BACKGROUND:Alcoholic liver disease(ALD)is one of the main causes of liver disease worldwide.Although the pathogenesis of ALD has not yet been well elucidated,the oxidative metabolites of ethanol such as acetaldehyde and reactive oxygen species play a pivotal role in the clinical and pathological spectrum of the disease.This review summarizes the existing evidences on dietary supplements considered to have antioxidant,and/or anti-inflammatory properties,and their role in the management of ALD and the proposed mechanisms.DATA SOURCES:The present study reviewed all studies published in Pub Med,Science Direct and Scopus,from 1959 to2015,indicating the role of different dietary supplementation in attenuation of many pathophysiological processes involved in development and progression of ALD.Full-texts of citations were used except for those that were published in languages other than English.RESULTS:Significant progress has been made to understand the key events and molecular players for the onset and progression of ALD from both experimental and clinical studies;however,there is no successful treatment currently available.The present review discussed the role of a variety of dietary supplements(e.g.vitamin A,carotenoids,vitamins B3,C and E,in addition to antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents)in treating ALD.It has been shown that supplementation with some carotenoids,vitamin B3,vitamin C,silymarin,curcumin,probiotics,zinc,S-adenosylmethionine and garlic may havepotential beneficial effects in animal models of ALD;however,the number of clinical studies is very limited.In addition,supplementation should be accompanied with alcohol cessation.CONCLUSIONS:Since oxidative stress and inflammation are involved in the pathogenesis of ALD,dietary supplements that can modulate these pathologies could be useful in the treatment of ALD.In addition to alcohol cessation,these supplements have shown beneficial effects on animal models of ALD.Clinical trials are needed to validate the beneficiary role of these supplements in patients with ALD. 展开更多

Objective To study the effects of a local diet popular in Yanling region (YT diet) on the proliferation of two human cell lines (Eca-109 esophageal squamous cell carcinoma line and HL7702 normal liver epithelial cell line) in rats by a sero-physiological approach. Methods Male SD rats were divided into six groups and fed respectively with a conventional diet and the YT diet (one of the five experimental diets) supplemented with two vitamin mixtures (Mix.1: vitamins A, E, and folic acid; Mix.2:mix.1 plus riboflavin and vitamin C) at two different doses. On the 30th day, sera were collected from the rats and added into a medium for cell culture, with 10% FBS used as a serum control. The effects were assessed by MTT assay, DNA synthesis and flow cytometry assays. Results Compared with the control, the sera from rats fed with the YT diet significantly promoted the proliferation of Eca-109 cells, which was, however, reversed by the supplementation with two vitamin mixtures at high doses. Surprisingly, the same treatment produced contrary effects on HL7702 cells as compared with Eca-109 cells. Conclusion The sera from rats fed with the YT diet could promote the proliferation of human esophageal cancer cell line Eca-109, whereas the sera from those fed with the YT diet supplemented with vitamin mixtures might have inhibitory effects on the proliferation of Eca-109 ceils. 展开更多

Background: Supplementing farm animals diet with functional ingredients may improve the nutritional quality of meat products.Diet composition has been also demonstrated to influence the gene expression with effect on biological processes and pathways.However,the knowledge on the effect of nutrients at the molecular level is scant.In particular,studies on the effects of antioxidants and polyphenols dietary supplementation have been investigated mainly in rodents,and only scarcely in farm animals so far.RNA-Seq with next-generation sequencing is increasingly the method of choice for studying changes in the transcriptome and it has been recently employed also in pig nutrigenomics studies to identify diet-induced changes in gene expression.The present study aimed to investigate the effect of diets enriched with functional ingredients(linseed,vitamin E and plant extracts) on the transcriptome of pig Longissimus thoracis to elucidate the role of these compounds in influencing genes involved in muscle physiology and metabolism compared to a standard diet.Results: Eight hundred ninety-three significant differentially expressed genes(DEGs)(FDR adjusted P-value ≤ 0.05)were detected by RNA-Seq analysis in the three diet comparisons(D2-D1,D3-D1,D4-D1).The functional analysis of DEGs showed that the diet enriched with n-3 PUFA from linseed(D2) mostly downregulated genes in pathways and biological processes(BPs) related to muscle development,contraction,and glycogen metabolism compared to the standard diet.The diet supplemented with linseed and vitamin E/Selenium(D3) showed to mostly downregulate genes linked to oxidative phosphorylation.Only few genes involved in extracellular matrix(ECM)organization were upregulated by the D3.Finally,the comparison D4-D1 showed that the diet supplemented with linseed and plant extracts(D4) upregulated the majority of genes compared to D1 that were involved in a complex network of pathways and BPs all connected by hub genes.In particular,IGF2 was a hub gene connecting protein metabolism,ECM organization,immune system and lipid biosynthesis pathways.Conclusion: The supplementation of pig diet with n-3 PUFA from linseed,antioxidants and plant-derived polyphenols can influence the expression of a relevant number of genes in Longissimus thoracis muscle that are involved in a variety of biochemical pathways linked to muscle function and metabolism. 展开更多

