According to the design specifications, the construction of extended piles involves traversing the tunnel’s upper region and extending to the underlying rock layer. To address this challenge,a subterranean transfer structure spanning multiple subway tunnels was proposed.Deliberating on the function of piles in the transfer structure as springs with axial and bending stiffness, and taking into account the force balance and deformation coordination conditions of beams and plates within the transfer structure,we established a simplified mechanical model that incorporates soil stratification by combining it with the Winkler elastic foundation beam model. The resolved established simplifiedmechanicalmodel employed finite difference technology and the Newton-Simpsonmethod,elucidating the mechanical mechanism of the transfer structure. The research findings suggest that the load carried by the upper structural columns can be transferred to the pile foundation beneath the beams through the transfer structure, subsequently reaching the deep soil layer and ensuring minimal impact on adjacent tunnels. The established simplified analysis method can be used for stress analysis of the transfer structure, concurrently considering soil stratification, pile foundation behavior, and plate action. The pile length, pile section size, and beam section size within the transfer structure should account for the characteristics of the upper load, ensuring an even distribution of the beam bending moment. 展开更多

Interlaid rock is an important component in the construction of neighborhood tunnels that supports and reinforces the area between two tunnels. However, the blasting load during excavation can sometimes damage the interlaid rock and threaten the stability of a tunnel’s structure. This paper presents a case study of the small clearance section of the Liantang highway tunnel project in Shenzhen,China, where the minimum distance between the two tunnels involved is only 0.5 m.To reduce the damage to the interlaid rock caused by blasting loads,we proposed a four-part excavation method with a vibrationcushioning rock layer in the following tunnel of neighborhood tunnels.Numerical simulation was used to model the damage prevention mechanism of the vibration-cushioning rock layer and to better understand the propagation of cracks in the interlaid rock.Furthermore, based on the simulation results, combined microseismic controlled-blasting technology was implemented, using innovative blasting patterns combined with different charge structures and blasting equipment designed according to the varying thickness of the interlaid rock. Finally, this implementation succeeded in protecting interlaid rock during blasting operations. 展开更多

The paper investigates the long-term seismic behaviour of an underground reinforced concrete(RC)metro tunnel in Santiago,Chile, considering the combined effects of chloride-induced corrosion and cumulative,low-amplitude seismic shaking on the structure’s performance. The soil-tunnel response is evaluated with the aid of transient, nonlinear finite element analysis using a two-dimensional(2D)plane strain numerical model that adopts advanced nonlinear models for the simulation of soil and concrete plasticity and the dynamic stiffness behaviour. The effects of corrosion deterioration are demonstrated in terms of time-dependent loss of rebar area and cover concrete stiffness and strength. The study illustrates the influence of ageing and repeated seismic shaking on lining deformation, crack development, and the modal characteristics of the intact and degrading systems. The results indicate that multiple lowamplitude events drive the non-degrading RC tunnel beyond its elastic regime without significant structural response consequences.A noticeable impact of corrosion deterioration on the structure’s seismic performance is revealed, increasing with the number and intensity of earthquake events. Two different tunnel embedment depths are comparatively assessed. The analyses demonstrate larger coseismic section convergence in the case of the deeper tunnel, yet a less pronounced effect of ageing and successive seismic loading compared to the shallow section, which is evident in the RC lining cracks at the end of shaking. 展开更多

