Secondary steady-state and time-periodic flows from a basic flow with square array of odd number of vortices

In a magnetohydrodynamic(MHD)driven fluid cell,a plane non-parallel flow in a square domain satisfying a free-slip boundary condition is examined.The energy dissipation of the flow is controlled by the viscosity and linear friction.The latter arises from the influence of the Hartmann bottom boundary layer in a three-dimensional(3D)MHD experiment in a square bottomed cell.The basic flow in this fluid system is a square eddy flow exhibiting a network of N~2 vortices rotating alternately in clockwise and anticlockwise directions.When N is odd,the instability of the flow gives rise to secondary steady-state flows and secondary time-periodic flows,exhibiting similar characteristics to those observed when N=3.For this reason,this study focuses on the instability of the square eddy flow of nine vortices.It is shown that there exist eight bi-critical values corresponding to the existence of eight neutral eigenfunction spaces.Especially,there exist non-real neutral eigenfunctions,which produce secondary time-periodic flows exhibiting vortices merging in an oscillatory manner.This Hopf bifurcation phenomenon has not been observed in earlier investigations. 展开更多

Semi-analytical steady-state response prediction for multi-dimensional quasi-Hamiltonian systems

The majority of nonlinear stochastic systems can be expressed as the quasi-Hamiltonian systems in science and engineering. Moreover, the corresponding Hamiltonian system offers two concepts of integrability and resonance that can fully describe the global relationship among the degrees-of-freedom(DOFs) of the system. In this work, an effective and promising approximate semi-analytical method is proposed for the steady-state response of multi-dimensional quasi-Hamiltonian systems. To be specific, the trial solution of the reduced Fokker–Plank–Kolmogorov(FPK) equation is obtained by using radial basis function(RBF) neural networks. Then, the residual generated by substituting the trial solution into the reduced FPK equation is considered, and a loss function is constructed by combining random sampling technique. The unknown weight coefficients are optimized by minimizing the loss function through the Lagrange multiplier method. Moreover, an efficient sampling strategy is employed to promote the implementation of algorithms. Finally, two numerical examples are studied in detail, and all the semi-analytical solutions are compared with Monte Carlo simulations(MCS) results. The results indicate that the complex nonlinear dynamic features of the system response can be captured through the proposed scheme accurately. 展开更多

We propose an adaptive stencil construction for high-order accurate finite volume schemes a posteriori stabilized devoted to solve one-dimensional steady-state hyperbolic equations.High accuracy(up to the sixth-order presently)is achieved,thanks to polynomial recon-structions while stability is provided with an a posteriori MOOD method which controls the cell polynomial degree for eliminating non-physical oscillations in the vicinity of dis-continuities.We supplemented this scheme with a stencil construction allowing to reduce even further the numerical dissipation.The stencil is shifted away from troubles(shocks,discontinuities,etc.)leading to less oscillating polynomial reconstructions.Experimented on linear,Burgers',and Euler equations,we demonstrate that the adaptive stencil technique manages to retrieve smooth solutions with optimal order of accuracy but also irregular ones without spurious oscillations.Moreover,we numerically show that the approach allows to reduce the dissipation still maintaining the essentially non-oscillatory behavior. 展开更多

