Particle size distributions(PSDs) of bottom sediments in a coastal zone are generally multimodal due to the complexity of the dynamic environment. In this paper, bottom sediments along the deep channel of the Pearl River Estuary(PRE) are used to understand the multimodal PSDs′ characteristics and the corresponding depositional environment. The results of curve-fitting analysis indicate that the near-bottom sediments in the deep channel generally have a bimodal distribution with a fine component and a relatively coarse component. The particle size distribution of bimodal sediment samples can be expressed as the sum of two lognormal functions and the parameters for each component can be determined. At each station of the PRE, the fine component makes up less volume of the sediments and is relatively poorly sorted. The relatively coarse component, which is the major component of the sediments, is even more poorly sorted. The interrelations between the dynamics and particle size of the bottom sediment in the deep channel of the PRE have also been investigated by the field measurement and simulated data. The critical shear velocity and the shear velocity are calculated to study the stability of the deep channel. The results indicate that the critical shear velocity has a similar distribution over large part of the deep channel due to the similar particle size distribution of sediments. Based on a comparison between the critical shear velocities derived from sedimentary parameters and the shear velocities obtained by tidal currents, it is likely that the depositional area is mainly distributed in the northern part of the channel, while the southern part of the deep channel has to face higher erosion risk. 展开更多

Coastal inundation results in many human casualties and significant economic losses. In this study,an inundation model with an unstructured mesh was developed using the ADvanced CIRCulation(ADCIRC)and Simulating WAves Nearshore(SWAN)models to simulate 43 inundation events from 1998 to 2018.A combined wind-pressure field derived from the assimilation windpressure model was used to drive the coupled ADCIRC-SWAN model. On the basis of the model results,a sensitivity study of the influence of land reclamation on coastal inundation was conducted. The results of the study showed that coastline changes caused by reclamation significantly influence the distribution of coastal inundation, particularly in areas where narrow waterways, bays, and peninsulas are newly formed.Combining the extreme inundation events calculated using the Gumbel and Weibull distributions, the 10-year,50-year,100-year,and 200-year return coastal inundations were obtained for the Pearl River Estuary in China. The risk of coastal inundation was analyzed according to the probability of the inundation depth exceeding 1 m.A hazard grade zoning map was drawn to guide disaster relief and mitigation in the reclamation area. 展开更多

The Pearl River Estuary(PRE) is located at the onshore-offshore transition zone between South China and South China Sea Basin, and it is of great significant value in discussing tectonic relationships between South China block and South China Sea block and seismic activities along the offshore active faults in PRE. However, the researches on geometric characteristics of offshore faults in this area are extremely lacking. To investigate the offshore fault distribution and their geometric features in the PRE in greater detail, we acquired thirteen seismic reflection profiles in 2015. Combining the analysis of the seismic reflection and free-air gravity anomaly data, this paper revealed the location, continuity, and geometry of the littoral fault zone and other offshore faults in PRE. The littoral fault zone is composed of the major Dangan Islands fault and several parallel, high-angle, normal faults, which mainly trend northeast to northeast-to-east and dip to the southeast with large displacements. The fault zone is divided into three different segments by the northwest-trending faults. Moreover, the basement depth around Dangan Islands is very shallow, while it suddenly increases along the islands westward and southward. These has resulted in the islands and neighboring areas becoming the places where the stress accumulates easily. The seismogenic pattern of this area is closely related to the comprehensive effect of intersecting faults together with the low velocity layer. 展开更多

Spatial distribution and temporal dynamics of phytoplankton community and their relationships with environmental factors were studied in the Pearl River Estuary(PRE), South China, in three seasons. Salinity was considered as the key environmental variable controlling horizontal distributions of phytoplankton community composition. A transition from dominance of freshwater diatoms(Aulacoseira granulata and A. granulata v. angustissima) to estuarine species(Skeletonema costatum and Pseudonitzschia delicatissima) was observed in the high flow season(summer) along the estuary gradient; in the low flow season(spring), the inner estuary was relatively homogeneous and some typical estuarine species could be found near the river mouth. In the normal flow season(autumn), a potentially toxic bluegreen species, Microcystis spp. was predominant in the middle reaches of the estuary, which should be seeded from upstream and transported downstream by river discharges. Phytoplankton abundance was negatively correlated with suspended solid content and nutrient concentration in the PRE, suggesting that turbidity and nutrient availability were the crucial factors regulating the algal biomass. Phytoplankton abundance in the outer estuary was enhanced by increasing irradiance and continued to be enhanced until phosphorus-limitation. 展开更多