Full-length grouted bolts play a crucial role in geotechnical engineering thanks to their excellent stability. However, few studies have been concerned with the degrading performance of grouted rock bolts caused by extensive and continuous heat conduction from surrounding rocks in high-geothermal tunnels buried more than 100 m(temperature from 28C to 100C).To investigate the damage mechanism,we examined the time-varying behaviors of grouted rock bolts in both constant and variable temperature curing environments and their damage due to the coupling effects of high temperature and humidity through mechanical and micro-feature tests, including uniaxial compression test,pull-out test, computed tomography(CT)scans,X-ray diffraction(XRD)test, thermogravimetric analysis(TGA),etc.,and further analyzed the relationship between grout properties and anchorage capability. In order to facilitate a rapid assessment and control of the anchorage performance of anchors in different conditions, results of the interface bond degradation tests were correlated to environment parameters based on the damage model of interfacial bond stress proposed.Accordingly,a thermal hazard classification criterion for anchorage design in high-geothermal tunnels was suggested.Based on the reported results, although high temperature accelerated the early-stage hydration reaction of grouting materials,it affected the distribution and quantity of hydration products by inhibiting hydration degree, thus causing mechanical damage to the anchorage system. There was a significant positive correlation between the strength of the grouting material and the anchoring force.Influenced by the changes in grout properties, three failure patterns of rock bolts typically existed.Applying a hot-wet curing regime results in less reduction in anchorage force compared to the hot-dry curing conditions. The findings of this study would contribute to the design and investigations of grouted rock bolts in high-geothermal tunnels. 展开更多

After some tragic fire events,Directive 2004/54/EC was issued to ensure a minimum safety level for tunnels belonging to the Trans-European Road Network longer than 500 m.Nowadays, most of the Italian road tunnels are still not in compliance with the minimum safety requirements, thus refurbishment works are often planned.By developing a traffic macro-simulation model, this paper aims at assessing the resilience of an existing twin-tube motorway tunnel when one of its tubes is partially or completely closed due to planned activities.Several scenarios were investigated, also considering the availability or not of an alternative itinerary in the surrounding transportation network. The average vehicles’speed was used as a functionality parameter, while the resilience metrics were the resilience loss, the recovery speed, and the resilience index. The findings showed higher resilience losses for complete closure rather than partial closure of the tube under planned refurbishment works. The implementation of digital technologies, such as variable message signs, might reduce the resilience loss of the tunnel system. This research might represent a reference for tunnel management agencies in the choice of the most appropriate traffic control strategy to improve tunnel resilience in the event of planned activities. 展开更多

The damage-fracture evolution of deep rock mass has obvious particularity, which is revealed in 2400-mdeep tunnels by field tests. The evolution of the excavation damaged zone depth is consistent with that of the fractured zone depth. The ratio of the excavation damaged zone depth to the excavation fractured zone depth is greater than 2.0 in a rock mass with both high strength and good integrity, but less than1.5 in a rock mass with lower strength or poor integrity.Zonal disintegration in a rock mass with high strength and fair integrity is more likely to occur when it contains more than two groups of primary fractures in damaged zones.Fractures develop outward in zonal disintegration but are totally different from the single-zone fracture,in which the fractures develop inward, and it is the starting position of the fractured zone when the excavation surface of the middle pilot is 7–9 m close to the pre-set borehole and it stops after the excavation surface of the baseplate is 11–14 m away. The most intense evolution occurs around 2–4 m from the pre-set borehole in the sidewall expansion stage. The research results provide a reference for the monitoring scheme and support design of CJPL-Ⅲin its future construction. 展开更多

With the development of global urbanization, the utilization of underground space is more critical and attractive for civil purposes.Various shapes of shield tunnels have been gradually proposed to cope with different geological conditions and service purposes of underground structures.Generally, reducing the burial depth of shield tunnel is conducive to construction and cost saving. However, extremely small overburden depth cannot provide sufficient uplift resistance to maintain the stability and serviceability of the tunnel. To this end, this paper firstly reviewed the status of deriving the minimum sand over-burden depth of circular shield tunnel using mechanical equilibrium(ME)method. It revealed that the estimated depth is rather conservative. Then, the uplift resistance mechanism of both circular and rectangular tunnels was deduced theoretically and verified with the model tests. The theoretical uplift resistance is consistent with the experimental values, indicating the feasibility of the proposed equations.Furthermore, the determination of the minimum soil overburden depth of rectangular shield tunnel under various working conditions was presented through integrated ME method, which can provide more reasonable estimations of suggested tunnel burial depth for practical construction.Additionally, optimizations were made for calculating the uplift resistance, and the soil thickness providing uplift resistance is suggested to be adjusted according to the testing results. The results can provide reference for the design and construction of various shapes of shield tunnels in urban underground space exploitation. 展开更多

