A new phenomenon that a filament discharged only once instead of twice in a cycle of the applied voltage is observed in a square grid pattern in a dielectric barrier discharge(DBD)with a larger gas gap,which is named intermittent discharge.Its spatiotemporal dynamics and the formation mechanism are studied by the multiple photomultiplier tubes and an intensified charge-coupled device.Corresponding to the positions of spots in the picture with an exposure time of 40 ms,there are some bright spots(discharge spots)and black spots(non-discharged spots)in the instantaneous image with an exposure time of 10μs(a half cycle of the applied voltage).There are at least two bright spots around one black spot and vice versa.The surface discharges(SDS)can be observed between any two adjacent spots.The intensity of the SDSbetween the bright spot and the black spot is 2.5 times greater than that between two adjacent bright spots,which indicates that the SDSare directional-selective.The intermittent discharge with positive(negative)current polarity changes to that with negative(positive)current polarity,after it sustains up to 14 voltage cycles at the longest.The spatial distribution of the electric field component is calculated through COMSOL software to solve the Poisson equation numerically.It is found that the inhomogeneous distribution of surface electric field is caused by the inhomogeneous distribution of wall charges,which leads to direction-selective SDS.The intermittent discharge is formed by the competition between the direction-selective SDSand volume discharges(VDS)in DBD.This is the reason why the intermittent discharge is generated. 展开更多

Bacterial and chemical contaminations of drinking water imperil the health of people.A reactive species injection method is presented for sterilizing drinking water.To produce reactive species,a gas phase surface discharge reactor(SDR)is designed:a spiral stainless steel wire attached on the inside wall of a quartz glass tube is used as the high voltage electrode,and the drinking water is the ground electrode.The performance and mechanisms of the method in inactivating of Escherichia coli(E.coli)are analyzed.Experimental results show that 500 mL E.coli-contaminated drinking water(108CFU/mL)is completely sterilized within 4 min.Based on the scanning electron microscope(SEM)analysis,there were plasma-induced cell structure damages of the E.coli in the sterilized water,and the damage resulted in the leakage of protein,which was proved by chemical analyses.Meanwhile,the heating effect concomitantly generated by discharge plasma does not influence E.coli inactivation,and the contribution of direct ultraviolet(UV)irradiation could be neglected too.The ozone generated by SDR and the hydroxyl radicals(·OH)subsequently generated in drinking water play the decisive roles in E.coli inactivation because these reactive species cause the cell rupture. 展开更多

Polyimide(PI)film is an important type of insulating material used in inverter-fed motors.Partial discharge(PD)under a sequence of high-frequency square impulses is one of the key factors that lead to premature failures in insulation systems of inverter-fed motors.In order to explore the damage mechanism of PI film caused by discharge,an aging system of surface discharge under bipolar continuous square impulse voltage(BCSIV)is designed based on the ASTM 227501 standard and the electrical aging tests of PI film samples are performed above the partial discharge inception voltage(PDIV).The chemical bonds of PI polymer chains are analyzed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR)and the dielectric properties of unaged and aged PI samples are investigated by LCR testers HIOKI 3532-50.Finally,the micro-morphology and micro-structure changes of PI film samples are observed through scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The results show that the physical and chemical effects of discharge cut off the chemical bonds of PI polymer chains.The fractures of ether bond(C–O–C)and imide ring(C–N–C)on the backbone of a PI polymer chain leads to the decrease of molecular weight,which results in the degradation of PI polymers and the generation of new chemical groups and materials,like carboxylic acid,ketone,aldehydes,etc.The variation of microscopic structure of PI polymers can change the orientation ability of polarizable units when the samples are under an AC electric field,which would cause the dielectric constantεto increase and dielectric loss tanδto decrease.The SEM images show that the degradation path of PI film is initiated from the surface and then gradually extends to the interior with continuous aging.The injection charge could result in the PI macromolecular chain degradation and increase the trap density in the PI polymer bulk. 展开更多

The hollow hexagonal pattern involved in surface discharges is firstly investigated in a?dielectric barrier discharge system. The spatiotemporal structures of the pattern are studied using an intensified charge-coupled device and photomultiplier. Instantaneous images taken by an intensified charge-coupled device and optical correlation measurements show that the surface discharges are induced by volume discharges. The optical signals indicate that the discharge filaments constituting the hexagonal frame discharge randomly at the first current pulse or the second pulse, once?or twice. There is no?interleaving of several sub-lattices, which indicates that the ‘memory' effect is no longer in force due to surface discharges. By using the emission spectrum method, both the molecule vibration temperature?and electron density of the surface discharges are larger than that of the volume discharges. 展开更多