Three surveys were carried out in Pearl River Estuary and adjacent coastal area in May, August, and November, 2013, to investigate the temporal and spatial variations of abundance of phycoerythrin-rich Synechococcus(PE-rich SYN) and phycocyanin-rich Synechococcus(PC-rich SYN). The effects of environmental factors on the alternation of the different Synechococcus groups were also elucidated. PE-rich SYN was detected in three surveys, whereas PC-rich SYN was detected in May and August, but not in November. The highest abundances of PE-rich SYN and PC-rich SYN were recorded in August and May, with mean values of 74.17×103 and 189.92×103 cells m L-1, respectively. From May to November, the relative abundance of PE-rich SYN increased, whereas that of PC-rich SYN declined. PE-rich and PC-rich SYN presented similar horizontal distributions with high abundance in the southern estuary in May, and in the western estuary in August. The abundances of PE-rich and PC-rich SYN were high at 27–32℃and salinity of 10–20. PC-rich SYN was not detected at < 24℃, and PC:PE-rich SYN decreased in abundance with salinity increase. When less than 20 mg L-1, suspended particulate matter(SPM) was helpful for Synechococcus growth. PE-rich SYN decreased in abundance when the concentration of dissolved inorganic nitrogen increased in May and November, and the concentration of phosphate increased in November. However, PC-rich SYN abundance and nutrients showed no correlation. Principal component analysis and regression analysis indicated that PE-rich SYN significantly correlated with the principal components that were affected by environmental factors. 展开更多

Effects of nitrogen(N) and phosphorus(P) from different sources and at different concentrations on the growth of Levanderina fissa(= Gyrodinium instriatum) were studied in laboratory conditions. The findings might explain the recurrent blooms of this species in Pearl River Estuary, China. Results showed that nutrient limitation significantly inhibited the growth of L. fissa. The values of specific growth rate(μmax) and half-saturation nutrient concentration(KS) were 0.37 divisions/d and 8.49 μmol L^(-1) for N, and 0.39 divisions/d and 1.99 μmol L^(-1) for P, respectively. Based on KS values, dissolved inorganic N level in PRE was sufficient to support the high proliferation of L. fissa, while dissolved inorganic P concentration was far lower than the minimum requirement for its effective growth. L. fissa was not able to utilize dissolved organic N(DON) compounds such as urea, amino acids, and uric acid. However, it grew well by using a wide variety of dissolved organic P(DOP) sources like nucleotides, glycerophosphate, and 4-nitrophenylphosphate. The results from this study suggested that the ability in DOP utilization of L. fissa offers this species a competitive advantage in phytoplankton communities. The high level and continuous supply of DIN, enrichment of DOP, together with warm climate and low salinity in the Pearl River Estuary provided a suitable nutrient niche for the growth of L. fissa, and resulted in the recurrent blooms in the estuary. 展开更多

An investigation on the soil microbe populations from an agricultural inning area at the Pearl River estuary in Guangdong province, China was conducted via high through-put sequencing. The results revealed abundant diversity in the soil bacterial and fungal populations. In total, 197103 sequence tags were obtained from soil samples, most of which represented bacterial genera Actinomycetes, Bacillus and Marinobacter, while a majority of 118378 tags obtained were derived from fungal genera Clostridium, Devosia, Bradyrhizobium, Bdellovibrio, Phenylobacterium, Penicillium, and Emericella. Furthermore, nine physiological indexes (pH, available phosphorous, basic-group nitrogen, available potassium, catalase, sucrose, urease, phosphatase, and organic matters) were measured in three soil samples, and the association between these physiological indexes and microbe population composition was examined. The results revealed obvious inter-sample differences associated with ten dominating microbial groups: genera Clostridium, Devosia, Bradyrhizobium, Bdellovibrio, Phenylobacterium, and Penicillium were mainly impacted by pH (with a positive correlation), genera Sphingomonas and Acinetobacter mainly by available phosphorous (positive correlation), and genera Gemmatimonas and Pseudomonas by both pH and available phosphorous (negative correlation). Our study suggested that regulation of microbial species/populations might help improve soil environment to facilitate the growth of crops’ above-ground parts, and this provides practical information for inning agriculture. 展开更多

