If one cannot manage the relationship between justice and injustice; particularly, if a ruler always thinks the justice should serve him but forgets he should as well obey the social disciplines; balance justice and injustice, this ruler will destroy his country. Only After a violent journey, Lear recognizes that he has misused justice and he bears responsibility for both his own problems and for those of others who suffers equally. He has learned that no one is above justice. The whole process makes Lear regret and remorse, which at the same time combines his justice and injustice.展开更多

In no case can such a change in our outlook yield more illuminating results than a serious look at the 1608 Quarto version of Shakespeare's King Lear. The 1623 Folio version and the "conflated" modem editions, which combine the "best" readings of the Quarto and Folio versions, both anoint his godson Edgar, the Earl of Gloucester, as the new king at the end. However, the 1608 Quarto version elevates, not Edgar, but Lear's son-in-law, the Duke of Albany, to the kingship at the end. Shakespeare may be telling the same story in texts that seem strikingly similar, but the difference in the endings shifts the center of gravity in both plays, requiring an interpretation that makes sense out this difference. The title page of the 1608 Quarto version of King Lear describes it as a "history"; yet this "same" King Lear is listed as a "tragedy" in the 1623 Folio. The difference between those two words is the key to why Shakespeare's two versions could have startlingly different outcomes.展开更多

The Lear story goes through many retellings, among which Jane Smiley's A Thousand Acres proves to be a successful one. Though exhibited from different perspectives, the two stories have something in common the ironies arising from father-daughter conflicts. In the way of an intertextual comparison, the paper analyzes the ironies from father-daughter conflicts with an aim of digging out deep meaning from behind in a new angle. It f'mds out that the ironies shared by the two works help to increase the tragic atmosphere and reveal a lot of truths underneath the lines.展开更多

In this performance, he alternately performs 10 male and female characters including himself injingju role types ofsheng (male), dan (female),jing (painted face), mo, and chou (clown) in search 0f dual identities. This paper will investigate Wu's performance in Lear Is Here from three directions: First, how Wu subtly combines Shakespearean dramatic tension and psychological complex, his versatilejingju performing styles, and Brechtian alienation effect in developing his unique artistic flair? What are at stake of such an eclectic performance? Second, in the rooting and re-routing of both Shakespearean plays andjingju acting style where Wu Hsing-kuo meets King Lear, how Wu articulates the meticulous details of both source culture and target culture while at once extracting them out of context to interweave and re-articulate them into an eclectic intercultural theater? Third, investigating the cultural exchange, bicroleurs, audience reception, and production mode of the work, the author will try to do away with the "authenticity" or "representativeness" of either the East or the West, but explore the possibilities of the hybrid theater in search of alternative aesthetic and emerging performance genre展开更多
