OBJECTIVE:To analyze clinical studies on correlations between Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)body constitution types and diseases published in the past 10 years, and to provide an evidence base to support the use of such correlations for health maintenance and disease prevention.METHODS:We searched five databases for the period April 2009 to December 2019:China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database,Wanfang Database,China Science and Technology Journal Database,PubMed and Embase.Three types of observational studies on correlation between constitution types and diseases were included:cross-sectional,case-control and cohort studies.Descriptive statistical methods were employed for data analysis.RESULTS:A total of 1639 clinical studies were identified:1452(88.59%)cross-sectional studies,115(7.02%)case-control studies and 72(4.39%)cohort studies covering 30 regions of China and five other countries(Malaysia,South Korea,Singapore,Thailand and France). The collection of studies comprised 19 disease categories and 333 different diseases. The 10 most commonly studied diseases were hypertension, diabetes, stroke, coronary atherosclerotic heart disease(CAHD),sleep disorders, neoplasm of the breast, dysmenorrhea, fatty liver disease, chronic viral hepatitis B and dyslipidemia. We found high distributions for each biased constitution type in different patient populations as follows:Qi-deficiency constitution in stroke, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and hypertension;Yang-deficiency constitution in female infertility, osteoporosis, irritable bowel syndrome, gonarthrosis and dysmenorrhea;Yin-deficiency constitution in hypertension, diabetes, constipation, female climacteric states and osteoporosis;phlegm-dampness constitution in hypertension, stroke, fatty liver disease, diabetes and metabolic syndrome;damp-heat constitution in acne, chronic gastritis, chronic viral hepatitis B,human papillomavirus infection and hyperuricemia;blood-stasis constitution in CAHD,endometriosis and stroke;Qi-stagnation constitution in hyperplasia and neoplasms of the breast, insomnia, depression and thyroid nodules;and inherited-special constitution in asthma and allergic rhinitis.CONCLUSION:Eight biased TCM constitutions were closely related to specific diseases, and could be used to guide individualized prevention and treatment.More rigorously designed studies are recommended to further verify the constitution-disease relationship. 展开更多

Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)has been extensively used as a mainstay for treating various pathologies.Combing the pharmacology and systems biology approaches, the network pharmacology(NP)approach was developed to predict the probable mechanism underlying the therapeutic effect of TCM.However, approaches solely based on NP cannot effectively elucidate the curative mechanism in a holistic and reliable manner due to limitations in NP-based methods and complexity of TCM components. Thus, integration strategies combining NP with other approaches are increasingly being used.Since the interdisciplinary research in TCM has received much attention in the advent of the big data era of which the NPbased integration strategy is broadly used, the strategy is clearly elaborated in the present review. We summarized several NP-based integration strategies and their applications in TCM studies, including multi-omics approach, gut microbiota study, chemical information analysis,data-mining,and network toxicology study. 展开更多

OBJECTIVE:To explore the advantages of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)in"prevention"and"control"of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic.METHODS:In this paper,we wish to estimate the effect on the virus transmission of scenarios assuming TCM were used to build the first defense line at the very early stage of the spread in Wuhan. We therefore first developed a classic susceptible infected removed(susceptible infected removed,SIR)transmission model based on the national data in China and then updated it to a TCM-SIR model to assess the potential impact of such assumptions,i.e.the underlying risk of lives lost and social economy loss.RESULTS:(a)With the nationwide community lockdown, the risk value was from 90000 to 250000 without TCM intervention and the risk value was from 70000 to 220000 with TCM intervention;(b)Based the risk assessment method,we forecasted that the infections peak would be 58016 without TCM intervention, which happened on February 172020.However,the infections peak would be 45713 with TCM intervention, which happened on 16 February 2020.CONCLUSIONS:The adoption of nationwide community lockdown is conducive to timely control the epidemic and protect people’s lives and safety. At the same time,we can get lower infections if TCM intervention can be considered. We can also get the benefits from TCM prevention of COVID-19 pandemic by the basic number of infections. 展开更多

OBJECTIVE:To investigate the efficacy on the combination of oral strontium ranelate(Sr R)with a topical Chinese herbal paste on facilitation of fracture healing.METHODS:An open fracture was created at the mid-shaft of the right tibia of rat.A herbal pastecalled CDR containing Honghua(Flos Carthami),Chuanxuduan(Radix Dipsaci Asperoidis)and Dahuang(Radix Et Rhizoma Rhei Palmati)was prepared. The rats were treated with either CDR topically on the fracture site,or Sr R orally,or their combinations.Bone turnover biochemical markers in serum were measured.Microarchitecture of the fracture was analyzed using micro-CT after 14 and 28 d,followed by histomorphometrical analysis.RESULTS:Micro-computed tomography analysis revealed that the combined treatment of CDR with600 mg/g Sr R significantly increased the total callus density, mineralized callus volume fraction, mineralized callus mineral content and mineralized callus density of the callus after 28 d of treatment. This result was consistent with the histomorphometrical analysis on the osteoid volume.Analysis of biochemical markers showed that the combined treatments reduced the bone resorption that occurs temporarily after fracture.CONCLUSION:This study demonstrated that the combined treatment of oral Sr R and topical CDR is effective to promote fracture healing by their additive effect on promoting bone formation and retarding bone resorption. 展开更多

The methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)’s diagnosis and treatment have undergone several changes. It is crucial to build a proper model which is capable to modernize TCM into a both standardized and individualized treatment.Tong xiao-lin proposed the state-target strategy to build a bridge for the integration of Chinese and Western medicine. It is a model based on modern medical disease concepts and using the method of TCM to balance the pathological states and adopting the achievements of pharmacology of Chinese medicine to focus on the disease targets, symptom targets, and biochemical indicator targets. The reconstruction of TCM diagnosis and treatment system for diabetes is a good example to demonstrate this theory. It could improve the clinical efficacy, support the scientific research, and reinforce the standardization of TCM. 展开更多

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationships between different lifestyle-behavioral factors and phlegm wetness type of Traditional Chinese Medicine constitution,so as to provide health management strategies for phlegm-wetness constitution.METHODS: A case-control study was conducted with the cases selected from the database of Chinese constitution survey in 9 provinces or municipalities of China. 1380 cases met the diagnostic criteria of phlegm-wetness type were taken as the case group, and 1380 cases were randomly selected from gentleness type as the control group. Using Chi-square test to compare the differences of lifestyle-behavior composition in each group; single factor and multiple logistic regression analysis were used to compare the relationships of life-style-behavioral factors and phlegm-wetness type.RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences between phlegm-wetness type group and gentleness type group in lifestyle behaviors(dietary habits, tobacco and liquor consumptions, exercise habits, sleeping habits). The results of single factor logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the risk of phlegm-wetness constitution decreased significantly in light diet(odds ratio, OR=0.68);The risk factors of phlegm-wetness type were fatty food intake(OR=2.36), sleeping early and getting up late(OR=1.87), tobacco smoking(OR=1.83),barbecued food intake(OR=1.68), alcohol drinking(OR=1.63), salty food intake(OR=1.44), sleeping erratically(OR=1.43), less physical activities(OR=1.42), sweet food intake(OR=1.29), sleeping and getting up late(OR=1.26), and pungent food intake(OR=1.21), respectively. Regardless of the interaction among lifestyle-behavioral factors, the results of the multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that the risk factors of phlegm-wetness type were sleeping early and getting up late(OR=1.94), fatty food intake(OR=1.80), tobacco smoking(OR=1.50),sleeping erratically(OR=1.50), barbecued food intake(OR=1.40), sleeping and getting up late(OR=1.40), less physical activities(OR=1.31), sleeping late and getting up early(OR=1.27),and sweet food intake(OR=1.27), respectively, and the risk ofphlegm-wetness type still decreased significantly inlightfoodintake(OR=0.79).CONCLUSION: Light diet can decrease the risk of being phlegm-wetness constitution, and bad lifestyle behaviors such as sleeping early and getting up late, sleeping erratically, fatty food, barbecued food or sweet food intake, tobacco and liquor consumptions, and less physical activities can increase the risks of becoming phlegm-wetness constitution. 展开更多

Objective: To introduce a new method using calcium phosphate cement/Danshen drug delivery system for treating ischemic necrosis of the femoral head and evaluate its curative effect. Methods: From May 2000 to June 2005, 48 adult patients (54 hips) with ischemic necrosis of the femoral head at Stages Ⅰ,Ⅱ and Ⅲ of antigen reactive cell opsonization (ARCO) were treated with implantation of calcium phosphate cement/Danshen drug delivery system in the involved femoral head. The operation consisted of removal of the necrotic bone under weight-loading cartilage and the implantation of phosphate cement/Danshen drug delivery system, and all manipulations were made percutaneously through a bone tunnel in the trochanter. The functions of the hip joint were evaluated and X-ray films were taken preoperatively and postoperatively. Results: Postoperative follow-up was 45.5 months on average, ranging from 27 to 78 months. According to the evaluation criterion of "Dandong 1995" for therapeutic effect of adult ischemic necrosis of the femoral head, the therapeutic effects were excellent in 33 hips, good in 17, fair in 3 and poor in 1, with the excellent and good rate of 92.6 %.Conclusions: This method is relatively simple with little invasion. It not only improves the microcirculation of the femoral head by local application of traditional Chinese medicine, but also provides mechanic buttress in the weightloading area to prevent collapse during repairing, which is beneficial to repair and reconstruction of femoral head. It may be a choice of minimal invasion surgery for ischemic necrosis of the femoral head at Stages Ⅰ, Ⅱ and Ⅲ of ARCO. 展开更多
