Magnesium(Mg),being the lightest structural metal, holds immense potential for widespread applications in various fields. The development of high-performance and cost-effective Mg alloys is crucial to further advancing their commercial utilization. With the rapid advancement of machine learning(ML)technology in recent years,the“data-driven''approach for alloy design has provided new perspectives and opportunities for enhancing the performance of Mg alloys. This paper introduces a novel regression-based Bayesian optimization active learning model(RBOALM)for the development of high-performance Mg-Mn-based wrought alloys.RBOALM employs active learning to automatically explore optimal alloy compositions and process parameters within predefined ranges, facilitating the discovery of superior alloy combinations. This model further integrates pre-established regression models as surrogate functions in Bayesian optimization, significantly enhancing the precision of the design process.Leveraging RBOALM,several new high-performance alloys have been successfully designed and prepared.Notably, after mechanical property testing of the designed alloys, the Mg-2.1Zn-2.0Mn-0.5Sn-0.1Ca alloy demonstrates exceptional mechanical properties, including an ultimate tensile strength of 406 MPa,a yield strength of 287 MPa,and a 23%fracture elongation.Furthermore, the Mg-2.7Mn-0.5Al-0.1Ca alloy exhibits an ultimate tensile strength of 211 MPa,coupled with a remarkable 41%fracture elongation. 展开更多

Ag-In intermetallic alloys were produced by using vacuum arc furnace. Differential Scanning Calorimetry(DSC) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectrometry(EDX) were used to determine the thermal properties and chemical composition of the phases respectively. Microhardness values of Ag-In intermetallics were calculated with Vickers hardness measurement method. According to the experimental results, Ag-34 wt%In intermetallic system generated the best results of energy saving and storage compared to other intermetallic systems. Also from the microhardness results, it was observed that intermetallic alloys were harder than pure silver and Ag-26 wt%In system had the highest microhardness value with 143.45 kg/mm^(2). 展开更多

Within the past ten years, spark plasma sintering(SPS)has become an increasingly popular process for Mg manufacturing. In the SPS process, interparticle diffusion of compressed particles is rapidly achieved due to the concept of Joule heating.Compared to traditional and additive manufacturing(AM)techniques,SPS gives unique control of the structural and microstructural features of Mg components.By doing so,their mechanical, tribological, and corrosion properties can be tailored.Although great advancements in this field have been made, these pieces of knowledge are scattered and have not been contextualized into a single work. The motivation of this work is to address this scientific gap and to provide a groundwork for understanding the basics of SPS manufacturing for Mg.To do so,the existing body of SPS Mg literature was first surveyed, with a focus on their structural formation and degradation mechanisms. It was found that successful Mg SPS fabrication highly depended on the processing temperature, particle size, and particle crystallinity. The addition of metal and ceramic composites also affected their microstructural features due to the Zener pinning effect. In degradative environments, their performance depends on their structural features and whether they have secondary phased composites. In industrial applications,SPS'd Mg was found to have great potential in biomedical, hydrogen storage, battery, automotive, and recycling sectors. The prospects to advance the field include using Mg as a doping agent for crystallite size refinement and using bulk metallic Mg-based glass powders for amorphous SPS components.Despite these findings, the interactions of multi-composites on the processing-structure-property relationships of SPS Mg is not well understood. In total, this work will provide a useful direction in the SPS field and serve as a milestone for future Mg-based SPS manufacturing. 展开更多

Biodegradable implants from magnesium(Mg)alloys have emerged in the biomedical field especially in the orthopedic and cardiovascular stent applications owing to their low density, high specific strength, excellent machinability, good biocompatibility, and biodegradability. The primary shortcoming of Mg-based implants is their low corrosion resistance in the physiological environment, which results in premature mechanical integrity loss before adequate healing and the production of excessive hydrogen gas, which is harmful to the body tissues and negatively affects the biocompatibility of the implant.Laser surface modification has recently received attention because it can improve the surface properties such as surface chemistry, roughness, topography, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, hydrophilicity, and thus cell response to the surface of the material. The composition and microstructures including textures and phases of laser-treated surfaces depend largely on the laser processing parameters(input laser power, laser scan velocity, frequency, pulse duration, pressure, gas circulation, working time, spot size, beam focal position, and laser track overlap)and the thermophysical properties of the substrate(solubility, melting point, and boiling point). This review investigates the impacts of various laser surface modification techniques including laser surface melting, laser surface alloying, laser cladding, laser surface texturing, and laser shock peening, and highlights their significance in improving the surface properties of biodegradable Mg alloys for implant applications.Additionally,we explore how different laser process parameters affect its composition, microstructure, and surface properties in each laser surface modification technique. 展开更多

