As the degreeof cleaning of the wellbore plays a key role in these processes, in this study, this problem is investigated experimentallyby focusing on the dimensionless cuttings bed height. A method is proposed to calculate the horizontalwellhydraulic extension taking into account the influence of the wellbore cleaning degree on the wellborepressure distribution and assess the effect of a variety of factors such as the bottom hole pressure, the circulatingpressure drop, the drilling pump performance and the formation properties. The analysis shows that the hydraulicextension of horizontal wells decreases with an increase in the cuttings bed height, and the higher the displacementof drilling fluid, the faster the hydraulic extension declines. The annular pressure drop of the horizontalsection increases with the increase of the cuttings bed height, resulting in a higher bottom-hole pressure. Severalarguments are provided to guide the safe drilling of shale oil horizontal wells and overcome the limits of currenttechnological approaches.展开更多

Apart from intrinsic geologic factors that control the gas shale productivity (e.g. organic matter content, bedding planes, natural fractures, porosity and stress regime among others), external factors like wellbore orientation and stimulation design play a role. In this study, we present a series of true triaxial hydraulic fracturing experiments conducted on Lushan shale to investigate the interplay of internal factors (bedding, natural fractures and in situ stress) and external factors (wellbore orientation) on the growth process of fracture networks in cubic specimens of 200 mm in length. We observe relatively low breakdown pressure and fracture propagation pressure as the wellbore orientation and/or the maximum in situ stress is subparallel to the shale bedding plane. The wellbore orientation has a more prominent effect on the breakdown pressure, but its effect is tapered with increasing angle of bedding inclination. The shale breakdown is followed by an abrupt response in sample displacement, which reflects the stimulated fracture volume. Based on fluid tracer analysis, the morphology of hydraulic fractures (HF) is divided into four categories. Among the categories, activation of bedding planes (bedding failure, BF) and natural fractures (NF) significantly increase bifurcation and fractured areas. Under the same stress regime, a horizontal wellbore is more favorable to enhance the complexity of hydraulic fracture networks. This is attributed to the relatively large surface area in contact with the bedding plane for the horizontal borehole compared to the case with a vertical wellbore. These findings provide important references for hydraulic fracturing design in shale reservoirs.展开更多

文摘This paper describes numerical simulation of hydraulic fracturing using fracture-based continuum modeling(FBCM)of coupled geomechanical-hydrological processes to evaluate a technique for high-density fracturing and fracture caging. The simulations are innovative because of modeling discrete fractures explicitly in continuum analysis.A key advantage of FBCM is that fracture initiation and propagation are modeled explicitly without changing the domain grid(i.e.no re-meshing).Further,multiple realizations of a preexisting fracture distribution can be analyzed using the same domain grid. The simulated hydraulic fracturing technique consists of pressurizing multiple wells simultaneously:initially without permeating fluids into the rock,to seed fractures uniformly and at high density in the wall rock of the wells;followed by fluid injection to propagate the seeded fracture density hydraulically.FBCM combines the ease of continuum modeling with the potential accuracy of modeling discrete fractures and fracturing explicitly.Fractures are modeled as piecewise planar based on intersections with domain elements;fracture geometry stored as continuum properties is used to calculate parameters needed to model individual fractures;and rock behavior is modeled through tensorial aggregation of the behavior of discrete fractures and unfractured rock.Simulations are presented for previously unfractured rock and for rock with preexisting fractures of horizontal,shallow-dipping,steeply dipping,or vertical orientation.Simulations of a single-well model are used to determine the pattern and spacing for a multiple-well design. The results illustrate high-density fracturing and fracture caging through simultaneous fluid injection in multiple wells:for previously unfractured rock or rock with preexisting shallow-dipping or horizontal fractures, and in situ vertical compressive stress greater than horizontal. If preexisting fractures are steeply dipping or vertical, and considering the same in situ stress condition, well pressurization without fluid permeation appears to be the only practical way to induce new fractures and contain fracturing within the target domain.

文摘Deepsea mining has been proposed since the 1960s to alleviate the lack of resources on land.Vertical hydraulic transport of collected ores from the seabed to the sea surface is considered the most promising method for industrial applications. In the present study,an indoor model test of the vertical hydraulic transport of particles was conducted.A noncontact optical method has been proposed to measure the local characteristics of the particles inside a vertical pipe, including the local concentration and particle velocity. The hydraulic gradient of ore transport was evaluated with various particle size distributions, particle densities, feeding concentrations and mixture flow velocities.During transport, the local concentration is larger than the feeding concentration, whereas the particle velocity is less than the mixture velocity. The qualitative effects of the local concentration and local fluid velocity on the particle velocity and slip velocity were investigated. The local fluid velocity contributes significantly to particle velocity and slip velocity, whereas the effect of the local concentration is marginal.A higher feeding concentration and mixture flow velocity result in an increased hydraulic gradient. The effect of the particle size gradation is slight, whereas the particle density plays a crucial role in the transport.