A dielectric barrier surface discharge device was used to investigate the transitionfrom a filamentary discharge to a glow discharge in air at different gas pressures.Dischargeimages and waveforms of the applied voltage and discharge current were recorded simultaneously,and it was found that the discharge could transit from filamentary to glow with the decrease inpressure.Optical emission spectra during the transition from a filamentary discharge to a glowone were recorded.Excited electron temperature can be determined from the ratios of the relativeintensities of spectral lines while molecular vibration temperature can be measured by analysingspectral lines of the N_2 second positive band system.The results show that both the excitedtemperature and molecular vibration temperature increase with the decrease in the gas pressure.Qualitative explanations are given. 展开更多

For high conductivity water treatment,water-surface discharge is the preferred choice.However. the metallic electrodes are easily corroded because of the high temperature and strong oxidative environment caused by gas phase discharge and the electrochemical reaction in water.As a result. the efficiency of the water treatment might be affected and the service life of the reactor might be shortened.In order to avoid the corrosion problem,nonmetallic electrode water-surface discharge is introduced into high conductivity water treatment in the present study.Carbon-felt and water were used as the high voltage electrode and ground electrode,respectively.A comparison of the electrical and chemical characteristics showed that nonmetallic electrode discharge maintained the discharge characteristics and enhanced the energy efficiency,and furthermore,the corrosion of metal electrodes was avoided. 展开更多

A gas-phase surface discharge(GSD)was employed to optimize the discharge reactor structure and investigate the dye degradation.A dye mixture of methylene blue,acid orange and methyl orange was used as a model pollutant.The results indicated that the reactor structure of the GSD system with the ratio of tube inner surface area and volume of 2.48,screw pitch between a high-voltage electrode of 9.7 mm,high-voltage electrode wire diameter of 0.8 mm,dielectric tube thickness of2.0 mm and tube inner diameter of 16.13 mm presented a better ozone(O_3)generation efficiency.Furthermore,a larger screw pitch and smaller wire diameter enhanced the O_3generation.After the dye mixture degradation by the optimized GSD system,73.21%and 50.74%of the chemical oxygen demand(COD)and total organic carbon removal rate were achieved within 20 min,respectively,and the biochemical oxygen demand(BOD)and biodegradability(BOD/COD)improved. 展开更多

Accelerated insulation aging problems under high frequency repetitive impulses in power electronic transformers are drawing more and more attention in modern power systems. Partial discharge (PD) characteristics including discharge inception voltage, phase distribution and statistical characteristics on polyimide (PI) surface under different impulse waveforms and the insulation life of PI films are studied in this paper. We carry out experiments based on PD and insulation lifetime test systems, using five different types of repetitive impulses, including three bipolar waves and two unipolar waves. The experimental results show that there is little variation in discharge inception voltage under different waveforms, but great variation in phase distribution and statistical characteristics of PD. In addition, insulation life is approximately the same under different waveforms with the same polarity, and the aging rate under bipolar waveforms is larger than that under unipolar waveforms. We explain the differences between the bipolar and unipolar waveforms on insulation life, which can be concluded that the surface charge under unipolar waveform accumulates more significnatly compared with bipolar waveform and decreases the electric filed strength in discharging the air gap and inhibits surface discharge from occurring. 展开更多

The degradation of phenol by pulsed discharge plasma above a liquid surface(APDP) and under a liquid surface(UPDP) was compared.The effects of discharge voltage,discharge distance,initial solution conductivity and initial p H on the removal of phenol were studied.It was concluded that the removal of phenol increases with increasing discharge voltage and with decreasing discharge distance in both APDP and UPDP systems.An increase in the initial solution’s conductivity has a positive effect in the APDP system but a negative effect in the UPDP system.In addition,alkaline conditions are conducive to the degradation of phenol in the APDP system,while acidic conditions are conducive in the UPDP system.Free radical quenching experiments revealed that ·O-2has an important influence on the degradation of phenol in the APDP system,while ·OH plays a key role in the UPDP system.This paper verifies the differences in the two discharge methods in terms of phenol removal. 展开更多

