These structures are likely to be affected in Chiari malformation. Therefore, SEP abnormalities may provide valuable information in patients with CM. However, the consistency of SEP abnormality or normality with the damage is a matter of research. Knowing whether median nerve somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) is useful in revealing subclinical damage in patients with Chiari malformation is important in the treatment and follow-up plan of the disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between median nerve SEP values and the severity of cerebellar ectopia in patients with Chiari type 1 malformation. Median nerve SEP values were obtained from 30 healthy individuals and 146 individuals with Chiari malformation. The cerebellar ectopia degree and McRae line length were measured. SEP values were not significantly different between groups. The McRae line was found to be significantly shorter in the control group than in the Chiari malformation group (p = 0.031). There was no correlation between the degree of cerebellar ectopia and the length of the McRae line (r = 0.002, p = 0.979). Neither cerebellar ectopy degree nor McRae line length had a relationship with SEP values (r = -0.153, p = 0.066;r = -0.056, p = 0.500, respectively). There was no difference in cerebellar ectopy degree or SEP values between the groups with cerebellar ectopy with and without a syrinx (p = 0.899;p = 0.080, respectively). Likewise, McRae line length was not found to be related to the presence of a syrinx (p = 0.139). Median nerve SEP examination was not beneficial for diagnosing asymptomatic-oligosymptomatic Chiari malformation as a subclinical injury, whether accompanied by syringomyelia or not.展开更多

However, there is a paucity of information regarding the dynamic observation of SEP and MEP following cerebral ischemic injury. OBJECTIVE: To explore SEP and MEP changes following acute ischemic stroke, and investigate the role of evoked potentials in monitoring brain function in stroke. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: A randomized, controlled, animal experiment was performed at the Chongqing Key Laboratory of Neurology, Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University from September 2007 to August 2008. MATERIALS: Hydrogen blood flow detector was purchased from Soochow University Medical Instrument Co., China, and Power lab system was purchased from AD Instruments, Inc., USA. METHODS: A total of 36 healthy, adult, male, Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned to four groups (n = 9), including three ischemia groups (12, 24 and 72 hours of ischemia) and a sham-surgery group. The rat model of acute ischemic stroke was established by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in the left hemisphere. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: SEP and MEP of the left limbs were detected, and cerebral blood flow was measured by the hydrogen cleaning method. RESULTS: The latency of positive wave 1 (P1), negative wave 1 (N1) and positive wave 2 (P2) waves in SEP, and latency of negative wave 1, 2 (N1, N2) waves in MEP were significantly prolonged with increasing ischemic duration following MCAO (P < 0.01), but cerebral blood flow was significantly decreased (P < 0.05, or P < 0.01). CONLUSION: Ischemic stroke prolongs the latency of SEP waves (P1, N1, P2) and MEP waves (N1, N2), and cerebral cortical evoked potential may correlate with cerebral blood flow changes. This indicates that SEP and MEP can be used to evaluate brain function following acute ischemic stroke.展开更多

Diabetes was induced by single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin(50 mg/kg). Sodium tungstate [40 mg/(kg·d)]was administered for 12 wk and then VEPs were recorded.Additionally, thiobarbituric acid reactive substance(TBARS) levels were measured in brain tissues.·RESULTS: The latencies of P1, N1, P2, N2 and P3 waves were significantly prolonged in diabetic rats compared with control group. Diabetes mellitus caused an increase in the lipid peroxidation process that was accompanied by changes in VEPs. However, prolonged latencies of VEPs for all components returned to control levels in sodium tungstate-treated group. The treatment of sodium tungstate significantly decreased brain TBARS levels and depleted the prolonged latencies of VEP components compared with diabetic control group.· CONCLUSION: Sodium tungstate shows protective effects on visual pathway in diabetic rats, and it can be worthy of further study for potential use.展开更多

