In groundwater hydrology, aquitard heterogeneity is often less considered compared to aquifers, despite its significant impact on groundwater hydraulics and groundwater resources evaluation.A semi-analytical solution is derived for pumping-induced well hydraulics and groundwater budget with consideration of vertical heterogeneity in aquitard hydraulic conductivity(K)and specific storage(S_(s)).The proposed new solution is innovative in its partitioning of the aquitard into multiple homogeneous sub-layers to enable consideration of various forms of vertically heterogeneous K or S_(s).Two scenarios of analytical investigations are explored:one is the presence of aquitard interlayers with distinct K or S_(s) values,a common field-scale occurrence;another is an exponentially depth-decaying aquitard S_(s),a regional-scale phenomenon supported by statistical analysis.Analytical investigations reveal that a low-K interlayer can significantly increase aquifer drawdown and enhance aquifer/aquitard depletion;a high-S_(s) interlayer can noticeably reduce aquifer drawdown and increase aquitard depletion.Locations of low-K or high-S_(s) interlayers also significantly impact well hydraulics and groundwater budget. In the context of an exponentially depth-decaying aquitard S_(s),a larger decay exponent can enhance aquifer drawdown. When using current models with a vertically homogeneous aquitard, half the sum of the geometric and harmonic means of exponentially depth-decaying aquitard S_(s) should be used to calculate aquitard depletion and unconfined aquifer leakage. 展开更多

High-resolution landslide images are required for detailed geomorphological analysis in complex topographic environment with steep and vertical landslide distribution. This study proposed a vertical route planning method for unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs),which could achieve rapid image collection based on strictly calculated route parameters. The effectiveness of this method was verified using a DJI Mavic 2 Pro,obtaining high-resolution landslide images within the Dongchuan debris flow gully,in the Xiaojiang River Basin,Dongchuan District,Yunnan,China.A three-dimensional(3D)model was constructed by the structure-from-motion and multi-view stereo(SfM-MVS).Micro-geomorphic features were analyzed through visual interpretation, geographic information system(GIS),spatial analysis, and mathematical statistics methods. The results demonstrated that the proposed method could obtain comprehensive vertical information on landslides while improving measurement accuracy. The 3D model was constructed using the vertically oriented flight route to achieve centimeter-level accuracy(horizontal accuracy better than 6 cm,elevation accuracy better than 3 cm,and relative accuracy better than 3.5 cm).The UAV technology could further help understand the micro internal spatial and structural characteristics of landslides, facilitating intuitive acquisition of surface details. The slope of landslide clusters ranged from 36°to 72°,with the majority of the slope facing east and southeast.Upper elevation levels were relatively consistent while middle to lower elevation levels gradually decreased from left to right with significant variations in lower elevation levels.During the rainy season, surface runoff was abundant, and steep topography exacerbated changes in surface features. This route method is suitable for unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)landslide surveys in complex mountainous environments. The geomorphological analysis methods used will provide references for identifying and describing topographic features. 展开更多

Vertical GaN power MOSFET is a novel technology that offers great potential for power switching applications.Being still in an early development phase, vertical GaN devices are yet to be fully optimized and require careful studies to foster their development. In this work,we report on the physical insights into device performance improvements obtained during the development of vertical GaN-on-Si trench MOSFETs(TMOS’s)provided by TCAD simulations, enhancing the dependability of the adopted process optimization approaches.Specifically, two different TMOS devices are compared in terms of transfer-curve hysteresis(H)and subthreshold slope(SS),showing a≈75%H reduction along with a≈30%SS decrease.Simulations allow attributing the achieved improvements to a decrease in the border and interface traps, respectively.A sensitivity analysis is also carried out, allowing to quantify the additional trap density reduction required to minimize both figures of merit. 展开更多

Vertical drains are used to accelerate consolidation of clays in ground improvement projects.Smear zones exist around these drains, where permeability is reduced due to soil disturbance caused by the installation process.Hansbo solution is widely used in practice to consider the effects of drain discharge capacity and smear on the consolidation process. In this study,a computationally efficient diameter reduction method(DRM)obtained from the Hansbo solution is proposed to consider the smear effect without the need to model the smear zone physically.Validated by analytical and numerical results,a diameter reduction factor is analytically derived to reduce the diameter of the drain, while achieving similar solutions of pore pressure dissipation profile as the classical full model of the smear zone and drain. With the DRM,the excess pore pressure u obtained from the reduced drain in the original un-disturbed soil zone is accurate enough for practical applications in numerical models.Such performance of DRM is independent of soil material property. Results also show equally accurate performance of DRM under conditions of multi-layered soils and coupled radial-vertical groundwater flow. 展开更多