Neuropathy is nerve damage that can cause chronic neuropathic pain, which is challenging to cure and has a significant financial burden. Exercise therapies, including High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and steady-state cardio, are being explored as potential treatments for neuropathic pain. This systematic review compares the effectiveness of HIIT and steady-state cardio for improving function in neurological patients. This article provides an overview of the systematic review conducted on the effects of exercise on neuropathic patients, with a focus on high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and steady-state cardio. The authors conducted a comprehensive search of various databases, identified relevant studies based on predetermined inclusion criteria, and used the EPPI automation application to process the data. The final selection of studies was based on validity and relevance, with redundant articles removed. The article reviews four studies that compare high-intensity interval training (HIIT) to moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) on various health outcomes. The studies found that HIIT can improve aerobic fitness, cerebral blood flow, and brain function in stroke patients;lower diastolic blood pressure more than MICT and improve insulin sensitivity and skeletal muscle mitochondrial content in obese individuals, potentially helping with the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes. In people with multiple sclerosis, acute exercise can decrease the plasma neurofilament light chain while increasing the flow of the kynurenine pathway. The available clinical and preclinical data suggest that further study on high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and its potential to alleviate neuropathic pain is justified. Randomized controlled trials are needed to investigate the type, intensity, frequency, and duration of exercise, which could lead to consensus and specific HIIT-based advice for patients with neuropathies. 展开更多

We observed the steady-state visually evoked potential(SSVEP) from a healthy subject using a compact quad-channel potassium spin exchange relaxation-free(SERF) optically pumped magnetometer(OPM). To this end, 30 s of data were collected, and SSVEP-related magnetic responses with signal intensity ranging from 150 fT to 300 f T were observed for all four channels. The corresponding signal to noise ratio(SNR) was in the range of 3.5–5.5. We then used different channels to operate the sensor as a gradiometer. In the specific case of detecting SSVEP, we noticed that the short channel separation distance led to a strongly diminished gradiometer signal. Although not optimal for the case of SSVEP detection, this set-up can prove to be highly useful for other magnetoencephalography(MEG) paradigms that require good noise cancellation.Considering its compactness, low cost, and good performance, the K-SERF sensor has great potential for biomagnetic field measurements and brain-computer interfaces(BCI). 展开更多

The wind effects on steady-state scan characteristics and hit probability of terminal-sensitive projectile were discussed in this paper. Considering wind as the constitutions of the average wind and the impulsive wind, a simplified wind field model was established for the ballistic calculation of the steady-state scan phase; under the windy condition, the effects of the range wind and the beam wind on the steady-state scan characteristics of the terminal-sensitive projectile were analyzed in detail and its hit probabilities for a certain armored target were calculated. The calculated results show that, when the wind speed exceeds a certain value, the hit probabilities of terminal-sensitive projectile drop rapidly; the wind effects must be considered in the application of the terminal-sensitive projectiles. This paper provides some theoretical references for the fire wind speed correction and the global structure optimization of the terminal-sensitive projectile. 展开更多

We study the steady-state entanglement and heat current of two coupled qubits, in which two qubits are connected with two independent heat baths(IHBs) or two common heat baths(CHBs). We construct the master equation in the eigenstate representation of two coupled qubits to describe the dynamics of the total system and derive the solutions in the steadystate with stronger coupling regime between two qubits than qubit–baths. We do not make the rotating wave approximation(RWA) for the qubit–qubit interaction, and so we are able to investigate the behaviors of the system in both the strong coupling regime and the weak coupling regime, respectively. In an equilibrium bath, we find that the entanglement decreases with the bath temperature and energy detuning increasing under the strong coupling regime. In the weak coupling regime,the entanglement increases with coupling strength increasing and decreases with the bath temperature and energy detuning increasing. In a nonequilibrium bath, the entanglement without RWA is useful for entanglement at lower temperatures.We also study the heat currents of the two coupled qubits and their variations with the energy detuning, coupling strength and low temperature. In the strong(weak) coupling regime, the heat current increases(decreases) with coupling strength increasing when the temperature of one bath is lower(higher) than the other, and the energy detuning leads to a positive(negative) effect when the temperature is low(high). In the weak coupling regime, the variation trend of heat current is opposite to that of coupling strength for the IHB case and the CHB case. 展开更多

