UiO-66 owns tunable attachment sites and strong binding affinity, making itself an efficient defluorination agent to suppress the undesirable reactions caused by fluorine species. Besides, it can also relieve TMs dissolution and block the migration of TMs toward anode side since it’s a multifarious metal ions adsorbent, realizing both cathode and anode interface protection. Benefiting from these advantages, the UiO-66 assistant Ni-rich cathode achieves superior cycling stability. Particularly in full cell, the positive effects of this multifunctional additive are more pronounced than in the half-cell, that is after 400 cycles at 2 C,the capacity retention has doubled with the addition of UiO-66. More broadly, this unique application of functional additive provides new insight into the degradation mechanism of layered cathode materials and offers a new avenue to develop high-energy density batteries.展开更多

文摘High nickel content worsens the thermal stability of layered cathodes for lithium-ion batteries, raising safety concerns for their applications.Thoroughly understanding the thermal failure process can offer valuable guidance for material optimization on thermal stability and new opportunities in monitoring battery thermal runaway(TR).Herein, this work comprehensively investigates the thermal failure process of a single-crystal nickel-rich layered cathode and finds that the latent thermal failure starts at∼120℃far below the TR temperature(225℃).During this stage of heat accumulation, sequential structure transition is revealed by atomic resolution electron microscopy, which follows the layered→cation mixing layered→LiMn_(2)O_(4)-type spinel→disordered spinel→rock salt. This progression occurs as a result of the continuous migration and densification of transition metal cations.Phase transition generates gaseous oxygen, initially confined within the isolated closed pores, thereby not showing any thermal failure phenomena at the macro-level.Increasing temperature leads to pore growth and coalescence, and eventually to the formation of open pores, causing oxygen gas release and weight loss, which are the typical TR features. We highlight that latent thermal instability occurs before the macro-level TR,suggesting that suppressing phase transitions caused by early thermal instability is a crucial direction for material optimization. Our findings can also be used for early warning of battery thermal runaway.

文摘LiNi_(x)Co_(y)Al_(z)O_(2)(NCA)cathode materials are drawing widespread attention, but the huge gap between the ideal and present cyclic stability still hinders their further commercial application, especially for the Ni-rich LiNi_(x)Co_(y)Al_(z)O_(2)(x>0.8,x+y+z=1)cathode material, which is owing to the structural degradation and particles'intrinsic fracture. To tackle the problems,Li_(0.5)La_(2)Al_(0.5)O_(4)in situ coated and Mn compensating doped multilayer LiNi_(0.82)Co_(0.14)Al_(0.04)O_(2)was prepared.XRD refinement indicates that La-Mn co-modifying could realize appropriate Li/Ni disorder degree.Calculated results and in situ XRD patterns reveal that the LLAO coating layer could effectively restrain crack in secondary particles benefited from the suppressed internal strain.AFM further improves as NCA-LM2 has superior mechanical property. The SEM,TEM,XPS tests indicate that the cycled cathode with LLAO-Mn modification displays a more complete morphology and less side reaction with electrolyte.DEMS was used to further investigate cathode-electrolyte interface which was reflected by gas evolution.NCA-LM2 releases less CO_(2)than NCA-P indexing on a more stable surface. The modified material presents outstanding capacity retention of 96.2%after 100 cycles in the voltage range of 3.0-4.4 V at 1C,13%higher than that of the pristine and 80.8%at 1 C after 300 cycles. This excellent electrochemical performance could be attributed to the fact that the high chemically stable coating layer of Li_(0.5)La_(2)Al_(0.5)O_(4)(LLAO)could enhance the interface and the Mn doping layer could suppress the influence of the lattice mismatch and distortion. We believe that it can be a useful strategy for the modification of Ni-rich cathode material and other advanced functional material.