Vertical mass isolation(VMI)is one of the novel methods for the seismic control of structures. In this method, the entire structure is assumed to consist of two mass and stiffness subsystems, and an isolated layer is located among them.In this study, the magnetorheological damper in three modes:passive-off,passive-on,and semi-active mode with variable voltage between zero and 9 volts was used as an isolated layer between two subsystems.Multi-degrees-of-freedom structures with 5,10,and 15 floors in two dimensions were examined under 11 pairs of near field earthquakes. On each level, the displacement of MR dampers was taken into account. The responses of maximum displacement, maximum inter-story drift, and maximum base shear in controlled and uncontrolled buildings were compared to assess the suggested approach for seismic control of the structures.According to the results, the semi-active control method can reduce the response by more than 12%compared to the uncontrolled mode in terms of maximum displacement of the mass subsystem of the structures. This method can reduce more than 16%and 20%of the responses compared to the uncontrolled mode in terms of maximum inter-story drift and base shear of the structure, respectively. 展开更多

Deepsea mining has been proposed since the 1960s to alleviate the lack of resources on land.Vertical hydraulic transport of collected ores from the seabed to the sea surface is considered the most promising method for industrial applications. In the present study,an indoor model test of the vertical hydraulic transport of particles was conducted.A noncontact optical method has been proposed to measure the local characteristics of the particles inside a vertical pipe, including the local concentration and particle velocity. The hydraulic gradient of ore transport was evaluated with various particle size distributions, particle densities, feeding concentrations and mixture flow velocities.During transport, the local concentration is larger than the feeding concentration, whereas the particle velocity is less than the mixture velocity. The qualitative effects of the local concentration and local fluid velocity on the particle velocity and slip velocity were investigated. The local fluid velocity contributes significantly to particle velocity and slip velocity, whereas the effect of the local concentration is marginal.A higher feeding concentration and mixture flow velocity result in an increased hydraulic gradient. The effect of the particle size gradation is slight, whereas the particle density plays a crucial role in the transport. 展开更多

A tracking stability control problem for the vertical electric stabilization system of moving tank based on adaptive robust servo control is addressed. This paper mainly focuses on two types of possibly fast timevarying but bounded uncertainty within the vertical electric stabilization system:model parameter uncertainty and uncertain nonlinearity.First, the vertical electric stabilization system is constructed as an uncertain nonlinear dynamic system that can reflect the practical mechanics transfer process of the system.Second, the dynamical equation in the form of state space is established by designing the angular tracking error.Third, the comprehensive parameter of system uncertainty is designed to estimate the most conservative effects of uncertainty. Finally,an adaptive robust servo control which can effectively handle the combined effects of complex nonlinearity and uncertainty is proposed. The feasibility of the proposed control strategy under the practical physical condition is validated through the tests on the experimental platform. This paper pioneers the introduction of the internal nonlinearity and uncertainty of the vertical electric stabilization system into the settlement of the tracking stability control problem, and validates the advanced servo control strategy through experiment for the first time. 展开更多

The problem considered in this short note is the limit load determination of a vertical rock slope. The classical limit theorem is employed with the use of adaptive finite elements and nonlinear programming to determine upper and lower bound limit loads of a Hoek-Brown vertical rock slope. The objective function of the mathematical programming problem is such as to optimize a boundary load, which is known as the limit load, resembling the ultimate bearing capacity of a strip footing. While focusing on the vertical slope, parametric studies are carried out for several dimensionless ratios such as the dimensionless footing distance ratio, the dimensionless height ratio, and the dimensionless rock strength ratio.A comprehensive set of design charts is presented, and failure envelopes shown with the results explained in terms of three identified failure mechanisms,i.e.the face, the toe,and the Prandtl-type failures. These novel results can be used with great confidence in design practice,in particularly noting that the current industry-based design procedures for the presented problem are rarely found. 展开更多