In the Chinese national nutrition surveys, fortified foods were not investigated separately from the base diet, and the contribution of fortified foods to micronutrients intake is not very clear. This study investigated the diet, including fortified foods and food supplements, of urban pregnant women and analyzed the intake of calcium, iron,and zinc to assess the corresponding contributions of fortified foods, food supplements, and the base diet. The results demonstrated that the base diet was the major source of calcium, iron, and zinc, and was recommended to be the first choice for micronutrients intake. Furthermore, consumption of fortified foods and food supplements offered effective approaches to improve the dietary intake of calcium, iron, and zinc in Chinese urban pregnant women. 展开更多

试验旨在研究基于玉米-豆粕型饲粮不同蛋白质水平和氨基酸补充模式对1~28日龄仔鹅生长性能、胫长、胫围、腿肌和肝脏氨基酸含量的影响。选取1日龄江南白鹅公雏364只,随机分为4组,每组7个重复,每个重复13只鹅。采用2×2因素完全随机... 试验旨在研究基于玉米-豆粕型饲粮不同蛋白质水平和氨基酸补充模式对1~28日龄仔鹅生长性能、胫长、胫围、腿肌和肝脏氨基酸含量的影响。选取1日龄江南白鹅公雏364只,随机分为4组,每组7个重复,每个重复13只鹅。采用2×2因素完全随机试验设计,设置两个蛋白水平(18.55%和15.55%)和两种氨基酸补充模式(补充主要氨基酸和补充全部氨基酸)。4组分别为PM(CP 18.55%+主要氨基酸,11.20 MJ/kg)、PA(CP 18.55%+全部氨基酸,11.20 MJ/kg)、LPM(CP 15.55%+主要氨基酸,11.20 MJ/kg)、LPA(CP 15.55%+全部氨基酸,11.20 MJ/kg)。主要氨基酸包含6种,全部氨基酸包含12种。试验期为28 d。结果表明:与CP 18.55%相比,CP 15.55%显著降低了仔鹅7、14、21 d的平均体重(P<0.05)。与补充全部氨基酸模式相比,补充主要氨基酸模式显著增加了14 d仔鹅的胫围以及28 d鹅肝脏丙氨酸(Ala)、蛋氨酸(Met)、酪氨酸(Tyr)、组氨酸(His)、脯氨酸(Pro)含量(P<0.05)。与CP 18.55%相比,CP 15.55%显著降低了28 d鹅肝脏Met含量、27~29 d鹅粪中苏氨酸(Thr)含量(P<0.05)。研究表明,不同蛋白水平和氨基酸补充模式对28 d仔鹅的生长性能无不良影响,仔鹅对低蛋白饲粮的适应性强,降低蛋白水平不会对仔鹅生产性能产生负面影响。 展开更多

为了了解黄石地区老年人营养现状,为下一步开展老年营养工作提供有效数据支撑。运用横断面方法,从基本信息、养老模式选择、营养补充剂认知、态度、行为及需求等方面进行问卷调查,采用均数±标准差进行描述。计数资料采用频数和百... 为了了解黄石地区老年人营养现状,为下一步开展老年营养工作提供有效数据支撑。运用横断面方法,从基本信息、养老模式选择、营养补充剂认知、态度、行为及需求等方面进行问卷调查,采用均数±标准差进行描述。计数资料采用频数和百分比进行统计描述,即n(%),运用χ^(2)检验进行组间比较,使用Spearman相关探究养老模式与营养补充剂使用的关联。假设检验均为双侧检验,检验水准α=0.05,所有统计分析均通过SPSS 26.0进行。发现不同养老模式下营养补充剂使用存在差异,64%的参与者正在使用营养补充剂,其中机构养老的人群中使用比例高于居家养老人群,差异具有统计学意义;营养补充剂认知与接受度与养老模式关联,83.4%的参与者认为老年人需要营养补充剂,58.3%的参与者不愿意在营养补充剂方面投入资金,57.7%的参与者愿意接受付费营养健康干预指导。老年人群对营养补充剂的需求和资金投入不匹配,养老机构人群优于居家养老人群,相关部门应当更加关注居家养老人群的营养需求及支持,并积极采取措施,加强养老专业人才队伍建设,针对性开展健康宣传教育,保障老年人晚年养老生活质量。 展开更多