The electrochemical methanol oxidation is a crucial reaction in the conversion of renewable energy. To enable the widespread adoption of direct methanol fuel cells(DMFCs),it is essential to create and engineer catalysts that are both highly effective and robust for conducting the methanol oxidation reaction(MOR).In this work, trimetallic PtCoRu electrocatalysts on nitrogen-doped carbon and multi-wall carbon nanotubes(PtCoRu@NC/MWCNTs)were prepared through a two-pot synthetic strategy. The acceleration of CO oxidation to CO_(2) and the blocking of CO reduction on adjacent Pt active sites were attributed to the crucial role played by cobalt atoms in the as-prepared electrocatalysts. The precise control of Co atoms loading was achieved through precursor stoichiometry.Various physicochemical techniques were employed to analyze the morphology, element composition, and electronic state of the catalyst.Electrochemical investigations and theoretical calculations confirmed that the Pt_(1)Co_(3)Ru_(1)@NC/MWCNTs exhibit excellent electrocatalytic performance and durability for the process of MOR.The enhanced MOR activity can be attributed to the synergistic effect between the multiple elements resulting from precisely controlled Co loading content on surface of the electrocatalyst, which facilitates efficient charge transfer. This interaction between the multiple components also modifies the electronic structures of active sites, thereby promoting the conversion of intermediates and accelerating the MOR process. Thus, achieving precise control over Co loading in PtCoRu@NC/MWCNTs would enable the development of high-performance catalysts for DMFCs. 展开更多

Mg-6Zn-2X(Fe/Cu/Ni)alloys were prepared through semi-continuous casting, with the aim of identifying a degradable magnesium(Mg)alloy suitable for use in fracturing balls.A comparative analysis was conducted to assess the impacts of adding Cu and Ni,which result in finer grains and the formation of galvanic corrosion sites.Scanner electronic microscopy examination revealed that precipitated phases concentrated at grain boundaries, forming a semi-continuous network structure that facilitated corrosion penetration in Mg-6Zn-2Cu and Mg-6Zn-2Ni alloys.Pitting corrosion was observed in Mg-6Zn-2Fe,while galvanic corrosion was identified as the primary mechanism in Mg-6Zn-2Cu and Mg-6Zn-2Ni alloys.Among the tests, the Mg-6Zn-2Ni alloy exhibited the highest corrosion rate(approximately 932.9 mm/a)due to its significant potential difference.Mechanical testing showed that Mg-6Zn-2Ni alloy possessed suitable ultimate compressive strength, making it a potential candidate material for degradable fracturing balls, effectively addressing the challenges of balancing strength and degradation rate in fracturing applications. 展开更多

In this study,a phase-field scheme that rigorously obeys conservation laws and irreversible thermodynamics is developed for modeling stress-corrosion coupled damage(SCCD).The coupling constitutive relationships of the deformation,phase-field damage, mass transfer, and electrostatic field are derived from the entropy inequality. The SCCD localization induced by secondary phases in Mg is numerically simulated using the implicit iterative algorithm of the self-defined finite elements. The quantitative evaluation of the SCCD of a C-ring is in good agreement with the experimental results. To capture the damage localization,a micro-galvanic corrosion domain is defined, and the buffering effect on charge migration is explored.Three cases are investigated to reveal the effect of localization on corrosion acceleration and provide guidance for the design for resistance to SCCD at the crystal scale. 展开更多