Mean and fluctuating velocities were measured by use of a pulse coherent acoustic Doppler profiler(PC-ADP) and an acoustic Doppler velocimeter in the tidal bottom boundary layer of the Pearl River Estuary. The bed shear stresses were estimated by four different methods:log profile(LP),eddy correlation(EC),turbulent kinetic energy(TKE),and inertial dissipation(ID).The results show that(a) all four methods for estimating bed stresses have advantages and disadvantages, and they should be applied simultaneously to obtain reliable frictional velocity and to identify potential sources of errors;(b) the LP method was found to be the most suitable to estimate the bed stresses in non-stratified,quasi-steady,and homogeneous flows;and(c) in the estuary where the semi-diurnal tidal current is dominant, bed shear stresses exhibit a strong quarter-diurnal variation. 展开更多

Sea level rise has become an important issue in global climate change studies. This study investigates trends in sea level records, particularly extreme records, in the Pearl River Estuary, using measurements from two tide gauge stations in Macao and Hong Kong. Extremes in the original sea level records(daily higher high water heights) and in tidal residuals with and without the 18.6-year nodal modulation are investigated separately. Thresholds for defining extreme sea levels are calibrated based on extreme value theory. Extreme events are then modeled by peaks-over-threshold models. The model applied to extremes in original sea level records does not include modeling of their durations, while a geometric distribution is added to model the duration of extremes in tidal residuals. Realistic modeling results are recommended in all stationary models. Parametric trends of extreme sea level records are then introduced to nonstationary models through a generalized linear model framework. The result shows that, in recent decades, since the 1960 s, no significant trends can be found in any type of extreme at any station, which may be related to a reduction in the influence of tropical cyclones in the region. For the longer-term record since the 1920 s at Macao, a regime shift of tidal amplitudes around the 1970 s may partially explain the diverse trend of extremes in original sea level records and tidal residuals. 展开更多

[Objective] The study aimed to predict the peak water level in Pearl River Estuary under the background of sea level rise. [Method] The changing trends of peak water level at Denglongshan station and Hengmen station were analyzed firstly on the basis of regression models, and then sea level rise in Pearl River Estuary in 2050 was predicted to estimate the 1-in-50-year peak water level in the same year. [Result] Regression analyses showed that the increasing rate of peak water level over past years was 6.3 mm/a at Denglongshan station and 5.8 mm/a at Hengmen station. In addition, if sea level will rise by 20, 30 and 60 cm respectively in 2050, it was predicted that the 1-in-50-year peak water level will reach 3.04, 3.14 and 3.44 m at Denglongshan station, and 3.19, 3.29 and 3.59 m at Hengmen station separately. [Conclusion] The estimation of peak water level in Pearl River Estuary could provide theoretical references for water resources planning. 展开更多

A structure function approach is applied to estimate the turbulent kinetic energy(TKE) dissipation rate in the bottom boundary layer of the Pearl River Estuary(PRE).Simultaneous measurements with an acoustic Doppler velocimeter(ADV) supplied independent data for the verification of the structure function method. The results show that,1) the structure function approach is reliable and successfully applied method to estimate the TKE dissipation rate. The observed dissipation rates range between 8.3×10 4 W/kg and 4.9×10 6 W/kg in YM01 and between 3.4×10 4 W/kg and 4.8×10 7 W/kg in YM03,respectively,while exhibiting a strong quarter-diurnal variation.2) The balance between the shear production and viscous dissipation is better achieved in the straight river. This first-order balance is significantly broken in the estuary by non-shear production/dissipation due to wave-induced fluctuations. 展开更多

Accurate diet identification of top predators is crucial to fully understand their ecological roles.Compared to terrestrial animals, gathering dietary information from cetaceans is notoriously difficult. Here,we applied a multilocus metabarcoding approach to investigate the diet of vulnerable Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins and Indo-Pacificfinless porpoises from the Pearl River Estuary(PRE),China. Our analyses identified 21 preyfish species from the 42 humpback dolphin stomachs,as well as 10 species offish and 1 species of cephalopod from the 13finless porpoise stomachs. All of the taxa were assigned to the species level, highlighting that the multimarker approach could facilitate species identification. Most of the prey species were small-and medium-sizedfishes that primarily fed on zooplankton. The calculated similarity index revealed a moderated dietary overlap between the 2 cetaceans, presumably due to the feeding of the 2 predators in association withfishing vessels in the PRE.A more diverse diet was observed in humpback dolphins in the closedfishing season compared to thefishing season, implying the influence on the dolphin diet due to the availability of commercialfishery resources. However, according to the results of species rarefaction curves, ourfindings on the feeding habits of the 2 cetaceans are still limited by insufficient sample size and therefore should be interpreted with caution. This study represents afirst attempt to apply the multilocus DNA metabarcoding technique in the diet analysis of small cetaceans, although more efforts are needed to improve this type of analysis. 展开更多

