Objective This study aimed to evaluate the associations of serum folate and/or vitamin B12 concentrations with obesity among Chinese children and adolescents. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted including 3,079 Chinese children and adolescents, aged 6 to 17 years, from Jiangsu,China.Anthropometric indices, such as,children's body mass index(BMI),BMI z-scores,waist circumference, and waist-to-height ratio were utilized.Multivariable linear regression and generalized additive models were used to investigate the associations of serum folate and vitamin B12 levels with anthropometric indices and odds of obesity. Results We observed that serum vitamin B12 concentrations were inversely associated with all anthropometric indices and the odds of general obesity[odds ratio(OR)=0.68;95%confidence interval(CI)=0.59,0.78]and abdominal obesity(OR=0.68;95%CI=0.60,0.77).When compared to participants with both serum vitamin levels in the two middle quartiles, those with both serum folate and vitamin B12 levels in the highest quartile were less prone to general(OR=0.31,95%CI=0.19,0.50)or abdominal obesity(OR=0.46,95%CI=0.31,0.67).Conversely,participants with vitamin B12 levels in the lowest quartile alongside folate levels in the highest quartile had higher odds of abdominal obesity(OR=2.06,95%CI=1.09,3.91).Conclusion Higher serum vitamin B12 concentrations, but not serum folate concentrations, were associated with lower odds of childhood obesity.Children and adolescents with high levels of vitamin B12 and folate were less likely to be obese. 展开更多

Golden-flower fungus, the only dominant microorganism determining the Fu-brick tea quality through fermentation and the important microbe in Liupao tea,is considered a potential probiotic fungus based on its anti-obesity effect. However, the classification of golden-flower fungi is still controversial;the anti-obesity effect of golden-flower fungus polysaccharides remains unknown. In this study,we identify a golden-flower strain as Aspergillus cristatus based on morphological characteristics and multigene phylogeny analysis, which resolves the controversy of classification. Moreover,we find A.cristatus polysaccharides(ACPS)attenuate obesity in rats.ACPS modulate gut bacterial composition.in which Akkermansia,Akkermansia muciniphila,Bacteroides,Romboutsia,Blautia, and Desulfovibrio are considered the core microbes regulated by ACPS.ACPS increase fecal total short-chain fatty acid content and serum, hepatic, and fecal total bile acid content.Furthermore,ACPS-induced gut microbiota alteration plays a causal role in the protection from obesity, according to a fecal transplantation experiment. Thus,ACPS ameliorate obesity by regulating gut microbiota and gut microbiota-related metabolites. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Differences in the preoperative characteristics and weight loss outcomes after sleeve gastrectomy(SG)between patients with familial aggregation of obesity(FAO)and patients with sporadic obesity(SO)have not been elucidated.AIM To explore the impact of SG on weight loss and the alleviation of obesity-related comorbidities in individuals with FAO.METHODS A total of 193 patients with obesity who underwent SG were selected.Patients with FAO/SO were matched 1:1 by propensity score matching and were categorized into 4 groups based on the number of first-degree relatives with obesity(1 SO vs 1FAO,2SO vs 2FAO).The baseline characteristics, weight loss outcomes, prevalence of obesity-related comorbidities and incidence of major surgeryrelated complications were compared between groups.RESULTS We defined FAO as the presence of two or more first-degree relatives with obesity.Patients with FAO did not initially show significant differences in baseline data,short-term postoperative weight loss,or obesity-related comorbidities when compared to patients with SO preoperatively. However, distinctions between the two groups became evident at the two-year mark, with statistically significant differences in both percentage of total weight loss(P=0.006)and percentage of excess weight loss(P<0.001).The FAO group exhibited weaker remission of type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)(P=0.031),hyperlipidemia(P=0.012),and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)(P=0.003)as well as a lower incidence of acid reflux(P=0.038).CONCLUSION FAO patients is associated with decreased mid-to-long-term weight loss outcomes;the alleviation of T2DM,hyperlipidemia and NAFLD;and decreased incidence of acid reflux postoperatively. 展开更多

