Based on the practice of oil and gas exploration in the Huizhou Sag of the Pearl River Mouth Basin, the geochemical indexes of source rocks were measured, the reservoir development morphology was restored, the rocks and minerals were characterized microscopically, the measured trap sealing indexes were compared, the biomarker compounds of crude oil were extracted, the genesis of condensate gas was identified, and the reservoir-forming conditions were examined. On this basis, the Paleogene Enping Formation in the Huizhou 26 subsag was systematically analyzed for the potential of oil and gas resources, the development characteristics of large-scale high-quality conglomerate reservoirs, the trapping effectiveness of faults, the hydrocarbon migration and accumulation model, and the formation conditions and exploration targets of large-and medium-sized glutenite-rich oil and gas fields. The research results were obtained in four aspects.First, the Paleogene Wenchang Formation in the Huizhou 26 subsag develops extensive and thick high-quality source rocks of semi-deep to deep lacustrine subfacies, which have typical hydrocarbon expulsion characteristics of"great oil generation in the early stage and huge gas expulsion in the late stage",providing a sufficient material basis for hydrocarbon accumulation in the Enping Formation.Second, under the joint control of the steep slope zone and transition zone of the fault within the sag,the large-scale near-source glutenite reservoirs are highly heterogeneous, with the development scale dominated hierarchically by three factors(favorable facies zone, particle component, and microfracture). The(subaqueous)distributary channels near the fault system, with equal grains,a low mud content(<5%),and a high content of feldspar composition, are conducive to the development of sweet spot reservoirs.Third, the strike-slip pressurization trap covered by stable lake flooding mudstone is a necessary condition for oil and gas preservation, and the NE and nearly EW faults obliquely to the principal stress have the best control on traps.Fourth, the spatiotemporal configuration of high-quality source rocks, fault transport/sealing,and glutenite reservoirs controls the degree of hydrocarbon enrichment. From top to bottom, three hydrocarbon accumulation units,i.e.low-fill zone, transition zone, and high-fill zone, are recognized. The main area of the channel in the nearly pressurized source-connecting fault zone is favorable for large-scale hydrocarbon enrichment. The research results suggest a new direction for the exploration of large-scale glutenite-rich reservoirs in the Enping Formation of the Pearl River Mouth Basin, and present a major breakthrough in oil and gas exploration. 展开更多

Currently, the differences in gravity flow deposits within different systems tracts in continental lacustrine basins are not clear. Taking the middle submember of the third member of Paleogene Shahejie Formation(Sha 3 Member) in the Shishen 100 area of the Dongying Sag in the Bohai Bay Basin as an example, the depositional architecture of sublacustrine fans during forced regression and the impact of the fourth-order base-level changes on their growth were investigated using cores, well logs and 3D seismic data. Sublacustrine fans were mainly caused by hyperpycnal flow during the fourth-order base-level rise, while the proportion of slump-induced sublacustrine fans gradually increased during the late fourth-order base-level fall. From rising to falling of the fourth-order base-level, the extension distance of channels inside hyperpycnal-fed sublacustrine fans reduced progressively, resulting in the transformation in their morphology from a significantly channelized fan to a skirt-like fan. Furthermore, the depositional architecture of distributary channel complexes in sublacustrine fans changed from vertical aggradation to lateral migration, and the lateral size of individual channel steadily decreased. The lobe complex's architectural patterns evolved from compensational stacking of lateral migration to aggradational stacking, and the lateral size of individual lobe steadily grew. This study deepens the understanding of depositional features of gravity flow in high-frequency sequence stratigraphy and provides a geological foundation for the fine development of sublacustrine fan reservoirs. 展开更多

