Engines for Peace? Extractive Industries, Host Countries, and the International Community in Post-Conflict Peacebuilding

Extractive industries can provide great opportunities for post-conflict peacebuilding in resource-rich countries by providing revenue to finance reconstruction and set the economy back on track. However, the process of resource extraction often poses challenges for peacebuilding. This article first explains the various challenges that valuable natural resources can pose in post-conflict countries, and establishes a typology of post-conflict contexts where extractive industries, the host country, and the international community can play primary roles as peace promoters. It then elaborates on the specific roles each of these actors can play: i) what approaches are available for responsible companies that aim to be peace sensitive and even promote peace and development locally and nationally;ii) how a country that has some capacity and political will to secure long term peace and development can promote responsible exploitation;and iii) how international actors can promote responsible company and government behaviour in countries with low capacity and willingness use the natural resource base for the best of its whole population. 展开更多

In this work,the ternary azeotrope of tert-butyl alcohol/ethyl acetate/water is separated by extractive distillation(ED)to recover the available constituents and protect the environment.Based on the conductor like shielding model and relative volatility method,ethylene glycol was selected as the extractant in the separation process.In addition,in view of the characteristic that the relative volatility between components changes with pressure,the multi-objective optimization method based on nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II optimizes the pressure and the amount of solvent cooperatively to avoid falling into the optimal local solution.Based on the optimal process parameters,the proposed heat-integrated process can reduce the gas emissions by 29.30%.The heat-integrated ED,further coupled with the pervaporation process,can reduce gas emission by 42.36%and has the highest exergy efficiency of 47.56%.In addition,based on the heat-integrated process,the proposed two heat pump assisted heat-integrated ED processes show good economic and environmental performance.The double heat pump assisted heat-integrated ED can reduce the total annual cost by 28.78%and the gas emissions by 55.83%compared with the basis process,which has a good application prospect.This work provides a feasible approach for the separation of ternary azeotropes. 展开更多

Very recently,intensive discussions and studies on Industry 5.0 have sprung up and caused the attention of researchers,entrepreneurs,and policymakers from various sectors around the world.However,there is no consensus on why and what is Industry 5.0 yet.In this paper,we define Industry 5.0from its philosophical and historical origin and evolution,emphasize its new thinking on virtual-real duality and human-machine interaction,and introduce its new theory and technology based on parallel intelligence(PI),artificial societies,computational experiments,and parallel execution(the ACP method),and cyber-physical-social systems(CPSS).Case studies and applications of Industry 5.0 over the last decade have been briefly summarized and analyzed with suggestions for its future development.We believe that Industry 5.0 of virtual-real interactive parallel industries has great potentials and is critical for building smart societies.Steps are outlined to ensure a roadmap that would lead to a smooth transition from CPS-based Industry 4.0 to CPSS-based Industry 5.0 for a better world which is Safe in physical spaces,S ecure in cyberspaces,Sustainable in ecology,Sensitive in individual privacy and rights,Service for all,and Smartness of all. 展开更多

This wok proposed the extraction distillation coupled pervaporation(ED+PV) technology process using two different solvents to separate isopropanol(IPA) and diisopropyl ether(DIPE) from DIPE/IPA/H_(2)O ternary heterogeneous azeotropes in industrial wastewater from the synthesis of isopropanol in this study.Based on strict design specifications, simulation and sequential iteration methods are used for process design and optimization. Compared to the ethylene glycol(EG)-EG+H_(2)O process and the 1,3-propanediol(PDO)-IPA+H_(2)O process, the total annual cost(TAC) of the EG-IPA+H_(2)O process decreased by 20.76% and 7.86%(PDO). Compared to the EG-EG+H_(2)O process, the TAC of the PDO-IPA+H_(2)O process reduced 14%, but the global warming potential(GWP) and human toxicity of the PDO-IPA+H_(2)O process increased 11.3% and 4.07% respectively. Compared to the PDO-IPA+H_(2)O process, the EG-IPA+H_(2)O process saves 7.86%(TAC), 9.78%(GWP) and 9.85%(human toxicity). The ED+PV process with EG is superior to PDO in factors of TAC, energy consumption, human toxicity and environment. The EG-IPA+H_(2)O process changed the separation order of the products of the multi-azeotropic system, reduced the cost and energy conservation of the system, and enhanced the environmental protection evaluation of the process, is the best process through life cycle assessment for analyzing the economy, energy conservation, environmental assessment and human toxicity, designing cleaner products, controlling waste discharge, and promoting the chemical purification industry. This work provides a new process design and optimized separation ideas, will have a good guiding significance for the research and application separation of multi-azeotropic mixture with mixed solvents in organic wastewater from the cleaner chemical production, has been up to standard wastewater discharge process, and realized the development goal of carbon peak and carbon neutrality in the sustainable development of chemical clean industry. 展开更多

