Convection-dispersion of fluids flowing through porous media is an important phenomenon in immiscible and miscible displacement in hydrocarbon reservoirs. Exact calculation of this problem leads to perform more robust reservoir simulation and reliable prediction. There are various techniques that have been proposed to solve convection-dispersion equation. To check the validity of these techniques, the convection-dispersion equation was solved numerically using a series of well known numerical techniques. Such techniques that employed in this study include method of line, explicit, implicit, Crank-Nicolson and Barakat-Clark. Several cases were considered as input, and convection-dispersion equation was solved using the aforementioned techniques. Moreover the error analysis was also carried out based on the comparison of numerical and analytical results. Finally it was observed that method of line and explicit methods are not capable of simulating the convection-dispersion equation for wide range of input parameters. The Barakat-Clark method was also failed to predict accurate results and in some cases it had large deviation from analytical solution. On the other hand, the simulation results of implicit and Crank-Nicolson have more qualitative and quantitative agreement with those obtained by the analytical solutions. 展开更多

A difference scheme in curvilinear coordinates is put forward for calculation of salinity in estuaries and coastal waters, which is based on Eulerian-Lagrangian method. It combines first-order and second-order Lagrangian interpolation to reduce numerical dispersion and oscillation. And the length of the curvilinear grid is also considered in the interpolation. Then the scheme is used in estuary, coast and ocean model, and several numerical experiments for the Yangtze Estuary and the Hangzhou Bay are conducted to test it. These experiments show that it is suitable for simulations of salinity in estuaries and coastal waters with the models using curvilinear coordinates. 展开更多

By applying bromide ion as tracer, the channeling flow has been quantitatively described in saline rice soil and alkaline soil of Da'an City, Jilin Province of China. Breakthrough curves of bromide ion in the saline rice soils after 1-year cultivation and 5-year cultivation and alkaline soil have been attained. Results show that the rice cultivation practice can improve the alkaline soil structure, however, it can accelerate the development of channeling flow pathway. Therefore, the channeling flow pathway has been developed widely in saline rice soil, but rarely in the alkaline soil. Three models of convection-dispersion equation (CDE), transfer functional model (TFM) and Back-Progation Network (BP Network) were used to simulate the transportation process of bromide ion. The peaks of probability density function of saline rice soil are higher with left skewed feature compared with that of the alkaline soil. It shows that the TIM and CDE can simulate the transportation process of the bromide ion in saline rice soil after 5-year cultivation, however, some deviation exists when it was used to simulate transportation process of bromide ion in saline rice soil after 1-year cultivation and alkaline soil; BP network can effectively simulate transportation process of bromide ion in both saline rice soil and alkaline soil. 展开更多

Human health has been potentially threatened by cadmium (Cd) contained in sewage irrigation water.Previous studies of Cd transport in soils were mainly conducted using small soil cores with pH values less than 6.The objectives of this study were to determine the parameters of the convection-dispersion equation (CDE) for Cd transport in relatively larger columns with neutral and alkaline soils, and to investigate the parameters' variability with depth. The soil columns were 50 cm in length and 12.5 cm in diameter.Ceramic suction lysimeters were buried at depths of 2.5,7.5,17.5,27.5,and 37.5 cm to abstract soil solution.Cd concentration in the soil solution samples were subsequently analyzed to obtain breakthrough curves (BTCs).Equilibrium and nonequilibrium models in CXTFIT program were used to estimate parameters of the CDE.The results suggested that both equilibrium and non-equilibrium models performed well in modeling Cd transport. The hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient (D) ranged from 0.18 to 10.70 cm 2 h 1,showing large differences among different depths. The retardation factor (R d) ranged from 25.4 to 54.7 and the standard deviation of R d value was lower than 30% of the mean value.Precipitation coefficient (R p) decreased consistently with increasing depth, varying from 1.000 × 10 10 to 0.661 h 1.Sensitivity tests showed that D was less sensitive than R d.These results would be helpful in understanding the transport and retention of Cd in non-acidic soils. 展开更多