Based on rock mineral and geochemical analysis, microscopic observation, physical property measurement, and thin laminae separation test, etc., the characteristics of typical laminae of the Paleogene Shahejie Formation carbonate-rich shale in the Jiyang Depression were analyzed, and the organic matter abundance, reservoir properties, and oil-bearing properties of different laminae were compared. Typical shale storage-seepage structures were classified, and the mobility of oil in different types of shale storage-seepage structure was compared. The results show that the repeated superposition of mud laminae and calcite laminae are the main layer structure of carbonate-rich shales. The calcite laminae are divided into micritic calcite laminae, sparry calcite laminae and fibrous calcite vein. The mud-rich laminae are the main contributor to the organic matter abundance and porosity of shale, with the best hydrocarbon generation potential, reservoir capacity, and oil-bearing property. The micritic calcite laminae also have relatively good hydrocarbon generation potential, reservoir capacity and oil-bearing property. The sparry calcite laminae and fibrous calcite vein have good permeability and conductivity. Four types of shale storage-seepage structure are developed in the carbonate-rich shale, and the mobility of oil in each type of storage-seepage structure is in descending order: sparry calcite laminae enriched shale storage-seepage structure, mixed calcite laminae enriched shale storage-seepage structure, fibrous calcite vein enriched shale storage-seepage structure, and micritic calcite laminae enriched shale storage-seepage structure. The exploration targets of carbonate-rich shale in the Jiyang Depression Shahejie Formation are different in terms of storage-seepage structure at different thermal evolution stages. 展开更多

According to the theory of sequence stratigraphy based on continental transgressive-regressive(T-R)cycles,a 500 m continuous core taken from the second member of Kongdian Formation(Kong 2 Member)of Paleogene in Well G108-8 in the Cangdong Sag,Bohai Bay Basin, was tested and analyzed to clarify the high-frequency cycles of deep-water fine-grained sedimentary rocks in lacustrine basins.A logging vectorgraph in red pattern was plotted, and then a sequence stratigraphic framework with five-order high-frequency cycles was formed for the fine-grained sedimentary rocks in the Kong 2 Member. The high-frequency cycles of fine-grained sedimentary rocks were characterized by using different methods and at different scales. It is found that the fifth-order T cycles record a high content of terrigenous clastic minerals,a low paleosalinity,a relatively humid paleoclimate and a high density of laminae, while the fifth-order R cycles display a high content of carbonate minerals,a high paleosalinity,a dry paleoclimate and a low density of laminae. The changes in high-frequency cycles controlled the abundance and type of organic matter. The T cycles exhibit relatively high TOC and abundant endogenous organic matters in water in addition to terrigenous organic matters, implying a high primary productivity of lake for the generation and enrichment of shale oil. 展开更多

The element geochemical characteristics and diagenetic alteration products of tuffaceous components in sandstone reservoirs of Paleogene Wenchang Formation in typical subsags of the Huizhou-Lufeng area of the Zhu I Depression,Pearl River Mouth Basin, were identified through microscopic analysis and quantitative analysis of main and trace elements. The impacts of dissolution of different tuffaceous components on physical properties of reservoirs were discussed through quantitative characterization of reservoir physical properties. The results show that there are mainly four types of tuffaceous components in the study area, which are acidic, intermediate, basic and alkaline tuffaceous components. The acidic tuffaceous components evolved in a process of strong alteration and weak dissolution of alteration products, with a large amount of kaolinite precipitated during alteration to disenable the improvement of porosity and permeability. The intermediate and alkaline tuffaceous components evolved in a process of strong dissolution of tuffaceous components and strong alteration of residual tuffaceous components;the dissolution of tuffaceous components created intergranular pores, but the alteration products such as autogenic quartz, apatite and illite deteriorated the pore structure;ultimately, the dissolution of tuffaceous components resulted in the increase of porosity but no increase of permeability of the reservoir. The basic tuffaceous components dominantly evolved in a process of dissolution of tuffaceous components to strong dissolution of alteration products;both tuffaceous components between particles and laumontite generated from alteration can be strongly dissolved to create pores;thus, the dissolution of tuffaceous components can significantly increase the physical properties of the reservoir. 展开更多

