Rooftop greening not only has ecological benefits such as energy savings, water conservation and air quality improvement but also has aesthetic and social benefits, especially for the rooftops of commercial complexes, which should meet people’s demand for beauty while satisfying sustainable urban development. In this paper, 80 samples of ten commercial rooftops in five old urban areas of Chengdu, China, were selected as the research objects, and the beauty values of different roof types and different plant community types were quantified by the aesthetic evaluation method, and the factors influencing the beauty values were investigated. The results showed that the highest average SBE value was for plant ornamental roofs (0.635), followed by recreational roofs (0.080), and the lowest average SBE value was for sports and fitness (-0.555);Mixed needle-broad communities had the greatest average SBE value (0.330), followed by mixed bamboo-broad communities (0.094), while pure bamboo forests had the lowest average SBE value (-0.716). The rooftop plant community’s aesthetic value was highly significant and correlated positively with the type of roof, the community’s growth type, its vertical structure, and the number of plants in the community. 展开更多

Rooftop gardening or green roof establishment, one of the methods of afforestation for urban greening, has many benefits for the environment, the economy and urban landscapes. Various environmental stresses including heat, strong wind, sunshine and cold prevent most plants from growing well in extensive green roof systems. For the establishment of urban rooftop gardening in Beijing, we evaluated 13 ornamental plant species [Berberis thunbergii ‘Atropurea Nana’, Euonymus fortune (Turcz.) Hand., Viburnum dilatatum Thunb., Cotinus coggygria Scop., Swida alba Opiz., Weigela florida (Bunge.) A. DC., Jasminum nudiflorum Lindl., Euonymus japonicus Thunb., Euonymus japonicus ‘Cuzhi’, Buddleja davidii Franch., Pyracantha fortuneana (Maxim.) Li., Ligustrum lucidum Ait. and Spiraea salicifolia L.] for greening of flat rooftops. We obtained three indices concerning cold resistance, i.e., electrical conductivity of leaves, amounts of soluble sugars and amounts of free proline, providing a theoretical basis for selection of plants fit for roof and balcony greening. The results show that the six species P. fortuneana (Maxim.) Li., B. thunbergii ‘Atropurea Nana’, J. nudiflorum Lindl., E. fortune (Turcz.) Hand., E. japonicus Thunb. and E. japonicus ‘Cuzhi’ are excellent plants for rooftop gardening, judging from their strong ability in cold resistance. Plants such as L. lucidum Ait., C. coggygria Scop. and W. florida (Bunge) A. DC. showed a medium ability in cold resistance. However, these species can be used in roof and balcony greening after intensive management or acclimatization of variety. The ability to resist cold of plants such as W. florida (Bunge) A. DC., S. salicifolia L., V. rhytidophyllum and S. alba Opiz. (Cornus alba L.) was found to be rather weak. Therefore, cold-proof measures are recommended when using these species. 展开更多

This paper proposes a comprehensive framework for estimating the regional rooftop photovoltaic(PV)potential. The required rooftop information is extracted from Gao Fen-7 satellite images. In particular, the rooftop area is obtained using a semantic segmentation network. The azimuth and inclination angles are calculated based on the digital surface model. In addition,to improve the accuracy of the economic evaluation, buildings are divided into commercial and industrial buildings and residential buildings.Based on the difference in the roof inclination, the rooftops can be divided into flat roofs,on which the PV panels are installed with the optimal inclination angle, and sloped rooftops,on which the PV panels are installed in a lay-flat manner. The solar irradiation on the plane-of-array is calculated using the isotropic sky translocation model. Then, the available installed capacity and generation potential of the rooftop PV is obtained. Finally, the net present value, dynamic payback period, and internal rate of return are used to evaluate the economic efficiency of the rooftop PV project. The proposed framework is applied in the Da Xing district of Beijing,China, with a total area of 546.84 km^(2).The results show that the rooftop area and available installed capacity of PV are 25.63 km^(2)and 1487.45 MWp,respectively. The annual rooftop PV generation potential is 2832.23 GWh,with significant economic returns. 展开更多