文摘Na-ion O3-type layered oxides are prospective cathodes for Na-ion batteries due to high energy density and low-cost.Nevertheless,such cathodes usually suffer from phase transitions, sluggish kinetics and air instability, making it difficult to achieve high performance solid-state sodium-ion batteries.Herein, the high-entropy design and Li doping strategy alleviate lattice stress and enhance ionic conductivity, achieving high-rate performance, air stability and electrochemically thermal stability for Na_(0.95)Li_(0.06)Ni_(0.25)Cu_(0.05)Fe_(0.15)Mn_(0.49)O_(2).This cathode delivers a high reversible capacity(141 mAh g^(−1)at 0.2C),excellent rate capability(111 mAh g^(−1)at 8C,85 mAh g^(−1)even at 20C),and long-term stability(over 85%capacity retention after 1000 cycles),which is attributed to a rapid and reversible O3–P3 phase transition in regions of low voltage and suppresses phase transition. Moreover, the compound remains unchanged over seven days and keeps thermal stability until 279℃.Remarkably,the polymer solid-state sodium battery assembled by this cathode provides a capacity of 92 mAh g^(−1)at 5C and keeps retention of 96%after 400 cycles. This strategy inspires more rational designs and could be applied to a series of O3 cathodes to improve the performance of solid-state Na-ion batteries.

文摘Energy-storage systems and their production have attracted significant interest for practical applications.Batteries are the foundation of sustainable energy sources for electric vehicles(EVs),portable electronic devices(PEDs),etc. In recent decades,Lithium-ion batteries(LIBs) have been extensively utilized in largescale energy storage devices owing to their long cycle life and high energy density. However, the high cost and limited availability of Li are the two main obstacles for LIBs.In this regard,sodium-ion batteries(SIBs) are attractive alternatives to LIBs for large-scale energy storage systems because of the abundance and low cost of sodium materials.Cathode is one of the most important components in the battery, which limits cost and performance of a battery.Among the classified cathode structures, layered structure materials have attracted attention because of their high ionic conductivity, fast diffusion rate, and high specific capacity. Here,we present a comprehensive review of the classification of layered structures and the preparation of layered materials.Furthermore, the review article discusses extensively about the issues of the layered materials,namely(1) electrochemical degradation,(2) irreversible structural changes,and(3) structural instability, and also it provides strategies to overcome the issues such as elemental phase composition,a small amount of elemental doping, structural design, and surface alteration for emerging SIBs.In addition, the article discusses about the recent research development on layered unary, binary, ternary, quaternary, quinary, and senary-based O3-and P2-type cathode materials for high-energy SIBs.This review article provides useful information for the development of high-energy layered sodium transition metal oxide P2 and O3-cathode materials for practical SIBs.

文摘This study explores the impact of introducing vacancy in the transition metal layer of rationally designed Na_(0.6)[Ni_(0.3)Ru_(0.3)Mn_(0.4)]O_(2)(NRM)cathode material. The incorporation of Ru,Ni,and vacancy enhances the structural stability during extensive cycling, increases the operation voltage, and induces a capacity increase while also activating oxygen redox, respectively,in Na_(0.7)[Ni_(0.2)V_(Ni0.1)Ru_(0.3)Mn_(0.4)]O_(2)(V-NRM)compound.Various analytical techniques including transmission electron microscopy,X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy, operando X-ray diffraction, and operando differential electrochemical mass spectrometry are employed to assess changes in the average oxidation states and structural distortions. The results demonstrate that V-NRM exhibits higher capacity than NRM and maintains a moderate capacity retention of 81%after 100 cycles.Furthermore, the formation of additional lone-pair electrons in the O 2p orbital enables V-NRM to utilize more capacity from the oxygen redox validated by density functional calculation, leading to a widened dominance of the OP4 phase without releasing O_(2) gas. These findings offer valuable insights for the design of advanced high-capacity cathode materials with improved performance and sustainability in sodium-ion batteries.

