This is further exacerbated by the fact that most passenger rail services operate on corridors that are shared with freight traffic. A capacity analysis is one alternative to address the situation and there are various approaches, tools, and methodologies available for application. As the U.S. continues to develop higher speed passenger services with similar characteristics to those in European shared-use lines, understanding the common methods and tools used on both continents grows in relevance. There has not as yet been a detailed investigation as to how each continent approaches capacity analysis, and whether any benefits could be gained from cross-pollination. This paper utilizes more than 50 past capacity studies from the U.S. and Europe to describe the different railroad capacity defini- tions and approaches, and then categorizes them, based on each approach. The capacity methods are commonly di- vided into analytical and simulation methods, but this paper also introduces a third, "combined simulation- analytical" category. The paper concludes that Europeanrail studies are more unified in terms of capacity, concepts, and techniques, while the U.S. studies represent a greater variation in methods, tools, and objectives. The majority of studies on both continents use either simulation or a combined simulation-analytical approach. However, due to the significant differences between operating philosophy and network characteristics of these two rail systems, European studies tend to use timetable-based simulation tools as opposed to the non-timetable-based tools commonly used in the U.S. rail networks. It was also found that validation of studies against actual operations was not typically completed or was limited to comparisons with a base model.展开更多

Our findings are as follows: (1) The U.S.-China trade deficit has been widened by both downstream firms in China established through vertical FDI and also inward enterprises established through horizontal FDI. The widening deficit in turn exacerbates vitriolic complaints in the U.S. about injury to its industries. This will lead to further U.S. AD actions discouraging FDI in China. (2) U.S. AD cases against China have negatively impacted China's metal manufacturing, chemical and, especially, textile industries in terms of exports and inward FDI. From 2004 to 2009, the share of total inward FDI going to China's manufacturing sector has dropped drastically by almost 20 percent. This supports predictions made using the international division of labor model. (3) With U.S. AD actions against Chinese products on the rise, Chinese firms chose not to circumvent such barriers through outward FDI in the U.S. but rather through outward FDI in tax havens. Such a pattern of outward FDI is not helpful for China to establish its own successful industrial development model.展开更多

This paper carries out studies by sampling 97 products involved in U.S. AD cases against China and 395 kinds often- digit products uninvolved in cases. The findings are that: (1) Statistical analysis of case- involved samples indicates that the U.S. AD actions against China mostly focus on Chinese products possessing strong RCA in the U.S. market," inflicted by U.S. AD actions, 35 case-involved Chinese products still maintain strong RCA, whereas 27 ones lose the advantage in the U.S. market. (2) After extending the samples by introducing 395 kinds of products uninvolved in AD cases, two estimation methods verify that the impacts of all factors influencing the probability of U.S. AD actions against China become smaller, showing that the bias in selecting samples is avoided. Relatively, the U.S. trade deficit with China accrued through Chinese products is the most important determinant and the direct reason for the award of industry injury and the issuing of AD orders by the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). RCA is only one of the influencing factors but not the curse to Chinese products suffering from U.S. AD actions. Other influencing factors include slower industrial production growth and rising unemployment in the U.S. The U.S. subprime mortgage crisis is another important influencing factor.展开更多

According to the results,(1) corn production cost in China is the highest among these three countries;(2) the rapid growth of labor cost and land cost is the major factor that promotes the increase of total corn production cost in China;(3) the level of agricultural mechanization in China has been gradually improving, and the gap between agricultural mechanization levels in China and other two countries is constantly narrowing;(4) differing from the U.S. and Brazil,China exhibits a "high input, low output" agricultural production mode. Second, the labor force employed in China's manufacturing industry increased by 50%, of which the increase in capital and technology-intensive production sectors exceeded that in labor-intensive sectors. Meanwhile, the labor force employed in the U.S. manufacturing industry decreased. Third, labor productivity in China's manufacturing industry increased by 2.78 times, and profits increased by 2.21 times, much higher than the U.S. growth rates of 18.2% and 49.5%. Obviously, the narrowing gaps between China and the U.S.'s production capacities mean China's industrial progress and the hierarchy of world industrial powers will be rearranged.展开更多
