Slow trends in the RR interval(RRI) series should be removed in the preprocessing step to get a reliable result of heart rate variability(HRV) analysis. Re-sampling is required to convert the unevenly sampled RRI series into evenly sampled time series when using the widely accepted smoothness priors approach(SPA). Noise is introduced in this process and the information quality is thus compromised. Empirical mode decomposition(EMD) and its variants, were introduced to directly process the unevenly sampled RRI series. Besides, a RR interval model was proposed to fascinate the introduction of standard metrics for the evaluation of the detrending performance. Based on standard metrics including signal-to-noise-ratio in d B(ISNR), mean square error(EMS), and percent root square difference(DPRS), the effectiveness of detrending methods in RR interval analysis were determined. Results demonstrate that complementary ensemble EMD(CEEMD, a variant of EMD) based method has a higher ISNR, a lower EMS and a lower DPRS as well as a better RRI series detrending performance compared with the SPA method, which would in turn lead to a more accurate HRV analysis. 展开更多

Probability density function (PDF) method is proposed for analysing the structure of the reconstructed attractor in computing the correlation dimensions of RR intervals of ten normal old men. PDF contains important information about the spatial distribution of the phase points in the reconstructed attractor. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that the PDF method is put forward for the analysis of the reconstructed attractor structure. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the cardiac systems of healthy old men are about 6-6.5 dimensional complex dynamical systems. It is found that PDF is not symmetrically distributed when time delay is small, while PDF satisfies Gaussian distribution when time delay is big enough. A cluster effect mechanism is presented to explain this phenomenon. By studying the shape of PDFs, that the roles played by time delay are more important than embedding dimension in the reconstruction is clearly indicated. Results have demonstrated that the PDF method represents a promising numerical approach for the observation of the reconstructed attractor structure and may provide more information and new diagnostic potential of the analyzed cardiac system. 展开更多

Atrial fibrillation(AF) has been considered as a growing epidemiological problem in the world, with a substantial impact on morbidity and mortality.Ambulatory electrocardiography(e.g.,Holter) monitoring is commonly used for AF diagnosis and therapy and the automated detection of AF is of great significance due to the vast amount of information provided. This study presents a combined method to achieve high accuracy in AF detection.Firstly,we detected the suspected transitions between AF and sinus rhythm using the delta RR interval distribution difference curve, which were then classified by a combination analysis of P wave and RR interval. The MIT-BIH AF database was used for algorithm validation and a high sensitivity and a high specificity(98.2% and 97.5%,respectively) were achieved.Further,we developed a dataset of 24-h paroxysmal AF Holter recordings(n=45) to evaluate the performance in clinical practice, which yielded satisfactory accuracy(sensitivity=96.3%,specificity=96.8%). 展开更多

Nowadays, numerous commercial electrocardiographs(ECG) have500 Hz output sampling rate, i.e., 2 ms corresponding sampling interval. Medical workers who have no background of signal processing may worry about whether such low 500 Hz output sampling rate data could support high-precision estimation of electrocardiogram parameters by being up-sampled. With intention to clarify the problem to the medical workers, this paper takes some simulating experiment to illustrate it.The experiment chose the RR interval and R peak amplitude as representative parameters to be estimated. The obtained results were as follows: for RR interval parameter, its estimation error can be lowered to below 0.3 ms by up-sampling; for R peak amplitude, its estimation error can be reduced to below 2.0 μV by up-sampling. It is believed that other ECG parameter estimation can also be improved similarly by up-sampling 500 Hz data. 展开更多