Based on the practice of oil and gas exploration in the Huizhou Sag of the Pearl River Mouth Basin, the geochemical indexes of source rocks were measured, the reservoir development morphology was restored, the rocks and minerals were characterized microscopically, the measured trap sealing indexes were compared, the biomarker compounds of crude oil were extracted, the genesis of condensate gas was identified, and the reservoir-forming conditions were examined. On this basis, the Paleogene Enping Formation in the Huizhou 26 subsag was systematically analyzed for the potential of oil and gas resources, the development characteristics of large-scale high-quality conglomerate reservoirs, the trapping effectiveness of faults, the hydrocarbon migration and accumulation model, and the formation conditions and exploration targets of large-and medium-sized glutenite-rich oil and gas fields. The research results were obtained in four aspects.First, the Paleogene Wenchang Formation in the Huizhou 26 subsag develops extensive and thick high-quality source rocks of semi-deep to deep lacustrine subfacies, which have typical hydrocarbon expulsion characteristics of"great oil generation in the early stage and huge gas expulsion in the late stage",providing a sufficient material basis for hydrocarbon accumulation in the Enping Formation.Second, under the joint control of the steep slope zone and transition zone of the fault within the sag,the large-scale near-source glutenite reservoirs are highly heterogeneous, with the development scale dominated hierarchically by three factors(favorable facies zone, particle component, and microfracture). The(subaqueous)distributary channels near the fault system, with equal grains,a low mud content(<5%),and a high content of feldspar composition, are conducive to the development of sweet spot reservoirs.Third, the strike-slip pressurization trap covered by stable lake flooding mudstone is a necessary condition for oil and gas preservation, and the NE and nearly EW faults obliquely to the principal stress have the best control on traps.Fourth, the spatiotemporal configuration of high-quality source rocks, fault transport/sealing,and glutenite reservoirs controls the degree of hydrocarbon enrichment. From top to bottom, three hydrocarbon accumulation units,i.e.low-fill zone, transition zone, and high-fill zone, are recognized. The main area of the channel in the nearly pressurized source-connecting fault zone is favorable for large-scale hydrocarbon enrichment. The research results suggest a new direction for the exploration of large-scale glutenite-rich reservoirs in the Enping Formation of the Pearl River Mouth Basin, and present a major breakthrough in oil and gas exploration. 展开更多

China’s low-carbon development path will make significant contributions to achieving global sustainable development goals.Due to the diverse natural and economic conditions across different regions in China, there exists an imbalance in the distribution of car-bon emissions. Therefore, regional cooperation serves as an effective means to attain low-carbon development. This study examined the pattern of carbon emissions and proposed a potential joint emission reduction strategy by utilizing the industrial carbon emission intens-ity(ICEI)as a crucial factor. We utilized social network analysis and Local Indicators of Spatial Association(LISA)space-time trans-ition matrix to investigate the spatiotemporal connections and discrepancies of ICEI in the cities of the Pearl River Basin(PRB),China from 2010 to 2020.The primary drivers of the ICEI were determined through geographical detectors and multi-scale geographically weighted regression. The results were as follows:1)the overall ICEI in the Pearl River Basin is showing a downward trend, and there is a significant spatial imbalance.2)There are numerous network connections between cities regarding the ICEI,but the network structure is relatively fragile and unstable.3)Economically developed cities such as Guangzhou,Foshan, and Dongguan are in the center of the network while playing an intermediary role.4)Energy consumption, industrialization, per capita GDP,urbanization, science and techno-logy,and productivity are found to be the most influential variables in the spatial differentiation of ICEI,and their combination in-creased the explanatory power of the geographic variation of ICEI.Finally, through the analysis of differences and connections in urban carbon emissions under different economic levels and ICEI,the study suggests joint carbon reduction strategies, which are centered on carbon transfer, financial support, and technological assistance among cities. 展开更多