However, the effects of ligustrazine on SEP is still not clear. OBJECTIVE: To study the protective effects of ligustrazini injection on cerebral ischemiareperfusion injury. DESIGN: Auto-control study, random grouping. SETTING: Qilu Hospital of Shandong University. MATERIALS: The experiment was completed in the Cerebral Functional Room of Qilu Hospital Affiliated to Shandong University from March 2002 to June 2004. A totally of 24 healthy Harbin rabbits were randomly divided into blank control group (n=8), model control group (n=8) and ligustrazine treatment group (n=8). Hydrochloric ligustrazine injection, 40 mg/2 mL each ampoule, was provided by the Third Pharmaceutical Factory of Beijing (certification: 93035236273). The main component was hydrochloric ligustrazine and the chemical name was 2, 3, 5, 6-tetramethyl pyrazine hydrochloride. METHODS: ① Modeling method: The bilateral common carotid artery ligation was adopted to make the model. ② Index of cerebral functional lesion evaluated with SEP during ischemia-reperfusion: DISA 2000C neuromyoeletrometer provided by Dantec Electronics Ltd, Denmark was used to detect SEP. ③ Interventional process: Blank control group: The latencies and amplitudes of SEP were measured before injection with 1.5 mg/kg ligustrazine and at the points of 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes and 120 minutes after injection. Ligustrazine treatment group: Rabbits were injected with 1.5 mg/kg ligustrazine, and those of model control group were injected the same volume of saline. Thirty minutes later, the bilateral common carotid artery of the rabbits all had been ligated for 30 minutes, and then reperfused for 120 minutes. The latencies and amplitudes of SEP were measured before injection, before ligation, at the points of 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 25 minutes and 30 minutes after ligation, and at the points of 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes and 120 minutes after reperfusion. ④ Evaluating criteria: Normal values of P-wave latencies and amplitudes were (19.34±3.18) ms and (4.55±1.43) μV. Average value before injection in blank control group and average values before injection, after injection and before ligation in ischemia-reperfusion group were regarded as control criteria to evaluate changes of Pwave latencies and amplitudes after experiment. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: P-wave latencies and amplitudes of SEP in the three groups. RESULTS: A total of 24 rabbits were involved in the final analysis without any loss. ① Blank control group: The P-wave latencies delayed markedly at each time point after injection. Compared with that before injection, there was a significant difference (P < 0.05-0.01). The P-wave amplitudes did not fluctuate noticeably all the time after injection, but significantly decreased when compared with those before injection (P < 0.05-0.01). ② Ischemia-reperfusion group: The P-wave latencies delayed and amplitudes decreased in the rabbits with cerebral ischemiareperfusion at all points of time during cerebral ischemia-reperfusion, and there was significant difference when compared with the levels before ischemia (P < 0.05). When ligustrazine was injected, the latencies and amplitudes changed less, and as compared with the levels before ischemia, the difference was not significant (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: ① Ligustrazine can inhibit P-wave latencies and amplitudes of SEP of normal rabbits. ② Ligustrazine can improve P-wave latencies and amplitudes of SEP of rabbits with cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury.展开更多

A total of 55 children were included in the study (34 Female), with an age range of 0 to 291 weeks. The VA was measured by the sweep visual evoked potential technique. Of those with a PVS, in 31 the ventricular valve was inserted before 15 days after the diagnosis whereas in 14 the ventricular valve was inserted after 15 days. The sweep VEP was performed in all children, 95 exams (94%) were abnormal and only 6 were normal. There was a statistical difference in the VA between children with a PVS inserted before 15 days of the diagnosis and children with a PVS after 15 days (p = 0.038) or those without a shunt (p = 0.031). Children with no complications of the PVS had a better VA as compared to those with shunt complications (p < 0.001). In the group of children with complications, again those who had a shunt inserted be-fore 15 days had better VA results in com- parison to those in whom the shunt was inserted after 15 days (p = 0.029). No statistical difference in the VA was found between children without the PVS and with those in which the shunt was inserted after 15 days of the di-agnosis of hydrocephalus (p = 0.699). We conclude that the delayed insertion of the PVS may compromise the visual development of these children.展开更多