Deep underground projects(e.g., coal mines), are often faced with complex conditions such as high stress and extremely soft rock. The strength and rigidity of the traditional support system are often insufficient, which makes it difficult to meet the requirements of ground control under complex conditions. As a new support form with high strength and rigidity, the confined concrete arch plays an important role in controlling the rock deformation under complex conditions. The section shape of the tunnel has an important impact on the mechanical properties and design of the support system. However, studies on the mechanical properties and influence mechanism of the new confined concrete arch are rarely reported. To this end, the mechanical properties of traditional U-shaped steel and new confined concrete arches are compared and comparative tests on arches of circular and straight-leg semicircular shapes in deep tunnels are conducted. A large mechanical testing system for underground engineering support structure is developed. The mechanical properties and influence mechanism of confined concrete arches with different section shapes under different loading modes and cross-section parameters are systematically studied. Test results show that the bearing capacity of the confined concrete arch is 2.10 times that of the U-shaped steel arch, and the bearing capacity of the circular confined concrete arch is 2.27 times that of the straight-leg semicircular arch. Among the various influencing factors and their engineering parameters, the lateral stress coefficient has the greatest impact on the bearing capacity of the confined concrete arch, followed by the steel pipe wall thickness, steel strength, and core concrete strength. Subsequently, the economic index of bearing capacity and cost is established, and the optimization design method for the confined concrete arch is proposed. Finally, this design method is applied to a high-stress tunnel under complex conditions, and the deformation of the surrounding rock is effectively controlled. 展开更多

The lag in quantitative methods and detection techniques for geologic information has resulted in time-consuming and human-experienced geologic analysis in tunnels.Geochemical indicators of rocks can be used to identify adverse geology and to explain the intrinsic causes of damage to normal rocks. This study proposes a method to identify adverse geology by extracting and imaging the indicator elements. The mapping relationship between rock components and geologic bodies is quickly determined by indicator element extraction based on factor analysis, and then the data are gridded for image output. The location and size of the target adverse geology are visually identified through the distribution images of the indicator elements, thus reducing data dimensions and analysis time.A non-destructive,in-situ and fast element detection technique in tunnels was adopted to speed up the process of geology identification. The accuracy of the detection was validated by comparing field and laboratory test results. This study further confirms and refines the previous research, and the results provide references for geological, mining and underground projects. 展开更多

Excavation and control of tunneling responses in swelling soft-rock tunnels of Sichuan-Tibet railway under seepage conditions were studied. For this,a fractional viscoplastic(FVP)model for swelling soft rocks was established by introducing Abel dashpot and unsteady viscosity coefficient, considering additional swelling deformation and damage of rock caused by humidity effect. In view of the FVP model, the viscoplastic deformation solutions for rock mass surrounding tunnel under seepage conditions were derived and long-term mechanical responses of swelling rocks upon tunnel excavation were analyzed.Next,a stress release coefficient considering seepage and creep was proposed, based on which control responses considering stress release and failure mechanism of stress release measures were analyzed. The results showed that:(i)The one-dimensional(1D)FVP model has a good application for swelling rock and the three-dimensional(3D)FVP model could well describe the whole creep process of rock mass despite a much higher creep attenuation rate in the first stage of creep;and(ii)An appropriate stress release and deformation of surrounding rocks could effectively reduce the supporting resistance. However, upon a large stress release, the radius of plastic region could increase significantly, and the strength of the surrounding rock mass decreases greatly. The proposed solution could provide a theoretical framework for capturing the excavation and support responses for tunneling in swelling rock mass in consideration of time effect. 展开更多

