structures of ancient landslides in the eastern Tibetan Plateau’s alpine canyons as they could provide valuable insights into the evolutionary history of the landslides and indicate the potential for future reactivation. This study examines the Deda ancient landslide, situated in the Chalong-ranbu fault zone, where creep deformation suggests a complex underground structure.By integrating remote sensing, field surveys,Audio-frequency Magnetotellurics(AMT),and Microtremor Survey Method(MSM)techniques, along with engineering geological drilling for validation,to uncover the landslide’s spatial feature s.The research indicates that a fault is developed in the upper part of the Deda ancient landslide, and the gully divides it into Deda landslide accumulation zoneⅠand Deda landslide accumulation zoneⅡin space. The distinctive geological characteristics detectable by MSM in the shallow subsurface and by AMT in deeper layers. The findings include the identification of two sliding zones in the Deda I landslide, the shallow sliding zone(DD-I-S1)depth is approximately 20 m,and the deep sliding zone(DD-I-S2)depth is 36.2-49.9 m.The sliding zone(DD-Ⅱ-S1)depth of the DedaⅡlandslide is 37.6-43.1 m.A novel MSM-based method for sliding zone identification is proposed, achieving less than 5%discrepancy in depth determination when compared with drilling data. These results provide a valuable reference for the spatial structural analysis of large-deepseated landslides in geologically complex regions like the eastern Tibetan Plateau. 展开更多

The searching method of failure surface which consists of complex geological structures in high and steep rock slopes was studied. Based on computer simulation technology and Monte-Carlo method, three dimensional multi-scale geological structures such as engineering scale and statistical scale structures of the slope were simulated. The searching method of failure route which consists of joints and rock bridges was determined via simulation annealing method by considering the shear strength of joints or rock bridges in one supposed route. When shear strengths of all the supposed routes were computed, the least shear strength route was considered failure route. Then, the inclined slice of joint slices and rock bridge slices were separated according to the position of joints and rock bridges. For the rock bridge slices, by distinguishing the failure model, the force direction to the next slice was defined. Finally, the limit equilibrium equations for every slice were established, and the slope stability factor was obtained. One practical example indicates that the discussed method is more closely to the real condition. 展开更多

A new back-analysis method of ground stress is proposed with comprehensive consideration of influence of topography, geology and nonlinear physical mechanical properties of rock on ground stress. This method based on non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) technology provides the means to build a refined three-dimensional finite element model with more accurate meshing under complex terrain and geological conditions. Meanwhile, this method is a back-analysis of ground stress with combination of multivariable linear regression model and neural network (ANN) model. Firstly, the regression model is used to fit approximately boundary loads. Regarding the regressed loads as mean value, some sets of boundary loads with the same interval are constructed according to the principle of orthogonal design, to calculate the corresponding ground stress at the observation positions using finite element method. The results (boundary loads and the corresponding ground stress) are added to the samples for ANN training. And on this basis, an ANN model is established to implement higher precise back-analysis of initial ground stress. A practical application case shows that the relative error between the inversed ground stress and observed value is mostly less than 10 %, which can meet the need of engineering design and construction requirements. 展开更多

The construction of modern livable cities faces challenges in karst areas, including ground collapse and engineering problems.Wuhan, with a population of 13.74×10^(6) and approximately 1161 km^(2)of soluble rocks in the urban area of 8569.15 km^(2),predominantly consists of concealed karst areas where occasional ground collapse events occur, posing significant threats to underground engineering projects. To address these challenges,a comprehensive geological survey was conducted in Wuhan, focusing on major karstrelated issues.Geophysical methods offer advantages over drilling in detecting concealed karst areas due to their efficiency,non-destructiveness,and flexibility. This paper reviewed the karst geological characteristics in Wuhan and the geophysical exploration methods for karst, selected eight effective geophysical methods for field experimentation, evaluated their suitability, and proposed method combinations for different karst scenarios. The results show that different geophysical methods have varying applicability for karst detection in Wuhan, and combining multiple methods enhances detection effectiveness. The specific recommendations for method combinations provided in this study serve as a valuable reference for karst detection in Wuhan. 展开更多