文摘A novel phase-field model for the propagation of mixed-mode hydraulic fractures, characterized by the formation of mixed-mode fractures due to the interactions between fluids and solids,is proposed. In this model, the driving force for the phase field consists of both tensile and shear components, with the fluid contribution primarily manifesting in the tension driving force. The displacement and pressure are solved simultaneously by an implicit method. The numerical solution's iterative format is established by the finite element discretization and Newton-Raphson(NR)iterative methods. The correctness of the model is verified through the uniaxial compression physical experiments on fluid-pressurized rocks, and the limitations of the hydraulic fracture expansion phase-field model, which only considers mode I fractures, are revealed. In addition, the influence of matrix mode II fracture toughness value, natural fracture mode II toughness value, and fracturing fluid injection rate on the hydraulic fracture propagation in porous media with natural fractures is studied.

文摘In groundwater hydrology, aquitard heterogeneity is often less considered compared to aquifers, despite its significant impact on groundwater hydraulics and groundwater resources evaluation.A semi-analytical solution is derived for pumping-induced well hydraulics and groundwater budget with consideration of vertical heterogeneity in aquitard hydraulic conductivity(K)and specific storage(S_(s)).The proposed new solution is innovative in its partitioning of the aquitard into multiple homogeneous sub-layers to enable consideration of various forms of vertically heterogeneous K or S_(s).Two scenarios of analytical investigations are explored:one is the presence of aquitard interlayers with distinct K or S_(s) values,a common field-scale occurrence;another is an exponentially depth-decaying aquitard S_(s),a regional-scale phenomenon supported by statistical analysis.Analytical investigations reveal that a low-K interlayer can significantly increase aquifer drawdown and enhance aquifer/aquitard depletion;a high-S_(s) interlayer can noticeably reduce aquifer drawdown and increase aquitard depletion.Locations of low-K or high-S_(s) interlayers also significantly impact well hydraulics and groundwater budget. In the context of an exponentially depth-decaying aquitard S_(s),a larger decay exponent can enhance aquifer drawdown. When using current models with a vertically homogeneous aquitard, half the sum of the geometric and harmonic means of exponentially depth-decaying aquitard S_(s) should be used to calculate aquitard depletion and unconfined aquifer leakage.

文摘The efficient development and exploitation of shale oil depends on long-distance horizontal wells. Severalarguments are provided to guide the safe drilling of shale oil horizontal wells and overcome the limits of currenttechnological approaches.

文摘Hydraulic jetting is a form of fracturing that involves using a high-pressure jet of water to create fractures in the reservoir rock with a nozzle serving as the central component of the hydraulic sandblasting perforation tool.In this study, the flow behavior of the nozzle is simulated numerically in the framework of a SST k-ωturbulence model. The results show that the nozzle structure can significantly influence the jet performance and related cavitation effect.Through orthogonal experiments, the nozzle geometric parameters are optimized, and the following configuration is found accordingly:contraction angle 20°,contraction segment length 6 mm,cylindrical segment diameter 6 mm,cylindrical segment length 12 mm,spread segment length 10 mm,and spread angle 55°.

文摘A jet mill bit(JMB)is proposed to increase the drilling efficiency and safety of horizontal wells, which has the hydraulic characteristics of depressurization and cuttings cleaning. This paper fills the gap in the hydraulic study of the JMB by focusing on the hydraulic modeling and optimization of the JMB and considering these two hydraulic characteristics.First, the hydraulic depressurization model and the hydraulic cuttings cleaning model of the JMB are developed respectively. In the models, the pressure ratio and efficiency are chosen as the evaluation parameters of the depressurization capacity of the JMB,and the jet hydraulic power and jet impact force are chosen as the evaluation parameters of cuttings cleaning capacity of the JMB.Second, based on the hydraulic models, the effects of model parameters[friction loss coefficient, target inclination angle, rate of penetration(ROP),flow ratio, and well depth]on the hydraulic performance of the JMB are investigated. The results show that an increase in the friction loss coefficient and target inclination angle cause a significant reduction in the hydraulic depressurization capacity, and the effect of ROP is negligible. The flow ratio is positively related to the hydraulic cuttings cleaning capacity, and the well depth determines the maximum hydraulic cuttings cleaning capacity. Finally,by combining the hydraulic depressurization model and hydraulic cuttings cleaning model,an optimization method of JMB hydraulics is proposed to simultaneously maximize the jet depressurization capacity and the cuttings cleaning capacity.According to the drilling parameters given, the optimal values of the drilling fluid flow rate, backward nozzle diameter, forward nozzle diameter, and throat diameter can be determined. Moreover,a case study is conducted to verify the effectiveness of the optimization method.