文摘Nickel-manganese binary layered oxides with high working potential and low cost are potential candidates for sodium-ion batteries, but their electrochemical properties are highly related to compositional diversity.Diverse composite materials with various phase structures of P3,P2/P3,P2,P2/O3,and P2/P3/O3 were synthesized by manipulating the sodium content and calcination conditions, leading to the construction of a synthetic phase diagram for Na_(x)Ni_(0.25)Mn_(0.75)O_(2)(0.45≤x≤1.1).Then,we compared the electrochemical characteristics and structural evolution during the desodiation/sodiation process of P2,P2/P3,P2/03,and P2/P3/O3-Na_(x)Ni_(0.25)Mn_(0.75)O_(2).Among them,P2/P3-Na0.75Ni0.25Mn0.75O2exhibits the best rate capability of 90.9 mA h g^(-1)at 5 C,with an initial discharge capacity of 142.62 mA h g^(-1)at 0.1 C and a capacity retention rate of 78.25%after 100 cycles at 1 C in the voltage range of 2-4.3 V.The observed superior sodium storage performance of P2/P3 hybrids compared to other composite phases can be attributed to the enhanced Na^(+)transfer dynamic, reduction of the Jahn-teller effect, and improved reaction reversibility induced by the synergistic effect of P2 and P3 phases. The systematic research and exploration of phases in Na_(x)Ni_(0.25)Mn_(0.75)O_(2)provide new sights into high-performance nickel-manganese binary layered oxide for sodium-ion batteries.

文摘Layer-type LiNi0.9Mn0.1O2is promising to be the primary cathode material for lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)due to its excellent electrochemical performance.Unfortunately, the cathode with high nickel content suffers from severely detrimental structural transformation that causes rapid capacity attenuation.Herein,site-specific dual-doping with Fe and Mg ions is proposed to enhance the structural stability of LiNi0.9Mn0.1O2.The Fe3+dopants are inserted into transition metal sites(3b)and can favorably provide additional redox potential to compensate for charge and enhance the reversibility of anionic redox. The Mg ions are doped into the Li sites(3a)and serve as O_(2)^(-)-Mg^(2+)-O_(2)^(-)pillar to reinforce the electrostatic cohesion between the two adjacent transition-metal layers, which further suppress the cracking and the generation of harmful phase transitions, ultimately improving the cyclability. The theoretical calculations, including Bader charge and crystal orbital Hamilton populations(COHP)analyses, confirm that the doped Fe and Mg can form stable bonds with oxygen and the electrostatic repulsion of O_(2)^(-)-O_(2)^(-)can be effectively suppressed, which effectively mitigates oxygen anion loss at the high delithiation state. This dual-site doping strategy offers new avenues for understanding and regulating the crystalline oxygen redox and demonstrates significant potential for designing high-performance cobalt-free nickel-rich cathodes.

文摘Understanding the structural origin of the competition between oxygen 2p and transition-metal 3d orbitals in oxygen-redox(OR)layered oxides is eminently desirable for exploring reversible and high-energy-density Li/Na-ion cathodes. Here,we reveal the correlation between cationic ordering transition and OR degradation in ribbon-ordered P3-Na_(0.6)Li_(0.2)Mn_(0.8)O_(2) via in situ structural analysis.Comparing two different voltage windows, the OR capacity can be improved approximately twofold when suppressing the in-plane cationic ordering transition. We find that the intralayer cationic migration is promoted by electrochemical reduction from Mn^(4+)to Jahn–Teller Mn^(3+)and the concomitant NaO_(6) stacking transformation from triangular prisms to octahedra, resulting in the loss of ribbon ordering and electrochemical decay.First-principles calculations reveal that Mn^(4+)/Mn^(3+)charge ordering and alignment of the degenerate eg orbital induce lattice-level collective Jahn–Teller distortion, which favors intralayer Mn-ion migration and thereby accelerates OR degradation. These findings unravel the relationship between in-plane cationic ordering and OR reversibility and highlight the importance of superstructure protection for the rational design of reversible OR-active layered oxide cathodes.

