Effect of Photovoltaic Power Generation on Carbon Dioxide Emission Reduction under Double Carbon Background

Increasing the efficiency and proportion of photovoltaic power generation installations is one of the best ways to reduce both CO_(2) emissions and reliance on fossil-fuel-based power supplies.Solar energy is a clean and renewable power source with excellent potential for further development and utilization.In 2021,the global solar installed capacity was about 749.7 GW.Establishing correlations between solar power generation,standard coal equivalent,carbon sinks,and green sinks is crucial.However,there have been few reports about correlations between the efficiency of tracking solar photovoltaic panels and the above parameters.This paper calculates the increased power generation achievable through the use of tracking photovoltaic panels compared with traditional fixed panels and establishes relationships between power generation,standard coal equivalent,and carbon sinks,providing a basis for attempts to reduce reliance on carbon-based fuels.The calculations show that power generation efficiency can be improved by about 26.12%by enabling solar panels to track the sun's rays during the day and from season to season.Through the use of this improved technology,global CO_(2) emissions can be reduced by 183.63 Mt,and the standard coal equivalent can be reduced by 73.67 Mt yearly.Carbon capture is worth approximately EUR 15.48 billion,and carbon accounting analysis plays a vital role in carbon trading. 展开更多

There are numerous studies comparing different kinds of environmental taxes and standards.However,forms of environmental standards focused by former researchers are usually quantitybased limits/standards(e.g.pounds per day or pounds per unit of output).Concentration-based emission standard(e.g.milligrams per liter of wastewater) as one important form of environmental standard has not been given much attention.In this article,comparable estimates of their probable effect on enterprise pollution reduction will be developed for concentrationbased effluent standards,effluent taxes,and a combination of both.A linear simulation model is used to clearly and obviously compare the effects of effluent taxes and concentration-based standards within the same figure.With one detailed application to the paper industry,some enlightenment and conclusions-as well as the general applicability of these principles-are then provided:Under the same effluent tax rate,enterprises,groups,and industries that are cleaner will reduce more pollutants than those that have higher pollutant abatement costs.It is recommended that effluent taxes are set by avoiding cutting it even at one stroke and considering the feasibility of pollution-reducing technology in various industries.It is necessary to reduce MAC of enterprises to better stimulate enterprises' or industries' emission reduction by preferential measures,such as high tax rate coordinated by speeding up the depreciation of environmental protection equipment. 展开更多

The carbon rich nature of FF combustion can impact global warming. Therefore, it is conducive to transition from FF to renewable energy (RE). The present study aimed to address if replacement of a single FF by RE can mitigate carbon emissions. We conduct the study in a country undergoing mass urbanization and challenging energy demands. <span>Data from energy resources in the Power & Energy Sector Master Plan (PSMP2016;Bangladesh) are analyzed over the 2017-2021 trajectory. Two scenarios for imports, oil and coal are assessed. Environmental input output (E</span><span><span>-</span></span><span><span style="font-family:;" "=""><span>IO) analysis and percentage equivalence analysis measured data variables. The data is then further disaggregated into an emission reduction (ER) model with sensitivity analysis</span><span> to measure carbon emission reduction when each FF source is substituted by RE. </span></span></span><span>Results show the percentage share of energy generation capacity by both coal and RE increase over time. Solar and wind power contribute to the increase in RE. When oil is imported a 1% increase in oil, coal, and gas-based energy generation capacity increases carbon emissions by 1.25%, 1.48% and 0.93%, respectively. 1% increase in RE produces negligible carbon emissions (0.0042%). There was little difference in the percentages of carbon emissions when coal is imported. Substituting any FF with RE of equal energy capacity does not, in the short term, reduce carbon emissions in either scenario. Therefore, we conclude that for long term clean energy prospects in Bangladesh, RE needs to be developed to operate at greater capacity in conjunction with other carbon management factors. The use of energy conservation emission reduction policies to promote industrial restructuring and upgrading and thus facilitate energy conservation and emission reduction is one of the important strategies of environmental management in China. Based on the systematic collection of 1,195 energy conservation emission reduction policies, we discuss the influence of individual measure and measure synergy of energy conservation and emission reduction policies respectively. The results show that the energy conservation and emission reduction policies have a significant effect on the overall promotion of industrial upgrading. The financial measures and guidance measures have a positive impact;the financial measures and guidance measures have significantly positive effect; however, the administrative measures, fiscal tax measures, and other economic measures do the opposite; the positive effect of the synergy of guidance measures and financial measures is greater than the negative effect of considering only the synergy of fiscal tax measures and other economic measures, and significantly greater than the negative effect of the synergy of administrative measures, fiscal tax measures, and other economic measures. We should strengthen and emphasize the use of the measure that has positive effect on industrial structure restructuring and upgrading individually and synergistically. 展开更多

