Objective:The aim of the study was to evaluate the quality of sleep in nurses performing shift work in therapeutic and surgical depar tments and to establish possible relationships between level of blood pressure(BP)and quality of sleep. Methods:A total of 20 nurses of the therapeutic depar tments and 20 nurses of the surgical depar tments were enrolled in the study.Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI).BP was measured according to the standard protocol using the Korotkoff method;a sphygmomanometer was used for this twice with an interval of 2 min between 10:00 a.m.and 10:30 a.m.The average value for the 2 indicators was calculated. The diagnosis of essential ar terial hyper tension(AH)was established according to the recommendations of the European Association of Cardiology and the European Association of Hypertension(2018).Results:The overall assessment of the sleep quality of the nurses involved in shift work indicates poor sleep quality;this was true in respondents of both the surgical and therapeutic profiles. However,it was observed that the quality of sleep was significantly lower in nurses of the therapeutic departments. Moreover, poor sleep quality was associated with AH,which was diagnosed in 65%of the nurses of the therapeutic departments and 45%of the nurses of the surgical departments, that is,in almost all of the subjects.Herewith,in the nurses of the therapeutic departments, the level of systolic BP exceeded that of the nurses of the surgical departments. Conclusions:Poor sleep quality is a significant risk factor for AH development and is relevant to nurses performing shift work.Additional clinical studies should be conducted to better understand the mechanisms underlying such adverse cardiometabolic outcomes associated with sleep disorders in the health-sector shift workers. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Hematological tumors are common malignant tumors, with high morbidity and mortality rates. Most patients with hematological malignancies develop sleep disorders that seriously affect their life and health because of acute onset of disease, rapid progression, high recurrence rates, complex treatment methods, and treatment costs.AIM To explore the mediating effect of resilience on fear of disease progression and sleep quality in patients with hematological malignancies.METHODS A cross-sectional analysis of 100 patients with hematological malignancies, treated in the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinzhou Medical University between August 2022 and August 2023,was conducted.Patients were assessed using a general data survey,a simplified scale for the fear of progression(FoP)of disease,a resilience scale, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index.Statistical analysis was conducted to determine the relationship between various patient characteristics and FoP,resilience, and sleep quality.Spearman’s correlation analysis was used to examine the correlations between mental resilience,FoP,and sleep quality.RESULTS The total FoP score mean value in patients with hematological malignancies was 38.09±5.16;the total resilience score mean value was 40.73±7.04;and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score mean value was 10.72±1.90.FoP,resilience,and sleep quality of the patients were associated with family per capita monthly income and patient education level(P<0.05).Spearman correlation analysis revealed that FoP was negatively correlated with resilience and sleep quality scores(r=-0.560,-0.537,P<0.01),respectively,and resilience was significantly associated with sleep quality scores(r=0.688,P<0.01).Mediation analysis showed that the mediating effect of resilience between FoP and sleep quality in patients with hematological malignancies was-0.100 and accounted for 50.51%of the total effect. This indicated that FoP directly and indirectly affected sleep quality through the mesomeric effect of resilience.CONCLUSION Resilience is an intermediary variable between FoP and sleep quality in patients with hematological malignancies.Medical staff should evaluate and follow-up FoP and resilience to implement measures to improve sleep quality. 展开更多

Design: A descriptive correlation design using self-administered surveys. Methods: Questionnaires on stress, fatigue and sleep quality (the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index;PSQI-J) among shift work nurses were distributed to 653 nurses in Japan from January 2015 to February 2015. Results: Participants who reported higher levels of fatigue reported higher levels of stress (r = 0.774, p = 0.000), lower levels of sleep satisfaction (r = −0.411, p = 0.000) and overall lower levels of health (r = −0.323, p = 0.000).PSQI scores were also significantly correlated with reported levels of stress (r = 0.294, p = 0.000), fatigue (r = 0.291, p = 0.000) and levels of health (r = −0.370, p = 0.000). Nurses who have stress-relieving recourses were younger (t = −2.842, p = 0.005), reported higher levels of overall health (t = 2.727, p = 0.007), had higher levels of sleep quality measured by the PSQI (t = −2.560, p = 0.011), and required less time to fall asleep (t = −3.207, p = 0.001). Conclusions: This study showed an association between stress and sleep satisfaction among shift work nurses in Japan. In addition, nurses that engage in activities to manage stress might achieve higher levels of health and high sleep quality. 展开更多

Deficient sleep quality (SQ) has been linked with a higher hospitalization rate and mortality in dialysis patients, however the prevalence of sleep disorders and their influence on prognosis in non-dialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been poorly investigated. The aim of this study was to assess factors related with SQ in CKD patients (stages I-IV) followed in a nephrology outpatient clinic as well as the long-term impact of SQ on patient’s outcome. Between January and May 2008, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was self-administered by 122 patients (68 males and 54 females) with a mean age of 65 years. Patients were classified as “good” (global PSQI < 6) and “poor” sleepers (global PSQI ≥ 6). We identified 66 (54%) poor sleepers (PS), characterized by an older age (66 ± 14.2 vs 57 ± 17.0, p < 0.01), female predominance (59% vs 26%, p < 0.01) and worse renal function (49 ± 19.1 vs 57 ± 23.2 ml/min, p < 0.05). There was a significant correlation between phosphate and PSQI score (r = 0.234, p = 0.01), however no correlation with calcium or PTH. Vitamin D was also lower in PS (17 ± 7.2 vs 23 ± 15.1 ng/ml, p < 0.05). Until June 2015, hospitalization rate was higher among PS (64% vs 44%, p < 0.05). In this period, there was also a trend towards higher mortality for PS (18% vs 16%). In summary, over 50% of CKD patients have poor SQ, which was associated with older age, female gender, worse renal function, lower vitamin D and higher phosphate levels. Deficient sleep was associated with a greater probability of hospitalization and might be a prognostic marker in CKD. 展开更多

