Dust removal from pyrolytic vapors at high temperatures is an obstacle to the industrialization of the coal pyrolysis process. In this work,a granular bed with expanded perlites as filtration media was designed and integrated into a 10 t·d^(–1)coal pyrolysis facility. The testing results showed that around 97.56%dust collection efficiency was achieved. As a result, dust content in tar was significantly lowered. The pressure drop of the granular bed maintained in the range of 356 Pa to 489 Pa.The dust size in the effluent after filtration exhibited a bimodal distribution, which was attributed to the heterogeneity of the dust components. The effects of filtration bed on pyrolytic product yields were also discussed.A modified filtration model based on the macroscopic phenomenological theory was proposed to describe the performance of the granular bed.The computation results were well agreed with the experimental data. 展开更多

Granular segregation is widely observed in nature and industry. Most research has focused on segregation caused by differences in the size and density of spherical grains. However, due to the fact that grains typically have different shapes, the focus is shifting towards shape segregation. In this study, experiments are conducted by mixing cubic and spherical grains. The results indicate that spherical grains gather at the center and cubic grains are distributed around them, and the degree of segregation is low.Through experiments,a structured analysis of local regions is conducted to explain the inability to form stable segregation patterns with obviously different geometric shapes.Further, through simulations, the reasons for the central and peripheral distributions are explained by comparing velocities and the number of collisions of the grains in the flow layer. 展开更多

This paper presents a micromechanics-based Cosserat continuum model for microstructured granular materials.By utilizing this model, the macroscopic constitutive parameters of granular materials with different microstructures are expressed as sums of microstructural information. The microstructures under consideration can be classified into three categories:a medium-dense microstructure,a dense microstructure consisting of one-sized particles, and a dense microstructure consisting of two-sized particles.Subsequently, the Cosserat elastoplastic model, along with its finite element formulation,is derived using the extended Drucker-Prager yield criteria. To investigate failure behaviors, numerical simulations of granular materials with different microstructures are conducted using the ABAQUS User Element(UEL)interface. It demonstrates the capacity of the proposed model to simulate the phenomena of strain-softening and strain localization. The study investigates the influence of microscopic parameters, including contact stiffness parameters and characteristic length,on the failure behaviors of granularmaterials withmicrostructures.Additionally, the study examines themesh independence of the presented model and establishes its relationship with the characteristic length.A comparison is made between finite element simulations and discrete element simulations for a medium-dense microstructure, revealing a good agreement in results during the elastic stage.Somemacroscopic parameters describing plasticity are shown to be partially related to microscopic factors such as confining pressure and size of the representative volume element. 展开更多

We present a short retrospective review of the existing literature about the dynamics of(dry)granular matter under the effect of vibrations. The main objective is the development of an integrated resource where vital information about past findings and recent discoveries is provided in a single treatment.Special attention is paid to those works where successful synthetic routes to as-yet unknown phenomena were identified.Such landmark results are analyzed, while smoothly blending them with a history of the field and introducing possible categorizations of the prevalent dynamics.Although no classification is perfect, and it is hard to distillate general properties out of specific observations or realizations, two possible ways to interpret the existing results are defined according to the type of forcing or the emerging(ensuing)regime of motion. In particular, first results concerning the case where vibrations and gravity are concurrent(vertical shaking)are examined, then the companion situation with vibrations perpendicular to gravity(horizontal shaking)is described.Universality classes are introduced as follows:(1)Regimes where sand self-organizes leading to highly regular geometrical“pulsating”patterns(thin layer case);(2)Regimes where the material undergoes“fluidization”and develops an internal multicellular convective state(tick layers case);(3)Regimes where the free interface separating the sand from the overlying gas changes inclination or develops a kind a patterned configuration consisting of stable valleys and mountains or travelling waves;(4)Regimes where segregation is produced,i.e.,particles of a given size tend to be separated from the other grains(deep containers).Where possible,an analogy or parallelism is drawn with respect to the companion field of fluid-dynamics for which the assumption of“continuum”can be applied. 展开更多

This study aims to quantify the susceptibility of granular materials used in pavements to changes in moisture content and propose a correlation model to incorporate this susceptibility into seasonal analyses. The fines content and the percentage of fractured coarse aggregates were identified as direct indicators of the resilient modulus susceptibility to changes in water content. The results showed that the percentage of fractured coarse aggregates particles(FR)has a more significant impact on the resilient modulus(Er)of crushed granular materials used in pavement construction than the combined indicator of the fines content and sample volumetrics(nf).Crushed granular materials with a higher percentage of fractured coarse aggregates are relatively insensitive to changes in the degree of saturation, but become more sensitive as the fine fraction porosity decreases. An adjusted model was proposed based on the existing formulation, but considers a complex parameter to describe and adjust the sensitivity of base granular materials to variations in moisture content with respect to fabrication charac-teristics,fines content and volumetric properties. The model shows that the variation of Er values is below10%for fully crushed granular materials. However,it reaches approximately±12%for materials with 75%of crushed coarse aggregates andþ40%and-25%for materials with FR=50%.This model could help select good ag-gregates characteristics and adjust grain-size distribution for environments where significant moisture content variations can occur in the pavement system, such as in the Province of Quebec(Canada). As it is based on pa-rameters that can be easily determined or estimated,it also represents a valuable tool for detailed design and analysis that can consider material characteristics. 展开更多