This research is concentrated on the longitudinal vibration of a tapered pipe pile considering the vertical support of the surrounding soil and construction disturbance.First, the pile-soil system is partitioned into finite segments in the vertical direction and the Voigt model is applied to simulate the vertical support of the surrounding soil acting on the pile segment. The surrounding soil is divided into finite ring-shaped zones in the radial direction to consider the construction disturbance. Then, the shear complex stiffness at the pile-soil interface is derived by solving the dynamic equilibrium equation for the soil from the outermost to innermost zone. The displacement impedance at the top of an arbitrary pile segment is obtained by solving the dynamic equilibrium equation for the pile and is combined with the vertical support of the surrounding soil to derive the displacement impedance at the bottom of the upper adjacent segment.Further, the displacement impedance at the pile head is obtained based on the impedance function transfer technique. Finally, the reliability of the proposed solution is verified, followed by a sensitivity analysis concerning the coupling effect of the pile parameters, construction disturbance and the vertical support of the surrounding soil on the displacement impedance of the pile. 展开更多

This paper evaluates the efficacy of two sequential vertical flow filters (VFF), FV1 and FV2, implanted with Typha, in a pilot-scale wastewater treatment system. FV1 comprises three cells (FV1a, FV1b, and FV1c), while FV2 consists of two cells (FV2a and FV2b), each designed to reduce various physicochemical and microbiological pollutants from wastewater. Quantitative analyses show significant reductions in electrical conductivity (from 1331 to 1061 μS/cm), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5 from 655.6 to 2.3 mg/L), chemical oxygen demand (COD from 1240 to 82.2 mg/L), total nitrogen (from 188 to 37.3 mg/L), and phosphates (from 70.9 to 14.6 mg/L). Notably, FV2 outperforms FV1, particularly in decreasing dissolved salts and BOD5 to remarkably low levels. Microbiological assessments reveal a substantial reduction in fecal coliforms, from an initial concentration of 7.5 log CFU/100mL to 3.7 log CFU/100mL, and a complete elimination of helminth eggs, achieving a 100% reduction rate in FV2. The study highlights the impact of design parameters, such as filter material, media depth, and plant species selection, on treatment outcomes. The findings suggest that the judicious choice of these components is critical for optimizing pollutant removal. For instance, different filtration materials show varying efficacies, with silex plus river gravel in FV1c achieving superior pollutant reduction rates. In conclusion, VFFs emerge as a promising solution for wastewater treatment, underscoring the importance of design optimization to enhance system efficiency. Continuous monitoring and adaptation of treatment practices are imperative to ensure water quality, allowing for safe environmental discharge or water reuse. The research advocates for ongoing improvements in wastewater treatment technologies, considering the environmental challenges of the current era. The study concludes with a call for further research to maximize the effectiveness of VFFs in water management. 展开更多

Saharan dust represents more than 50%of the total desert dust emitted around the globe and its radiative effect significantly affects the atmospheric circulation at a continental scale.Previous studies on dust vertical distribution and the Saharan Air Layer(SAL)showed some shortcomings that could be attributed to imperfect representation of the effects of deep convection and scavenging. The authors investigate here the role of deep convective transport and scavenging on the vertical distribution of mineral dust over Western Africa.Using multi-year(2006-2010)simulations performed with the variable-resolution(zoomed)version of the LMDZ climate model.Simulations are compared with aerosol amounts recorded by the Aerosol Robotic Network(AERONET)and with vertical profiles of the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization(CALIOP)measurements.LMDZ allows a thorough examination of the respective roles of deep convective transport, convective and stratiform scavenging, boundary layer transport, and advection processes on the vertical mineral dust distribution over Western Africa. The comparison of simulated dust Aerosol Optical Depth(AOD)and distribution with measurements suggest that scavenging in deep convection and subsequent re-evaporation of dusty rainfall in the lower troposphere are critical processes for explaining the vertical distribution of desert dust. These processes play a key role in maintaining a well-defined dust layer with a sharp transition at the top of the SAL and in establishing the seasonal cycle of dust distribution. This vertical distribution is further reshaped offshore in the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone(ITCZ)over the Atlantic Ocean by marine boundary layer turbulent and convective transport and wet deposition at the surface. 展开更多