AIM: To analyse the association of sleep quality with myopia under different genetic risk(GR) levels.METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of students aged 9-14 y in Wenzhou, China, was conducted. Refraction without cycloplegia and ocular parameters were measured. Sleep quality was assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI). Seventeen single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs) were replicated by association analysis and used to compute the GR score(GRS). Possible confounders were assessed by a questionnaire that collected information about the children and their parents. Generalized linear models were used to analyse the sleep quality, the GR, and their interaction effects on the risk of myopia.RESULTS: Out of 1354 children included in this study, 353(26.07%) had sleep disturbances. The GRS ranged from 4.49 to 12.89 with a mean of 7.74±1.23, and the participants were divided into a low GR group, a moderate GR group and a high GR group according to the GRS quartile. In the generalized linear model, the children with sleep disturbances and high GR had a higher risk of myopia than those without sleep disturbances and with low GR(OR=1.59, 95%CI: 1.12-2.25;OR=1.88, 95%CI: 1.23-2.88, respectively). Compared to those with low GR and SDs, children with high GR with or without SDs had a higher risk of myopia(OR=4.88, 95%CI: 2.03-11.71;OR=1.70, 95%CI: 1.06-2.72, respectively).CONCLUSION: The prevalence of sleep disturbances in elementary school students in Wenzhou was 26.07%. There is a significant interaction between sleep disturbances and a high GR of myopia, suggesting that a high GR of myopia may increase children’s sensitivity to sleep disturbances. This study indicates that children with a high GR of myopia need to achieve adequate sleep duration and excellent sleep quality. 展开更多

Aims:The aim of this article is to explore the relation of sleep quality, anxiety status, fatigue level and psychological resilience among rotating‑shift nurses, thus,to propose solutions and promote physical and psychological health of shift nurses. Methods:The cross‑sectional survey was performed on 263 clinical nurses recruited from three tertiary hospitals of Xinxiang City,Henan Province,China from October 2017 to June 2018.The questionnaire survey was conducted using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI)for measuring nurses’sleep quality, connor‑davidson resilience scale(CD‑RISC)for measuring their psychological resilience, self‑rating anxiety scale(SAS)for measuring their anxiety status, and Fatigue‑14 Scale for measuring their fatigue. The relationship among above indicators were analysed using Pearson correlation analysis. The mediating effect of psychological resilience on the process of sleep quality impacting anxiety and fatigue was analyzed using Wen’s causual steps method and linear regression. Results:The mean CD‑RISC score of shift nurses was 57.76±11.90,which indicated that resilience level was at a medium level. The mean of PSQI,SAS and total fatigue score was(7.53±2.83),(50.56±9.57)and(7.81±9.42),respectively.Resilience could negatively predict the anxiety state(β=−0.366,P<0.01)and fatigue(β=−0.197,P<0.01).Sleep quality could positively predict anxiety(β=0.395,P<0.01)and fatigue level(β=0.495,P<0.01)for shift nurses. The mediating effects of resilience upon sleep quality and anxiety or fatigue was 0.044 and 0.026,respectively.Conclusion:The resilience could fuel sleep quality and reduce the occurrence of negative emotion and fatigue among shift nurses. 展开更多

Objective:The objective was to investigate the relationship between resilience, illness uncertainty, and sleep quality in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM).Methods:This cross‑sectional study was conducted from September 2019 to August 2020 from a tertiary hospital in Guangzhou,China.Totally,205 participants completed questionnaires concerning demographic characteristics,Pittsburgh sleep quality index,Mishel uncertainty in illness scale(MUIS),and Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale(CD‑RISR)were collected by convenience sampling.Multiple hierarchical regression analysis was used to evaluate the interaction of illness uncertainty, resilience, and sleep quality. The mediating role of resilience was also tested. Results:The total score of illness uncertainty was 94.68±11.19 in T2DM patients, which was proved in the medium level. There was a significant negative correlation between the total CD‑RISR score and total MUIS score(r=−0.716,P<0.01);there was a significant negative correlation between the total CD‑RISR score and total PISQ score(r=−0.806,P<0.01);total MUIS score was positively correlated with PISQ score(r=0.872,P<0.01).Psychological resilience could partially mediate the association between sleep quality and the level of illness uncertainty, and the mediating effect was 0.293,accounting for 34.20%of the total effect. Conclusion:Patients with T2DM have a moderate level of illness uncertainty, and it was negatively correlated with mental resilience level and positively associated with sleep quality.Medical staff should strengthen psychological intervention for T2DM patients to reduce the sense of uncertainty. 展开更多

Objective: Sleep complaints are recurrent in Geriatrics and are often attributed to physiological aging. The aim of this work is to describe subjective sleep quality and its impact on successful aging. Methods: Subjective sleep quality was evaluated by using the Pittsburgh subjective sleep quality questionnaire. Two visual analogical scales (graduate from 0 to 10) were used to quantify perceived state of health and life satisfaction. Objective respiratory sleep parameters were also collected. Results: 370 data were analysed (46.2% of males). The average age was 73.2 +/- 1. The level of perceived state of health was 6.9 +/- 2, and life satisfaction level was 7.7 +/-2. Subjective sleep quality was significantly related to perceived health status (p = 0.034) and life satisfaction (p = 0.005). There was no significant association between sleep quality and objective respiratory sleep parameters. Conclusion: The assessment of sleep quality plays an important role in the management of elderly persons and can help them to age more successfully. 展开更多
