The aim of the study was to determine the harmfulness of leaf miners and their species composition on winter wheat for the improvement of methods to control them. In order to determine the dates of the treatments, it was necessary to catch adult flies. The researchers used yellow 25 x 40 cm sticky traps placed on three control plots to catch the adults. Monitoring of cereal leaf miners flights in winter wheat was carried out in Babor6wko (greater Poland voivodeship). Yellow traps were placed above the tops of wheat during vegetation period. The number of damaged wheat stems was recorded. Fluctuations in weather conditions during the research affected the dynamics of leaf miner flies considerably. The maximum flights of leaf miner flies on winter wheat crops in years of the studies took place in May. The dynamics of leaf miners flights were different in growing season 2008 and 2009. The most common species were: Chromatomyia nigra (Ztt.), Chromatomyia fuscula (Ztt.) and Poemyza superciliosa (Ztt.). It was also discovered that the species composition of Agromyzidae damaging the winter wheat, changes in particular years. The results differ from the results of the previous research, which the dominant species were Phytomyza nigra (Mg.) and Agromyza ambiqua (FII.). 展开更多

The oil palm leaf miner, Coelaenomenodera lameensis, is currently the most destructive pest of oil palm in Ghana and other African oil palm growing countries, causing significant losses in fresh fruit bunch yield. Progressive pruning is an oil palm pruning method in which pruning is done at the same time as fresh fruit bunch harvesting. This study evaluated the impact of progressive pruning on leaf miner population in oil palm and how these two factors (leaf miner and progressive pruning) affect the yield of oil palm at the Benso Oil Palm Plantation Public listed company (BOPP. Plc). Five distinct blocks in the plantation were selected for observations on fronds at various ranks (33, 25, or 17) based on the degree of defoliation by counting the number of pests on leaflets at different phases of insect development. Fronds from selected plots were sampled in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The size of plots used for the study ranged between 19 to 45 hectares. A minimum of 78 fronds were evenly cut from each block for pest count depending on the block size. Secondary data on annual yields of fresh fruit bunches before and after the introduction of progressive pruning were also obtained from BOPP. Plc records from 2011-2020. The results from the analyzed data on leaf miner index before and after the introduction of progressive pruning showed that progressive pruning has, to a high extent (64% to 36%), reduced leaf miner populations in the plantation. Paired t-test on fresh fruit bunch yield has also revealed a significant (p < 0.001) increase in annual fresh fruit bunch yield due to progressive pruning. A regression analysis, however, revealed a lower rate of yield loss (3.05 to 2.70 tonnes) to leaf miner infestation after the introduction of progressive pruning. The study recommends progressive pruning as a key cultural practice for improving crop yields in leaf miner prone plantations. 展开更多

Olive productivity should be improved through stimulating nutrition, particularly under poor fertility soils.Consequently, the objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of applying organic and bio-fertilizers on the physiological growth, yield and fruit quality of olive trees under newly reclaimed poor-fertility sandy soil in an arid environment.During a field experiment carried out at El-Qantara,North Sinai,Egypt over two consecutive seasons(2019-2020 and 2020-2021),olive Kalamata trees were evaluated under three organic fertilizer treatments alone or in combination with three bio-fertilizers treatments.Organic fertilizer was applied as goat manure(16.8 kg/tree/year),or olive pomace(8.5 kg/tree/year)in mid-December of each season vs.untreated trees. The bio-fertilizers were applied as N-fixing bacteria(150 g/tree)was inculated in early March of each season,or amino acid mixture(1.5%)was applied three times,at 70%of full bloom,21 days after full bloom, and a month later in comparison to a non-fertilized trees(control). The cultivar used was Kalamata,a dual-purpose cultivar for oil and table olives whose value increases when processed as table olives. The results indicated that the goat manure followed by olive pomace significantly enhanced photosynthetic pigments(chlorophyll a,b,and carotenoids),leaf mineral contents(N,P,K,Ca,Mg and Fe),tree canopy volume, number of flowers per inflorescence, number of inflorescences per shoot, initial fruit set, fruit retention. For fruit quality, fruit length and width, fruit weight, and total fruit yield was increased compared to the non-fertilized control.Likewise,The bio-fertilizer N-fixing bacteria followed by the amino acid mixture significantly improved all of the aforementioned parameters.Accordingly,it is recommended, both environmentally and economically to utilize organic and bio-fertizers,particularly goat manure combined with N-fixing bacteria,in low-fertility soil to sustain olive production as well as reducing mineral fertilization. 展开更多