In Côte d’Ivoire, the decline in soil fertility strongly impacts the productivity of maize (Zea mays L.) on heavily leached ferralitic soil. In this study, the general objective was therefore to improve the productivity of maize EV87-28 on the Ferralsols in pre-forested areas during different cropping seasons. Eight (8) micro-plots were set up according to a total randomization device with three repetitions. Two factors were studied: nitrogen fertilizer modalities (main factor) and crop season (secondary factor). Growth, flowering and yield parameters were measured and analyzed. The results showed that there was no interaction between the nitrogen fertilizer factor and the cropping season factor. In addition, this study showed the short rainy season had the most positive impact on growth, flowering and yield parameters than the long rainy season. The results also showed that the different nitrogen fertilizer modalities had no statistically different effects on growth, flowering and yield parameters. However, quantitative differences were reported, highlighting one nitrogen fertilizer modality, which is the combination of urea granule + farm manure (75% urea indorama granules and 25% farm manure). The combination of urea granule + farm manure (75% urea indorama granules and 25% farm manure) had the best effect on corn grain yield. So, the combination of urea (75%) and manure (25%), that resulted in yield gain, could be recommended for corn fertilization during the small rainy season. 展开更多

Central granular cell odontogenic tumors(CGCOTs)are rare, benign, slowly growing odontogenic neoplasms.Due to their uncertain histogenesis,CGCOTs are still not included as a distinct entity in the WHO classification(2017)of odontogenic tumors. We report a case of CGCOT involving the right side of maxillary anterior region of a 39-year-old white female.Immunohistochemical staining showed that granular cells positively expressed CD68 and vimentin, and negatively expressed S-100 protein.Meanwhile,we searched Pub Med,Google Scholar, and Scopus databases to summary the clinico-pathological features of 51 reported cases of CGCOT.The results showed that the granular cells of 28.6%cases were immunopositive for vimentin and CD68,and odontogenic epithelial cells were positive immunoreactivity for cytokeratin. These findings reinforced the mesenchymal origin of granular cells and the odontogenic nature of epithelium islands. 展开更多

A hyaluronic acid granular hydrogel can promote neuronal and astrocyte colony formation and axonal extension in vitro, suggesting that the hydrogel can simulate an extracellular matrix structure to promote neural regeneration. However,in vivo experiments have not been conducted. In this study,we transplanted a hyaluronic acid granular hydrogel nerve guidance conduit to repair a 10-mm long sciatic nerve gap.The Basso,Beattie, and Bresnahan locomotor rating scale, sciatic nerve compound muscle action potential recording,Fluoro-Gold retrograde tracing, growth related protein 43/S100 immunofluorescence staining, transmission electron microscopy, gastrocnemius muscle dry/wet weight ratio, and Masson’s trichrome staining results showed that the nerve guidance conduit exhibited similar regeneration of sciatic nerve axons and myelin sheath, and recovery of the electrophysiological function and motor function as autologous nerve transplantation. The conduit results were superior to those of a bulk hydrogel or silicone tube transplant. These findings suggest that tissue-engineered nerve conduits containing hyaluronic acid granular hydrogels effectively promote the morphological and functional recovery of the injured sciatic nerve. The nerve conduits have the potential as a material for repairing peripheral nerve defects. 展开更多

We employ a Hall-effect magnetic sensor array to accurately track the trajectory of a single magnetic sphere, referred to as the“intruder,”within a three-dimensional vibro-fluidized granular bed to unravel the underlying physical mechanism governing the motion of the intruder.Within the acceleration range of 3.5 g≥Γ≥1.5 g,we find that, regardless of the intruder's initial position,it consistently reaches the same equilibrium depth when the vibration acceleration(Γ)and frequency(ω)are fixed.ForΓ≤2.5 g,the equilibrium position lies on the surface of the granular bed, while forΓ>2.5 g,it shifts below the surface.Additionally, intruders with different densities exhibit varying equilibrium depths, with higher density resulting in a deeper equilibrium position. To understand the mechanism behind the intruder's upward or downward motion,we measure its rising or sinking velocities under different vibration parameters. Our findings demonstrate that the rising velocity of the intruder, under varying vibration accelerations(Γ)and frequencies(ω),can be collapsed using the ratioΓ/ω,while the sinking velocity remains unaffected by the vibration strength. This confirms that the upward motion of the larger sphere, associated with the Brazil nut effect, primarily arises from the void-filling mechanism of the bed particles.Furthermore, our experiments reveal that the presence of convection within the bed particles has minimal impact on the motion of the intruder. 展开更多