In order to analyze the technical structure and international comparative advantage of the information and communication technology(ICT)manufacturing industry,a complete set of ICT manufacturing product categories has been constructed by matching National Economical Industry Classification(GB/T4754-2017)with Harmonized System(HS)Codes,based on the relevant definitions in International Standard Industrial Classification(ISIC).The proposed definition overcomes inherent defects such as inaccurate scopes,lagging data and rough categories,which are characterized by commonly utilized product-level based classification approaches.Within the given framework,this paper has designed the technology content related indicators from the perspective of production distribution,and divided ICT product categories into high-end,medium-end and lowend manufacturing classifications according to respective global shares.Then,we have calculated international market shares(IMS),revealed comparative advantages(RCA),and market penetration rates(MPR)of ICT manufacturing exports for major economies from 2010 to 2021.Finally,development characterizations of ICT manufacturing industries for China’s Mainland are analyzed,and several practical suggestions are provided. 展开更多

Extractive distillation(ED)and solvent-assisted pressure-swing distillation(SA-PSD)are both special distillation processes that perform good at separating pressure-insensitive azeotropes.However,few reported studies have compared the performance of the two processes.In this paper,ED processes with N-methylpyrrolidone(NMP)and dimethlac-etamide(DMCA)as entrainer,SA-PSD process with isopropyl-alcohol(IPA)as solvent and SA-PSD process with partial heat integration(PHI-PSD)are proposed to achieve high purity separation of a mixture of cyclohexane/2-butanol system.The optimal operating conditions of the processes are obtained after optimizing with NSGA-Ⅱ algorithm when total annual cost(TAC)and the entropy production of process are set as objectives.The optimal results show that the optimal PHI-PSD process has lower TAC by 28.7% and the lower entropy production by 39.5% than the optimal SA-PSD process while the ED process with NMP as entrainer has lower TAC by 50.9% and the lower entropy production by 56.1% than the optimal SA-PSD process.The optimal results show that the ED process with NMP as entrainer has the best economic and thermodynamic efficiency among the four proposed processes in this paper. 展开更多

Mainstream industrial policy research cannot fully explain how government interventions have helped China’s mobile communications industry catch up with and overtake those of advanced nations.China’s mobile communications industry made breakthroughs in 3G,caught up with advanced nations in 4G,and gained a leadership position in 5G due to the implementation and improvement of a strategy of industrial competition that accommodates mainstream standards and prioritizes the mid-band spectrum based on the integrated“technology,standard and industry”deployment system and swift decision-making.The introduction of a perspective of a strategy of industrial competition may supplement industrial policy research in the following ways:First,when the concerted actions of numerous innovators are important for industrial competition performance,an effective strategy of industrial competition can be devised and overall coordinated by the government provided that is compatible with the catch-up development of emerging technological industries.Second,an industrial policy becomes effective when it is complementary with the strategic factors for long-term industrial performance such as the strategy of industrial competition and avoids serious disruptions to market-based mechanisms. 展开更多