A systematic approach for the steady-state operation analysis of chemical processes is pro-posed.The method affords the possibility of taking operation resilience into consideration during thestage of process design.It may serve the designer as an efficient means for the initial screening ofalternative design schemes.An ideal heat integrated distillation column(HIDiC),without any reboileror condenser attached,is studied throughout this work.It has been found that among the various va-riables concerned with the ideal HIDiC,feed thermal condition appears to be the only factor exertingsignificant influences on the interaction between the top and the bottom control loops.Maximuminteraction is expected when the feed thermal condition approaches 0.5.Total number of stages andheat transfer rate are essential to the system ability of disturbance rejection.Therefore,more stagesand higher heat transfer rate ought to be preferred.But,too many stages and higher heat transfer ratemay increase the load of the 展开更多

Steady-state heat transfer problems in heterogeneous solid are simulated by developing an adaptive extended isogeometric analysis(XIGA)method based on locally refined non-uniforms rational B-splines(LR NURBS).In the XIGA,the LR NURBS,which have a simple local refinement algorithm and good description ability for complex geometries,are employed to represent the geometry and discretize the field variables;and some special enrichment functions are introduced into the approximation of temperature field,thus the computational mesh is independent of the material interfaces,which are described with the level setmethod.Similar to the approximation of temperature field,a temperature gradient recovery technique for heterogeneous media is proposed,and based on the Zienkiewicz–Zhu recovery technique a posteriori error estimator is defined to automatically identify the locally refined regions.The convergence and performance properties of the developed method are verified by using three numerical examples.The numerical results show that(1)The convergence speed of the adaptive local refinement is faster than that of the uniform global refinement;(2)The convergence rate of the high-order basis functions is faster than that of the low-order basis functions;and(3)The existing inclusions change the local distributions of the temperature,and the extreme values of the temperature gradients take place around the inclusion interfaces. 展开更多

A new type of high-order multi-resolution weighted essentially non-oscillatory(WENO)schemes(Zhu and Shu in J Comput Phys,375:659-683,2018)is applied to solve for steady-state problems on structured meshes.Since the classical WENO schemes(Jiang and Shu in J Comput Phys,126:202-228,1996)might suffer from slight post-shock oscillations(which are responsible for the residue to hang at a truncation error level),this new type of high-order finite-difference and finite-volume multi-resolution WENO schemes is applied to control the slight post-shock oscillations and push the residue to settle down to machine zero in steady-state simulations.This new type of multi-resolution WENO schemes uses the same large stencils as that of the same order classical WENO schemes,could obtain fifth-order,seventh-order,and ninth-order in smooth regions,and could gradually degrade to first-order so as to suppress spurious oscillations near strong discontinuities.The linear weights of such new multi-resolution WENO schemes can be any positive numbers on the condition that their sum is one.This is the first time that a series of unequal-sized hierarchical central spatial stencils are used in designing high-order finitedifference and finite-volume WENO schemes for solving steady-state problems.In comparison with the classical fifth-order finite-difference and finite-volume WENO schemes,the residue of these new high-order multi-resolution WENO schemes can converge to a tiny number close to machine zero for some benchmark steady-state problems. 展开更多

Background: Both glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency and sickle cell disease (SCD) are prevalent in malaria-endemic regions. Controversy however persists as to whether G6PD deficiency is commoner in SCD subjects compared with the general population. Co-existence of the enzyme-deficient state with a chronic haemolytic disorder, like SCD, could potentially predispose to fatal haemolytic episodes. There is however a dearth of paediatric studies on this subject. Aims and Objectives: To determine the prevalence and demographic determinants of G6PD deficiency in children with SCD. Methods: Red cell G6PD activity was determined in 115 steady-state sickle cell disease children aged 0.5 - 17 years, in steady state and equal number of age & gender-matched non-SCD controls using the quantitative method. A measured G6PD activity of U/gHb defined G6PD deficiency while values ≥6.97 U/gHb were regarded as normal. Data were analysed using SPSS version 20. Statistical analyses done include chi-square, student t-test and ANOVA. For all statistical analyses, p values less than 0.05 were considered significant. Results: There were 64 (55.7%) males and 51 (44.3%) females in each of the arms of the study. The mean age of the study population was 8.4 ± 4.7 years. Seven of the subjects were G6PD-deficient giving a prevalence of 6.1% which was not significantly different from the 7.0% obtained in the controls (p = 0.789). G6PD deficiency was more frequently encountered in the older age groups although the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.438). Similarly, mean G6PD activity was highest in the under-5 age-group compared to the older age-groups analysed (p = 0.573). The condition was also commoner in the males than females although the difference did not attain statistical significance (p = 0.897). Conclusions: The prevalence of G6PD deficiency among SCD children was 6.1%. The condition is marginally commoner in males and older children. 展开更多