文摘Advancing high-voltage stability of layered sodium-ion oxides represents a pivotal avenue for their progress in energy storage applications.Despite this,a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms underpinning their structural deterioration at elevated voltages remains insufficiently explored. In this study,we unveil a layer delamination phenomenon of Na_(0.67)Ni_(0.3)Mn_(0.7)O_(2)(NNM)within the 2.0-4.3 V voltage, attributed to considerable volumetric fluctuations along the c-axis and lattice oxygen reactions induced by the simultaneous Ni^(3+)/Ni^(4+)and anion redox reactions.By introducing Mg doping to diminished Ni-O antibonding, the anion oxidation-reduction reactions are effectively mitigated, and the structural integrity of the P2 phase remains firmly intact, safeguarding active sites and precluding the formation of novel interfaces. The Na_(0.67)Mg_(0.05)Ni_(0.25)Mn_(0.7)O_(2)(NMNM-5)exhibits a specific capacity of100.7 mA h g^(-1),signifying an 83%improvement compared to the NNM material within the voltage of2.0-4.3 V.This investigation underscores the intricate interplay between high-voltage stability and structural degradation mechanisms in layered sodium-ion oxides.

文摘Aqueous zinc-ion batteries(ZIBs)have shown great potential in the fields of wearable devices, consumer electronics, and electric vehicles due to their high level of safety, low cost, and multiple electron transfer. The layered cathode materials of ZIBs hold a stable structure during charge and discharge reactions owing to the ultrafast and straightforward(de)intercalation-type storage mechanism of Zn^(2+)ions in their tunable interlayer spacing and their abilities to accommodate other guest ions or molecules.Nevertheless, the challenges of inadequate energy density, dissolution of active materials, uncontrollable byproducts, increased internal pressure, and a large de-solvation penalty have been deemed an obstacle to the development of ZIBs.In this review, recent strategies on the structure regulation of layered materials for aqueous zinc-ion energy storage devices are systematically summarized. Finally, critical science challenges and future outlooks are proposed to guide and promote the development of advanced cathode materials for ZIBs.

文摘Due to a high energy density, layered transition-metal oxides have gained much attention as the promising sodium-ion batteries cathodes. However, they readily suffer from multiple phase transitions during the Na extraction process, resulting in large lattice strains which are the origin of cycledstructure degradations. Here,we demonstrate that the Na-storage lattice strains of layered oxides can be reduced by pushing charge transfer on anions(O^(2-)).Specifically,the designed O3-type Ru-based model compound, which shows an increased charge transfer on anions, displays retarded O3-P3-O1 multiple phase transitions and obviously reduced lattice strains upon cycling as directly revealed by a combination of ex situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy,in situ X-ray diffraction and geometric phase analysis.Meanwhile, the stable Na-storage lattice structure leads to a superior cycling stability with an excellent capacity retention of 84%and ultralow voltage decay of 0.2 mV/cycle after 300 cycles.More broadly, our work highlights an intrinsically structure-regulation strategy to enable a stable cycling structure of layered oxides meanwhile increasing the materials’redox activity and Nadiffusion kinetics.

文摘The rapid development of electric vehicles and portable energy storage systems demands improvements in the energy density and cost-effectiveness of lithium-ion batteries,a domain in which Lithium-rich layered cathode(LLO)materials inherently excel. However, these materials face practical challenges, such as low initial Coulombic efficiency, inferior cycle/rate performance, and voltage decline during cycling, which limit practical application. Our study introduces a surface multi-component integration strategy that incorporates oxygen vacancies into the pristine LLO material Li1.2Mn_(0.6)Ni_(0.2)O_(2).This process involves a brief citric acid treatment followed by calcination, aiming to explore rate-dependent degradation behavior. The induced surface oxygen vacancies can reduce surface oxygen partial pressure and diminish the generation of O_(2)and other highly reactive oxygen species on the surface, thereby facilitating the activation of Li ions trapped in tetrahedral sites while overcoming transport barriers.Additionally, the formation of a spinel-like phase with 3D Li+diffusion channels significantly improves Li^(+)diffusion kinetics and stabilizes the surface structure. The optimally modified sample boasts a discharge capacity of 299.5 mA h g^(-1)at a 0.1 C and 251.6 mA h g^(-1)at a 1 C during the initial activation cycle, with an impressive capacity of 222.1 mA h g^(-1)at a 5 C.Most notably,it retained nearly 70%of its capacity after 300 cycles at this elevated rate. This straightforward, effective, and highly viable modification strategy provides a crucial resolution for overcoming challenges associated with LLO materials, making them more suitable for practical application.