文摘The rock bridges sandwiched in incipiently jointed rock mass were considered as barriers that block the fluid seepage, and provide certain shear strength reservation. For better revealing the influence of hydraulic pressure on the failure behaviour of rock bridges, direct shear tests were carried out through a newly proposed method on rock samples that contain two parallel incipient joints.By developing the gypsum-silicone pad coupling samples,a conventional triaxial test system was qualified to implement direct shear tests with satisfied sealing capability. The results showed that the rock bridges could be failed through the tensile failure, shear failure and mixed failure mechanism. The hydraulic pressure would facilitate the tensile failure mechanism and induce rougher fracture surfaces;while the normal stress would facilitate the shear failure mechanism and induce less rough fracture. The hydraulic pressure reduced the global shear strength of the rock block through reducing the efficient normal stress applied on the rock bridge area, which was highly dependent on the joint persistence,k.Moreover, because of the iterating occurrence of the hydraulic pressure lag with the fracture propagation, the rock bridge failure stage in the shear stress-shear displacement curves displayed a fluctuation trend.
文摘The wide engineered application of compacted expansive soils necessitates understanding their behavior under field conditions. The results of this study demonstrate how seasonal climatic variation and stress and boundary conditions individually or collectively influence the hydraulic and volume change behavior of compacted highly expansive soils. The cyclic wetting and drying(CWD)process was applied for two boundary conditions,i.e.constant stress(CS)and constant volume(CV),and for a wide range of axial stress states. The adopted CWD process affected the hydraulic and volume change behaviors of expansive soils, with the first cycle of wetting and drying being the most effective. The CWD process under CS conditions resulted in shrinkage accumulation and reduction in saturated hydraulic conductivity(k sat).On the other hand,CWD under CV conditions caused a reduction of swell pressure while has almost no impact on k sat.An elastic response to CWD was achieved after the third cycle for saturated hydraulic conductivity(k sat),the third to fourth cycle for the volume change potential under the CV conditions, and the fourth to fifth cycle for the volume change potential under the CS conditions. Finally, both swell pressure(s s)and saturated hydraulic conductivity(k sat)are not fundamental parameters of the expansive soil but rather depend on stress, boundary and wetting conditions.

文摘Independence among leaf economics, leaf hydraulics and leaf size confers plants great capability in adapting to heterogeneous environments. However,it remains unclear whether the independence of the leaf traits revealed across species still holds within species, especially under stressed conditions. Here,a suite of traits in these dimensions were measured in leaves and roots of a typical mangrove species,Ceriops tagal, which grows in habitats with a similar sunny and hot environment but different soil salinity in southern China.Compared with C.tagal under low soil salinity,C.tagal under high soil salinity had lower photosynthetic capacity,as indicated directly by a lower leaf nitrogen concentration and higher water use efficiency, and indirectly by a higher investment in defense function and thinner palisade tissue;had lower water transport capacity,as evidenced by thinner leaf minor veins and thinner root vessels;and also had much smaller single leaf area.Leaf economics, hydraulics and leaf size of the mangrove species appear to be coordinated as one trait dimension, which likely stemmed from covariation of soil water and nutrient availability along the salinity gradient. The intraspecific leaf trait relationship under a stressful environment is insightful for our understanding of plant adaption to the multifarious environments.