Akkermansia muciniphila play an important in ameliorating obesity but is not allowed for direct consumption in most countries. To date,microbiota-directed foods selectively promote the targeted human gut microbes, providing a strategy for A.muciniphila enhancement.Multiple studies have indicated the potential regulation of the polyphenol on A.muciniphila.Therefore,a polyphenol screening based on A.muciniphila upregulation was performed in mice.Chlorogenic acid(CGA)exhibited a greater response to A.muciniphila upregulation.Furthermore,we found that CGA did not directly promote A.muciniphila growth or mucin secretion.Microbiome and metabolomics revealed that the increased abundance of A.muciniphila resulted from the inhibition of CGA on Desulfovibrio and Alistipes and the influence of docosahexaenoic acid,β-hydroxybutyrate,and N-acetyl-lactosamine.Finally,to confirm the regulation of CGA on A.muciniphila under disease conditions,high-fat diet-fed mice were established. The results showed CGA promoted A.muciniphila growth, and we expectedly found that CGA suppressed the augment in body weight of mice, significantly attenuated adipose tissue abnormality, provided liver protection and improved gut barrier integrity. These results suggest that CGA inhibits the development of obesity.Overall, our results indicate that microbiota-directed food is a promising approach for the treatment of obesity. 展开更多

Obesity is associated with numerous metabolic disorders, and dietary polyphenols have been confirmed to have beneficial effects on the metabolism in obesity. However, the effect of 3-(3’,4’-dihydroxyphenyl)propanoic acid(DHPA)and 3’,4’-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid(DHAA),two main metabolites of dietary polyphenols,on obesity remains poorly understood. In this study,DHPA and DHAA were found to alleviate obesity,as well as regulate insulin resistance, lipid metabolism, and oxidative stress response in high-fat diet(HFD)mice.Surprisingly, the 16S rRNA sequencing and UHPLC-Q-TOF/MS demonstrated that DHPA and DHAA only slightly disturbed the intestinal microbiome, but significantly altered the urine metabolome of HFD mice mainly by regulating pentose and glucuronate interconversion, tyrosine metabolism, pentose phosphate and tricarboxylic acid(TCA)cycle as indicated by metabolic pathway analysis based on Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes(KEGG)database.Correlation analysis revealed that the differential metabolites are strongly associated with body weight, blood glucose, insulin level, and superoxide dismutase(SOD)enzyme activity. Our results revealed that DHPA and DHAA exert their anti-obesity effect by regulating important metabolites in the glucose, lipid and tyrosine metabolism pathways. 展开更多

Objective:To investigate the potential mechanism of Wendan decoction in obesity by screening target genes with promoter region methylation changes and constructing a multiple signaling pathways network based on promoter methylation. Methods:The methylation degree of Itgad,Col8a1,Adra2b,Jund,Rab2a,Wnt8b,Fzd9,B4galt7,Pik3cd,Creb1,Stard8,and Mmp1 in the abdominal adipose tissue of obese rats was determined using the Agena MassARRAY system.Western blot was performed to assess protein expression levels.Target genes were identified based on the methylation degree in the promoter region and protein expression.Enrichment analysis of signaling pathways was conducted to identify relevant target genes and obtain a multiple signaling pathway network associated with obesity.Core and terminal effector molecules in the pathway networks were selected as research targets for reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR)analysis.Results:Four genes(Adra2b,Creb1,Itgad,and Pik3cd)showed a degree of promoter methylation consistent with their respective protein expression levels.Among them,Adra2b,Creb1,and Pik3cd expression increased, while that of Itgad decreased.Enrichment analysis revealed that Creb1 and Pik3cd were involved in 6 signaling pathways related to obesity:tumor necrosis factor(TNF)signaling pathway, growth hormone synthesis/secretion and action, adenosine 5'-monophosphate-activated protein kinase(AMPK)signaling pathway, relaxin signaling pathway, cyclic nucleotide(cAMP)signaling pathway, and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B(PI3K/Akt)signaling pathway.Subsequently,a multiple signaling pathways network was constructed based on promoter methylation.Key molecules including protein kinase B(AKT),mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1(mTORC1),and unc-51 like autophagy activating kinase 1(ULK1),as well as terminal effector molecules interleukin-1β(IL-1β),interleukin-6(IL-6),and chemokine(C-X-C motif)ligand 2(CXCL2)were selected as research targets.Wendan decoction decreased the expressions of AKT,mTORC1,IL-1β,IL-6,and CXCL2 while up-regulating ULK1 expression. Conclusion:The mechanism of Wendan decoction in preventing obesity involves the regulation of multiple signaling pathways through the control of Creb1 and Pik3cd gene promoter methylation. However, the associated multi-path gene regulation mechanism in preventing obesity is complex. Thus, further exploration is needed to elucidate the role of methylation changes in this mechanism. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Obesity has become a serious public health issue, significantly elevating the risk of various complications. It is a well-established contributor to Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction(HFpEF).Evaluating HFpEF in obesity is crucial.Epicardial adipose tissue(EAT)has emerged as a valuable tool for validating prognostic biomarkers and guiding treatment targets.Hence, assessing EAT is of paramount importance.Cardiovascular magnetic resonance(CMR)imaging is acknowledged as the gold standard for analyzing cardiac function and mor-phology.We hope to use CMR to assess EAT as a bioimaging marker to evaluate HFpEF in obese patients.AIM To assess the diagnostic utility of CMR for evaluating heart failure with preserved ejection fraction[HFpEF;left ventricular(LV)ejection fraction≥50%]by measuring the epicardial adipose tissue(EAT)volumes and EAT mass in obese patients.METHODS Sixty-two obese patients were divided into two groups for a case-control study based on whether or not they had heart failure with HFpEF.The two groups were defined as HFpEF+and HFpEF-.LV geometry, global systolic function,EAT volumes and EAT mass of all subjects were obtained using cine magnetic resonance sequences.RESULTS Forty-five patients of HFpEF-group and seventeen patients of HFpEF+group were included.LV mass index(g/m2)of HFpEF+group was higher than HFpEF-group(P<0.05).In HFpEF+group,EAT volumes,EAT volume index,EAT mass,EAT mass index and the ratio of EAT/[left atrial(LA)left-right(LR)diameter]were higher compared to HFpEF-group(P<0.05).In multivariate analysis,Higher EAT/LA LR diameter ratio was associated with higher odds ratio of HFpEF.CONCLUSION EAT/LA LR diameter ratio is highly associated with HFpEF in obese patients. It is plausible that there may be utility in CMR for assessing obese patients for HFpEF using EAT/LA LR diameter ratio as a diagnostic biomarker.Further prospective studies, are needed to validate these proof-of-concept findings. 展开更多