There are known to be enormous Cenozoic coal-type oil and gas resources located in the basins of the South China Sea,among which the Paleogene coal-measure source rock are one of the main source rock.In order to more effectively analyze the distribution laws of coal-measure source rock in marginal sea basins and guide coal-type oil and gas explorations, the Oligocene coal-measure source rock in the Qiongdongnan Basin were selected as examples in order to systematically analyze the types, development characteristics, control factors, and distribution prediction methods of coalmeasure source rock in marginal sea basins. The Qiongdongnan Basin is located in the northern region of the South China Sea.Previous explorations of the area have determined that the Oligocene coal-measure source rock in the Qiongdongnan Basin have typical"binary structures",which include coal seams and terrigenous marine mudstone.Among those, the terrigenous marine mudstone has been found to greatly expand the scope of the coal-measure source rock.In addition, the coal seams which have been exposed by drilling have been observed to have the characteristics of thin single layer thickness, many layers, and poor stability.Meanwhile, the terrigenous marine mudstone has the characteristics of large thickness and wide distribution. The development of coal-measure source rock is known to be controlled by many factors, such as paleoclimate and paleobotany condition,paleo-structure and topography,paleo-geography,rise and fall of base level, and so on.In accordance with the comprehensive analyses of various control factors of coal-measure source rock, and the changes in water body energy in sedimentary environments,a genetic model of the"energy belt"for the development and distribution of coal-measure source rock was proposed. Also, the development and distribution characteristics of coalmeasure source rock in different types of energy belts were clarified. Then, based on the development and distribution characteristics of coal-measure source rock and their controlling factors, prediction methods of the distribution ranges of coal-measure source rock were proposed from both qualitative and(semi-)quantitative aspects. That is to say,a method for(semi-)quantitative predictions of the distribution ranges of coal-bearing intervals based on model wave impedance inversion and neural network wave impedance inversion, along with a method for(semi-)quantitative predictions of the distribution ranges of terrigenous marine mudstone based on topographical slopes, were introduced in this study. 展开更多

We report geochemical data, SHRIMP zircon ages and Hf-in-zircon isotopic compositions for Cenozoic granitoids from major fault systems in the Tethyan belt in western Yunnan Province, southwestern China.Four magmatic pulses occurred in the Paleogene, namely at ca.57 Ma, ca.50 Ma, 45–40 Ma, and 38–34 Ma.Early magmatism of this episode(57–50 Ma) produced S-type granites whose zircons yielded εHf(t) values of-5.0 to-0.3.In contrast, late magmatism of this episode reflects heterogeneous sources.Zircons from a granite porphyry along the Ailaoshan-Red River fault system have slightly positive εHf(t) values suggesting derivation from relatively young crust and/or a juvenile source. However, zircons from a granite along the Gaoligong fault system have strongly negative εHf(t) values and suggest derivation from a Paleoproterozoic crustal source. The composition of the granitoids varies with age(from ca.57 Ma to ca.34 Ma) from peraluminous to metaluminous and also suggests a change from syn-collisional to late-orogenic tectonic setting.A new tectonic model, impacting lithospheric wedge(ILW) is shown for the origin of Paleogene granitoids in this paper. 展开更多

A deep understanding of the basic geologic characteristics of the fine-grained shale layers in the Paleogene 1 st sub-member of Kong 2 Member(Ek_2~1) in Cangdong sag, Bohai Bay Basin, is achieved through observation of 140 m continuous cores and systematic analysis of over 1 000 core samples from two wells. Basic geological conditions for shale oil accumulation are proposed based on the unconventional geological theory of oil and gas. The shale rock system mainly developed interbedded formation of felsic shale, calcareous and dolomitic shale and carbonates; high quality hydrocarbon source rock formed in the stable and closed environment is the material base for shale oil enrichment; intergranular pores in analcite, intercrystalline pores in dolomite and interlayer micro-fractures make tight carbonate, calcareous and dolomitic shale and felsic shale effective reservoirs, with brittle mineral content of more than 70%; high abundance laminated shale rock in the lower section of Ek_2~1 is rich in shale oil, with a total thickness of 70 m, burial depth between 2 800 to 4 200 m, an average oil saturation of 50%, a sweet spot area of 260 km^2 and predicted resources of over 5×10~8 t. Therefore, this area is a key replacement domain for oil exploration in the Kongdian Formation of the Cangdong sag. At present, the KN9 vertical well has a daily oil production of 29.6 t after fracturing with a 2 mm choke. A breakthrough of continental shale oil exploration in a lacustrine basin is expected to be achieved by volume fracturing in horizontal wells. 展开更多