The features of flash VEP (F-VEP) are to be observed. OBJECTIVE: To observe and compare the differences of F-VEP latencies and wave amplitudes between eyes in rabbits, and investigate the correlation with sex and the side of eyes. DESIGN: A comparative animal experiment. SETTING: Department of Neurosurgery, General Hospital of Chinese PLA. MATERIALS: The experiment was carried out in the neurophysiological laboratory of the Institute of Neurosciences, General Hospital of Chinese PLA from September 2004 to February 2005. Thirty big-ear rabbits of clean degree, 15 males and 15 females, weighing 2.0-2.5 kg, were provided by the animal center of the General Hospital of Chinese PLA. METHODS: Viking-IV perioperative monitor and flash stimulator for special use were applied. The rabbits were anesthetized with intramuscular injection of compound ketamine. The recording electrode was placed at 3 mm anterior to exoccipital tuberosity (onion, Oz), and the reference electrode was placed at the ear edge of the same side. The stimulative frequency was 1.9 Hz, and the amplifier was 50 μV; The range of wave filter was 5 Hz for high pass and 100 Hz for low pass; The average overlapping was 200 times, and the analytical time was 250 ms. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Comparison of F-VEP wave forms; F-VEP latencies and wave amplitudes. RESULTS: All the 30 rabbits were involved in the analysis of results. ① Comparison of F-VEP wave forms in rabbits: The F-VEP waves mainly manifested as positive-negative-positive (PNP). The F-VEP manifestations to light stimulations were extremely similar between left and right eyes, and the wave amplitudes of both eyes were obviously increased. ② Determinations of F-VEP latencies and wave amplitudes: There were no significant differences in the latencies and wave amplitudes of F-VEP between the two groups (P > 0.05), the latencies of P1, N1 and P2 waves of left eye were (32.59±2.01), (43.85±4.35) and (66.20±8.13) ms, respectively, and the wave amplitudes of P1, N1 and P2 waves of left eye were (16.45±10.22), (7.93±3.56) and (17.62±8.18) μV. F-VEP latencies were stable with small changes, whereas amplitudes had greater changes. CONCLUSION: ① The latency and wave amplitudes F-VEP were stable with good repetition. ② The latencies and wave amplitudes had no significant differences between males and females, as well as between left and right eyes. Further investigation should be undertaken on the animal and clinical field.展开更多

Evoked potentials provide objective, non-invasive electrophysiological measures of neural sensory processing that could be useful for clinical and investigative studies of individuals with low-functioning autism who are unable to perform behavioral testing. Despite increased use, the reliability of sensory evoked potentials has not been established for individuals with low-functioning autism. Establishing reliability is important for validating the utility of sensory evoked potentials. In this study, we explored the feasibility of assessing the test-retest reliability of sensory evoked potentials using repeat recordings, acquired over 2.5- and 6-month intervals, from a minimally verbal adult with low-functioning autism. Repeat auditory and visual evoked potential recordings showed high test-retest reliability, with cross-correlation coefficients ≥ 0.80. This case demonstrates the feasibility of establishing test-retest reliability for individuals with low-functioning autism and supports the utility of sensory evoked potentials in clinical and investigative ASD studies.展开更多

OBJECTIVE: To observe the changes of evoked potential in hippocampus and the significance after electrostimulation at medial mamillary nucleus. DESIGN: An observational control experiment. SETTING: Department of Physiology, Shenyang Medical College. MATERIALS: Twenty-three male or female Wistar rats, 3-4 months old, weighing 270-350 g, were provided by bhe animal room of Shenyang Medical College [the license number was scxk(Liao)2003-0016]. METHODS: The Wistar rats were anaesthetized by intraperintoneal injection of 20% urethane (1 g/kg), tracheal intubation was also given. The self-made double-pole metal stimulating electrode with the point diameter of 1 mm was inserted into medial mamillary nucleus, the wanted hippocampal guidance spot was found within the rang of the hippocampal region at the same side of tee mamillary body range (CA1-CA4), inserted with same-core guidance electrode, a sole square-wave stimulation of wave wide 0.2 ms stimulated with electrodes at the applied intensity of 7-9 V, the evoked potential was induced through guidance electrodes, and then input to the ATAC-350 data-processing machine for memory showing wave processing, the memory recorded wave recording graph was separately drawn up by the X-Y recording instrument to observe the latency, time procedure and amplitude of the evoked potential in each hippocampal region of the rats and calculate the percentage of the evoked potential in each hippocampal region. Totally 78 guidance spots in hippocampus were recorded, including 30 positive reaction spots and 48 negative ones. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: ① Latency, time procedure and amplitude of the evoked potentials in each hippocampal region of rats; ② percentage of the evoked potentials in each hippocampal region; ③ the wave shapes of the evoked potentials in each hippocampal region from different arrangement in the same positive reaction spot. RESULTS: ① Of the 30 recorded positive reactions, 9 positive spots fused into the stimulated false marks because of the short latency. The analysis of variance showed that the latency had significant difference (P < 0.05), time procedure had highly significant difference (P < 0.01), but there was no significant difference in the amplitude (P > 0.05) among the hippampal regions. ② Among the 30 positive spots, the percentage of evoked potential in the hippocampal regions were 34.5% for CA1, 2.0% for CA2, 24.1% for CA3 and 22.4% for CA4. ③ In different levels of the same positive spot, different changes of the evoked potential wave shapes could be observed, and the most obvious change was that of positive wave amplitude. At different positive spots, evoked potentials of positive phase, negative and the double-phase could be observed. CONCLUSION: There are nerve associations between mamillary body and hippocampus, afferent fibers of mamillary body come from hippocampal CA1 region are a little more.展开更多