The complicated geological conditions and geological hazards are challenging problems during tunnel construction, which will cause great losses of life and property. Therefore, reliable prediction of geological defective features, such as faults, karst caves and groundwater, has important practical significances and theoretical values. In this paper,we presented the criteria for detecting typical geological anomalies using the tunnel seismic prediction(TSP) method. The ground penetrating radar(GPR) signal response to water-bearing structures was used for theoretical derivations. And the 3D tomography of the transient electromagnetic method(TEM) was used to develop an equivalent conductance method.Based on the improvement of a single prediction technique,we developed a technical system for reliable prediction of geological defective features by analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of all prediction methods. The procedure of the application of this system was introduced in detail. For prediction, the selection of prediction methods is an important and challenging work. The analytic hierarchy process(AHP) was developed for prediction optimization. We applied the newly developed prediction system to several important projects in China, including Hurongxi highway,Jinping II hydropower station, and Kiaochow Bay subsea tunnel. The case studies show that the geological defective features can be successfully detected with good precision and efficiency, and the prediction system is proved to be an effective means to minimize the risks of geological hazards during tunnel construction. 展开更多

This paper focuses on the progress in geomechanical modeling associated with carbon dioxide(CO2)geological storage. The detailed review of some geomechanical aspects, including numerical methods, stress analysis, ground deformation, fault reactivation, induced seismicity and crack propagation,is presented. It is indicated that although all the processes involved are not fully understood, integration of all available data, such as ground survey, geological conditions, microseismicity and ground level deformation, has led to many new insights into the rock mechanical response to CO2injection.The review also shows that in geomechanical modeling, continuum modeling methods are predominant compared with discontinuum methods. It is recommended to develop continuum-discontinuum numerical methods since they are more convenient for geomechanical modeling of CO2geological storage, especially for fracture propagation simulation. The Mohr-Coulomb criterion is widely used in prediction of rock mass mechanical behavior. It would be better to use a criterion considering the effect of the intermediate principal stress on rock mechanical behavior, especially for the stability analysis of deeply seated rock engineering. Some challenges related to geomechanical modeling of CO2geological storage are also discussed. 展开更多

A novel optimization methodology for the disc cutter designs of tunnel boring machines (TBM) was presented. To fully understand the characteristics and performance of TBM cutters, a comprehensive list of performance parameters were investigated, including maximum equivalent stress and strain, specific energy and wear life which were closely related to the cutting forces and profile geometry of the cutter rings. A systematic method was employed to evaluate an overall performance index by incorporating objectives at all possible geological conditions. The Multi-objective & Multi-geologic Conditions Optimization (MMCO) program was then developed, which combined the updating of finite element model, system evaluation, finite element solving, post-processing and optimization algorithm. Finally, the MMCO was used to optimize the TBM cutters used in a TBM tunnel project in China. The results show that the optimization significantly improves the working performances of the cutters under all geological conditions considered. 展开更多

The gravity anomaly and vertical gravity gradient due to anomalous geological bodies are mainly computed by numerical methods,so it is difficult and time-consuming to use the gravity-geological method to invert seafloor topography. This paper addresses this issue by deriving an expression for gravity generated by a cylinder based on a series expansion. The choice of number for terms in the series is estimated by comparing with the numerical method, especially when the depth H=4000m,the accuracy of 1 mGal(1 Gal=10^(-2)m/s^(2))can be achieved when the series are 9.The expressions can be used to establish the relationships between the shape of an anomalous body and the generated vertical gravity and vertical gravity gradient, respectively. Finally, the potential applications of the expressions in inverting seafloor topography are illustrated by synthetic examples. 展开更多