In this study, the effects of different types of nethouses viz., NH1, NH2, and NH3, were investigated at the research farm of the Olericulture Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) from Sep 2021 to Mar 2022 and compared to control (open field) in terms of the incidence of white fly, aphid, leaf miners, mites, and eggplant shoot and fruit borer (ESFB). This study included six vegetables 1) Tomato, 2) Eggplant, 3) Sweet pepper, 4) Broccoli, 5) Cucumber;6) Okra, as well as four nethouse treatments: 1) UV stabilized transparent polyethylene film with 60 mesh insect net along with green shade net (NH1);2) UV stabilized transparent polyethylene film with 60 mesh insect net (NH2);3) 60 mesh insect net (NH3);4) Open field infestation of white fly, aphid, leaf miners, mites, and ESFB was observed under open field conditions followed by NH1 conditions, while the lower infestation was observed in NH2 and NH3 for all vegetables. From the study, we found the use of stabilized transparent polyethylene film with a 60 mesh insect nethouse provided a negative effect on the presence of different types of notorious insects on vegetables. So, this type of protected nethouse will provide a new dimension to producing safe and quality vegetables in Bangladesh. 展开更多

The study was conducted with 75 tomato entries at the farm of Olericulture Division, Horticulture Research Centre (HRC), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur, Bangladesh during the winter season of 2020-21 to evaluate insect and disease reaction. Among the various insect and diseases of tomatoes, the late blight, TYLCV, bacterial wilt infection and leaf miner, fruit borer infestation are most common in Bangladesh. The TYLCV infection was observed 0% to 27% infection, while 47 entries showed zero percent infection. The range of bacterial wilt infection was 0% to 10% and zero percent infection was observed in 62 entries. In case of leaf miner infestation and fruit borer infestation, the range was 0% to 43% and 0% to 10%, respectively. Considering tolerance to late blight, TYLCV, bacterial wilt infection and leaf miner, fruit borer infestation, fruit size, fruit shape, plant growth nature, cluster nature of fruit, type of fruit ten entries AVTO 1010, AVTO 1706, AVTO 1713, AVTO 1829, AVTO 1909, AVTO 1911, AVTO 1915, AVTO 1921, AVTO 1954 and SLA 011 were found zero percent late blight, TYLCV, bacterial wilt infection and leaf miner, fruit borer infestation. So, these ten entries can be selected for disease and insect tolerant tomato varieties development as well as developing disease and insect tolerant hybrid tomato varieties. 展开更多

In nature, insects concurrently face multiple environmental stressors,a sce-nario likely increasing with climate change.Integrated stress resistance(ISR)thus often improves fitness and could drive invasiveness, but how physiological mechanisms influ-ence invasion has lacked examination. Here,we investigated cross-tolerance to abiotic stress factors which may influence range limits in the South American tomato pinworm a global invader that is an ecologically and socially damaging crop pest.Specifically,we tested the effects of prior rapid cold-and heat-hardening(RCH and RHH),fasting, and desiccation on cold and heat tolerance traits,as well as starvation and desiccation sur-vivability between T.absoluta life stages.Acclimation effects on critical thermal minima(CT_(min))and maxima(CT_(max))were inconsistent, showing significantly deleterious effects of RCH on adult CT_(max) and CT_(min) and, conversely, beneficial acclimation effects of RCH on larval CT_(min).While no beneficial effects of desiccation acclimation were recorded for desiccation tolerance, fasted individuals had significantly higher survival in adults, whereas fasting negatively affected larval tolerances.Furthermore, fasted and desiccation acclimated adults had significantly higher starvation tolerance, showing strong evidence for cross-tolerance.Our results show context-dependent ISR traits that may promote T.absoluta fitness and competitiveness.Given the frequent overlapping occurrence of these divergent stressors,ISR reported here may thus partly elucidate the observed rapid global spread of T.absoluta into more stressful environments than expected. This information is vital in determining the underpinnings of multistressor responses, which are fundamental in forecasting species responses to changing environments and management responses. 展开更多