BACKGROUND An association between cardiorespiratory fitness(CRF)and insulin resistance in obese adolescents, especially in those with various obesity categories, has not been systematically studied. There is a lack of knowledge about the effects of CRF on insulin resistance in severely obese adolescents, despite their continuous rise.AIM To investigate the association between CRF and insulin resistance in obese adolescents, with special emphasis on severely obese adolescents.METHODS We performed a prospective,cross-sectional study that included 200 pubertal adolescents,10 years to 18 years of age,who were referred to a tertiary care center due to obesity.According to body mass index(BMI),adolescents were classified as mildly obese(BMI 100% to 120% of the 95^(th)percentile for age and sex)or severely obese(BMI≥120% of the 95^(th)percentile for age and sex or≥35 kg/m^(2),whichever was lower).Participant body composition was assessed by bioelectrical impedance analysis.A homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance(HOMA-IR)was calculated.Maximal oxygen uptake(VO_(2)max)was determined from submaximal treadmill exercise test.CRF was expressed as VO_(2)max scaled by total body weight(TBW)(mL/min/kg TBW)or by fat free mass(FFM)(mL/min/kg FFM),and then categorized as poor, intermediate,or good, according to VO_(2)max terciles.Data were analyzed by statistical software package SPSS(IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows,Version 24.0).P<0.05 was considered statistically significant.RESULTS A weak negative correlation between CRF and HOMA-IR was found[Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient(rs)=-0.28,P<0.01 for CRF_(TBW);(r_(s))=-0.21,P<0.01 for CRF_(FFM)].One-way analysis of variance(ANOVA)revealed a significant main effect of CRF on HOMA-IR[F(2200)=6.840,P=0.001 for CRF_(TBW);F_((2200))=3.883,P=0.022 for CRF_(FFM)].Subsequent analyses showed that obese adolescents with poor CRF had higher HOMA-IR than obese adolescents with good CRF(P=0.001 for CRF_(TBW);P=0.018 for CRF_(FFM)).Two-way ANOVA with Bonferroni correction confirmed significant effect of interaction of CRF level and obesity category on HOMA-IR[F_((2200))=3.292,P=0.039 for CRF_(TBW)].Severely obese adolescents had higher HOMA-IR than those who were mildly obese, with either good or poor CRF.However,HOMA-IR did not differ between severely obese adolescents with good and mildly obese adolescents with poor CRF.CONCLUSION CRF is an important determinant of insulin resistance in obese adolescents, regardless of obesity category. Therefore,CRF assessment should be a part of diagnostic procedure, and its improvement should be a therapeutic goal. 展开更多