Polycrystalline diamond compact(PDC)drill bit often performs with low ROP,short service life and poor stability under complicated and difficult to drill formations. Therefore,a vertical wheel PDC bit is proposed, which is a new drill bit technology applying an integrated unit combining the tooth wheel and the rotary shaft thereof.Besides, the experiments on motion and mechanical characteristics of the vertical wheel under the conditions of tooth shape and number of teeth, normal deflection angle of the wheel, and different cutting depth were carried out using variable parameter experimental device, and the movement, force law,and crushing specific work of vertical wheel under different experimental conditions were obtained. The comparative experiments of PDC cutting rock breaking under the conditions of parallel cutting of PDC unit and pre-damage of the wheel were also carried out,and the cutting load of PDC teeth under pre-damage conditions is between 38.72% and 70.95%lower than that of parallel cutting was obtained. Finally,a comparative experiment of indoor drilling between vertical wheel PDC bit and conventional PDC bit was carried out. Results show than when drilling in gravel rock, under the same WOB,the torque response of vertical wheel PDC bit is equivalent to that of the PDC bit, while the ROP of vertical wheel PDC bit is 22.94%-53.33% higher than that of conventional PDC bit,and the threedimensional acceleration of the vertical wheel PDC bit is 19.17%-76.23% of that of the PDC bit.The experimental results contribute to a better understanding of vertical wheels and provide technical support for their use in PDC bits. 展开更多

The dynamic responses of a floating vertical axis wind turbine(VAWT)are assessed on the basis of an aero-hydro-mooring coupled model. The aerodynamic loads on the rotor are acquired with double-multiple stream tube method.First-and second-order wave loads are calculated on the basis of 3D potential theory. The mooring loads are simulated by catenary theory. The coupled model is established, and a numerical code is programmed to investigate the dynamic response of the semi-submersible VAWT.A model test is then conducted, and the numerical code is validated considering the hydrodynamic performance of the floating buoy. The responses of the floating VAWT are studied through the numerical simulation under the sea states of wind and regular/irregular waves. The effects of the second-order wave force on the motions are also investigated. Results show that the slow-drift responses in surge and pitch motions are significantly excited by the second-order wave forces.Furthermore, the effect of foundation motion on aerodynamic loads is examined. The normal and tangential forces of the blades demonstrate a slight increase due to the coupling effect between the buoy motion and the aerodynamic loads. 展开更多

Research on vertical motion in mesoscale systems is an extraordinarily challenging effort.Allowing for fewer assumptions,a new form of generalized vertical motion equation and a generalized Omega equation are derived in the Cartesian coordinate system(nonhydrostatic equilibrium)and the isobaric coordinate system(hydrostatic equilibrium),respectively. The terms on the right-hand side of the equations, which comprise the Q vector, are composed of three factors:dynamic, thermodynamic, and mass.A heavy rain event that occurred from 18 to 19 July 2021 in southern Xinjiang was selected to analyze the characteristics of the diagnostic variable in the generalized vertical motion equation(Qz)and the diagnostic variable in the generalized Omega equation(Qp)using high-resolution model data. The results show that the horizontal distribution of the Qz-vector divergence at 5.5 km is roughly similar to the distribution of the Qp-vector divergence at 500 hPa,and that both relate well to the composite radar reflectivity, vertical motion, and hourly accumulated precipitation. The Qz-vector divergence is more effective in indicating weak precipitation. In vertical cross sections, regions with alternating positive and negative large values that match the precipitation are mainly concentrated in the middle levels for both forms of Q vectors. The temporal evolutions of vertically integrated Qz-vector divergence and Qp-vector divergence are generally similar. Both perform better than the classical quasigeostrophic Q vector and nongeostrophic Q vector in indicating the development of the precipitation system. 展开更多