Accessible water assets are feeling the squeeze because of expanding demand. Soon water, which we have depended upon to be accessible and an unconditional present of nature will turn into a rare product. Protection and conservation of water assets are desperately required. In many parts of Victoria, water supply to communities is limited. Rainwater harvesting systems can provide water at or near the point of demand. The systems can be owner and utility operated and managed. Rainwater collected using existing structures, i.e. rooftops, parking lots, playgrounds, parks, ponds, floodplains etc., has few negative environmental impacts compared to other technologies for water resources development. Rainwater is relatively clean and the quality is usually acceptable for many purposes with little or even no treatment. The physical and chemical properties of rainwater are usually superior to sources of groundwater that may have been subjected to contamination. The present study was intended to measure the rooftop rainwater harvesting potential using GIS techniques. The GIS examination utilized in this investigation was basically an efficient assessment of rooftop water collecting in the chose Wollert which is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria. With the use of GIS it was conceivable to appraise the aggregate sum of water harvestable at the household level. It is very tedious work to assess the catchments available for rooftop rainwater harvesting. Here the roof surfaces are the catchments and GIS is employed to calculate the area of various types of roofs and their potential for planning for the area under study. As a result Eucalypt Estate Wollert has huge potential and can make above 179.11 litres water available per person per day throughout the year. 展开更多

Within the last decade, substantial progress has been achieved in the management of centralized water reticulation in Zambia. Characterized by diversified fiscal resourcing, concurrent institutional restructuring and introduction of new players in water governance, the water sector is set to achieve improved reliability on sustainable grounds. However, the threat of underground water pollution resulting from increased urbanization besides the unreliable energy sector presents new challenges for the current urban water. In effect, urban areas are affected by chronic water rationing creating public stress and insecurity which impacts domestic development. While the course of development has meant investment in the extension and expansion of water infrastructure in Zambia, alternative urban water resources are being sought to address challenges of traditional water systems globally. This paper therefore attempts to make a case for the modernization of Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting (RRWH) as an augmenting water resource in the Zambian urban housing sector. Here—in, it is identified as a Low Impact Development technology within the Integrated Urban Water Management framework currently being forged by local water. Based on a desktop literature survey and online questionnaire survey, an argument to support the development of RRWH in Zambia was developed. While literature survey results revealed evidence of economic loss and a growing compromise to public health resulting from inconsistent water supply in the study area of Lusaka city, the online questionnaire survey depicted significant domestic stress due to erratic water supply. Results confirmed that at one time residents observed an average of eight hours of power blackouts which effectively induced water disruption forcing homeowners to engage in various water storage methods which in turn are costly on domestic time, health and finances. A retrospective discussion based on both survey results attempts to present benefits and opportunities of urban RRWH to water sector stakeholders providing recommendations towards the mainstreaming of the practice in Zambia. 展开更多

This study evaluated the performance of rooftop catchment systems in securing non-potable water supply in Birjand, located in an arid area in southeastern Iran. The rooftop catchment systems at seven study sites of different residential buildings were simulated for dry, normal, and wet water years, using 31-year rainfall records. The trial and error approach and mass diagram method were employed to optimize the volume of reservoirs in five different operation scenarios. Results showed that, during the dry water year from 2000 to 2001, for reservoirs with volumes of 200-20000 L, the proportion of days that could be secured for non-portable water supply was on average computed to be 16.4%-32.6% across all study sites. During the normal water year from 2009 to 2010 and the wet water year from 1995 to 1996, for reservoirs with volumes of 200-20000 L, the proportions were 20.8%-69.6% and 26.8%-80.3%, respectively. Therefore, a rooftop catchment system showed a high potential to meet a significant portion of non-potable water demand in the Birjand climatic region. Reservoir volume optimization using the mass diagram method produced results consistent with those obtained with the trial and error approach, except at sites #1, #2, and #5. At these sites, the trial and error approach performed better than the mass diagram method due to relatively high water consumption. It is concluded that the rooftop catchment system is applicable under the same climatic conditions as the study area, and it can be used as a drought mitigation strategy as well. 展开更多

