As the sole obligate symbiotic birds in Africa,oxpeckers offer a unique model for studying symbiotic relationships.Due to the multitrophic level they occupy and the context dependent foraging behavior they exhibit,the type of symbiotic relationship can be variable.In addition to providing a cleaning service to the host by removing ticks,oxpeckers frequently feed on blood,mucus,and saliva,inflicting potential damage on the host.Here,we used DNA metabarcoding on faecal samples to analyze the taxonomic composition of the trophic interactions of the Yellow-billed Oxpecker(Buphagus africanus)and Red-billed Oxpecker(B.erythrorhynchus)in northeastern Namibia.In contrast to conventional methods,DNA metabarcoding allows for a detailed identification of dietary resources encompassing both mammal hosts and consumed arthropods within the same samples.With this information,we examined differences in the diet composition between oxpecker species and localities,as well as the co-occurrence between host and arthropod species.Our findings revealed that oxpeckers predominantly source their diet from mammals,ticks,and flies;however,ticks and flies rarely co-occur in the diet of an individual.We observed variability among individuals in their feeding ecology,which is strongly correlated with locality and,to a lesser extent,with the mammal host.We noted a high degree of mobility between hosts within relatively short periods,with 32%of the samples showing traces of at least two mammal hosts.This study illustrates the dynamic foraging behavior of these specialized symbiotic birds,shedding light on their potential role in pest control services and disease transmission. 展开更多

This article reviews the psychological and neuroscience achievements in concept learning since 2010 from the perspectives of individual learning and social learning,and discusses several issues related to concept learning,including the assistance of machine learning about concept learning.In terms of individual learning,current evidence shows that the brain tends to process concrete concepts through typical features(shared features);and for abstract concepts,semantic processing is the most important cognitive way.In terms of social learning,interpersonal neural synchrony(INS)is considered the main indicator of efficient knowledge transfer(such as teaching activities between teachers and students),but this phenomenon only broadens the channels for concept sources and does not change the basic mode of individual concept learning.Ultimately,this article argues that the way the human brain processes concepts depends on the concept’s own characteristics,so there are no“better”strategies in teaching,only more“suitable”strategies. 展开更多

Groundwater,as a critical component of the hydrological cycle,is essential for sustainable ecosystem development.To clarify the current status of domestic and overseas research,and to identify hotspots,frontier and future trends of groundwater and ecology research,this study utilizes bibliometric methods and CiteSpace software to examine relevant published articles in the Web of Science(WOS)and CNKI databases from 1978 to 2022.Specifically,this study analyzes(1)the annual number of published papers;(2)research institutions;(3)keywords;and(4)evolution of research hotspots.The findings reveal that the United States,China,and Germany are the top three countries in groundwater and ecology research.International research hotspots mainly focus on microbial ecology,climate change,groundwater-surface water interactions in the hyporheic zone,biodiversity,and submarine groundwater discharge,while domestic research hotspots mainly focus on ecological water conveyance,ecological flow,groundwater development and utilization,groundwater pollution,and groundwater and ecological protection.Both domestic and international research hotspots exhibit interdisciplinary features with diverse research objects and assessment methods.Future research in this area is expected to focus on topics such as contamination,groundwater quality,framework,mechanism,spatial distribution,and dissolved organic matter.Additionally,the study of ecological recharge,ecological flow,ecological protection,water intake and use will continue to be the hot topics domestically. 展开更多

A long way to go:impacts of urbanization on migrants’livelihoods and rural ecology in less industrialized regions

Urbanization,often coupled with industrialization,is generally considered as a boost for improving livelihood as well as alleviating ecological pressures of the rural areas.However,this experience needs to be tested in less industrialized areas,particularly where the urbanization is driven by non-economic factors such as urban public services and relevant government policies rather than employment opportunities.Taking two villages on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau as examples,through the field investigation by using semi-structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews,and statistical data analysis,we explored the impacts of urbanization on migrants’livelihoods and the ecological conditions of their original village rangeland.We found that the disposable income and savings of emigrant households were less than the stay households,which might be correlated to the limited employment due to the lagged industrialization in the local township,and the mismatch between their traditional labor skills and the demands of urban services.Their home-village rangeland overuse was not alleviated since the increasing grazing pressure caused by the stay households,though the emigrant households intended to decrease the number of livestock on their home pasture.We concluded that the urbanization misaligned with local industrialization may fail to improve migrant livelihoods and local ecological conditions in less industrialized areas.Our research supplements the previous urbanization theory by highlighting the non-industrialization driven urbanization,and is particularly pertinent for the transitional countries worldwide. 展开更多

More diverse data on animal ecology are now available.This“data deluge”presents challenges for both biologists and computer scientists;however,it also creates opportunities to improve analysis and answer more holistic research questions.We aim to increase awareness of the current opportunity for interdisciplinary research between animal ecology researchers and computer scientists.Immersive analytics(IA)is an emerging research field in which investigations are performed into how immersive technologies,such as large display walls and virtual reality and augmented reality devices,can be used to improve data analysis,outcomes,and communication.These investigations have the potential to reduce the analysis effort and widen the range of questions that can be addressed.We propose that biologists and computer scientists combine their efforts to lay the foundation for IA in animal ecology research.We discuss the potential and the challenges and outline a path toward a structured approach.We imagine that a joint effort would combine the strengths and expertise of both communities,leading to a well-defined research agenda and design space,practical guidelines,robust and reusable software frameworks,reduced analysis effort,and better comparability of results. 展开更多