文摘Persistent and severe drought induced by global climate change causes tree mortality mainly due to the hydraulic imbalance of conduit systems, but the magnitude of injury may be species dependent.A water-exclusion experiment was carried out on seedlings of two tree species with distinct characteristics,i.e.,Fraxinus mandshurica and Larix gmelinii to examine hydraulic responses of leaf, stem, and root to drought stress. The two species displayed different hydraulic strategies and related traits in response to drought stress.L.gmelinii reduced its leaf hydraulic conductance by quick stomatal closure and a slow decline in leaf water potential, with a more isohydric stomatal regulation to maintain its water status. In contrast,F.mandshurica was more anisohydric with a negative stomatal safety margin, exhibiting strong resistance to embolism in stem and leafstem segmentation of hydraulic vulnerability to preserve the hydraulic integrity of stem. These differences in hydraulic behaviors and traits between the two species in response to drought stress provide a potential mechanism for their coexistence in temperate forests, including which in the forest modeling would improve our prediction of tree growth and distribution under future climate change.
文摘The paper discusses minimizing the effect of external mechanical vibration on hydraulic valves in different military hydraulic drive systems. The current research work presents an analysis of the potential to reduce vibration on the valve casing by installing a valve flexibly on a vibrating surface,i.e.,by introducing a material with known stiffness and damping characteristics between the valve casing and the vibrating surface-a steel spring package or special cushions made of elastomer material or of oilresistant rubber. The article also demonstrates that elastomer cushions placed inside the valve casingbetween the casing and the centering springs-can be used as a supplementary or alternative solution in the analyzed method for mitigating the transfer of vibrations.By using materials with appropriately selected elastic and dissipative properties, the effectiveness of vibro-isolation can be increased. The presented theoretical analyzes by linear and non-linear mathematical models have been verified experimentally.

文摘Unconventional resources like shale gas has been the focus of intense research and development for two decades. These findings provide important references for hydraulic fracturing design in shale reservoirs.

文摘Drilling speed and associated analyses from factual field data of hydraulic rotary drilling have not been fully utilized. The paper provides the reference and comparison for the utilization of drilling information from two adjacent vertical drillholes that were formed with the same hydraulic rotary drilling machine and bit.The analysis of original factual data is presented to obtain the constant drilling speed during net drilling process.According to the factual data along two adjacent drillholes, the digitalization results respectively include 461 linear zones and 210 linear zones with their constant drilling speeds and associated drilling parameters. The digitalization results can accurately present the spatial distributions and interface boundaries of drilled geomaterials and the results are consistent with the paralleled site loggings. The weighted average drilling speeds from 2.335 m/min to 0.044 m/min represent 13 types of drilled geomaterials from soils to hard rocks. The quantitative relation between drilling speed and strength property is provided. The digitalization results can statistically profile the basic strength quality grades of III to VI from soils to hard rocks. The thickness distributions of four strength quality grades are presented for each individual type of geomaterials along two drillholes. In total,50.2%of geomaterials from drillhole A are grade IV and 57.4%of geomaterials from drillhole B are grade III.The digitalization results can offer an accurate and cost-effective tool to quantitatively describe the spatial distribution and in situ strength profile of drilled geomaterials in the current drilling projects.

文摘Hydraulic servo system plays an important role in industrial fields due to the advantages of high response, small size-to-power ratio and large driving force. However, inherent nonlinear behaviors and modeling uncertainties are the main obstacles for hydraulic servo system to achieve high tracking perfor-mance.To deal with these difficulties, this paper presents a backstepping sliding mode controller to improve the dynamic tracking performance and anti-interfer-ence ability. For this purpose, the nonlinear dynamic model is firstly established, where the nonlinear behaviors and modeling uncertainties are lumped as one term. Then, the extended state observer is introduced to estimate the lumped distur-bance.The system stability is proved by using the Lyapunov stability theorem. Finally, comparative simulation and experimental are conducted on a hydraulic servo system platform to verify the efficiency of the proposed control scheme.

文摘On 2019-03-04,the largest induced earthquake(ML4.18)occurred in the East Shale Basin,Alberta, and the underlying physical mechanisms have not been fully understood. This paper proposes a synthetical geoengineering methodology to comprehensively characterize this earthquake caused by hydraulic fracturing.Based on 3D structural, petrophysical, and geomechanical models,an unconventional fracture model is constructed by considering the stress shadow between adjacent hydraulic fractures and the interactions between hydraulic and natural fractures.Coupled poroelastic simulations are conducted to reveal the triggering mechanisms of induced seismicity. It is found that four vertical basement-rooted faults were identified via focal mechanisms analysis. The brittleness index(BI)along two horizontal wells has a high magnitude(BI>0.5),indicating the potential susceptibility of rock brittleness.Due to the presence of overpressure,pre-existing faults in the Duvernay Formation are highly susceptible to fault reactivation. The occurrence of the earthquake clusters has been attributed to the fracturing fluid injection during the west 38^(th)-39^(th) stage and east 38^(th) stage completions.Rock brittleness, formation overpressure, and large fracturing job size account for the nucleation of earthquake clusters, and unconventional natural-hydraulic fracture networks provide fluid flow pathways to cause fault reactivation. This workflow can be used to mitigate potential seismic risks in unconventional reservoirs in other fields.