Improving energy efficiency in plasma NO removal is a critical issue.When the surface dielectric barrier discharge(SDBD)device is considered as a combination of multiple plasma actuators,the induced plasma aerodynamic effect cannot be ignored,which can affect the mass transfer,then affect the chemical reactions.Five SDBD devices with different electrode arrangements are studied for NO conversion.They correspond to different flow patterns.We find that the energy efficiency in an SDBD device with a common structure(Type 1)is 28%lower than that in SDBD devices with a special arrangement(Types 2–5).Two reasons may explain the results.First,fewer active species are produced in Type 1 because the development of discharge is hindered by the mutually exclusive electric field forces caused by the symmetrically distributed charged particles.Second,the plasma wind induced by the plasma actuator can enhance the mass and heat transfer.The mixing of reactants and products is better in Types 2–5 than Type 1 due to higher turbulence kinetic energy. 展开更多

Surface hydrophilicity improvement of titanium(Ti)is of great significance for the applications of the important biomaterial.In this study,efficient hydrophilicity on the Ti surface is improved by an air plasma jet generated by a microhollow cathode discharge(MHCD)geometry.Elementary discharge aspects of the plasma jet and surface characteristics of the Ti surface are investigated by varying dissipated power(P_(d)).The results show that the plasma jet can operate in a pulsed mode or a continuous mode,depending on P_(d).The plume length increases with Pdand air flow rate increasing.By optical emission spectroscopy,plasma parameters as a function of Pdare investigated.After plasma treatment,water contact angel(WCA)of the Ti sample decreases to a minimum value of 15°with Pdincreasing.In addition,the surface topography,roughness,and content of chemical composition are investigated by scanning electron microscopy(SEM),atomic force microscopy(AFM),and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)with Pdincreasing.The results show that Ti-O bond and O-H group on the Ti surface are beneficial to the improvement of the hydrophilicity of Ti surface. 展开更多

SF_(6) has excellent insulation performance and arc extinguishing ability,and is widely used in the power industry.However,its global warming potential is about 23,500 times that of C0_(2),it can exist stably in the atmosphere,it is not easily degradable and is of great potential harm to the environment.Based on pulsed dielectric barrier discharge plasma technology,the effects of H_(2)O and 0_(2) on the degradation of SF_(6) were studied.Studies have shown that H_(2)O can effectively promote the decomposition of SF_(6) and improve its degradation rate and energy efficiency of degradation.Under the action of a pulse input voltage and input frequency of 15 kV and 15 kHz,respectively,when H_(2)O is added alone the effect of 1% H_(2)O is the best,and the rate and energy efficiency of degradation of SF_(6) reach their maximum values,which are 91.9% and 8.25 g kWh^(-1),respectively.The synergistic effect of H_(2)O and O_(2) on the degradation of SF_(6) was similar to that of H_(2)O.When the concentration of H_(2)O and O_(2) was 1%,the system obtained the best rate and energy efficiency of degradation,namely 89.7% and 8.05 g kWh~(-1),respectively.At the same time,different external gases exhibit different capabilities to regulate decomposition products.The addition of H_(2)O can effectively improve the selectivity of S0_(2).Under the synergistic effect of H_(2)O and O_(2),with increase in O_(2) concentration the degradation products gradually transformed into SO_(2)F_(2).From the perspective of harmless treatment of the degradation products of SF_(6),the addition of O_(2) during the SF_(6) degradation process should be avoided. 展开更多

In this study,different conditions of sandblasting on dental implant fixtures were investigated to achieve the best sandblasting conditions.18 different sandblasting conditions(Using 152 implant fixture samples)were examined,including parameters such as particle size,particle blasting pressure,and particle blasting angle.The surface treatment of the samples was performed using the SLA+Anodizing method.AFM testing was performed for each of the 18 different states,and the average surface roughness of each of these was compared with each other.Then,a bone layer was placed on the sample with the closest average surface roughness to the standard and the least amount of aluminum oxide on its surface among the 18 different states,to confirm the accuracy and quality of the desired surface roughness by examining the bone formation process and speed.The results showed that state No.4(sandblast particle size:75µm,spraying pressure of sandblast particles:4 bar,sandblast particle spraying angle:30 degrees),which was prepared using the SLA+Anodizing method and had a surface roughness of 1.989µm(The percentage of Al_(2)O_(3)on the surface=6%),had the best sandblasting conditions and showed 95%cell viability and accelerated the treatment and bone formation process for about a week.The simulation results,using Abaqus software,indicated that the stress distribution on the surface of the implant fixture in contact with the bone surface has increased by approximately 4.3%for state No.4.This will help prevent loosening of the dental implant fixture over time. 展开更多