Indonesia is one of the examples. One of the promising cities to install photovoltaic (PV) systems is Makassar, which has average 5.83 kWh/m2/day of solar irradiance (Meyta, 2011). However, until 2016, there is still no solar panel installation in Makassar (PLN, 2015). In addition, general lack of research in assessing potential of PV systems in Makassar makes PV system difficult to develop. This study therefore set out to assess PV system potential in Makassar which its objectives are to determine 1) total available area for rooftop and large-scale PV systems in Makassar, 2) economy feasibility and 3) environmental impact due to PV installation. Three cases have been analyzed in this study, first, PV systems for residential rooftop, second, PV systems for large-scale (mega solar) in Makassar, and third, PV systems for large scale in outside Makassar and radius 20 km from center of Makassar. ArcGIS10.3 software is carried out to estimate available area for PV installation. Furthermore, RetScreen 4 software was used to conduct PV system capacity and its energy yield and to evaluate economy analysis such as internal rate of return and cost of energy. As the result, the total available area for residential rooftop PV system is evaluated to be 13.8 km2, which potential installed capacity is estimated to be 2044 MW. Total available area for large-scale PV system in Makassar and outside Makassar are 19.3 km2 and 231.3 km2, which estimated 851 MW and 10,179 MW of installed capacity, respectively. 展开更多

Under the many available strategies for the adoption of sustainable practices, the urban agriculture emerges as a relevant alternative.Urban naturation is the vegetative treatment of built surfaces, using plants adapted to the local environmental conditions. The vegetation is a highly relevant element to the regulation and balance of extreme climatic conditions. It also affects buildings thermal comfort and energy use, when assuming functions of control regarding solar radiation, air relative humidity and air movement.Besides the role of climate control, the vegetation can also play a role in food production. The growing of vegetable crops, spices and medicinal herbs has gained the urban spaces of Brazilian cities. The growth of plants at home or in the urban environment, described as productive landscape, becomes one of the few ways of contact with the elements of nature. Therefore, the urban agriculture can create natural spaces in the urban centers, thus, promoting the comfort into two scales:the urban scale and the building scale. On the other hand, the addition of vegetation for food production on built surfaces assumes a multidisciplinary effort. It is needed to technically respond to the suitable choice of substrate and plant species,to the nutrition values of the cultivated foods and, therefore,to the building physics that supports the food production. The aims of this investigation project are:(i)to increase international partnerships in the subject(the Federal University of Pelotas,in Brazil;the Lund and the ALNARP Universities,in Sweden;the Polytechnic University of Madrid,in Spain;and the Arizona State University,in the United States);(ii)to bring information on both the building energy efficiency and the outdoor microclimate as a consequence of the green roof establishment;(iii)to generate a cultivation guide for food production on rooftops. Thus, this paper presents the first step of the research interdisciplinary approach, which deals with the construction of the Cultivation Guide for Rooftop Farmings.Through a literature review, data from 19 food plant species were compiled to inform their proper growth and management.Additionally the same data will be used as the inputs for the modelling of the outdoor microclimate and indoor thermal comfort provided by those species.Exemplifying results in the form of synthesis tables, this paper shows the data of substrate and vegetation for two vegetable species:lettuce and tomato. 展开更多

The feasibility of rooftop rainwater harvesting (RRWH) as an alternative source of water to meet the outdoor water demand in nine states of the U.S. was evaluated using a system dynamics model developed in Systems Thinking, Experimental Learning Laboratory with Animation. The state of Arizona was selected to evaluate the effects of the selected model parameters on the efficacy of RRWH since among the nine states the arid region of Arizona showed the least potential of meeting the outdoor water demand with rain harvested water. The analyses were conducted on a monthly basis across a 10-year projected period from 2015 to 2024. The results showed that RRWH as a potential source of water was highly sensitive to certain model parameters such as the outdoor water demand, the use of desert landscaping, and the percentage of existing houses with RRWH. A significant difference (as high as 37.5%) in rainwater potential was observed between the projected wet and dry climate conditions in Arizona. The analysis of the dynamics of the storage tanks suggested that a 1.0-2.0 m3 rainwater barrel, on an average, can store approximately 80% of the monthly rainwater generated from the rooftops in Arizona, even across the high seasonal variation. This interactive model can be used as a quick estimator of the amount of water that could be generated, stored, and utilized through RRWH systems in the U.S. under different climate conditions. The findings of such comprehensive analyses may help regional policymakers, especially in arid regions, to develop a sustainable water management infrastructure. 展开更多
