An empirical study of oral English blended teaching was conducted in a university.The experiment class,which was under the blended teaching mode supported by digital technology,made significant improvements in language accuracy and range,discourse length and coherence,as well as flexibility and appropriateness.On the other hand,there was no significant improvement in the scores of the control class.Through the analysis of results by means of independent t-test and paired sample t-test,we drew the following conclusions:the oral performance of university students from the experiment class significantly improved;there was remarkable difference in the total oral English scores between the experiment class and the control class;the improvement in the total score and the score of each module showed that blended teaching had significant effect on the improvement of university students’oral English performance. 展开更多

This paper intends to give a brief overview of oral English testing for non-English major students in Guangxi Traditional Chinese Medical (TCM) University, which is located in a minority autonomous province in the southern part of P.R. China. It arises from the concrete problems facing Chinese teachers of English who feel troubled when offering an oral English test to an ever increasing number of non-English major students at the end of each semester. The frustration comes not only from the labor intensive and time consuming activity but also from the surrounding ethical issues of subjectivity by the teachers and of injustice to the students to give and receive fair marks. Moreover, there is a conflicting gap between the criteria used by the foreign native English speaking teachers and Chinese teachers of English because of their different cultural background and concept of testing. Nevertheless, an oral English test was designed and the procedures were devised, adopted, and administered to assess the student’s performance. The test and procedures, based on the national course syllabus for testing non-English majors, the level of attainment in oral English of the students, and the limited number of teaching personnel in the TCM University, utilized two different approaches. The native English speakers follow their own concept of devising formats of group testing procedures and assessment criteria forms highlighting communicative interaction. Meanwhile, the Chinese teachers of English emphasize individual rehearsed presentations and ask the student to follow up questions, to make further comment, and inquire about learning experience from the passage in order to make assessment and evaluation. Final student scores were calculated by combining daily participation of the student, the assessment foreign teacher, and the evaluation of Chinese teachers. 展开更多

Facing the great demands and present difficulties of oral English classes, teachers have to conduct more study and practice to find out what roles that an oral English teacher has to take in the oral English classroom. Compared with the traditional teaching role in the English classroom, an oral English teacher has to fulfill more than one role in the classroom teaching so as to provide better learning conditions for students. Lacking more exposure to the real interaction with native speakers, students expect the oral English teacher to be a creator of the language environment. With various teaching and learning activities in the oral English classroom, the teacher has to be a good organizer to ensure every student to achieve improvement. An oral English teacher also has to correct students'language errors while ensuring the smooth progress of the classroom teaching. College students have better English foundations for them to develop English speaking abilities.However, most of them are not good at it compared with reading and listening.Therefore, teachers need to find out some methods to develop students' ability of Group Cooperative Learning to know their errors in time and make sure that they can benefit from it so that students have the enthusiasm to improve their oral English.The thesis is mainly about all empirical study of Group Cooperative Leaning in college English oral course.The major experiment was done with some English majors at North University of China.Though many subjects supported Cooperative Learning and believed that it did effectively reduce some anxiety in students' English oral learning and enhanced their interests, the improvement of their English oral ability is far from satisfaction.This thesis employs questionnaire survey and contrastive analysis methods.This research paper means to investigate the Group Cooperative Learning of oral English learning for college students.The thesis includes five parts.The first part illustrates the purpose, significance of the research and the definition of Group Cooperative Learning. The second part shows the research background from abroad and home, and the factors of poor oral English.The third part presents the research design of the author.The fourth part states the results and discussions about the research.The conclusion part summarizes the major findings of research and also explains the limitations of the author's research and further study about Group Cooperative Learning in oral class for English Majors. 展开更多