As key parts of land-sea transition zones, estuary ecosystems play a very important role in the ocean carbon cycle processes. The sources, degradation, and preservation of dissolved organic matter(DOM)in estuaries have long been the subject of intense study. To examine the aforementioned issues, this study examined three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy to determine the spatial distribution and sources of DOM in the pore water of three sedimentary cores from the Pearl River Estuary(S1,S2 and S3,with increasing salinity).Using the parallel factor analysis(PARAFAC)method to analyze the three-dimensional fluorescence spectrum data, five fluorescent components were obtained—three humic-like components(C1,C3,and C4),and two protein-like components(C2 and C5).C2 exhibited a significant positive correlation with the sediment microbial deoxyribose nucleic acid(DNA)concentration(R~2=0.69,P<0.01),indicating that the protein-like component C2 might be derived from the catabolism of in situ microbes.C5 displayed a relatively weak correlation with DNA concentration(R~2=0.40,P<0.05),presumably due to the incorporation of phenolic compounds, which have a fluorescence peak very similar to that of protein-like components. The source of humic-like fluorescent components is extremely complex. The content at station S1 was relatively high(1.45–8.83 R.U.),which implies that terrestrial inputs had a significant influence. The three humic-like components showed similar distributions at S2 and S3,and the fluorescence intensity was rather low;this result indicates that the DOM at these two stations was more likely affected by the metabolism of algae and microorganisms. The humification index(HIX)and the fluorescence intensity of protein-like components increased and decreased, respectively, with depth. There was a significant positive correlation between the relative content of protein-like components and the spectral slope ratio(SR),which indicates that DOM transitioned from low-molecular-weight protein-like components in the surface sediment to high-molecular-weight humic-like components in the subsurface. This study provides valuable information for understanding the pore water size/reactivity(PWSR)model of DOM and its biochemical processes occurring in estuary sediments. 展开更多

The results of numerical experiment are very consistent with the surface observations, especially in the processes of marine fog formation and evolution. Besides, a series of sensitivity numerical experiments were performed by varying the distribution of landuse type and the turbulence exchange process. It is shown that the marine fog forms along the coastal line. Tests have indicated that when the distribution of landuse type is modified, the regions where the marine fog can intrude into are obviously different. The turbulence process in the model is important for fog formation and evolution. If the influence of turbulence process is ignored in numerical simulation experiment, the simulated maximum of the cloud liquid water content and the height of fog top will be decreased greatly. 展开更多

Based on laboratory culture of harmful alga on iron and phosphorus uptake, and the study of accu-mulation of iron-phosphorus in cores and release of iron and phosphorus from surficial sediments collected in the Pearl River Estuary, the reasons of the high frequency of phytoplankton bloom therein are discussed. The results show that Fe starvation can make algal growth rate slow down and the peak of cell number decrease. Fe and P contents in algal cell bear a significant correlation and the molar ratio of P:Fe is ~356:1, suggesting that algal uptake of Fe and P is synergistic. Total Fe and total P in sediments are positively correlated and Fe-P is the main species of inorganic sedimentary P. Through continuous leaching with agitation, 34.26%―80.21% of exchangeable P and 4.04%―22.52% of ex-changeable Fe are released from surficial sediments, implying that the accumulation of Fe-P in sedi-ments is available for providing nutrients (P and essential Fe) for the demand of phytoplankton bloom. These factors might be responsible for a higher frequency of red tides than other marine regions. 展开更多

A three-dimensional wave-current-sediment coupled numerical model is developed to understand the sediment transport dynamics in the Zhujiang(Pearl)River Estuary(ZRE),China. The model results are in good agreement with observed data, and statistics show good model skill scores.Numerical studies are conducted to assess the scenarios of suspended sediment in the ZRE under the effects of different forcing(river discharges, waves, and winds). The model results indicate that the estuarine gravitational circulation plays an important role in the development of estuarine turbidity maximum in the ZRE,particularly during neap tides. The increased river discharge can result in a seaward sediment transport. The suspended sediment concentration(SSC)in the bottom increases with both wave bottom orbital velocity and wave height.Because of the shallow water depth, the effect of waves on sediment in the west shoal is greater than that in the east channel. The southwesterly wind-induced wave affects the SSC more than those resulting from the northeasterly wind, while the northeasterly wind-driven circulation has a slightly greater influence on the SSC than that of the southwesterly wind. However,a steady southwesterly wind condition favors the increase of the SSC in the Lingding Bay more so than a steady northeasterly wind condition. If the other forcings are same, the averaged SSC under a steady southwesterly wind condition is about 1.1 times that resulting from a steady northeasterly wind. 展开更多