The influence of micro-Ca/In alloying on the microstructural charac teristics,electrochemical behaviors and discharge properties of extruded dilute Mg-0.5Bi-0.5Sn-based(wt.%)alloys as anodes for Mg-air batteries are evaluated.The grain size and texture intensity of the Mg-Bi-Sn-based alloys are significantly decreased after the Ca/In alloying,particularly for the In-containing alloy.Note that,in addition to nanoscale Mg_(3)Bi_(2)phase,a new microscale Mg_(2)Bi_(2)Ca phase forms in the Ca-containing alloy.The electrochemical test results demonstrate that Ca/In micro-alloying can enhance the electrochemical activity.Using In to alloy the Mg-Bi-Sn-based alloy is effective in restricting the cathodic hydrogen evolution(CHE)kinetics,leading to a low self-corrosion rate,while severe CHE occurred after Ca alloying.The micro-alloying of Ca/In to Mg-Bi-Sn-based alloy strongly deteriorates the compactness of discharge products film and mitigates the"chunk effect"(CE),hence the cell voltage,anodic efficiency as well as discharge capacity are greatly improved.The In-containing alloy exhibits outstanding discharge performance under the combined effect of the modified microstructure and discharge products,thus making it a potential anode material for primary Mg-air battery. 展开更多

We experimentally and theoretically present a paradigm for the accurate bilayer design of gradient metasurfaces for wave beam manipulation,producing an extremely asymmetric splitting effect by simply tailoring the interlayer size.This concept arises from anomalous diffraction in phase gradient metasurfaces and the precise combination of the phase gradient in bilayer metasurfaces.Ensured by different diffraction routes in momentum space for incident beams from opposite directions,extremely asymmetric acoustic beam splitting can be generated in a robust way,as demonstrated in experiments through a designed bilayer system.Our work provides a novel approach and feasible platform for designing tunable devices to control wave propagation. 展开更多

The discharge characteristics and mechanism of sub-millimeter pulsed dielectric barrier discharge in atmosphericpressure helium are investigated experimentally and theoretically, demonstrating that when the discharge gap distance is reduced from 1.00 mm to 0.20 mm, the discharge ignition time is reduced to approximately 40 ns and discharge intensity is enhanced in terms of the discharge optical emission intensity and density of the plasma species,(energetic electrons with energy above 8.40 e V). The simulated results show that as the discharge gap distance is further reduced to 0.10 mm,the number of energetic electrons decreases, which is attributable to the contraction of plasma bulk regime and reduction of electron density in the discharge bulk. Conversely, the proportion of energetic electrons to the total electrons in the discharge monotonically increases as the discharge gap distance is reduced from 1.00 mm to 0.10 mm. It is proposed that a gap distance of 0.12 mm is optimal to achieve a high concentration and proportion of energetic electrons in sub-millimeter pulsed atmosphere dielectric barrier discharge. 展开更多

Surface metallization of glass fiber(GF)/polyetheretherketone(PEEK)[GF/PEEK] is conducted by coating copper using electroplating and magnetron sputtering and the properties are determined by X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), and electron backscatter diffraction(EBSD).The coating bonding strength is assessed by pull-out tests and scribing in accordance with GB/T 9286-1998.The results show that the Cu coating with a thickness of 30 μm deposited on GF/PEEK by magnetron sputtering has lower roughness, finer grain size, higher crystallinity, as well as better macroscopic compressive stress,bonding strength, and electrical conductivity than the Cu coating deposited by electroplating. 展开更多

A trigger system is typically employed in active seismic testing to trigger and synchronize multichannel surface wave data acquisition.The effect of the trigger system on the dispersion image of surface waves is empirically known to be negligible,however,theoretical explanation regarding the effect of the trigger system is insufficient.This study systematically examines the theory for surface wave dispersion analysis and proves that the effect of the trigger system on a dispersion image is negligible via a solid theoretical explanation.Subsequently,based on the new theoretical explanation,an alternative method that uses only the relative phase difference between sensors to extract dispersion characteristics with better conceptual clarity is proposed.Two active surface wave testing cases are considered to validate the theory and method.The results indicate that(1)an accurate trigger system is not necessary for surface wave data acquisition,and(2)it is unnecessary to assume that the impact point is the generation point of the surface waves for the experimental dispersion analysis. 展开更多
