With the high-quality development of modern agriculture and animal husbandry in the plateau,the waste resources produced by agriculture and animal husbandry show a trend of diversification.How to effectively carry out the key work based on the optimal combination and utilization of waste resources of agriculture and animal husbandry in Tibet is imminent.To realize efficient recycling of waste resources of agriculture and animal husbandry,innovative mode is explored.On the theoretical basis,it can effectively alleviate the resource crisis,control the pollution sources,effectively utilize the resources and construct the recycling mode,which plays an important role in promoting,integrating and coordinating the high-quality development of modern agriculture and animal husbandry in the plateau.In this paper,optimal combination and utilization manner of waste resources of agriculture and animal husbandry under the circular development concept is comprehensively analyzed and summarized,to continuously improve reasonable and effective utilization level and efficiency of agricultural waste resources.It could not only inhibit waste pollution but also promote rational and effective utilization of resources,thereby laying theoretical basis for sustainable and efficient development of agriculture and animal husbandry in Tibet,promoting the improvement of agricultural and rural ecological environment,and providing the thinking for exploring model of ecological recycling in plateau. 展开更多

Industrial animal agriculture is grounded in the concept of maximizing productivity and profit.Selective breeding for maximum productivity in one characteristic of the animal(e.g.milk yield in cows,or breast meat in broiler chickens)has resulted in genotypes and phenotypes that may predispose the animals to poor health and welfare.The conditions in which these individuals are kept may also frustrate many inherited behaviors that they are strongly motivated to perform.In order to curb the resulting harmful aberrant behaviors,such as feather-pecking in chickens,we sometimes resort to mutilating the animals.In many places chickens are routinely de-beaked by means of a hot metal guillotine.Compassion in World Farming(an international organization that promotes the humane treatment of farm animals)believes that it is unethical to treat sentient beings in such ways.We have a duty to respect farm animals’sentience by providing them with housing conditions that take their needs and wants into account,and by reverting to the use of dual-purpose,slower-growing breeds that have the potential for good welfare.Alternatives to current farming practices are available,and we owe it to the animals,and to our consciences,to pursue them. 展开更多

Intensive livestock and poultry farming in China largely relied on the use of in-feed antibiotics until July 2020.The consequences of antibiotic overuse in animal feed include accumulation in animal products and the development of bacterial antibiotic resistance,both of which threaten food safety and human health.China has now completely banned the circulation of commercial feed containing growth-promoting drug additives(except Chinese herbal medicine).Therefore,alternatives to in-feed antibiotics in animal production are greatly needed.Natural phenolic compounds(NPCs)exist widely in plants and are non-toxic,nonpolluting,highly reproducible,and leave little residue.Many natural flavonoids,phenolic acids,lignans,and stilbenes have polyphenol chemical structures and exhibit great potential as alternatives to antibiotics.In this review we delineate the characteristics of plant-derived NPCs and summarize their current applications as alternatives to in-feed antibiotics,aiming to provide new strategies for antibiotic-free feeding and promote the development of more sustainable animal husbandry practices. 展开更多

Animal husbandry is a major source of greenhouse gas(GHG)emissions in agriculture.Mitigating the emissions from the livestock sector is vital for green development of agriculture in China.Based on National Communication on Climate Change of United Nations,this study aims to investigate the characteristics of GHG emissions of animal husbandry during 1994 to 2014,introduce major emission reduction technologies and their effectiveness,and investigate options for emission reduction for the livestock sector in China.It proposes that control of pollution and carbon emissions can be realized through increased animal productivity,improved feed quality and recycling of animal manure.This paper thus concludes with suggestions of green and lowcarbon development of animal husbandry,including the research and development of new technology for emission reduction and carbon sequestration of the livestock sector,enhancement of monitoring and evaluation,and establishment of emission reduction and carbon sequestration standards. 展开更多

Integrating biochar into cattle diets has recently emerged as a potential management practice for improving on-farm productivity.Yet,information concerning the cycling of biochar-manure mixtures is scarce.A 70-d incubation experiment was conducted within two surface(0–15 cm)Mollisols with contrasting textures,i.e.,sandy clay loam(Raymond)and clayey(Lethbridge),to evaluate the effects of biochar(3 Mg ha^(-1))on cumulative greenhouse gas(GHG)emissions and related fertility attributes in the presence or absence of cattle manure(120 Mg ha^(-1)).Five treatments were included:i)non-amended soil(control,CK),ii)soil amended with pinewood biochar(B),iii)soil amended with beef cattle manure(M)(manure from cattle on a control diet),iv)soil amended with biochar-manure(BM)(manure from cattle on a control diet,with pinewood biochar added at 20 g kg^(-1)of diet dry matter),and v)soil amended with B and M at the aforementioned rates(B+M).A total of 40 soil columns were prepared and incubated at 21℃and 60%–80%water-holding capacity.On average,total CO_(2)fluxes increased by 2.2-and 3.8-fold under manure treatments(i.e.,M,BM,and B+M),within Raymond and Lethbridge soils,respectively,relative to CK and B.Similarly,total CH4 fluxes were the highest(P<0.05)in Raymond soil under B+M and BM relative to CK and B,and in Lethbridge soil under M and BM relative to CK and B.In Lethbridge soil,application of BM increased cumulative N_(2)O emissions by 1.8-fold relative to CK.After 70-d incubation,amendment with BM increased(P<0.05)PO_4-P and NO_3-N+NH_4-N availability in Raymond and Lethbridge soils compared with B.A similar pattern was observed for water-extractable organic carbon in both soils,with BM augmenting(P<0.05)the occurrence of labile carbon over CK and B.It can be concluded that biochar,manure,and/or biochar-manure have contrasting short-term effects on the biogeochemistry of Mollisols.At relatively low application rates,biochar does not necessarily counterbalance manure-derived inputs.Although BM did not mitigate the flux of GHGs over M,biochar-manure has the potential to recycle soil nutrients in semiarid drylands. 展开更多

Livestock is a subsector of Pakistan agriculture which contributes approximately 56%of value addition in agriculture and nearly 11%to the gross domestic product(GDP).Livestock production makes a major contribution to agriculture value added services.In order to highlight the actual performance of livestock production and livestock and poultry products,the study explored the relationship between agricultural GDP and livestock product output,including milk,beef,mutton,poultry meat,eggs,wool,hair,skins,hides and bones,in Pakistan over the 35 year period from 1980 to 2015.Time series data were collected from the National Food Security and Research,the Economic Survey of Pakistan and the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics(various publications).Livestock data were analysed using the ordinary least squares(OLS)method and the Augmented Dickey-Fuller(ADF)test,and the results were interpreted using the Johansen co-integration test.Our study found that the output of milk,fat,eggs,bones and mutton has a positive,significant relationship to the agricultural GDP of Pakistan,while the output of beef,poultry meat,wool,hair,skins and hides has a negative,insignificant relationship to the agricultural GDP of Pakistan.Therefore,the study suggests that the government of Pakistan initiates new funding schemes for the development of the livestock sector. 展开更多