This study proposed an analytical model for the tunnel supported with a tangentially yielding liner in viscoelastic ground. The efficiency of the developed analytical model was verified by comparing the calculated results with associated numerical simulation results.Using the analytical model,a comprehensive parameter sensitivity analysis was performed to examine the effects of the rate of tunnel face advancement, concrete liner thickness, installation time of liner, and strength and thickness of yielding elements on the tunnel responses. The results highlight the significant benefit of the tangentially yielding liner to relieve overstress in the tunnel liner and improve the stability of the tunnel. The yield efficiency of the tangentially yielding liner depends highly on the yielding strength and deformable capacity of the yielding elements and less on the installation time. 展开更多

Submerged floating tunnel(SFTs)are typically subjected to complex external environmental and internal loads such as wave currents and traffic load.In this study, this problem is investigated through a finite element method able to account for fluid-structure interaction. The obtained results show that increasing the number of vehicles per unit length enhances the transverse vibrational displacements of the SFT cross sections.Under ultimate traffic load condition,one-way and two-way syntropic distributions can promote the dynamic responses of SFTs whereas two-way reverse distributions have the opposite effect. 展开更多

Cable fire is one of the most important events for operation and maintenance(O&M)safety in underground utility tunnels(UUTs).Since there are limited studies about cable fire risk assessment,a comprehensive assessment model is proposed to evaluate the cable fire risk in different UUT sections and improve O&M efficiency.Considering the uncertainties in the risk assessment,an evidential reasoning(ER)approach is used to combine quantitative sensor data and qualitative expert judgments.Meanwhile,a data transformation technique is contributed to transform continuous data into a five-grade distributed assessment. Then,a case study demonstrates how the model and the ER approach are established. The results show that in Shenzhen,China, the cable fire risk in District 8,B Road is the lowest, while more resources should be paid in District 3,C Road and District 25,C Road, which are selected as comparative roads.Based on the model,a data-driven O&M process is proposed to improve the O&M effectiveness, compared with traditional methods. This study contributes an effective ER-based cable fire evaluation model to improve the O&M efficiency of cable fire in UUTs. 展开更多

Large cross-section tunnel construction induces ground surface settlements, potentially endangering both subterranean projects and nearby above-ground structures. A novel tunnel construction method, known as the suspension method,is introduced in this paper to mitigate surface settlement. The suspension method employs vertical tie rods to establish a structural connection between the initial tunnel support system and the surface steel beam, thereby exerting effective control settlements. To analyze the performance of the proposed method, systematic numerical simulations were conducted based on the practical engineering of Harbin Subway Line 3. The surface settlement and vault settlement characteristics during construction are investigated. The results show a gradual increment in both surface and vault settlement throughout the construction process, culminating in a stabilized state upon the completion of construction. In addition, compared to the double-side drift method and the Cross Diaphragm Method(CRD) method, the suspension method can obviously reduce the surface settlement and vault settlement. Moreover, the surface settlements and the axial force of tie rods were continuously monitored during the construction process at the trial tunnel block. These specific monitoring measurements are illustrated in comparison to numerical analysis results. The monitored results show great agreement with the numerical predictions, confirming the success of the project. This research can serve as a valuable practical reference for similar projects, offering insights and guidance for addressing ground surface settlements and enhancing construction safety in the domain of large cross-section tunneling. 展开更多

Water inrush, which is one of the challenging issues and hot topics in the tunneling industry,is very easy to occur during the construction of karst tunnels. The mechanism of water inrush of karst tunnels is discussed and analyzed in the paper:the water inrush of karst tunnels is generally divided into three steps,i.e.,the forming of the hazard source, the forming of the water inrush passage and the failure of the anti-inrush rock mass. The failure of the anti-inrush rock mass of karst tunnels are classified into 5 types,i.e.,the integral tensile-shear failure, the hydraulic fracturing, the infiltration induced sliding of the filling medium, the loss of key blocks and the comprehensive water inrush mode. The failure mechanism is studied on basis of typical cases and by means of numerical simulation or theoretical analysis. Conclusion is drawn that most of the water inrushes in actual tunneling are comprehensive water inrushes, which are the comprehensive results of the interrelation and interaction of various water inrush types, and that different types of water inrushes have related continuity and progressive evolution relationships under certain conditions. 展开更多

