This study ascertained the factors influencing the sexual behaviour among female adolescents in Onitsha, Anambra state, Nigeria. Method: This was a cross sectional design in which a total of 800 female adolescents were selected from secondary schools in the area using multistage sampling method;and also selected from a major market (for those who were not at school) in the same geographical area using cluster sampling technique. Data were collected from the respondents about socio-demographic profile, reproductive and sexual health knowledge, attitude, behavior, sources of sexual health information. Result: The highest proportion of students who had ever had sex was found among the 16 - 17 years age group while the modal age group was 18 - 19 years for non students. Also “not living with both parents” and poor family background, were markedly associated with increased likelihood to engage in sexual activity. Poverty level was particularly high among the non-student adolescents. Furthermore, wrong knowledge of fertile period, low risk perception of HIV and premarital, and use of condoms among the respondents were all significantly associated with increased chance to engage in sex. The student adolescents got sexuality information mainly from the teachers;as opposed to their non-student counterparts who had youth organization and friends as main sources. Conclusion: Family values, poverty alleviation, change of attitude through appropriate health and sexuality education especially targeting the non-student adolescents are highly recommended. Sexual negotiation skill, accessible formal education for all should be encouraged to create the right sexual behavior among the adolescent girls.展开更多

Soil samples were collected from farmland in Alihame Agbor, Ika South local government area of Delta state, Okwei in Asaba, Oshimil South local government area of Delta state and fegge in Onitsha South local government area of Anambra state. Farmlands in Asaba and Onitsha were used for the post flooding study, while farmland in Agbor served as control since it was not affected by flooding. Soil physicochemical parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity, total organic carbon, total organic matter, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, cation exchange capacity, moisture content and metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, Mn, Ni and K) which were used as index for assessing the effect of flooding on soil quality were analyzed using standard methods. Significant effect of flooding was observed on soil properties on the flood affected farmlands when compared to the control farmland, which was statistically justified at 95% confidence limit (p ≤ 0.05). There were considerable decreases ranging from 4% to 53% at p ≤ 0.05 in the values of pH, total organic carbon, total organic matter, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and cation exchange capacity on the flood affected farmlands when compared to the control farmland;except for electrical conductivity where an increase of 54% and 92% at the flood affected farmlands in Asaba and Onitsha respectively was observed when compared to the control. Higher moisture contents were also recorded of up to about 17% and 45% at the flood affected farmlands in Asaba and Onitsha respectively, when compared to the control. Reduced concentrations ranging from 25% to 49% of essential micronutrients such as Mn, Ni and K were observed on the flood affected farmlands, reflecting the negative impact of the flood. Undesirable effect of the flood was also observed in the flood affected farmlands when compared to the control farmland as increased concentrations ranging from 18% to 114% of Cd, Pb, and Cu, were recorded. The findings of this study revealed significant impacts of the resulting flood on soil quality of the affected farmlands with major attendant effect of the flood felt on farmland in Asaba. As a consequence, measures should be put in place by government and concerned agencies to avoid future flooding of farmlands so as not to further expose the natural quality of these farmlands to the degradative and devastating effect of such flooding.展开更多

This study elucidates the pattern of contraceptive use, the key socio-demographic factors, sexual beliefs and practices associated with its use amongst adolescent girls in Nnewi, Nigeria. Methods: It was a descriptive cross-sectional comparative study of in-school and out-of-school female adolescents. Data were collected using questionnaires and Focus Group Discussion (FGD), then analyzed by selecting socio-demographic and other variables to assess their interaction with contraceptive use and result compared between the two groups. Data were presented in tables and charts and multivariate and chi-square analyses were performed. Result: Higher proportion of sexually active out-of-school girls than their in-school counterparts had ever used contraception—used it in their first and last sexual exposures, while condom was the commonest contraceptive employed by both groups. Age (older adolescents;F = 0.041), belief in condom use (P = 0.05), willingness to get condom for partner (P = 0.001) and regular sexual practice (P = 0.003) were the most important predictors of contraceptive use among the sexually active adolescents. Generally, the out-of-school girls are more likely to use contraceptives than their in-school counterparts. Some misconceptions about pregnancy prevention and unscientific contraceptive methods were mentioned by the subjects during the FGD. Recommendation: Access to reproductive health services needs to be improved especially among the in-school female adolescents. There is need to incorporate the right contraceptive information in the school curriculum, and the out-of-school adolescents should receive periodic dissemination of appropriate Behavior Change Communication (BCC) on the relevance of contraception.展开更多

Such artifacts were taken away by the colonial masters during their various conquests of ancient African kingdoms. In the modern days as well, such trips are made to other countries by Nigerians and Africans to research into some popular arts and amusements lost as a result of neglect. One of such lost is the popular form of literature that once existed in the eastern part of Nigeria--the Onitsha Market Literature. Using evidences from secondary research materials, this paper discusses the re-occurrence of this silly history of neglecting the production and consumption of popular culture in Nigerian and indeed Africa. Using the Nigerian video film industry, Nollywood, as a case study, a case is here made for the proper archiving of these video films for future generations. It is observed that just few decades of video film production in Nigeria, virtually all the pioneer films cannot be found anywhere in the country. Such films must be needed in future for research purposes as the foundations upon which other great films of the future will base. The work therefore concludes with the obvious recommendation that genuine efforts, will, and finances be committed to proper archiving of legally approved Nollywood films. This will engender the sentiment central to film archiving and drastically reduce the problems that may confront the future generation as regards research in the Nigeria video film culture, Nollywood.展开更多