文摘Introducing high-valence Ta element is an essential strategy for addressing the structu ral deterioration of the Ni-rich LiNi_(1-x-y)Co_(x)Mn_(y)O_(2)(NCM)cathode,but the enlarged Li/Ni cation mixing leads to the inferior rate capability originating from the hindered Li~+migration.Note that the non-magnetic Ti~(4+)ion can suppress Li/Ni disorder by removing the magnetic frustration in the transition metal layer. However,it is still challenging to directionally design expected Ta/Ti dual-modification,resulting from the complexity of the elemental distribution and the uncertainty of in-situ formed coating compounds by introducing foreign elements.Herein,a LiTaO_3 grain boundary(GB)coating and bulk Ti-doping have been successfully achieved in LiNi_(0.834)Co_(0.11)Mn_(0.056)O_(2) cathode by thermodynamic guidance,in which the structural formation energy and interfacial binding energy are employed to predict the elemental diffusion discrepancy and thermodynamically stable coating compounds. Thanks to the coupling effect of strengthened structural/interfacial stability and improved Li~+diffusion kinetics by simultaneous bulk/GB engineering, the Ta/Ti-NCM cathode exhibits outstanding capacity retention, reaching 91.1%after 400 cycles at 1 C.This elaborate work contributes valuable insights into rational dual-modification engineering from a thermodynamic perspective for maximizing the electrochemical performances of NCM cathodes.

文摘The key to hindering the commercial application of Ni-rich layered cathode is its severe structural and interface degradation during the undesired phase transition(hexagonal to hexagonal(H2→H3)),degenerating from the build-up of mechanical strain and undesired parasitic reactions.Herein,a perovskite Li_(0.35)La_(0.55)TiO_(3)(LLTO)layer is built onto Ni-rich cathodes crystal to induce layered@spinel@perovskite heterostructure to solve the root cause of capacity fade.Intensive exploration based on structure characterizations,in situ X-ray diffraction techniques, and first-principles calculations demonstrate that such a unique heterostructure not only can improve the ability of the host structure to withstand the mechanical strain but also provides fast diffusion channels for lithium ions as well as provides a protective barrier against electrolyte corrosion.Impressively, the LLTO modified LiNi_(0.9)Co_(0.05)Mn_(0.05)O_(2)cathode manifests an unexpected cyclability with an extremely high-capacity retention of≈94.6%after 100 cycles, which is superior to the pristine LiNi_(0.9)Co_(0.05)Mn_(0.05)O_(2)(79.8%).Furthermore,this modified electrode also shows significantly enhanced cycling stability even withstanding a high cut-off voltage of 4.6 V.This surface self-reconstruction strategy provides deep insight into the structure/interface engineering to synergistically stabilize structure stability and regulate the physicochemical properties of Ni-rich cathodes, which will also unlock a new perspective of surface interface engineering for layered cathode materials.

文摘Developing single-crystalline Ni-rich cathodes is an effective strategy to improve the safety and cycle life of Li-ion batteries(LIBs).However, the easy-to-loss of Li and O in high-temperature lithiation results in unsatisfactory ordered layered structure and stoichiometry.Herein,we demonstrate the synthesis of highly-ordered and fully-stoichiometric single-crystalline LiNi_(0.83)Co_(0.12)Mn_(0.05)O_(2)(SC-NCM83)cathodes by the regulation of pre-lithiation kinetics. The well-balanced pre-lithiation kinetics have been proved to greatly improve the proportion of layered phase in the intermediate by inhibiting the formation of metastable spinel phase, which promoted the rapid transformation of the intermediate into highly-ordered layered SC-NCM83 in the subsequent lithiation process. After coating a layer of Li_(2)O–B_(2)O_(3),the resultant cathodes deliver superior cycling stability with 90.9%capacity retention at 1C after 300 cycles in pouch-type full batteries. The enhancement mechanism has also been clarified. These findings exhibit fundamental insights into the pre-lithiation kinetics process for guiding the synthesis of high-quality singlecrystalline Ni-rich cathodes.