Fire is a quite common phenomenon in tunnel and being able to model its consequences with a good precision is crucial to design adapted safety measures.Modelling the fire behaviour in tunnel is quite challenging.Managing large-scale experiment for all the possible configurations is however economically unrealistic. This paper presents an experimental real scale fire test that was used not only for demonstrating the fire behaviour but also for evaluating the capabilities of the FDS(fire dynamics simulator)fire code to model fire consequences too.It enables highlighting the importance of wall and inlet boundary condition treatment.Keeping in mind that predicting fire development using a CFD(computational fluid dynamics)code is quite impossible,a two-level approach is discussed with an analytical model to predict the fire curve and a CFD model for predicting smoke propagation, temperature and toxic gases distribution inside the tunnel. The comparisons show a good agreement between experimental fire test and CFD modelling but also let appear requirements when using CFD. 展开更多

Introduction Social development has led to the placement of high standards on ultra-long and ultra-deep mountain tunnels. Disasters may be encountered during the construction and maintenance of such mountain tunnels due to high geostress, high geotemperature, high hydraulic pressure, and special adverse strata, in addition to various other problems caused by engineering activities. To deal with uncertain geological conditions during mountain tunnel construction, comprehensive geological prediction, refined monitoring, and dynamic design and construction methods based on information technology should be adopted. For the operation and maintenance of ultra-long tunnels, the concepts of dynamic evacuation rescue, active protection, energy conservation, and environmental protection should be fully embodied in order to address significant problems related to ventilation, rescue situations, and energy consumption. Tunnelling related hazards are very common in the Himalayan terrain and a number of such instances have been reported. Several twin tunnels are being planned for transportation purposes which will require good understanding for prediction of tunnel deformation and surface settlement during the engineering life of the structure. The deformational behaviour, design of sequential excavation and support of any jointed rock mass are challenging during underground construction. We have raised several commonly assumed issues while performing stability analysis of underground opening at shallow depth. For this purpose, Kainchi-mod Nerchowck twin tunnels(Himachal Pradesh, India) are taken for in-depth analysis of the stability of two asymmetric tunnels to address the influence of topography, twin tunnel dimension and geometry. The host rock encountered during excavation is composed mainly of moderately to highly jointed grey sandstone, maroon sandstone and siltstones. In contrast to equidimensional tunnels where the maximum subsidence is observed vertically above the centreline of the tunnel, the result from the present study shows shifting of the maximum subsidence away from the tunnel centreline. The maximum subsidence of 0.99 mm is observed at 4.54 m left to the escape tunnel centreline whereas the maximum subsidence of 3.14 mm is observed at 8.89 m right to the main tunnel centreline. This shifting clearly indicates the influence of undulating topography and inequidimensional noncircular tunnel. 展开更多

This paper presents the application of a hybrid finite-discrete element method to study blast-induced damage in circular tunnels. An extensive database of field tests of underground explosions above tunnels is used for calibrating and validating the proposed numerical method; the numerical results are shown to be in good agreement with published data for large-scale physical experiments. The method is then used to investigate the influence of rock strength properties on tunnel durability to withstand blast loads. The presented analysis considers blast damage in tunnels excavated through relatively weak(sandstone) and strong(granite) rock materials. It was found that higher rock strength will increase the tunnel resistance to the load on one hand, but decrease attenuation on the other hand. Thus, under certain conditions, results for weak and strong rock masses are similar. 展开更多