Obesity is a critical health condition that severely affects an individual’s quality of life andwell-being.The occurrence of obesity is strongly associated with extreme health conditions, such as cardiac diseases, diabetes, hypertension, and some types of cancer. Therefore,it is vital to avoid obesity and or reverse its occurrence.Incorporating healthy food habits and an active lifestyle can help to prevent obesity. In this regard, artificial intelligence(AI)can play an important role in estimating health conditions and detecting obesity and its types. This study aims to see obesity levels in adults by implementing AIenabled machine learning on a real-life dataset. This dataset is in the form of electronic health records(EHR)containing data on several aspects of daily living, such as dietary habits, physical conditions, and lifestyle variables for various participants with different health conditions(underweight, normal, overweight, and obesity type I,II and III),expressed in terms of a variety of features or parameters, such as physical condition, food intake, lifestyle and mode of transportation.Three classifiers,i.e.,eXtreme gradient boosting classifier(XGB),support vector machine(SVM),and artificial neural network(ANN),are implemented to detect the status of several conditions, including obesity types. The findings indicate that the proposed XGB-based system outperforms the existing obesity level estimation methods, achieving overall performance rates of 98.5%and 99.6%in the scenarios explored. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty(ESG) is an effective therapy for class Ⅰ-Ⅱ obesity, but there are knowledge gaps in the published literature about its implementation in patients with class Ⅲ obesity [body mass index(BMI) ≥ 40 kg/m2].AIM To evaluate the safety, clinical efficacy, and durability of ESG in adults with class Ⅲ obesity.METHODS This was a retrospective cohort study that used prospectively collected data on adults with BMI ≥ 40 kg/m2who underwent ESG and longitudinal lifestyle counseling at two centers with expertise in endobariatric therapies from May 2018-March 2022. The primary outcome was total body weight loss(TBWL) at 12 mo. Secondary outcomes included changes in TBWL, excess weight loss(EWL) and BMI at various time points up to 36 mo, clinical responder rates at 12 and 24 mo, and comorbidity improvement. Safety outcomes were reported through the study duration. One-way ANOVA test was performed with multiple Tukey pairwise comparisons for TBWL, EWL, and BMI over the study duration.RESULTS 404 consecutive patients(78.5% female, mean age 42.9 years, mean BMI 44.8 ± 4.7 kg/m2) were enrolled. ESGs were performed using an average of 7 sutures, over 42 ± 9 min, and with 100% technical success. TBWL was 20.9 ± 6.2% at 12 mo, 20.5 ± 6.9% at 24 mo, and 20.3 ± 9.5% at 36 mo. EWL was 49.6 ± 15.1% at 12 mo, 49.4 ± 16.7% at 24 mo, and 47.1 ± 23.5% at 36 mo. There was no difference in TBWL at 12, 15, 24, and 36 mo from ESG. TBWL exceeding 10%, 15%, and 20% was achieved by 96.7%, 87.4%, and 55.6% of the cohort at 12 mo, respectively. Of the cohort with the relevant comorbidity at time of ESG, 66.1% had improvement in hypertension, 61.7% had improvement in type Ⅱ diabetes, and 45.1% had improvement in hyperlipidemia over study duration. There was one instance of dehydration requiring hospitalization(0.2% serious adverse event rate).CONCLUSION When combined with longitudinal nutritional support, ESG induces effective and durable weight loss in adults with class Ⅲ obesity, with improvement in comorbidities and an acceptable safety profile. 展开更多

Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers and one of the most significant sources of cancer mortality. Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a particularly aggressive subtype that has proven difficult to treat with standard chemotherapies. Obesity has also been shown to exacerbate breast cancer, and diagnoses of these two diseases frequently overlap. Both conditions are regulated in part by the fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) demethylase, an RNA demethylase which may drive breast cancers through epigenetic alterations to gene expression. Methods of inhibiting FTO have been researched in vitro and in vivo as an alternative or adjunct to chemotherapies in multiple cancers, including breast cancer. Translating knowledge of the role of FTO in breast cancer and the development of novel agents may allow for improvements in the treatment of this refractory cancer. This review therefore aims to provide an overview of existing and developing chemical inhibitors of FTO that could be innovatively studied for the treatment of TNBC and associated comorbidity. 展开更多