This paper presents an experimental study on the resistance law of a rod vertically penetrating different kinds of multilayer granular rafts with a constant velocity so as to reveal the mechanical properties of the multilayer granular rafts. The resistance was quasi-static under the chosen velocity.Experiments were conducted with different granular thicknesses, rod diameters and combinations of particles and liquids. The study shows that the resistance–displacement relation of the rod has three smooth stages. In the first stage, the resistance rapidly increased. In the second stage, the resistance curve maintained an almost constant slope. In the third stage, the resistance smoothly changed with its slope continuously increasing.Based on the corresponding physical models for each stage, the study reveals the exponential dependence of the load-bearing capacity of the multilayer granular raft on its thickness, and clarifies the capillary effects on the resistance law.The study extends the knowledge of the granular raft from monolayer to multilayer structure. 展开更多

This research aims to develop a methodology for applying the geostatistical method to generate a groutability classification for granular soils. To ensure the precision of the suggested technique,a total of 103 data samples were used.Predicting the groutability of granular soils has always been difficult because of many soil characteristics. As a result,a new two-dimensional graph, the groutability classification of granular soil(GCS)chart, was developed.GCS establishment was based on data analysis of the grain size of soil and cement-based grouts(N1 and N2),relative density(Dr)and fines content of the soil(FC),water/cement ratio of grout mixture(w/c),and grouting pressure(P),all of which have a direct impact on the groutability of soil media. The geostatistical method was used to develop and compile the GCS graph based on the aforementioned parameters with the use of coefficient S,which is a coefficient of the scoring set of parameters including P,w/c,Dr,and FC.The validation process was carried out hierarchically, with an additional set of 30 data. The proposed method has a prediction accuracy of roughly 96.7%,demonstrating a helpful tool. The proposed approach can be easily implemented in practical engineering situations because it has a comparable syntax to commonly used formulae. It should be noted that the proposed formula was only tested using the data samples collected, and the applicability of the produced procedure to other situations requires more examination. 展开更多

The pressure evolution associated with the transient shock-induced infiltration of gas flow through granular media consisting of mobile particles is numerically investigated using a coupled Eulerian–Lagrangian approach. The coupling between shock compaction and interstitial flow has been revealed.A distinctive two-stage diffusing pressure field with deflection occurring at the tail of the compaction front is found, with corresponding spikes in both gaseous velocity and temperature profiles emerging within the width of the compaction front. The compaction front, together with the deflection pressure, reaches a steady state during the later period. An analytical prediction of the steady deflection pressure that considers the contributions of porosity and the non-isothermal effect is proposed. The isothermal single-phase method we developed, combining the porosity jump condition across the compaction front, shows consistent pressure evolution with the non-isothermal CMP-PIC one under weak shock strength and low column permeability.Lastly, the microscale mechanism governing the formation of not only pressure deflection but also gaseous velocity and temperature spikes within the width of the compaction front has been described. These aforementioned evolutions of the flow field are shown to arise from the nozzling effects associated with the particle-scale variations in the volume fraction. 展开更多

The particle size ratio(PSR)is an important parameter for binary granular materials, which may aect the microstructure and macro behaviors of granular materials. However, the eect of particle ratio on granular assemblies with dierent arrangements is still unclear. To explore and further clarify the eect of PSR in dierent packing structures, three types of numerical samples with regular, layered, and random packing are designed.Numerical results show that PSR has signi􀀀cant eects on binary granular samples with regular packing. The larger the PSR,the stronger the strength, the larger the modulus, and the smaller the angle between the shear band and the load direction. And a theoretical solution of the peak stress ratio vs.PSR is obtained for regular packing, and the results by DEM are in good agreement with the theoretical solution.Under layered packing,PSR has little eect on peak stress ratio due to similar microstructure obtained with the changing of PSR.The modulus slightly increased with the increase of PSR.Under random packing with small grain content of 50%,PSR has little eect in the range of 0.5–0.9,but in a larger range, larger PSR leads to greater modulus. 展开更多