Customer retention is one of the challenging issues in different business sectors,and variousfirms utilize customer churn prediction(CCP)process to retain existing customers.Because of the direct impact on the company revenues,particularly in the telecommunication sector,firms are needed to design effective CCP models.The recent advances in machine learning(ML)and deep learning(DL)models enable researchers to introduce accurate CCP models in the telecom-munication sector.CCP can be considered as a classification problem,which aims to classify the customer into churners and non-churners.With this motivation,this article focuses on designing an arithmetic optimization algorithm(AOA)with stacked bidirectional long short-term memory(SBLSTM)model for CCP.The proposed AOA-SBLSTM model intends to proficiently forecast the occurrence of CC in the telecommunication industry.Initially,the AOA-SBLSTM model per-forms pre-processing to transform the original data into a useful format.Besides,the SBLSTM model is employed to categorize data into churners and non-chur-ners.To improve the CCP outcomes of the SBLSTM model,an optimal hyper-parameter tuning process using AOA is developed.A widespread simulation analysis of the AOA-SBLSTM model is tested using a benchmark dataset with 3333 samples and 21 features.The experimental outcomes reported the promising performance of the AOA-SBLSTM model over the recent approaches. 展开更多

Due to its complexity and involvement of numerous stakeholders,the pharmaceutical supply chain presents many challenges that companies must overcome to deliver necessary medications to patients efficiently.The pharmaceutical supply chain poses different challenging issues,encompasses supply chain visibility,cold-chain shipping,drug counterfeiting,and rising prescription drug prices,which can considerably surge out-of-pocket patient costs.Blockchain(BC)offers the technical base for such a scheme,as it could track legitimate drugs and avoid fake circulation.The designers presented the procedure of BC with fabric for creating a secured drug supplychain management(DSCM)method.With this motivation,the study presents a new blockchain with optimal deep learning-enabled DSCM and recommendation scheme(BCODL-DSCMRS)for Pharmaceutical Industries.Firstly,Hyperledger fabric is used for DSC management,enabling effective tracking processes in the smart pharmaceutical industry.In addition,a hybrid deep belief network(HDBN)model is used to suggest the best or top-rated medicines to healthcare providers and consumers.The spotted hyena optimizer(SHO)algorithm is used to optimize the performance of the HDBN model.The design of the HSO algorithm for tuning the HDBN model demonstrates the novelty of the work.The presented model is tested on the UCI repository’s open-access drug reviews database. 展开更多

Carbon emission efficiency of forest processing industries in China

This paper uses an input-output table of China's provinces(2007-2016) to measure carbon emissions of these industries.It employs a Malmquist-Luenberger(ML) index with expected and undesired outputs,and an absolute β convergence and a conditional β convergence model,to conduct an in-depth analysis of dynamic changes and spatial convergence.Carbon emission efficiency of forest processing industries in 25 regions,including Shanghai,Chongqing,Zhejiang,and Jiangsu are increasing,whereas those of Tianjin,Liaoning,Heilongjiang,and Tibet are decreasing.The main contributing factors of carbon emission efficiency in three major regions vary over time.Further,carbon emission efficiency in the eastern,central,and western regions all have absolute β convergence and conditional β convergence,indicating that different regions are developing toward their own goals and industry,yet regions with lower efficiency are catching up with those where with more efficient strategies in place.Finally,this paper proposes according recommendations. 展开更多