Magnesium(Mg)-based bone implants degrade rapidly in the physiological environment of the human body which affects their structural integrity and biocompatibility before adequate bone repair.Rare earth elements(REEs)have demonstrated their effectiveness in tailoring the corrosion and mechanical behavior of Mg alloys. This study methodically investigated the impacts of scandium(Sc)and terbium(Tb)in tailoring the corrosion resistance, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility of Mg–0.5Zn–0.35Zr–0.15Mn(MZZM)alloys fabricated via casting and hot extrusion. Results indicate that addition of Sc and Tb improved the strength of MZZM alloys via grain size reduction and solid solution strengthening mechanisms. The extruded MZZM–(1–2)Sc–(1–2)Tb(wt.%)alloys exhibit compressive strengths within the range of 336–405 MPa,surpassing the minimum required strength of 200 MPa for bone implants by a significant margin.Potentiodynamic polarization tests revealed low corrosion rates of as–cast MZZM(0.25 mm/y),MZZM–2Tb(0.45 mm/y),MZZM–1Sc–1Tb(0.18 mm/y),and MZZM–1Sc–2Tb(0.64 mm/y),and extruded MZZM(0.17 mm/y),MZZM–1Sc(0.15 mm/y),MZZM-2Sc(0.45 mm/y),MZZM-1Tb(0.17 mm/y),MZZM-2Tb(0.10 mm/y),MZZM–1Sc-1Tb(0.14 mm/y),MZZM-1Sc-2Tb(0.40 mm/y),and MZZM–2Sc–2Tb(0.51 mm/y)alloys,which were found lower compared to corrosion rate of high-purity Mg(~1.0 mm/y)reported in the literature.Furthermore, addition of Sc,or Tb,or Sc and Tb to MZZM alloys did not adversely affect the viability of SaOS2 cells, but enhanced their initial cell attachment, proliferation, and spreading shown via polygonal shapes and filipodia. This study emphasizes the benefits of incorporating Sc and Tb elements in MZZM alloys,as they effectively enhance corrosion resistance, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility simultaneously. 展开更多

The high entropy alloys(HEAs)are the newly developed high-performance materials that have gained significant importance in defence, nuclear and aerospace sector due to their superior mechanical properties, heat resistance, high temperature strength and corrosion resistance. These alloys are manufactured by the equal mixing or larger proportions of five or more alloying elements.HEAs exhibit superior mechanical performance compared to traditional engineering alloys because of the extensive alloying composition and higher entropy of mixing.Solid state welding(SSW)techniques such as friction stir welding(FSW),rotary friction welding(RFW),diffusion bonding(DB)and explosive welding(EW)have been efficiently deployed for improving the microstructural integrity and mechanical properties of welded HEA joints. The HEA interlayers revealed greater potential in supressing the formation of deleterious intermetallic phases and maximizing the mechanical properties of HEAs joints. The similar and dissimilar joining of HEAs has been manifested to be viable for HEA systems which further expands their industrial applications. Thus, the main objective of this review paper is to present a critical review of current state of research, challenges and opportunities and main directions in SSW of HEAs mainly CoCrFeNiMn and Al_xCoCrFeNi alloys. The state of the art of problems, progress and future outlook in SSW of HEAs are critically reviewed by considering the formation of phases, microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of HEAs joints. 展开更多

The influence of micro-Ca/In alloying on the microstructural charac teristics, electrochemical behaviors and discharge properties of extruded dilute Mg-0.5Bi-0.5Sn-based(wt.%)alloys as anodes for Mg-air batteries are evaluated. The grain size and texture intensity of the Mg-Bi-Sn-based alloys are significantly decreased after the Ca/In alloying, particularly for the In-containing alloy.Note that,in addition to nanoscale Mg_(3)Bi_(2)phase,a new microscale Mg_(2)Bi_(2)Ca phase forms in the Ca-containing alloy. The electrochemical test results demonstrate that Ca/In micro-alloying can enhance the electrochemical activity.Using In to alloy the Mg-Bi-Sn-based alloy is effective in restricting the cathodic hydrogen evolution(CHE)kinetics, leading to a low self-corrosion rate, while severe CHE occurred after Ca alloying. The micro-alloying of Ca/In to Mg-Bi-Sn-based alloy strongly deteriorates the compactness of discharge products film and mitigates the"chunk effect"(CE),hence the cell voltage, anodic efficiency as well as discharge capacity are greatly improved. The In-containing alloy exhibits outstanding discharge performance under the combined effect of the modified microstructure and discharge products, thus making it a potential anode material for primary Mg-air battery. 展开更多