Thanks to the strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy(PMA), excellent processing compatibility as well as novel spintronic phenomenon, Co/Pt multilayers have been attracting massive attention and widely used in magnetic storage. However, reversed magnetic domains come into being with the increasing layer repetition ‘N’ to reduce magneto-static energy, resulting in the remarkable diminishment of the remanent magnetization(Mr). As a result, the product of Mrand thickness(i.e., the remanent moment-thickness product, Mrt), a key parameter in magnetic recording for reliable data storing and reading, also decreases dramatically. To overcome this issue, we deposit an ultra-thick granular [Co/Pt]80multilayer with a total thickness of 68 nm on granular SiNxbuffer layer. The Mrt value, Mrto saturation magnetization(Ms) ratio as well as out of plane(OOP) coercivity(Hcoop) are high up to 2.97 memu/cm^(2), 67%, and 1940 Oe(1 Oe = 79.5775 A·m^(-1)),respectively, which is remarkably improved compared with that of continuous [Co/Pt]80multilayers. That is because large amounts of grain boundaries in the granular multilayers can efficiently impede the propagation and expansion of reversed magnetic domains, which is verified by experimental investigations and micromagnetic simulation results. The simulation results also indicate that the value of Mrt, Mr/Msratio, and Hcoopcan be further improved through optimizing the granule size, which can be experimentally realized by manipulating the process parameter of SiNxbuffer layer. This work provides an alternative solution for achieving high Mrt value in ultra-thick Co/Pt multilayers, which is of unneglectable potential in applications of high-density magnetic recording. 展开更多

Discrete element method(DEM)has been widely utilised to model the mechanical behaviours of granular materials. However, with simplified particle morphology or rheology-based rolling resistance models,DEM failed to describe some responses, such as the particle kinematics at the grain-scale and the principal stress ratio against axial strain at the macro-scale.This paper adopts a computed tomography(CT)-based DEM technique, including particle morphology data acquisition from micro-CT(mCT),spherical harmonic-based principal component analysis(SH-PCA)-based particle morphology reconstruction and DEM simulations,to investigate the capability of DEM with realistic particle morphology for modelling granular soils’micro-macro mechanical responses with a consideration of the initial packing state, the morphological gene mutation degree, and the confining stress condition. It is found that DEM with realistic particle morphology can reasonably reproduce granular materials’micro-macro mechanical behaviours, including the deviatoric stressevolumetric straineaxial strain response, critical state behaviour, particle kinematics, and shear band evolution.Meanwhile, the role of multiscale particle morphology in granular soils depends on the initial packing state and the confining stress condition. For the same granular soils, rougher particle surfaces with a denser initial packing state and a higher confining stress condition result in a higher degree of shear strain localisation. 展开更多

Predicting the constitutive response of granular soils is a fundamental goal in geomechanics. This paper presents a machine learning(ML)framework for the prediction of the stress-strain behaviour and shearinduced contact fabric evolution of an idealised granular material subject to triaxial shearing. The MLbased framework is comprised of a set of mini-triaxial tests which provide a benchmark for the setup and validation of the discrete element method(DEM)model of the granular materials,a parametric DEM simulation programme of virtual triaxial tests which provides datasets of micro-and macro-mechanical information,as well as a multi-layer perceptron(MLP)neural network which is trained and tested using the DEM-based datasets. The ML model only requires the initial void ratio of the granular sample as the input for predicting its constitutive response. The excellent agreement between the ML model prediction and experimental test and DEM simulation results indicates that the MLebased modelling approach is capable of capturing accurately the effects of initial void ratio on the constitutive behaviour of idealised granular materials, bypassing the need to incorporate the complex micromechanics underlying the macroscopic mechanical behaviour of granular materials.Lastly,a detailed comparison between the used MLP model and long short-term memory(LSTM)model was made from the perspective of technical algorithm, prediction accuracy, and computational efficiency. 展开更多

That is a key parameter for the design and analysis of soil fluid associated structures and issues. This paper presents the test results of the vertical hydraulic conductivity kv carried out on one poorly graded sand and three gap graded gravely sand. It was found that the vertical hydraulic conductivity of saturated soil depends on the grain size distribution curve, on the initial relative density of the soil. Compilation of these current test results and other test results published, shows that the common approaches predict well to some extent the vertical hydraulic conductivity kv for the poorly graded sand materials and underestimate the kv values for gap graded gravely sand materials. Therefore, new approaches are developed for the prediction of the vertical hydraulic conductivity in saturated poorly graded sand and gap graded gravely sand. The derived results from the new approaches lie in the range of the recommended values by (EAU 2012) and (NAVFAC DM 7 1974). 展开更多

In order to make formalization for granular computing, some kinds of formulas are constructed on a universe by a logical method. Every formula expresses a property, and can separate a semantic set which consists of all of the objects satisfying the formula. Therefore a granular space on the universe is produced based on the formulas, and the semantic sets separated by the formulas are taken as a formal definition for granules, and are called abstract granules.Furthermore,it is proved that any specific granule from an extended mathematical system can be formalized into an abstract granule, the conclusions is obtained that specific granules from approximate spaces and information systems can also be formalized into abstract granules. Based on a granular space and abstract granules, granular computing is defined, which finally realizes the goal of formalization for granular computing. 展开更多