Methods Two hundred and forty male Chinese field artillery personnel who undertook large scale and endurance... Objective To investigate the effects of vitamin-mineral supplement on young males with physica overtraining. Methods Two hundred and forty male Chinese field artillery personnel who undertook large scale and endurance military training and were on ordinary Chinese diet were randomized to receive a multivitamin/multimineral supplement or a placebo for 1 week. After a 1-week wash-out period, a cross-over with 1 week course of a placebo or multivitamin/multimineral supplement was conducted. Blood and urine samples were analyzed for adrenal, gonadal and thyroid hormones. In addition, cellular immune parameters (CD3+, CD3+CD4+, CD3+CD8+, CD4/CD8, CD3-CD56+, CD3-CD19+) were examined and psychological tests were performed before and after the training program and nutrition intervention. Results After a large scale and endurance military training, the participants showed significantly increased thyroid function, decreased adrenal cortex, testosterone and immunological function, and significantly increased somatization, anger and tension. Compared to placebo, multivitamin/ multimineral intervention showed significant effects on functional recovery of the pituitary - adrenal axis, pituitary-gonadal axis, pituitary- thyroid axis and immune system as well as psychological parameters. Conclusion High-intensity military operations have significant impacts on the psychology, physical ability and neuroendocrine-immune system in young males. Appropriate supplementation of multivitamin/multimineral can facilitate the recovery of the psychology, physical ability and neuroendocrine-immune system in young males who take ordinary Chinese diet. 展开更多

Moringa oleifera-based diet protects against nickel-induced hepatotoxicity in rats

Multiple health-promoting effects have been attributed to the consumption of Moringa oleifera leaves,as part of diet without adequate scientific credence.This study evaluated the effect of M.oleifera-based diets on nickel(Ni)-induced hepatotoxicity in rats.Male rats assigned into six groups were given oral administration of 20 mg/kg body weight nickel sulfate in normal saline and either fed normal diet or M.oleifera-based diets for 21 days.All animals were sacrificed under anesthesia 24 hours after the last treatment.Ni exposure elevated the rat plasma activities of alanine transaminase,aspartate transaminase and alkaline phosphatase significantly.Ni exposure also raised the levels of triglyceride,total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol while depleting the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration.Further,Ni exposure raised rat plasma malondialdehyde but depleted reduced glutathione concentrations.The histopathological presentations revealed inflammation and cellular degeneration caused by Ni exposure.We show evidence that M.oleifera-based diets protected against Ni-induced hepatotoxicity by improving the rat liver function indices,lipid profile as well as restoring cellular architecture and integrity.Study lends credence to the health-promoting value of M.oleifera as well as underscores its potential to attenuate hepatic injury. 展开更多

We have previously shown that induction of ketosis by ketogenic diet(KD)conveyed neuroprotection following spinal cord injury in rodent models,however,clinical translation may be limited by the slow raise of ketone levels when applying KD in the acute post-injury period.Thus we investigated the use of exogenous ketone supplementation(ketone sodium,KS)combined with ketogenic diet as a means rapidly inducing a metabolic state of ketosis following spinal cord injury in adult rats.In uninjured rats,ketone levels increased more rapidly than those in rats with KD alone and peaked at higher levels than we previously demonstrated for the KD in models of spinal cord injury.However,ketone levels in KD+KS treated rats with SCI did not exceed the previously observed levels in rats treated with KD alone.We still demonstrated neuroprotective effects of KD+KS treatment that extend our previous neuroprotective observations with KD only.The results showed increased neuronal and axonal sparing in the dorsal corticospinal tract.Also,better performance of forelimb motor abilities were observed on the Montoya staircase(for testing food pellets reaching)at 4 and 6 weeks post-injury and rearing in a cylinder(for testing forelimb usage)at 6 and 8 weeks post-injury.Taken together,the findings of this study add to the growing body of work demonstrating the potential benefits of inducing ketosis following neurotrauma.Ketone salt combined with a ketogenic diet gavage in rats with acute spinal cord injury can rapidly increase ketone body levels in the blood and promote motor function recovery.This study was approved by the Animal Care Committee of the University of British Columbia(protocol No.A14-350)on August 31,2015. 展开更多

Validated procedures play an important role to obtain accurate information about individual amino acid requirement data. The aim of the present study was to assess lysine (Lys) requirement of growing chicken both by classical supplementation technique and principles of diet dilution technique as applied with “Goettingen approach”. During the starter period (1 - 21 d), a growth study with male meat type chicken (Ross 308) was conducted making use of five graded dietary Lys-levels (3 repetition boxes with 3 birds/box). L-Lys×HCl was gradually added to a diet based on wheat, soybean protein concentrate, wheat gluten and fishmeal to yield 80%, 87.5%, 95%, 102.5% and 110% of the expected requirement level (13 g Lys/kg as fed). Diets were iso-energetic (12.8 MJME/kg) and iso-nitrogenous (21.65% crude protein). Birds were fed on free choice level also to assess the feed intake (FI) effects as important factor on traditional response criteria. Analyzed body composition at start and end of the growth study yielded N deposition (ND) data for further data assessment using exponential approximations depending on dietary Lys content or observed Lys intake. The results indicated significant differences (p < 0.05) in response on body weight gain (BWG) and observed dietary protein quality with unexpected consequences for the derived Lys requirement data. According to the independent variable (Lys in % of diet versus daily Lys intake) and aimed level of daily ND, the needed in-feed content of Lys varied between 1.24% and 1.46%. Application of the exponential modelling by “Goettingen approach” overcame these misleading conclusions by modelling the relationship between required Lys intake and observed response data (BWG, ND) taking also into account the expected real feed intake to formulate the needed in-feed concentration. 展开更多