The stability of the microstructure and mechanical properties of the pre-hardened sheets during the pre-hardening forming(PHF)process directly determines the quality of the formed components. The microstructure stability of the pre-hardened sheets was in-vestigated by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),and small angle X-ray scattering(SAXS),while the mechanical properties and formability were analyzed through uniaxial tensile tests and formability tests. The results in-dicate that the mechanical properties of the pre-hardened alloys exhibited negligible changes after experiencing 1-month natural aging(NA).The deviations of ultimate tensile strength(UTS),yield strength(YS),and sheet formability(Erichsen value)are all less than 2%.Also,after different NA time(from 48 h to 1 month)is applied to alloys before pre-hardening treatment, the pre-hardened alloys possess stable microstructure and mechanical properties as well.Interestingly, with the extension of NA time before pre-hardening treatment from 48 h to 1 month, the contribution of NA to the pre-hardening treatment is limited.Only a yield strength increment of 20 MPa is achieved, with no loss in elongation. The limited enhancement is mainly attributed to the fact that only a limited number of clusters are transformed into Guinier-Preston(GP)zones at the early stage of pre-hardening treatment, and the formation ofθ''phase inhibits the nucleation and growth of GP zones as the precipitated phase evolves. 展开更多

This study investigates the effect of characteristics and distribution of Mg_(17)Al_(12)precipitates on the uniaxial tensile and three-point bending properties of extruded Mg alloys containing high Al contents. The extruded Mg–9Al–1Zn–0.3Mn(AZ91)alloy contains lamellar-structured Mg_(17)Al_(12)discontinuous precipitates along the grain boundaries, which are formed via static precipitation during natural air cooling. The extruded Mg–11Al–1Zn–0.3Mn(AZ111)alloy contains spherical Mg_(17)Al_(12)precipitates at the grain boundaries and inside the grains, which are formed via dynamic precipitation during extrusion.Due to inhomogeneous distribution of precipitates, the AZ111 alloy consists of two different precipitate regions:precipitate-rich region with numerous precipitates and finer grains and precipitate-scarce region with a few precipitates and coarser grains. The AZ111 alloy exhibits a higher tensile strength than the AZ91 alloy because its smaller grain size and more abundant precipitates result in stronger grain-boundary hardening and precipitation hardening effects, respectively. However, the tensile elongation of the AZ111 alloy is lower than that of the AZ91 alloy because the weak cohesion between the dynamic precipitates and the matrix facilitates the crack initiation and propagation.During bending,a macrocrack initiates on the outer surface of bending specimen in both alloys. The AZ111 alloy exhibits higher bending yield strength and lower failure bending strain than the AZ91 alloy. The bending specimens of the AZ91 alloy have similar bending formability, whereas those of the AZ111 alloy exhibit considerable differences in bending formability and crack propagation behavior, depending on the distribution and number density of precipitates in the specimen. In bending specimens of the AZ111 alloy,it is found that the failure bending strain(ε_(f,bending))is inversely proportional to the area fraction of precipitates in the outer zone of bending specimen(A_(ppt)),with a relationship ofε_(f,bending)=–0.1A_(ppt)+5.86. 展开更多

Constructing a functional hybrid coating appears to be a promising strategy for addressing the poor corrosion resistance and insufficient endothelialization of Mg-based stents.Nevertheless, the steps for preparing composite coatings are usually complicated and time-consuming.Herein,a novel composite coating, composed of bioactive magnesium thioctic acid(MTA)layer formed by deposition and corrosion-resistant magnesium hydroxide(Mg(OH)_(2))layer grown in situ,is simply fabricated on ZE21B alloys via one-step electrodeposition.Scanning electron microscopy(SEM)shows that the electrodeposited coating has a compact and uniform structure. And the high adhesion of the MTA/Mg(OH)_(2)hybrid coating is also confirmed by the micro-scratch test.Electrochemical test, scanning kelvin probe(SKP),and hydrogen evolution measurement indicate that the hybrid coating effectively reduces the degradation rate of Mg substrates.Haemocompatibility experiment and cell culture trial detect that the composite coating is of fine biocompatibility. Finally, the preparation mechanism of MTA/Mg(OH)_(2)hybrid coatings is discussed and proposed. This coating shows a great potential application for cardiovascular stents. 展开更多