The effect of surgery on the beast sensibility is one of the greatest concerns after reconstructive reductive breast surgery through its affect on patient’s social life and psychological health. The dermatomal somatosensory evoked potential (D-SEP) is a new method to quantitatively evaluate breast sensibility. Patients and Methods: Twenty-five women enrolled in this study presenting with breast enlargement, underwent mammary reduction by using the inferior pyramidal breast reduction technique using the same operative technique described by Robbins with some modifications. All D-SEP amplitudes and latencies were calculated preoperatively and then were reassessed six and twelve months post-surgery in each breast. Result: The results revealed that there is a significant difference in the D-SEP latency pre- and post-operatively. The statistically significant decrease in latency and the breast size demonstrated indicates that the sensibility improved after breast reduction surgery both at six and twelve months. There is also a significant increase in the D-SEP amplitude pre- and post-operatively. The negative and statistically significant increase in amplitude with the decrease in breast size demonstrated indicates that the sensibility improved after breast reduction surgery both at six and twelve months. Conclusion: This study concluded that breast sensibility will improve after breast reduction as indicated by significant reduction of D-SEP latencies and increase of its amplitudes. Our results confirm an inverse relationship between breast size and sensibility, with improvement in sensibility after breast reduction.展开更多

New activity in response to voluntary effort has been documented by electromyography (EMG), but the emergence of motor evoked potential (MEP) reflecting electrophysiological conductivity in the central nervous system, including the corticospinal pathway, after OMA, and the best indications for OMA, have not been clarified. Here, we report the emergence of MEPs after OMA and offer recom-mendations for appropriate indications based on the presence of involuntary muscle spasm (IMS). We used analysis of MEP to examine the efficacy of OMA for patients with complete paraplegia due to chronic spinal cord injury. To clarify the indications for OMA, we investigated the association of IMS and efficacy of OMA. Methods: Four patients, 3 men and 1 woman, were enrolled. The mean age of the cases was 30.3 ± 9.5 years (range, 19 to 40 years). All 4 cases were American Spinal Injury Association (ASISA) grade A. The mean duration from injury to OMA was 95.8 ± 68.2 months (range, 17 to 300 months). Samples of olfactory mucosa were removed, cut into smaller pieces, and grafted into the sites of spinal cord lesions after laminectomy. Postoperative subcutaneous fluid collection, postoperative meningitis, postoperative nosebleed, postoperative infection in the nasal cavity, impaired olfaction, neoplastic tissue overgrowth at the autograft site, new sensory disturbance, and involuntary muscle spasm were investigated as safety issues. Improvements in ASIA grade, variations in ASIA scores, EMG, SSEP, and improved urological function were evaluated as efficacy indicators. Results: There were no serious adverse events in this series. In 2 of the 4 cases, an improvement in motor function below the level of injury was recognized. In one, the motor score was 50 until 16 weeks after surgery, and it increased to 52 from 20 weeks after surgery. In the other, the motor score was 50 until 20 weeks after surgery, and it increased to 52 at 24 weeks after surgery with a further increase to 54 at 48 weeks after surgery. The emergence of MEP was recognized in the latter case at 96 weeks after surgery. The other 2 cases had no improvement in ASIA motor score. Both of these cases who showed improvements in the ASIA motor scores exhibited relative IMS compared with those who had no ASIA motor score recovery. Conclusions: We recognized the emergence of MEPs in a case with complete paraplegia due to chronic spinal cord injury after OMA. IMS might be a candidate of indication of OMA.展开更多

Methods Based on the successful establishment of animal models for acute bilirubin encephalopathy by intraperitoneal infusion of bilirubin with a dosage of 100~200μg/g body weight to 1-week-old guinea pigs, the F-VEP was recorded in animal models and human neonates with hyperbilirubinemia, and the sensitivity and reliability of F-VEP in detecting bilirubin neurotoxicity were evaluated. Results F-VEP features and its P1 latency significantly correlated to brain adenosine triphosphate (ATP) level, neurobeha-vioral and neuropathological changes in experimental bilirubin encephalopathy; neonates with hyperbiliru-binemia showed significant F-VEP changes characterized by absence of P1 or P1 latency prolonged in 1~7-day-old newborns, especially when the jaundice was caused by immun oincompatibility and infectious diseases. Conclusion F-VEP would be a good discriminator for bilirubin neurotoxicity, and can become a promising technique in monitoring bilirubin encephalopathy.展开更多