Background: Obesity, especially central obesity, is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and type-2 diabetes, known for their significant morbidity and mortality. University students are at increased risk of obesity due to adoption of unhealthy lifestyles and school-related stress. However, there is scant information regarding the prevalence and risk factors of obesity among university students in Kenya. The study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with general and abdominal obesity among undergraduate students of The Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Kenya. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was employed among undergraduate students (n = 245) of The Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Nairobi. A systematic random sampling method was used to select the study participants. Lifestyle risk factors associated with obesity were collected using a structured questionnaire adopted from the WHO STEP-wise approach to non-communicable disease risk factor surveillance. Anthropometric measures of weight, height, and waist circumference were appropriately measured. The data were analyzed using SPSS software (ver: 22). The chi-square test of independence and binary logistic regression was used to establish an association between dependent and independent variables. Results: The prevalence of general and abdominal obesity was 19.6% and 27.8%, respectively. Risk factors of general obesity were age ≥ 20 years (OR, 9.95;95% CI, 3.09 - 32.08, p < 0.001), sedentary lifestyle (OR, 11.36;95% CI, 2.08 - 61.96, p = 0.005), staying with parents (OR, 3.22;95% CI, 1.09 - 9.58, p = 0.035), consumption of fast/processed foods (OR, 7.83;95% CI, 1.90 - 32.21, p = 0.004). Risk factors for abdominal obesity were being female (OR, 38.76;95% CI, 5.07 - 296.54, p < 0.001), staying with parents (OR, 3.02;95% CI, 1.14 - 7.99, p = 0.026) and sedentary lifestyle (OR, 6.55;95% CI, 1.80 - 23.81, p = 0.004). Conclusion: Being female, sedentary lifestyle, and consumption of fast/processed foods were found as predictors of obesity. Behavioural intervention is required to mitigate the burden of obesity among university students in Kenya. This can be achieved through promoting intervention programmes that lead to changing the built environment, counseling, and behavioral-lifestyle modification of students. 展开更多

The association between heavy metals in the blood and obesity has been examined in many studies. However, inconsistencies have been observed in the results of these studies. The present study was conducted using data from 119,181 participants of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES)for 11 years in 2005 and between 2008 and 2017.The subjects with missing heavy metal blood tests, health interview data, and health examination data were excluded from the study. The study population comprised 1,844 individuals(972 men,and 872 women)who were eligible for inclusion. It was found that obesity and abdominal obesity were associated with an increase in both blood mercury(P<0.001)and alanine aminotransferase(ALT)(P<0.001).After adjusting the confounding factors, those with concurrent high levels of ALT and the highest tertile of mercury showed an increased risk of obesity(odds ratio 4.46,95%confidence interval 2.23-8.90,P<0.001)as well as abdominal obesity(odds ratio 5.36,95%confidence interval 2.57-11.17,P<0.001).The interrelationship of mercury and ALT with the parameters of body mass index(P for interaction=0.009)and waist circumference(P for interaction=0.012),respectively,have been observed to be significant, suggesting that the reciprocal relationship could contribute to obesity and abdominal obesity. 展开更多

Obesity is one of the most serious global health problems, with an incidence that increases yearly and coincides with the development of cancer.Adipose tissue macrophages(ATMs)are particularly important in this context and contribute to linking obesity-related inflammation and tumor progression. However, the functions of ATMs on the progression of obesity-associated cancer remain unclear. In this review,we describe the origins, phenotypes, and functions of ATMs.Subsequently,we summarize the potential mechanisms on the reprogramming of ATMs in the obesity-associated microenvironment, including the direct exchange of dysfunctional metabolites, inordinate cytokines and other signaling mediators, transfer of extracellular vesicle cargo, and variations in the gut microbiota and its metabolites.A better understanding of the properties and functions of ATMs under conditions of obesity will lead to the development of new therapeutic interventions for obesity-related cancer. 展开更多