Our reconstructions of folk concepts are often influenced by the metaphysical and epistemological doctrines we are committed to.Surprisingly enough,this influence is rarely recognized in definitional debates and has been mostly overlooked in the literature on philosophical definitions.It is frequent for philosophers to act as if only evidential support(for example,our intuitions across real and hypothetical cases)should be considered when choosing between competing reconstructions.This programmatic paper analyzes the interplay between philosophical commitments and evidence in the reconstruction of folk concepts.It also clarifies the precise manner in which metaphysical and epistemological doctrines influence philosophical definitions,why the incidence of metaphysical and epistemological doctrines is rarely recognized,and why theoretically motivated definitions should not be assimilated to the two major forms of definitions recognized in the relevant literature(descriptive and revisionary). 展开更多

Ontologies have been used for several years in life sciences to formally represent concepts and reason about knowledge bases in domains such as the semantic web, information retrieval and artificial intelligence. The exploration of these domains for the correspondence of semantic content requires calculation of the measure of semantic similarity between concepts. Semantic similarity is a measure on a set of documents, based on the similarity of their meanings, which refers to the similarity between two concepts belonging to one or more ontologies. The similarity between concepts is also a quantitative measure of information, calculated based on the properties of concepts and their relationships. This study proposes a method for finding similarity between concepts in two different ontologies based on feature, information content and structure. More specifically, this means proposing a hybrid method using two existing measures to find the similarity between two concepts from different ontologies based on information content and the set of common superconcepts, which represents the set of common parent concepts. We simulated our method on datasets. The results show that our measure provides similarity values that are better than those reported in the literature. 展开更多

敏感生态流量目标的合理制定是生态流量管理的重难点问题。针对目前敏感生态流量目标制定中存在的计算方法繁杂、关键参数缺乏等问题,本文以鱼类产卵期为重点,提出了分区分类河流敏感期生态流速和生态流量核算方法,制定了不同区域(东北... 敏感生态流量目标的合理制定是生态流量管理的重难点问题。针对目前敏感生态流量目标制定中存在的计算方法繁杂、关键参数缺乏等问题,本文以鱼类产卵期为重点,提出了分区分类河流敏感期生态流速和生态流量核算方法,制定了不同区域(东北、黄淮海、西南、长江中下游和东南沿海)、不同类型(按集水面积、山区河段和平原河段等划分)河流敏感期生态流速阈值。结果显示,全部分区分类推荐流速平均值为0.66 m/s,其中山区大站平均值为0.94 m/s、山区小站平均值为0.62 m/s、平原大站平均值为0.63 m/s、平原小站平均值为0.46 m/s。基于阈值核算了全国217个鱼类产卵生境保护河段的敏感期生态流量目标,并结合部分断面湿周法结果对阈值合理性与适应性进行了验证,验证结果表明相关阈值和方法适应于不同类型、不同规模河流,可为我国现阶段河流敏感生态流量管控提供参考。 展开更多

生态补偿机制是打破黄河流域零散化环境保护,应对流域生态环境变化,推动流域高质量发展的重要制度创新。该研究在共享视角下,利用微分博弈模型和最优控制理论,结合黄河流域生态保护具体情况与出台的相关支持政策,引入径流增加量和泥沙... 生态补偿机制是打破黄河流域零散化环境保护,应对流域生态环境变化,推动流域高质量发展的重要制度创新。该研究在共享视角下,利用微分博弈模型和最优控制理论,结合黄河流域生态保护具体情况与出台的相关支持政策,引入径流增加量和泥沙治理量两个环境保护衡量指标构建了黄河流域综合生态补偿机制的博弈模型,探讨在完全共享生态补偿机制、不完全共享无横向生态补偿机制以及不完全共享有横向生态补偿机制3类情形下的最优策略,并针对共享效益系数、生态补偿系数等展开了参数影响分析。结果显示:①完全共享生态补偿机制以及不完全共享有横向生态补偿机制均可以提高政府对生态保护的投入,完全共享生态补偿机制是最优机制,不完全共享有横向生态补偿机制更具有实践性和操作性。②区域政府的生态保护投入、环境改善效果以及流域整体的经济利益与生态保护成本系数负相关,与生态保护效果系数正相关,共享效益系数是各区域政府关于环境保护与经济发展博弈后的结果,实现合理的共享效益系数有利于加强长期跨界合作关系的稳定。③在预期收益对生态环境更加敏感的区域,开展综合生态补偿机制有利于形成生态环境改善与预期收益增加相互促进的良性循环。最后通过实证分析验证了结论的有效性,并从发挥中央政府统筹作用、健全流域信息共享机制以及均衡生态保护与经济发展关系3个方面为构建黄河流域综合生态补偿机制提出了对策建议,进一步推动了黄河流域的协同治理,完善了黄河流域生态补偿制度。 展开更多