The article also reviews the contemporary researches involving the clinical applications of the mVEMP. Conclusions: Masseter VEMP is an evolving yet clinically promising neuro-otology test tool that has recently gained more research interest and is considered an additional tool to diagnose various vestibular disorders. Masseter VEMP assesses the functional integrity of the acoustic-masseteric and vestibulo-masseteric reflex pathways. The mVEMP could be used as a complementary test to evaluate the same peripheral generator as the cervical VEMP but a different central pathway i.e., vestibulo-trigeminal pathway. Various research studies that have experimented on parameters such as the effect of different electrode montages(zygomatic vs mandibular configurations), stimulation rates, filter settings and stimuli used to evoke mVEMP have been discussed in this article that could assist in the optimization of a comprehensive clinical protocol. The latency and the amplitude of mVEMP waveforms serve as significant parameters in differentiating normals from those of the clinical populations. Along with the cVEMPs and oVEMPs, mVEMP might help diagnose brainstem lesions in REM Sleep behaviour disorders, Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. However, further studies are required to probe in this area of research.展开更多

Patients in the EA group were treated with EA. Patients in the PI group were treated with cognition and behavior therapy. Patients in the EA plus PI group were treated with electro-acupuncture plus psychological intervention. Scores of IAD, scores of the symptom checklist90(SCL-90), latency and amplitude of P50 of AEP were measured before and after treatment.RESULTS: The scores of IAD after treatment significantly decreased in all groups(P < 0.05), and thescores of IAD in the EA plus PI group were significantly lower than those in the other two groups(P < 0.05). The scores of SCL-90 assembled and each factor after treatment in the EA plus PI group significantly decreased(P < 0.05). After treatment in the EA plus PI group, the amplitude distance of S1P50 and S2P50(S1-S2) significantly increased(P < 0.05).CONCLUSION: EA combined with PI could relieve the mental symptoms of IAD patients, and the mechanism is possibly related to the increase of cerebrum sense perception gating function.展开更多
文摘Abnormal SEP reflects dysfunction of the medial lemniscus and posterior cervical cord. Median nerve SEP examination was not beneficial for diagnosing asymptomatic-oligosymptomatic Chiari malformation as a subclinical injury, whether accompanied by syringomyelia or not.

文摘The spinal cord is at risk of injury during spinal surgery. If intraoperative spinal co rd injury is identified early, irreve rsible impairment or loss of neurological function can be prevented.Different types of spinal cord injury result in damage to diffe rent spinal cord regions, which may cause diffe rent somatosensory and motor evoked potential signal res ponses. In this study,we examined electrophysiological and histopathological changes between contusion, distra ction, and dislocation spinal cord injuries in a rat model. We found that contusion led to the most severe dorsal white matter injury and caused considerable attenuation of both somatosensory and motor evoked potentials.Dislocation resulted in loss of myelinated axons in the lateral region of the injured spinal cord along the rostrocaudal axis. The amplitude of attenuation in motor evoked potential responses caused by dislocation was greater than that caused by contusion. After distraction injury, extracellular spaces were slightly but not significantly enlarged;somatosensory evoked potential res ponses slightly decreased and motor evoked potential responses were lost.Correlation analysis showed that histological and electrophysiological findings we re significantly correlated and related to injury type.Intraope rative monitoring of both somatosensory and motor evoked potentials has the potential to identify iatrogenic spinal cord injury type during surgery.

文摘Objective:To analyze the correlation between the amplitude changes of motor evoked potential(MEP),the 3D volume changes of spinal canal measuring by postoperative CT and the improvement rate of clinical symptoms after the spinal canal decompression in minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion(MIS-TLIF),and to explore the predictive value of the changes of both MEP amplitude and spinal canal volume in the assessment of long-term clinical prognosis in MIS-TLIF.Methods:A retrospective study of 68 patients with L4/5 spinal stenosis treated with MIS-TLIF was performed. The changes of both intraoperative MEP amplitude and 3D spinal canal volume during the spinal canal decompression,as well as the visual analogue scale(VAS)and Oswestry dysfunction index(ODI)scores in the long-term follow-up were all recorded. Results:The values of intraoperative MEP amplitude was 159.04%higher in 68 patients with MIS-TLIF after spinal canal decompression(P<0.01).The 3 postoperative 3D spinal canal volume(4.89±1.27)cm increased by 31.22%in comparison 3 with preoperative date(3.78±1.08)cm(P<0.01).The VAS and ODI scores were improved to 78.55%and 80.60%,respectively at the last follow-up(P<0.01).The improvement rate of MEP amplitude on the decompression side was positively correlated with the improvement rate of postoperative spinal canal volume(r=0.272,P=0.025).The improvement rate of postoperative spinal canal volume was positively correlated with the improvement rate of VAS and ODI at the last follow-up(r=0.656,r=0.490,P<0.01).Moreover,the improvement rate of MEP amplitude on the decompression side was also positively correlated with the improvement rate of VAS and ODI at the last follow-up(r=0.322 and 0.235,respectively,P<0.05).Conclusion:The increase of MEP amplitude after spinal canal decompression in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis treated by MIS-TLIF was closely correlated with both of the increase of spinal canal volume and the improvement of clinical symptoms. Therefore,MEP amplitude monitoring was not only the one of the important monitoring methods for predicting the prognosis of MIS-TLIF but also the reliably predictive value in the long-term clinical prognosis in MIS-TLIF.

