Because the research paper of Alzheimer's disease(AD)new drug(GV-971)was suspected to be fraudulent, the author filed a lawsuit for infringement of reputation.A court in Shanghai rejected the lawsuit.Legal documents openly support academic disputes and criticism. The FDA's approval of the listing of a new AD drug(aducanumab)is also full of controversy, and some scholars suspect that there are problems with clinical data(of course there are scholars who support the listing).Falsification of scientific research and papers is not uncommon in China. In 2021,more than 400 people were publicly investigated for falsification of papers(these papers published in SCI journals). The reason for the prevalence of falsification was related to the promotion policy, evaluation system and economic interests.Academic fraud was a serious waste of funds and corrupted the academic atmosphere. And hinder the development of science and technology. In the past two years, the government has successively promulgated a series of scientific research and academic integrity norms, prohibiting the use of scientific research funds in international predatory journals, advocating the purification of the academic environment, and conducive to genuine innovative research. The court respects science, administration does not interfere with academics, and advocates peer review. The first-instance judgment may be a landmark event for China. 展开更多

We conducted and analyzed several internet surveys in order to understand the profile of global research integrity and ethical awareness, encompassing global population distribution. These were(1)the global distribution of Committee of Publishing Ethics(COPE)membership;(2)the global distribution of“Integrity”or“Ethics”journals;(3)the level of academic integrity awareness in European higher education institutions and(4)awareness of academic integrity in the top universities of Asia and Africa. The results of this survey series highlight seriously imbalanced awareness of research integrity and publishing ethics across the world, especially in developing areas with the highest population density. We therefore propose a new index, the“Academic Integrity Awareness Index”for future discussions across the linked spheres of publishing and research. 展开更多

It has been recognized that international students studying in non-Anglophone countries face more challenges in integrating into local higher education institutions for a number of reasons, such as the local language barrier and cultural differences. This study aims to understand the challenges and coping strategies of academic integration in non-Anglophone countries from the students’perceptive, taking Chinese students as an example and using a qualitative approach based on semi-structured interviews with 58 Chinese students in Germany and Finland. It shows that, despite learning environment differences between Finland and Germany,Chinese students face similar challenges, including individual ones, such as the mismatch between their academic background and learning requirements,or contextual ones, such as a lack of consideration for international students in the pedagogical approach and curriculum design adopted by the host higher education institutions. The results challenge the existing stereotype of Chinese students and present evidence of students’resourcefulness in generating novel approaches to develop their learning capabilities. It also shows that traditional learning techniques may be used as pathways to achieving deep learning and understanding. 展开更多

Scientific integrity is a learned skill. When researchers and students learn integrity in laboratories or in the classroom, they are empowered to use similar principles in other aspects of their lives. This commentary reviews the concepts related to scientific integrity at a time when science faces important challenges related to the increase number of articles produced regarding research on coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)has ignited another parallel viral pandemic, with science ranging from robust studies to dishonest studies being conducted, posted, and shared at an unprecedented rate.A balance is needed between the benefits of the rapid access to new scientific data and the threat of causing panic or erroneous clinical decisions based on mistakes or misconduct. The truth is that the“scientific research has changed the world”but now,and more than ever,“it needs to change itself”.A pandemic with a“paperdemic”will be even more complicated to manage if it progresses in an uncontrolled manner and is not properly scrutinized. 展开更多
