The problem of chatter vibration is associated with adverse consequences that often lead to tool impairment and poor surface finished in a workpiece, and thus, controlling or suppressing chatter vibrations is of great significance to improve machining quality. In this paper, a workpiece and an actuator dynamics are considered in modeling and controller design. A proportional-integral controller(PI) is presented to control and actively damp the chatter vibration of a workpiece in the milling process. The controller is chosen on the basis of its highly stable output and a smaller amount of steady-state error. The controller is realized using analog operational amplifier circuit. The work has contributed to planning a novel approach that addresses the problem of chatter vibration in spite of technical hitches in modeling and controller design. The method can also lead to considerable reduction in vibrations and can be beneficial in industries in term of cost reduction and energy saving. The application of this method is verified using active damping device actuator(ADD) in the milling of steel. 展开更多

A model predictive control( MPC) based active damping controller for automotive driveline oscillations with time-delay consideration is proposed. A simplified driveline model considering time delay is modeled and converted to a linear parameter varying state space equation. Based on the model and model predictive control theory,an active damping controller is designed for drivability and comfortability improvement. In order to verify the designed controller,a driveline with engine is modeled to simulate the tip-in/out driving operation. An MPC active damping controller without considering time delay is simulated together with the proposed controller. The simulation results show that,by adopting the new MPC active damping controller, the vibration of the vehicle is reduced and the drivability and comfortability are improved. 展开更多

This paper firstly presents an equivalent coupling circuit modeling of multi-parallel inverters in microgrid operating in grid-connected mode. By using the model, the coupling resonance phenomena are explicitly investigated through the mathematical approach, and the intrinsic and extrinsic resonances exist widely in microgrid.Considering the inverter own reference current, other inverters reference current, and grid harmonic voltage, the distributions of resonance peaks with the growth in the number of inverters are obtained. Then, an active damping control parameter design method is proposed to attenuate coupling resonance, and the most salient feature is that the optimal range of the damping parameter can be easily located through an initiatively graphic method. Finally, simulations and experiments verify the validity of the proposed modeling and method. 展开更多

Under the connection to a weak grid, the Doubly Fed Induction Generator(DFIG)based wind power system has potential risk from two operational issues. The first issue is the High Frequency Resonance(HFR)mode due to the impedance interaction between the DFIG system and the weak grid.In order to ensure safe and reliable operation of the DFIG system,it is necessary to implement effective active damping strategies to mitigate the HFR.The second issue is low order voltage harmonic distortion at the Point of Common Coupling(PCC),where consequently the performance of other grid-connected devices may deteriorate. It could be advantageous that the DFIG system is able to improve the voltage quality at PCC by eliminating the low order harmonic components. In this paper, both of the above mentioned DFIG operational characters,i.e.,active damping of HFR and the improvement of voltage quality at PCC,will be achieved by implementing advanced control strategies in the Rotor Side Converter(RSC)and the Grid Side Converter(GSC)respectively.Simulations are provided to verify the proposed control strategies for DFIG system connected to a weak grid. 展开更多

This article makes the first attempt in assessing the influence of active constrained layer damping(ACLD)treatment towards precise control of frequency responses of functionally graded skew-magneto-electroelastic(FGSMEE)plates by employing finite element methods. The materials are functionally graded across the thickness of the plate in terms of modest power-law distributions. The principal equations of motion of FGSMEE are derived via Hamilton’s principle and solved using condensation technique. The effect of ACLD patches are modelled by following the complex modulus approach(CMA).Additionally, distinctive emphasis is laid to evaluate the influence of geometrical skewness on the attenuation capabilities of the plate. The accuracy of the current analysis is corroborated with comparison of previous researches of similar kind.Additionally,a complete parametric study is directed to understand the combined impacts of various factors like coupling fields, patch location, fiber orientation of piezoelectric patch in association with skew angle and power-law index. 展开更多

Active constrained layer damping (ACLD) combines the simplicity and reliability of passive damping with the light weight and high efficiency of active actuators to obtain high damping over a wide frequency band. A fluid-filled prismatic shell is set up to investigate the validity and efficiency of ACLD treatments in the case of fluid-structure interaction. By using state subspace identification method, modal parameters of the ACLD system are identified and a state space model is established subsequently for the design of active control laws. Experiments are conducted to the fluid-filled prismatic shell subjected to random and impulse excitation, respectively, For comparison, the shell model without fluid interaction is experimented as well. Experimental results have shown that the ACLD treatments can suppress vibration of the fluid-free and fluid-filled prismatic shell effectively. Under the same control gain, vibration attenuation is almost the same in both cases. 展开更多

Based on the transfer matrix method of exploring the circular cylindrical shell treated with active constrained layer damping(i.e., ACLD), combined with the analytical solution of the Helmholtz equation for a point source, a multi-point multipole virtual source simulation method is for the first time proposed for solving the acoustic radiation problem of a submerged ACLD shell. This approach, wherein some virtual point sources are assumed to be evenly distributed on the axial line of the cylindrical shell, and the sound pressure could be written in the form of the sum of the wave functions series with the undetermined coefficients, is demonstrated to be accurate to achieve the radiation acoustic pressure of the pulsating and oscillating spheres respectively. Meanwhile, this approach is proved to be accurate to obtain the radiation acoustic pressure for a stiffened cylindrical shell. Then, the chosen number of the virtual distributed point sources and truncated number of the wave functions series are discussed to achieve the approximate radiation acoustic pressure of an ACLD cylindrical shell. Applying this method, different radiation acoustic pressures of a submerged ACLD cylindrical shell with different boundary conditions, different thickness values of viscoelastic and piezoelectric layer, different feedback gains for the piezoelectric layer and coverage of ACLD are discussed in detail. Results show that a thicker thickness and larger velocity gain for the piezoelectric layer and larger coverage of the ACLD layer can obtain a better damping effect for the whole structure in general. Whereas, laying a thicker viscoelastic layer is not always a better treatment to achieve a better acoustic characteristic. 展开更多