The ocean is one of the essential fields of national defense in the future, and more and more attention is paid to the lightweight research of Marine equipment and materials. This study it is to develop a Machine learning(ML)-based prediction method to study the evolution of the mechanical properties of Al-Li alloys in the marine environment. We obtained the mechanical properties of Al-Li alloy samples under uniaxial tensile deformation at different exposure times through Marine exposure experiments. We obtained the strain evolution by digital image correlation(DIC).The strain field images are voxelized using 2D-Convolutional Neural Networks(CNN)autoencoders as input data for Long Short-Term Memory(LSTM)neural networks. Then, the output data of LSTM neural networks combined with corrosion features were input into the Back Propagation(BP)neural network to predict the mechanical properties of Al-Li alloys. The main conclusions are as follows:1.The variation law of mechanical properties of2297-T8 in the Marine atmosphere is revealed. With the increase in outdoor exposure test time, the tensile elastic model of 2297-T8 changes slowly, within 10%,and the tensile yield stress changes significantly, with a maximum attenuation of 23.6%.2.The prediction model can predict the strain evolution and mechanical response simultaneously with an error of less than 5%.3.This study shows that a CNN/LSTM system based on machine learning can be built to capture the corrosion characteristics of Marine exposure experiments. The results show that the relationship between corrosion characteristics and mechanical response can be predicted without considering the microstructure evolution of metal materials. 展开更多

Mg-Al alloys have excellent strength and ductility but relatively low thermal conductivity due to Al addition. The accurate prediction of thermal conductivity is a prerequisite for designing Mg-Al alloys with high thermal conductivity. Thus, databases for predicting temperature-and composition-dependent thermal conductivities must be established. In this study,Mg-Al-La alloys with different contents of Al2La,Al3La,and Al11La3phases and solid solubility of Al in the α-Mg phase were designed. The influence of the second phase(s) and Al solid solubility on thermal conductivity was investigated.Experimental results revealed a second phase transformation from Al_(2)La to Al_(3)La and further to Al_(11)La_(3)with the increasing Al content at a constant La amount. The degree of the negative effect of the second phase(s) on thermal diffusivity followed the sequence of Al2La>Al3La>Al_(11)La_(3).Compared with the second phase,an increase in the solid solubility of Al in α-Mg remarkably reduced the thermal conductivity. On the basis of the experimental data,a database of the reciprocal thermal diffusivity of the Mg-Al-La system was established by calculation of the phase diagram (CALPHAD)method. With a standard error of±1.2 W/(m·K),the predicted results were in good agreement with the experimental data. The established database can be used to design Mg-Al alloys with high thermal conductivity and provide valuable guidance for expanding their application prospects. 展开更多

Through exploring the stress corrosion cracking(SCC)behaviors of the as-cast Mg-8%Li and Mg-8%Li-6%Zn-1.2%Y alloys in a 0.1 M NaCl solution,it revealed that the SCC susceptibility index(I_(SCC))of the Mg-8%Li alloy was 47%,whilst the I_(SCC)of the Mg-8%Li-6%Zn-1.2%Y alloy was 68%.Surface,cross-sectional and fractography observations indicated that for the Mg-8%Li alloy,theα-Mg/β-Li interfaces acted as the preferential crack initiation sites and propagation paths during the SCC process. With regard to the Mg-8%Li-6%Zn-1.2%Y alloy, the crack initiation sites included the I-phase and the interfaces of I-phase/β-Li andα-Mg/β-Li,and the preferential propagation paths were the I-phase/β-Li andα-Mg/β-Li interfaces. Moreover, the SCC of the two alloys was concerned with hydrogen embrittlement(HE)mechanism. 展开更多

This study focuses on finding a solution to the sharp decline in mechanical properties of Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloys due to rapid coarsening of traditional intermediate phases at high temperature.A new type of modified al oy,to be used in automobile engines at high temperatures, was prepared by adding Zr and Mo into Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy. The synergistic effects of Zr and Mo on the microstructure evolution and high-temperature mechanical properties were studied. Results show that the addition of Zr and Mo generates a series of intermetallic phases dispersed in the alloy. They can improve the strength of the alloy by hindering dislocation movement and crack propagation. In addition, some nano-strengthened phases show coherent interfaces with the matrix and improve grain refinement. The addition of Mo greatly improves the heat resistance of the alloy. The extremely low diffusivity of Mo enables it to improve the thermal stability of the intermetallic phases, inhibit precipitation during aging, reduce the size of the precipitates, and improve the heat resistance of the alloy. 展开更多