Accurate simulation of water distillation system for oxygen-18(18O) isotope separation is necessary to guide industrial practice, since both deuterium(D) and oxygen-18 isotope get enriched and interfere with each other. In the present work, steady-state and dynamic distillation models are established based on a classic method and a cascade distillation system with 5 towers is introduced to test the models. The theoretical expressions of separation factor αH/Dfor protium/deuterium and separation factor α^(16)O/^(18) O.for oxygen-16/oxygen-18 were derived,with the existence of deuterium and oxygen-18, respectively. The results of the steady-state simulation by the classical method proposed in the present work agreed well with the results of the lumping method. The dynamic process could be divided into 5 stages. Impressively, a peak value of product withdraw was observed before the final steady state, which was resulted from the change of ^(16)O/^(18) O separation factor and isotope distribution. An interesting low concentration zone in the towers of T2–T5 existed at the beginning of the dynamic process and it required industrial evidence. 展开更多

We present a dissipative scheme to generate an entangled steady-state between two superconducting transmon qutrits separately embedded in two coupled transmission line resonators in a circuit quantum electrodynamics(QED)setup.In our scheme,the resonant qutrit-resonator interaction and photon hopping between resonators jointly induce asymmetric energy gaps in the dressed state subspaces.The coherent driving fields induce the specific dressed state transition and the dissipative processes lead to the gradual accumulation in the population of target state,combination of both drives the system into a steady-state entanglement.Numerical simulation shows that the maximally entangled state can be produced with high fidelity and strong robustness against the cavity decay and qutrit decay,and no requirements for accurate time control.The scheme is achievable with the current experimental technologies. 展开更多

Based on the theories of conventional electrodes, as well as the properties of microdisk electrode, the i-E equations for chronoamperometry at disk microelectrode for reversible, quasi-reversible and irreversible systems are derived. Steady-state voltammograms for the oxidation of [Fe(CN)6]4- , Fe2+ and ascorbic acid were measured at a series of microdisk electrodes with different radii. The conventional log-plot shows that oxidations of [Fe(CN)6]4- and ascorbic acid are reversible and totally irreversible, respectively, but the oxidation of Fe2+ is reversible at larger radius microdisk electrodes and quasi-reversible at smaller radius microdisk electrodes. The application of the log-plot to the voltammograms yielded a straight line, its slope allows us to evaluate the charge transfer coefficient and the intercept gives values of the electron transfer rate constant. 展开更多

A Newton multigrid method is developed for one-dimensional(1D) and twodimensional(2D) steady-state shallow water equations(SWEs) with topography and dry areas. The nonlinear system arising from the well-balanced finite volume discretization of the steady-state SWEs is solved by the Newton method as the outer iteration and a geometric multigrid method with the block symmetric Gauss-Seidel smoother as the inner iteration. The proposed Newton multigrid method makes use of the local residual to regularize the Jacobian matrix of the Newton iteration, and can handle the steadystate problem with wet/dry transition. Several numerical experiments are conducted to demonstrate the efficiency, robustness, and well-balanced property of the proposed method. The relation between the convergence behavior of the Newton multigrid method and the distribution of the eigenvalues of the iteration matrix is detailedly discussed. 展开更多
