OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the application of health assessment instruments in Chinese medicine. METHODS: According to a pre-defined search strategy, a comprehensive literature search for all articles published in China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases was conducted. The resulting articles that met the defined inclusion and exclusion criteria were used for analysis. RESULTS: A total of 97 instruments for health outcome assessment in Chinese medicine have been used in fundamental and theoretical research, and 14 of these were also used in 29 clinical trials that were randomized controlled trials, or descriptive or cross-sectional studies. In 2 152 Chinese medicine-based studies that used instruments in their methodology, more than 150 questionnaires were identified. Among the identified questionnaires, 51 were used in more than 10 articles (0.5%). Most of these instruments were developed in Western countries and few studies (4%) used the instrument as the primary evidence for their conclusions. CONCLUSION: Usage of instruments for health outcome assessment in Chinese medicine is increasing rapidly; however, current limitations include selection rationale, result interpretation and standardization, which must be addressed accordingly. 展开更多

Objectives Gerontechnology has great potential in promoting older adults’well-being.With the accelerated aging process, gerontechnology has a promising market prospect. However, most technological developers and healthcare professionals attached importance to products’effectiveness, and ignored older adults’demands and user experience, which reduced older adults'adoption intention of gerontechnology use.The inclusion of older adults in the design process of technologies is essential to maximize the effect. This study explored older adults’demands for a self-developed intelligent medication administration system and proposed optimization schemes, thus providing reference to developing geriatric-friendly technologies and products. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted to explore older adults’technological demands for the self-developed intelligent medication administration system, and data were analyzed based on the Kano model.A self-made questionnaire was administered from July 2020 to October 2020 after participants used this system for two weeks. The study was registered with the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry(ChiCTR2000040644).Results A total of 354 older adults participated in the survey.Four items, namely larger font size, simpler operation process, scheduled medication reminders and reliable hardware, were classified as must-be attributes;three items, namely searching drug instructions through WeChat, more sensitive system and longer battery life,as attractive attributes;one item, viewing disease-related information through WeChat,as the one-dimensional attribute;and the rest were indifferent attributes, including simple and beautiful displays, blocking advertisements automatically, providing user privacy protection protocol, viewing personal medical information only by logged-in users, recording all the medications, ordering medications through WeChat. The satisfaction values were between 0.24 and 0.69,and dissatisfaction values were between 0.06 and 0.94.Conclusion This study suggested that older adults had personalized technology demands.Including their technological demands and desire may assist in decreasing the digital divide and promoting the satisfaction of e-health and/or m-health.Based on older adults’demands, our study proposed optimization schemes of the intelligent medication administration system, which may help developers design geriatric-friendly intelligent products and nurses to perform older adults-centered and efficient medication management. 展开更多

Objectives:This study aimed to assess happiness and its predictors among a group of Iranian hospital nurses. Methods:This cross-sectional study was done in 2016 on 620 hospital nurses who worked in five teaching hospitals affiliated to Kashan University of Medical Sciences,Kashan,Iran.Nurses were recruited through the census method.Data collection instruments were a researcher-made demographic and occupational characteristics questionnaire, the Oxford Happiness Inventory, and the Minnesota Job Satisfaction Questionnaire.Data analysis was done through stepwise multiple linear regression analysis. Results:Among 620 recruited nurses,422 returned their questionnaires completely filled. The mean of their happiness was 123.4±18.4 in the possible score range of 29-174.The significant predictors of happiness were satisfaction with mental health, monthly salary, satisfaction with salary, quality of life, current hospital ward, the length of working in the current ward, work shift, age, job satisfaction, and satisfaction with physicians'conduct and performance. These variables explained 50.3%of the total variance of happiness.Satisfaction with mental health had the greatest proportion in explaining the variance of happiness. Conclusion:Nurses in teaching hospitals in Kashan,Iran, have moderate happiness.Their happiness is affected by different factors, particularly by satisfaction with their mental health.Health policy-makers and authorities,in developing workforce-related plans and programs, need to pay special attention to nurses'happiness and its contributing factors. 展开更多

Objectives:To describe the professional quality of life and explore its associated factors among nurses coming from other areas of China to assist with the anti-epidemic fight inWuhan and especially examine whether the hospital ethical climate was independently associated with nurses’professional quality of life. Methods:A cross-sectional online survey was conducted from March 2020 to April 2020.The nurses working in Wuhan from the other parts of China were the target population. The Professional Quality of Life Scale version 5,the Hospital Ethical Climate Survey, and a basic information sheet were used to collect data.Descriptive statistics,t-test,ANOVA,Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Results:In total,236 nurses participated in this study, and 219 valid questionnaires were analyzed. The average age of the participants was 31.2±5.0 years. Most nurses were female(176/219;80.4%)and married(145/219;66.2%).In term of professional quality of life, nurses reported moderate(129/219;58.9%)to high(90/219;41.1%)levels of compassion satisfaction,low(119/219;54.3%)to moderate(100/219;45.7%)levels of burnout, and low(67/219;36.0%)to high(10/219;4.6%)levels of secondary traumatic stress.Regarding hospital ethical climate, nurses reported moderately high hospital ethical climates with an average score of 4.46.After controlling for socio-demographic characteristics, the multiple linear regression models showed that the hospital ethical climate subscale of“relationship with physicians”was independently associated with the compassion satisfaction(b=0.533,P<0.01)and burnout(b=0.237,P<0.05);the hospital ethical climate subscale of“relationship with peers”(b=0.191,P<0.01)was independently associated with the secondary traumatic stress. Conclusions:During the early stage of the pandemic, nurses demonstrated moderate to high level of compassion satisfaction, low to moderate level of burnout, and all nurses experienced secondary traumatic stress.Nurses perceived a high level of hospital ethical climate, and the perceived hospital ethical climate played an important role in promoting nurses’professional quality of life during a lifethreatening infectious disease pandemic. 展开更多

The aim of this study is to analyze how patients with chronic diseases from Shanghai interpret their disease, and how these interpretations influence patients' life satisfaction, intention to escape from their illness and their ability to reflect on the implications of their illness. METHODS: A cross-sectional study enrolling 142 patients (mean age (50 ±16) years; 63% men, 37% women) with chronic diseases (60% cancer) was recruited in the Changhai Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai, China and surveyed using standardized questionnaires. RESULTS: Patients with chronic diseases from Shanghai interpreted their illness mostly as an Adverse Interruption of Life (55%), as a Threat/Enemy (50%), but also as a Challenge (49%), and only rarely as a Call for Help (18%) or as a Punishment (13%). Particularly fatalistic negative (i.e., Threat/Enemy, Adverse Interruption of Life) and strategy-associated disease interpretations (i.e., Relieving Break, Call for Help) were moderately associated with patients' intention to escape from illness. In contrast, positive interpretations (i.e., something of Value, Challenge) and also the guilt-associated negative interpretation Failure were moderately related with patients' ability to reflect on their illness. However, life satisfaction was weakly associated only with the view that illness might be a Challenge. Interestingly, 58% of those who would see their illness as an Adverse Interruption (AI+) could see it also as a Challenge (Ch+). Detailed analyses showed that AI+Ch+ patients differ from their AI+Chcounterparts significantly with respect to their ability to reflect life and implications of illness (F=9.1 ; P=-0.004). 展开更多