Background:Type 2 diabetes(T2D)is an adult-onset and obese form of diabetes caused by an interplay between genetic, epigenetic, and environmental components. Here,we have assessed a cohort of 11 genetically different collaborative cross(CC)mouse lines comprised of both sexes for T2D and obesity developments in response to oral infection and high-fat diet(HFD)challenges. Methods:Mice were fed with either the HFD or the standard chow diet(control group)for 12 weeks starting at the age of 8 weeks. At week 5 of the experiment, half of the mice of each diet group were infected with Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum bacteria strains.Throughout the 12-week experimental period, body weight(BW)was recorded biweekly, and intraperitoneal glucose tolerance tests were performed at weeks 6 and 12 of the experiment to evaluate the glucose tolerance status of mice. Results:Statistical analysis has shown the significance of phenotypic variations between the CC lines, which have different genetic backgrounds and sex effects in different experimental groups. The heritability of the studied phenotypes was estimated and ranged between 0.45 and 0.85.We applied machine learning methods to make an early call for T2D and its prognosis. The results showed that classification with random forest could reach the highest accuracy classification(ACC=0.91)when all the attributes were used. Conclusion:Using sex, diet, infection status, initial BW,and area under the curve(AUC)at week 6,we could classify the final phenotypes/outcomes at the end stage of the experiment(at 12 weeks). 展开更多

Obesity is a well-known modifiable risk factor for breast cancer and is considered a poor prognostic factor in pre-and post-menopausal women. While the systemic effects of obesity have been extensively studied, less is known about the mechanisms underlying obesityassociated cancer risk and the local consequences of obesity.Thus,obesity-induced inflammation has become the focus of research interest.Biologically, the development of cancer involves a complex interaction with numerous components. As the tumor immune microenvironment changes due to obesity-triggered inflammation,an increase in infiltration occurs for proinflammatory cytokines and adipokines,as well as adipocytes, immune cells, and tumor cells in the expanded adipose tissue.Complicated cellular-molecular crosstalk networks change critical pathways, mediate metabolic and immune function reprogramming, and have a significant role in tumor metastasis, proliferation, resistance, angiogenesis, and tumorigenesis. This review summarizes recent research findings on how inflammatory mediators in the in situ tumor microenvironment regulate the occurrence and development of breast cancer in the context of obesity. We analyzed the heterogeneity and potential mechanisms of the breast cancer immune microenvironment from the perspective of inflammation to provide a reference for the clinical transformation of precision targeted cancer therapy. 展开更多

Obesity is prevalent within the inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)population, particularly in newly developed countries.Several epidemiological studies have suggested that 15%-40%of IBD patients are obese, and there is a potential role of obesity in the pathogenesis of IBD.The dysfunction of mesenteric fat worsens the inflammatory course of Crohn’s disease and may induce formation of strictures or fistulas.Furthermore, obesity may affect the disease course or treatment response of IBD.Given the increasing data supporting the pathophysiologic and epidemiologic relationship between obesity and IBD,obesity control is being suggested as a novel management for IBD.Therefore, this review aimed to describe the influence of obesity on the outcomes of IBD treatment and to present the current status of pharmacologic or surgical anti-obesity treatments in IBD patients. 展开更多

Objective We aimed to explore the association between obesity and depression and the role of systemic inflammation in older adults. Methods Adults≥65 years old(n=1,973)were interviewed at baseline in 2018 and 1,459 were followed up in 2021.General and abdominal obesity were assessed, and serum C-reactive protein(CRP)levels were measured at baseline.Depression status was assessed at baseline and at follow-up.Logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between obesity and the incidence of depression and worsening of depressive symptoms,as well as the relationship between obesity and CRP levels. The associations of CRP levels with the geriatric depression scale,as well as with its three dimensions, were investigated using multiple linear regressions. Results General obesity was associated with worsening depression symptoms and incident depression, with an odds ratio(OR)[95%confidence interval(CI)]of 1.53(1.13-2.12)and 1.80(1.23-2.63),especially among old male subjects, with OR(95%CI)of 2.12(1.25-3.58)and 2.24(1.22-4.11),respectively;however,no significant relationship was observed between abdominal obesity and depression. In addition, general obesity was associated with high levels of CRP,with OR(95%CI)of 2.58(1.75-3.81),especially in subjects free of depression at baseline, with OR(95%CI)of 3.15(1.97-5.04),and CRP levels were positively correlated with a score of specific dimension(life satisfaction)of depression,P<0.05.Conclusion General obesity, rather than abdominal obesity, was associated with worsening depressive symptoms and incident depression, which can be partly explained by the systemic inflammatory response, and the impact of obesity on depression should be taken more seriously in the older male population. 展开更多