The book chapter is an extended version of the research paper entitled “Use of Component Integration Services in Multidatabase Systems”, which is presented and published by the 13<sup>th</sup> ISITA, the National Conference of Recent Trends in Mathematical and Computer Sciences, T.M.B. University, Bhagalpur, India, January 3-4, 2015. Information is widely distributed across many remote, distributed, and autonomous databases (local component databases) in heterogeneous formats. The integration of heterogeneous remote databases is a difficult task, and it has already been addressed by several projects to certain extents. In this chapter, we have discussed how to integrate heterogeneous distributed local relational databases because of their simplicity, excellent security, performance, power, flexibility, data independence, support for new hardware technologies, and spread across the globe. We have also discussed how to constitute a global conceptual schema in the multidatabase system using Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise’s Component Integration Services (CIS) and OmniConnect. This is feasible for higher education institutions and commercial industries as well. Considering the higher educational institutions, the CIS will improve IT integration for educational institutions with their subsidiaries or with other institutions within the country and abroad in terms of educational management, teaching, learning, and research, including promoting international students’ academic integration, collaboration, and governance. This will prove an innovative strategy to support the modernization and large expansion of academic institutions. This will be considered IT-institutional alignment within a higher education context. This will also support achieving one of the sustainable development goals set by the United Nations: “Goal 4: ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning”. However, the process of IT integration into higher educational institutions must be thoroughly evaluated, identifying the vital data access points. In this chapter, Section 1 provides an introduction, including the evolution of various database systems, data models, and the emergence of multidatabase systems and their importance. Section 2 discusses component integration services (CIS), OmniConnect and considering heterogeneous relational distributed local databases from the perspective of academics, Section 3 discusses the Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE), Section 4 discusses the role of component integration services and OmniConnect of Sybase ASE under the Multidatabase System, Section 5 shows the database architectural framework, Section 6 provides an implementation overview of the global conceptual schema in the multidatabase system, Section 7 discusses query processing in the CIS, and finally, Section 8 concludes the chapter. The chapter will help our students a lot, as we have discussed well the evolution of databases and data models and the emergence of multidatabases. 传统沉淀法提锂生产周期长、不适用于低锂浓度卤水,盐湖提锂产量增长缓慢,难以满足新能源产业发展的需求。因此,开发高镁锂比卤水提锂新技术是锂产业发展的迫切需求。本文概述了吸附法、萃取法、膜法和电化学法等提锂新工艺的研究现状,... 传统沉淀法提锂生产周期长、不适用于低锂浓度卤水,盐湖提锂产量增长缓慢,难以满足新能源产业发展的需求。因此,开发高镁锂比卤水提锂新技术是锂产业发展的迫切需求。本文概述了吸附法、萃取法、膜法和电化学法等提锂新工艺的研究现状,发现铝基吸附剂已应用于工业生产,但其吸附容量显著地小于锰基和钛基吸附剂,而后两者的溶损和长吸附平衡时间是制约其产业化的关键。中性磷类萃取剂关注最多,但其易腐蚀和出现第三相;酰胺类萃取体系无腐蚀,已用于氯化物型卤水工业化提锂,但其稳定性需长期关注;并且萃取法工艺流程较长,酸碱消耗高。膜法无法深度除镁,需与其他方法相结合提锂,其水资源消耗量大。电渗析和“摇椅式”电化学实现了连续性提锂,加速了吸附速率,避免了洗脱剂的使用,其电耗随着优化提锂体系和工作条件的降低,电化学提锂将迎来广阔的产业前景。以上卤水提锂新工艺资源消耗和环境影响小于传统沉淀法,对高镁锂比盐湖具有显著的竞争优势,但各有弊端。因此,未来盐湖卤水提锂应加强多种新技术的集成与耦合,前移提锂过程,提升全流程锂的回收率和多种资源的综合开发。 展开更多

为获得结构化的小麦品种表型和遗传描述,针对非结构化小麦种质数据中存在的实体边界模糊以及关系重叠问题,提出一种基于深度字词融合的小麦种质信息实体关系联合抽取模型WGIE-DCWF(wheat germplasm information extraction model based ... 为获得结构化的小麦品种表型和遗传描述,针对非结构化小麦种质数据中存在的实体边界模糊以及关系重叠问题,提出一种基于深度字词融合的小麦种质信息实体关系联合抽取模型WGIE-DCWF(wheat germplasm information extraction model based on deep character and word fusion)。模型编码层通过深度字词融合和上下文语义特征融合,提高密集实体特征识别能力;模型三元组抽取层建立层叠指针网络,提高重叠关系的提取能力。在小麦种质数据集和公开数据集上的一系列对比实验结果表明,WGIE-DCWF模型能够有效提高小麦种质数据实体关系联合抽取效果,同时拥有较好的泛化性,可以为小麦种质信息知识库构建提供技术支撑。 展开更多