In real life,a large amount of data describing the same learning task may be stored in different institutions(called participants),and these data cannot be shared among par-ticipants due to privacy protection. The case that different attributes/features of the same instance are stored in different institutions is called vertically distributed data. The pur-pose of vertical‐federated feature selection(FS)is to reduce the feature dimension of vertical distributed data jointly without sharing local original data so that the feature subset obtained has the same or better performance as the original feature set.To solve this problem,in the paper,an embedded vertical‐federated FS algorithm based on particle swarm optimisation(PSO‐EVFFS)is proposed by incorporating evolutionary FS into the SecureBoost framework for the first time.By optimising both hyper‐parameters of the XGBoost model and feature subsets,PSO‐EVFFS can obtain a feature subset, which makes the XGBoost model more accurate. At the same time, since different participants only share insensitive parameters such as model loss function,PSO‐EVFFS can effec-tively ensure the privacy of participants'data. Moreover,an ensemble ranking strategy of feature importance based on the XGBoost tree model is developed to effectively remove irrelevant features on each participant. Finally, the proposed algorithm is applied to 10 test datasets and compared with three typical vertical‐federated learning frameworks and two variants of the proposed algorithm with different initialisation strategies.Experi-mental results show that the proposed algorithm can significantly improve the classifi-cation performance of selected feature subsets while fully protecting the data privacy of all participants. 展开更多

Humans have long desired but never achieved the capacity to climb walls. The fundamental reason is that human hands and feet cannot climb vertical walls like geckos and bees.Animals lacking an adhesive structure can use the body’s dynamic effect to climb walls. Here we investigated the dynamic wall climbing behavior of individuals who cannot remain stationary on the vertical wall.Taking the domestic cat as the experimental object,we constructed an experimental platform as the obstacle for the cat to climb the wall. Our research indicated that domestic cats must meet the following physical conditions to do dynamic vertical wall climbing:vertical obstacles must have nonvertical surfaces,a horizontal run-up,and contact with nonvertical surfaces before the vertical speed reduces to zero. Here we proposed a dynamic vertical wall climbing model with three contact states based on an investigation of domestic cats’dynamic wall climbing behavior and the LIP model. The motion range of the LIP model’s generalized angular coordinates varies depending on the contact state. The horizontal run-up action can improve the jumping height and obtain horizontal speed. When making contact with the vertical surface of the obstacle, the motion inertia in the horizontal direction can produce a reaction force on the contact surface, which can compensate for the influence of some gravity. This alternating contact strategy lets cats switch different initial and end contact angles. This investigation clarifies the essential process underlying animals’dynamic vertical wall climbing and establishes the theoretical foundation for the legged robot to do dynamic vertical wall climbing. 展开更多

Additional stress formed by postconstruction buildings in loess-filling areas affects water infiltration in soil and causes soil deformation. To investigate this effect, under constant water head, vertical infiltration tests on compacted loess with two initial dry densities for different applied vertical stresses were developed using vertical stresscontrollable one-dimensional soil columns. The timehistory curves of vertical deformation, wetting front depth, cumulative infiltration depth, volumetric water content(VWC)and suction were measured, and the soil-water characteristic curves(SWCCs)were determined. The results showed that:(1)the infiltration ability of the soil column weakens with increasing applied vertical stress and initial dry density;(2)vertical deformation increases rapidly at first and then tends to be stable slowly at the consolidation and wetting-induced deformation stage, and is positively correlated with applied vertical stress and is negatively correlated with initial dry density. The stability time of wetting-induced deformation and the corresponding wetting front depth increase with the increase of applied vertical stress, while they decrease obviously when initial dry density increases;(3)the influence of applied vertical stress on soilwater characteristics in soil columns with various initial dry densities is related to the deformation depth of soil column. The VG(Van Genuchten)model is suitable for fitting the SWCCs at different monitoring positions.A normalized SWCC model introducing the applied vertical stress was proposed for each initial dry density using the mathematical relationship between the fitting parameters and the applied vertical stress. 展开更多

A method is proposed to fuse the velocity data of the global navigation satellite system(GNSS) and leveling height via combined adjustment with constraints. First, stable GNSS-leveling points are uniformly selected, and the constraints of the geodetic height change velocity and normal height change velocity are given. Then, the GNSS vertical velocities and leveling height difference are used as observations of combined adjustment, and robust least-squares estimation are used to estimate the velocities of the unknown points. Finally, a vertical movement model is established with the GNSS vertical velocities and leveling vertical velocities obtained via combined adjustment. Data from the second-order leveling network and GNSS control points in Shandong Province are taken as test data, and eight calculation schemes are used for discussion. One of the schemes, the bifactor robust combined adjustment method based on variance component estimation with two kinds of vertical velocity constraints achieves the optimal results. The method applied in the scheme can be recommended for data fusion of GNSS and leveling, further improving the reliability of vertical crustal movement in Shandong Province. 展开更多