Hendijan oilfield is located on Northwest of Pesian Gulf offshore of Iran and geologically in the Dezful embayment. In this study, the paleosedimentary depositional environment of the Early Cenomanian to Late Eocene deposits of the Sarvak, Ilam, Gurpi, Pabdeh and JahrumPabdeh Formations was evaluated using microbiostratigraphy, microfacies and D-INPEFA curves which are an accurate method in sequence stratigraphy in terms of regression and transgression of the sea. Also, we used limited elemental geochemical data of oxygen and carbon isotopes in compare with palaeontological data to infer the upper part, 10 m, of the Sarvak Formation. Statistical correlation analyses of geochemical data from upper part of the Sarvak Formation enable inference of differences in paleoconditions at this part and Sarvak Formation, and another Formation, Ilam, was distinguished. Palaentilogical analysis using planktonic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils enables inference about time scale of each Formation. Petrographic data and different sediment textures support those inferences resulted from Gamma ray logs as D-INPEFA curves about different paleo-conditions that occurred during the development of the studied Formations. Synthesis of the analyses leads to the final interpretation that upper Cretaceous, Sarvak, Ilam and Gurpi Formations, at the Hendijan oil field were formed in a carbonate ramp that was likely closed to the open sea, where Gurpi Formation was deposited, by a shallow barrier that allowed seawater recharge into the basin and deep marine basin where Paleogene sediments, Pabdeh and Jahrum-Pabdeh, were deposited. 展开更多

Major breakthroughs of shale oil exploration have been made recently in the upper member of Paleogene Lower Ganchaigou Formation of Yingxiongling area, Qaidam Basin. However, the low total organic carbon content of saline-lacustrine source rock, and unclear genetic mechanism, evaluation criteria and resources potential of the shale oil have restricted the exploration and evaluation of Yingxiongling shale oil. Through analysis of large amounts of cores, well drilling, seismic, laboratory test data and integrated study, focusing on the shale and mixed types of shale oil reservoirs characterized by high-frequency interbedded organic-rich laminated shale and limy dolomite, it is concluded that the shale oil in the upper member of Lower Ganchaigou Formation in the Yingxiongling area have six geological characteristics:(1) two-stage hydrocarbon generation of hydrogen-rich source rock and large amount of retained oil;(2) multiple types of reservoir space and good reservoir properties;(3)source-reservoir integration, thick “sweet spot” and high oil-bearing grade;(4) high pressure coefficient between and under salt layers, and sufficient formation energy;(5) high content of light components, high gas-oil ratio, and good quality of the crude oil;(6) high content of brittle minerals and good fracability. The evaluation criterion of shale oil is preliminarily established based on the eight parameters: total organic carbon content, maturity, effective porosity, oil saturation, brittle mineral content, pressure coefficient, lamellation density, and burial depth. Combined with parameters of E32 source rock thickness, area, vertical distribution of oil layers, and free hydrocarbon content, the shale oil resources have been preliminarily estimated as 21×10^(8) t.The structurally stable area is the predominant objective of shale oil exploration and the favorable exploration area for Yingxiongling shale oil is nearly 800 km^(2). 展开更多