文摘BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that latency changes of some elements in a somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) and motor evoked potential (MEP) can reflect electrical activity of cerebral cortical neurons and conduction of white matter nerve fibers. This indicates that SEP and MEP can be used to evaluate brain function following acute ischemic stroke.
文摘AIM:To explore the diagnostic performance of isolatedcheck visual evoked potential(ic VEP)for primary open angle glaucoma(POAG)in both highly myopic and nonhighly myopic populations and compare it with those of optical coherence tomography(OCT)and Heidelberg retinal tomography(HRT)parameters.METHODS:A total of 126 participants were recruited, including 31 highly myopic participants with POAG(HM-POAG),36 non-highly myopic participants with POAG(NHM-POAG),25 highly myopic participants without POAG(HM)and 34 controls without high myopia(Normal). All the participants underwent a complete ophthalmic examination. The signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)was used to assess the ic VEP.Both qualitative and quantitative diagnostic performances of OCT,HRT and the ic VEP were analyzed and compared.RESULTS:Based on the criterion of SNR≤1,the diagnostic performance of the ic VEP in highly myopic subjects[area under the receiver operating characteristic curve(AUC)=0.862]was better than that in non-highly myopic subjects(AUC=0.789),and the SNR had fairly good specificity. In distinguishing the HM-POAG and HM groups, the AUC of the SNR was not different from those of the OCT and HRT parameters(P>0.05)in either the qualitative or quantitative comparison. In the qualitative analysis, the ic VEP showed good consistency with damage to the central 10°of the visual field(kappa=0.695-0.747,P<0.001).CONCLUSION:The ic VEP has the potential to discriminate individuals with and without POAG,especially in populations with high myopia.

文摘AIM: To evaluate the effect of sodium tungstate on visual evoked potentials(VEPs) in diabetic rats.· METHODS: Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups as normal control, diabetic control and diabetic rats treated with sodium tungstate. The treatment of sodium tungstate significantly decreased brain TBARS levels and depleted the prolonged latencies of VEP components compared with diabetic control group.· CONCLUSION: Sodium tungstate shows protective effects on visual pathway in diabetic rats, and it can be worthy of further study for potential use.

文摘BACKGROUND: Somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) has become a method with higher sensitivity and specificity than electroencephalogram in detecting the brain function and the region, range and degree of ischemia. ② Ligustrazine can improve P-wave latencies and amplitudes of SEP of rabbits with cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury.

文摘The objective was to measure the visual acuity (VA) of children with the diagnosis of hydrocephalus with or without peritoneal-ventricular shunt (PVS). We conclude that the delayed insertion of the PVS may compromise the visual development of these children.

文摘Somatosensory evoked potentials(SEPs)have been widely used to assess neurological function in clinical practice.A good understanding of the association between SEP signals and neurological function is helpful for precise diagnosis of impairment location.Previous studies on SEPs have been reported in animal models. However, few studies have reported the relationships between SEP waveforms in animals and those in humans. In this study,we collected normal SEP waveforms and decomposed them into specific time–frequency components(TFCs).Our results showed three stable TFC distribution regions in intact goats and rats and in humans. After we induced spinal cord injury in the animal models,a greater number of small TFC distribution regions were observed in the injured goat and rat groups than in the normal group. Moreover, there were significant correlations(P<0.05)and linear relationships between the main SEP TFCs of the human group and those of the goat and rat groups.A stable TFC distribution of SEP components was observed in the human, goat and rat groups, and the TFC distribution modes were similar between the three groups. Results in various animal models in this study could be translated to future clinical studies based on SEP TFC analysis.Human studies were approved by the Institutional Review Board of the University of Hong Kong/Hospital Authority Hong Kong West Cluster(approval No.UM 05-312 T/975)on December 5,2005.Rat experiments were approved by the Committee on the Use of Live Animals in Teaching and Research of Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong(approval No.CULART 2912-12)on January 28,2013.Goat experiments were approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical University(approval No.GDY2002132)on March 5,2018.
文摘BACKGROUND: The wave form, latency and wave amplitude of visual evoked potentials (VEP) are obviously affected by the stimulative parameters, physiological status of the subjects and anesthetics, thus there are greater normal variations and individual differences. Further investigation should be undertaken on the animal and clinical field.