On the basis of the piezoelectric theory, Mindlin plate theory, viscoelastic theory and ideal fluid equation, the finite element modeling of a fluid-filled cylindrical shell with active constrained layer damping (ACLD) was discussed. Energy methods and Lagrange’s equation were used to obtain dynamic equations of the cylindrical shell with ACLD treatments, which was modeled as well with the finite element method. The GHM (Golla-Hughes-McTavish) method was applied to model the frequency dependent damping of viscoelastic material. Ideal and incompressible fluid was considered to establish the dynamic equations of the fluid-filled cylindrical shell with ACLD treatments, Numerical results obtained from the finite element analysis were compared with those from an experiment. The comparison shows that the proposed modeling method is accurate and reliable. 展开更多

A new finite element modeling method has been developed using laminate theory in a virtual work principle for active constraining layer damping plate. The frequency dependent modulus of viscoelastic material is described by introducing a few dissipation coordinates, known as GHM (Golla-Hughes-McTavish) method, a standard linear system with constant coefficient. The effectiveness of this method is validated by experimental model. Compared with conventional methods, this method can reduce a number of degrees of freedom and improve accuracy, provides a good model for analogous configurations. 展开更多

Active vibration control is an effective way of increasing robustness of the design to meet the stringent accuracy requirements for space structures. This paper presents the results of active damping realized by a piezoelectric active member to control the vibration of a four-bay four-longern aluminum truss structure with cantilever boundary. The active member, which utilizes a piezoelectric actuating unit and an integrated load cell, is designed for vibration control of the space truss structures. Active damping control is realized using direct velocity feedback around the active member. The placement of the active member as one of the most important factor of affecting the control system performance, is also investigated by modal dissipation energy ratio as indicator. The active damping effectiveness is evaluated by comparing the closed-loop response with the open loop response. 展开更多

For the electrostatically suspended gyro (ESG) with solid rotor, because the equatorial photoelectric sensor won't sense the equatorial marking line and output the correct damping control information when the nutation angle is small, the active damping with equatorial marking line will bring considerable error. The passive damping method by applying strong DC magnetic field requires too much time. So an active damping method by longitude marking lines is proposed to fulfill the fine damping for solid ESG rotor. The shape of rotor marking lines and the principle of fine damping are introduced. The simulation results prove that this fine damping method can effectively solve the problem of damping error introduced by active damping with equatorial marking line. The estimating resuits for damping time indicate that the fine damping time is less than 10 percent of passive damping time. 展开更多

The grid-connected inverter with LCL filter has the ability of easily attenuating high-frequency current harmonics. However, its suppression effect on the background harmonics in grid voltage is limited. A control strategy is presented, which is composed of an inner loop of capacitor current feedforward, an outer loop of grid-current feedforward and feedforward of grid voltage. The limitations and steps of parameters design for LCL filter are analyzed. Meanwhile, the capacitor current loop is employed to damp the resonant peak caused by the LCL filter and enhance the stability. The properties of different controllers are analyzed and compared, thereinto quasi-proportional-rasonant (PR) controller realizes the control with zero steady-state error of AC variables in static coordinates. In order to suppress the current distortion effected by the background harmonics in grid voltage, the feed-forward function is calculated for the grid-connected inverter with an LCL filter. After simplifying the block diagram, a full-feedforward control strategy for grid voltage is proposed. Theoretical analysis and Matlab/Simulink simulation results show that the proposed method has the advantages of high steady accuracy, fast dynamic response and strong robustness. 展开更多

Two valve-controlled PI controllers, which include a proportional feedforward controller based on fuzzy set-point weighting following and a limited semi-integrator(LSI), are designed respectively. LSI is used to limit output signal and to prevent wind up at the low frequency of the spectrum. A new model for a smart shell of revolution treated with active constrained layer damping (ACLD) is developed, and the damping effects of the ACLD treatment are discussed. The motion and electric analytical formulation of the piezoelectric constrained layer are presented first. Based on the authors~ recent research on shells of revolution treated with passive constrained layer damping (PCLD), the integrated first-order differential matrix equation of a shell of revolution partially treated with ring ACLD blocks is derived in the frequency domain. By virtue of the extended homogeneous capacity precision integration technology, a stable and simple numerical method is further proposed to solve the above equation. Then, the vibration responses of an ACLD shell of revolution are measured by using the present model and method. The results show that the control performance of the ACLD treatment is complicated and frequency-dependent. In a certain frequency range, the ACLD treatment can achieve better damping characteristics compared with the conventional PCLD treatment. 展开更多

Active damped LCL-filter-based inverters have been widely used for grid-connected distributed generation(DG) systems. In weak grids, however, the phase-locked loop(PLL) dynamics may detrimentally affect the stability of grid-connected inverters due to interaction between the PLL and the controller. In order to solve the problem, the impact of PLL dynamics on small-signal stability is investigated for the active damped LCL-filtered grid-connected inverters with capacitor voltage feedback. The system closed-loop transfer function is established based on the Norton equivalent model by taking the PLL dynamics into account. Using an established model, the system stability boundary is identified from the viewpoint of PLL bandwidth and current regulator gain. The accuracy of the ranges of stability for the PLL bandwidth and current regulator gain is verified by both simulation and experimental results. 展开更多