To determine the occurrence mechanism and mobility of shale oil in the Shahejie Formation in the Jiyang Depression, organic geochemistry analysis, thin-section petrological observation, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption, high-pressure mercury intrusion porosimetry, field emission scanning electron microscopy experiments were conducted on shale samples to reveal its storage mechanism, including pore size, ratio of adsorbed oil to free oil, mobility and its influencing factors, and mode of storage. Residual shale oil is mainly present in pores less than 100 nm in diameter under the atmospheric temperature and pressure. The lower limit of pore size for free oil is 5 nm, and the lower limit of pore size for movable oil occurrence is about 30 nm. The light components, low TOC and high porosity are the main factors contributing to the high proportion of movable oil. Each type of pore can contain residual shale oil, but not all pores have shale oil. Pore connectivity and surface wettability are the determinants of shale oil enrichment degree and enrichment state. 展开更多

Taking the inter-salt organic-rich shales in the third member of Paleogene Shahejie Formation(Es3)of Dongpu sag in Bohai Bay Basin as an example, the origin of overpressure, development characteristics, formation and evolution mechanism, formation stages and geological significance on shale oil and gas of overpressure fractures in the inter-salt shale reservoir were investigated by means of thin section identification, scanning electron microscopy observation, analysis of fluid inclusions, logging data analysis, and formation pressure inversion. The results show that overpressure is universal in the salt-lake basin of Dongpu sag,and under-compaction caused by the sealing of salt-gypsum layer, pressurization due to hydrocarbon generation, transformation and dehydration of clay minerals, and fault sealing are the 4 main factors leading to the occurrence of overpressure. The overpressure fractures are small in scale, with an average length of 356.2μm and an average underground opening of 11.6μm.But they are densely developed, with an average surface density of 0.76 cm/cm2.Moreover,they are often accompanied by oil and gas charging, and thus high in effectiveness.Overpressure fractures were mainly formed during two periods of large-scale oil and gas charging, approximately 25-30 Ma ago and 0-5 Ma ago.Inter-salt overpressure fractures play dual roles as the storage space and migration paths of shale oil and gas. They contribute 22.3%to the porosity of shale reservoir and 51.4%to the permeability. They can connect fracture systems of multiple scales, greatly improving the quality of shale reservoir.During the development of shale oil and gas,inter-salt overpressure fractures can affect the extension and morphology of hydraulic fractures, giving rise to complex and highly permeable volumetric fracture networks, improving hydraulic fracturing effect and enhancing shale oil and gas productivity. 展开更多

The marine Paleogene at Gangba, south Tibet is characterized by shallow water deposits and in vertical succession shows a clear facies change from fluvial plain through carbonate platform to retro-platform mud flat. From the bottom of Danian to Upper Priabonian, nine 3rd -order depositional sequences are recognized, which in turn make up four supersequences and constitute two clear transgression-regression cycles. These requences were developed in a tectonic setting of strong compression resulted from the collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates. Between the Paleocene and Eocene, there exists an important hiatus that has consumed at least 5.5 Ma of deposition. This unconformity is thought to be created by the basement uplift coupled with eustatic fall and marks the basin transformation from epicontinental sea to remnant hay. The rapid basement subsidence and relative sea level rise in Late Eocene are thought to be caused by the loading flexure of the Eurasian continent onto the Indian plate, which resulted in the southward migration of depocenter in the epoch. 展开更多