文摘Brain oscillations are vital to cognitive functions, while disrupted oscillatory activity is linked to various brain disorders.Although high-frequency neural oscillations(>1 Hz)have been extensively studied in cognition, the neural mechanisms underlying low-frequency hemodynamic oscillations(LFHO)<1 Hz have not yet been fully explored. One way to examine oscillatory neural dynamics is to use a facial expression(FE)paradigm to induce steady-state visual evoked potentials(SSVEPs),which has been used in electroencephalography studies of high-frequency brain oscillation activity. In this study,LFHO during SSVEP-inducing periodic flickering stimuli presentation were inspected using functional near-infrared spectroscopy(fNIRS),in which hemodynamic responses in the prefrontal cortex were recorded while participants were passively viewing dynamic FEs flickering at 0.2 Hz.The fast Fourier analysis results demonstrated that the power exhibited monochronic peaks at 0.2 Hz across all channels, indicating that the periodic events successfully elicited LFHO in the prefrontal cortex.More importantly, measurement of LFHO can effectively distinguish the brain activation difference between different cognitive conditions, with happy FE presentation showing greater LFHO power than neutral FE presentation. These results demonstrate that stimuli flashing at a given frequency can induce LFHO in the prefrontal cortex, which provides new insights into the cognitive mechanisms involved in slow oscillation.

文摘Objective:To investigate the effect of Wei’s triple nine needling therapy on the N2-P2 wave of the flash visual evoked potential(FVEP)in rats of the of the transverse directional pulling model.Methods:Thirty-six Wistar rats were randomly grouped, nine were in normal control group without any treatment, and the remaining 27 were surgically modelled in the right eyes.Eighteen of these rats were randomly divided into a Wei’s triple nine needling therapy group and a model group of nine rats each after the TON model was made using the transverse quantitative retraction method. The other 9 rats were sham-operated,and only the optic nerve was exposed without retraction. On the next day of modelling, the Wei’s triple nine needling therapy group was treated with Wei’s triple nine needling therapy for 20 minutes/1 time/1 day for 14 days. The model group,sham-operated group and normal control group were not intervened.Wei's triple nine acupoints were represented as follows:1st link:"Jingming"(BL1)and"Chengqi"(ST1);2nd link:"Sizhukong"(SJ23)penetrating"Taiyang"(EX-HN5);and the third:"Fengchi"(GB 20)and"Taichong"(LV3).The FVEP of each group was observed on 1d,7d and 14d.The FVEP of each group was observed on 1d,7d and 14d.Results:Compared with the model group, the N2 wave latency and P2 wave latency were shortened in the Wei’s triple nine needling therapy on 1d(P<0.05,P<0.01);on 7d,their N2 wave latency was shortened(P<0.01)and the N2-P2 wave amplitude was increased compared with the model group(P<0.05);on 14d,their P2 wave latency was shortened(P<0.05)and the N2-P2 wave amplitude was increased. There was no statistical difference in N2 wave latency,P2 wave latency and N2-P2 wave amplitude in the sham-operated group on 1d,7d and 14d(P>0.05).The delayed N2 and P2 wave latencies in the model group did not improve from 1d to 14d(P>0.05)and the amplitude decreased throughout, showing a significant difference on 14d compared to 1d(P<0.05).In contrast, the N2 wave latency in Wei’s triple nine needling therapy group was not significantly different until 7d to 14d(P<0.05);its P2 wave latency, although significantly delayed from 1d to 7d(P<0.05),recovered on 14d and reached a level that was not statistically different from 1d and 7d(P>0.05).There was also no significant decrease in N2-P2 wave amplitude between 1d and 14d in Wei’s triple nine needling therapy group(P>0.05).Conclusion:In this experiment, the TON rat model was successfully established by the transverse quantitative retraction method, and the treatment of TON rats with Wei’s triple nine needling therapy reduced the P2 wave delay of the FVEP electrophysiological signal and increased the N2-P2 amplitude, which had a certain positive effect on the repair of optic nerve injury, probably related to its effect of improving the conduction function of the optic nerve and protecting the retinal ganglion cells that had not been degenerated and necrosed.
文摘Sensory abnormalities are common in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) but are often difficult to assess using standard behavioral methods. This case demonstrates the feasibility of establishing test-retest reliability for individuals with low-functioning autism and supports the utility of sensory evoked potentials in clinical and investigative ASD studies.
文摘BACKGROUND: Morphological data have shown that the most important afferent fibers of papillary body come from hippocampal structure. CONCLUSION: There are nerve associations between mamillary body and hippocampus, afferent fibers of mamillary body come from hippocampal CA1 region are a little more.
文摘BACKGROUND: It has been shown that although brain does not contain lining endothelial lymphatic vessel,it has lymphatic drain.Anterior lymphatic vessel in brain tissue plays a key role in introducing brain interstitial fluid to lymphatic system;however, the significance of lymphatic drain and the affect on cerebral edema remains unclear.OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of cerebral lymphatic block on cerebral morphology and cortical evoked potential in rats.DESIGN: Randomized controlled animal study.SETTING: Institute of Cerebral Microcirulation of Taishan Medical College and Department of Neurology of Affiliated Hospital.MATERIALS:A total of 63 healthy adult male Wistar rats weighing 300-350 g were selected in this study.Forty-seven rats were used for the morphological observation induced by lymphatic drain and randomly divided into three groups:general observation group(n=12),light microscopic observation group(n=21)and electronic microscopic observation group(n=14).The rats in each group were divided into cerebral lymphatic block subgroup and sham-operation control subgroup.Sixteen rats were divided into cerebral the effect of cerebral lymphatic block on cortical evoked potential,in which the animals were randomly divided into sham-operation group(n=6)and cerebral lymphatic block group(n=10).METHODS:The experiment was carried out in the Institute of Cerebral Microcirculation of Taishan Medical College from January to August 2003.Rats in cerebral lymphatic block group were anesthetized and separated bilateral superficial and deep cervical lymph nodes under sterile condition. Rats in sham-operation control group were not ligated the lymphatic vessel and removed lymph nodes.and other operations were as the same as those in cerebral lymphatic block group. Morphological changes of the brain and alterations of latency of cortical evoked potential were detected on the 1st ,2nd 3rd ,5th ,7th ,10th and 15th .days after operation under general, light microscope and electronic microscope observations.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:①Cerebral morphological changes;②latent changes of cortical evoked potential.RESULTS:A total of 63 rats were involved in the final analysis.①Cerebral morphological changes:General observation showed that, for cerebral lymphatic block rats, the surface of brain was pale and full, and cerebral gyrus was wide and flattened sulci after cerebral lymphatic block; and cerebral tissue space prolongation, increased interstitial fluid, neuronal degeneration and necrosis, diffused phagocytes and satellitosis were observed under light microscope.Neuronal swell and necrosis, gilal cell swell, apparent subcellular changes such as mitochondron were observed under electronic microscope. ②Latent changes of cortical evoked potential:As compared with sham-operation control group.1atency of cortical evoked potential in cerebral lymphatic blockage group prolonged on the 5th day and 7th day after cerebral lymphatic block[(6.28±0.23),(6.97±0.35)ms;(6.23±0.22),(7.12±0.20)ms;P<0.01].CONCLUSION:①Cerebral lymphatic block plays an important role in cerebral morphology, and may result in abnormaliy of sensitive impulse conduction and prolong latency of cortical evoked potential.②Examination of cortical evoked potential is easy and convenient,so it is regarded as a key index for lymphatic disturbed cerebral injury.
文摘Introduction: Many women think about reduction mammaplasty for different reasons. Our results confirm an inverse relationship between breast size and sensibility, with improvement in sensibility after breast reduction.
文摘Object: The efficacy of olfactory mucosa autograft (OMA) for chronic spinal cord injury has been reported. IMS might be a candidate of indication of OMA.
文摘Objective Evaluate the sensitivity and reliability of visual evoked potential to flash (F-VEP) in detecting bilirubin neurotoxicity and approach the risk parameters of bilirubin neurotoxicity in hyper-bilirubinemia newborns. Conclusion F-VEP would be a good discriminator for bilirubin neurotoxicity, and can become a promising technique in monitoring bilirubin encephalopathy.
文摘Purpose: This review article provides the readers with an in-depth insight in understanding and interpreting various research literatures on the masseter vestibular evoked myogenic potentials(mVEMP). However, further studies are required to probe in this area of research.