The early Paleogene is critical for understanding global biodiversity patterns in modern ecosystems. During this interval, Southern Hemisphere continents were largely characterized by isolation and faunal endemism following the breakup of Gondwana. Africa has been proposed as an important source area for the origin of several marine vertebrate groups but its Paleogene record is poorly sampled, especially from sub-Saharan Africa. To document the early Paleogene marine ecosystems of Central Africa, we revised the stratigraphic context of sedimentary deposits from three fossil-rich vertebrate localities: the Landana section in the Cabinda exclave(Angola), and the Manzadi and Bololo localities in western Democratic Republic of Congo. We provide more refined age constraints for these three localities based on invertebrate and vertebrate faunas, foraminiferal and dinoflagellate cyst assemblages, and carbon isotope records. We find an almost complete absence of Danian-aged rocks in the Landana section, contrary to prevailing interpretations over the last half a century(only the layer 1, at the base of the section, seems to be Danian). Refining the age of these Paleocene layers is crucial for analyzing fish evolution in a global framework, with implications for the early appearance of Scombridae(tunas and mackerels) and Tetraodontiformes(puffer fishes). The combination of vertebrate fossil records from Manzadi and Landana sections suggests important environmental changes around the K/Pg transition characterized by an important modification of the ichthyofauna. A small faunal shift may have occurred during the Selandian. More dramatic is the distinct decrease in overall richness that lasts from the Selandian to the Ypresian. The Lutetian of West Central Africa is characterized by the first appearance of numerous cartilaginous and bony fishes. Our analysis of the ichthyofauna moreover indicates two periods of faunal exchanges: one during the Paleocene, where Central Africa appears to have been a source for the European marine fauna, and another during the Eocene when Europe was the source of the Central Africa fauna. These data indicate that Central Africa has had connections with the Tethyian realm. 展开更多

This study combines large volume three-dimensional reconstruction via focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy(FIB-SEM) with conventional scanning electron microscope(SEM) observation, automatic mineral identification and characterization system(AMICS) and large-area splicing of SEM images to characterize and classify the microscopic storage space distribution patterns and 3D pore structures of shales in the second member of the Paleogene Kongdian Formation(Kong 2) in the Cangdong Sag of the Bohai Bay Basin. It is shown that:(1) The Kong 2 Member can be divided into seven types according to the distribution patterns of reservoir spaces: felsic shale with intergranular micron pores, felsic shale with intergranular fissures, felsic shale with intergranular pores, hybrid shale with intergranular pores and fissures, hybrid shale with intergranular pores, clay-bearing dolomitic shale with intergranular pores, and clay-free dolomitic shale with intergranular pores.(2) The reservoir of the intergranular fracture type has better storage capacity than that of intergranular pore type. For reservoirs with storage space of intergranular pore type, the dolomitic shale reservoir has the best storage capacity, the hybrid shale comes second, followed by the felsic shale.(3) The felsic shale with intergranular fissures has the best storage capacity and percolation structure, making it the first target in shale oil exploration.(4) The large volume FIB-SEM 3D reconstruction method is able to characterize a large shale volume while maintaining relatively high spatial resolution, and has been demonstrated an effective method in characterizing the 3D storage space in strongly heterogeneous continental shales. 展开更多

Electronic probe, fluid inclusion homogenization temperature,Raman spectroscopy and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry were utilized to identify the hydrothermal fluid-rock interactions in the second member of the Paleogene Kongdian Formation of Zaoyuan oilfield in Bohai Bay Basin(Kong 2 Member for short)of Well Z56 to find out the relationship between zeolite and hydrothermal fluid. The experimental results show that:(1)Pyrobitumen coexists with hydrothermal fluid characteristic minerals such as chlorite, barite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, natrolite and analcime in mudstone fractures.(2)The temperatures calculated from laser Raman spectrum of pyrobitumen, from the chlorite geothermometer and from measured homogenization temperature of natrolite inclusions are 324-354℃,124-166℃ and 89-196℃,respectively;although vary widely, all the temperatures are obviously higher than the normal geothermal temperature.(3)The positive Eu anomaly of chlorite and barite, and the similar distribution pattern in rare earth elements between natrolite and basalt indicate they are from magmatic hydrothermal fluid. Moreover, drilling data shows that the Kong 2 Member in Well Z56 has several sets of basalt interlayers, suggesting there was geologic base of magmatic hydrothermal fluid activity. The magmatic hydrothermal fluid-rock interaction may be one of the reasons for the abnormal enrichment of zeolite in Kong 2 Member of the Cangdong Sag. 展开更多