Waste sorting and its effects on carbon emission reduction:Evidence from China

Considering the importance of waste sorting and treatment in the development of an ecological civilization,empirically evaluating the environmental impact of such programs is particularly important.This study uses Xiao'er Township in Gong County,Sichuan Province,China as a case study to analyze and estimate the carbon emission reduction effects of the township's pilot waste sorting program.Using the five-point sampling method,samples of waste are collected,reviewed,and measured for their major components and other key indicators.Additionally,questionnaire surveys and interviews are conducted in the township,along with investigations into existing records and other relevant information.The study adopts the solid waste management-greenhouse gas(SWM-GHG)calculator to study the township data.The case study results imply that proper waste sorting and treatment methods in villages and townships could play a major role in the reduction of carbon emission.Specifically,after implementing waste sorting in Xiao'er,annual carbon emissions were reduced by 2081 tons—equivalent to the electricity consumption of a family of three people for 1718 years,or the amount of CO_(2)emitted by 2641.6L vehicles driving once around the Earth.In the optimal scenario simulation,increasing the recycling of wet waste and recyclable waste further,the level of carbon emission reduction in Xiao'er could reach up to 4482 tons per year.According to the international general carbon trade price,this is equivalent to adding 44,820 US dollars to the GDP,or to an annual saving of 5.71 million kWh.If these waste management methods are expanded to villages and townships across China,then the carbon emissions reduced in a year would be equal to the CO_(2)emitted from electricity generation in Beijing for over a year.Based on these findings,this paper provides three policy recommendations for effective carbon emission reduction:increasing residents'environmental protection awareness over the long term,boosting funding support and enhancing the construction of supporting facilities,and strengthening governance and institutional capacity for waste sorting and treatment. 展开更多

Assessing China’s regional efficiency of energy-saving and emission reduction using the target orientation approach of extended DDF model

Based on the target of energy-saving and emission reduction(ESER)in the national five-year plan in China,an extended directional distance function model(E-DDF)including undesirable input and undesirable output is proposed,and energy-saving efficiency,emission reduction efficiency,ESER efficiency are defined.Then the weighted directional distance function model is constructed for the total factors efficiency index model of ESER to reflect its dynamic change.The results show that the ESER efficiency continues to rise during the three five-year plan periods(2006-2017),and the efficiency score of the east area are higher than those of central and west area.The disparity and change of energy-saving efficiency among difference regions are not obvious,but the disparity and change of emission reduction efficiency are the main reasons for the improvement and change of ESER efficiency index.In the long run,the ESER efficiency is in a dynamic upward trend,and the effect of technological progress is more obvious compared with technical efficient index. 展开更多

The results show that: 1) the improvement of sulfur dioxide emission charge standard can effectively inhibit industrial sulfur dioxide emission, which verifies the existence of environmental effect of pollution levy policies</span><span style="font-family:"">.</span><span style="font-family:""> 2) The improvement of sewage charge standard has better inhibitory effect on sulfur dioxide emission per unit GDP than on sulfur dioxide emission</span><span style="font-family:"">.</span><span style="font-family:""> 3) There is regional heterogeneity in the “emission reduction” effect of sulfur dioxide emission charges in the eastern, central and western regions of China. To guarantee the blue skies for the 2022 Winter Olympics held in Beijing and Zhangjiakou from February 4 to 20,Beijing and its surrounding areas adopted a series of emission control measures.This provides an opportunity to determine the impacts of large-scale temporary control measures on the air quality in Beijing during this special period.Here,we applied the WRF-CMAQ model to quantify the contributions of emission reduction measures and meteorological conditions.Results show that meteorological conditions in 2022 decreased PM_(2.5)in Beijing by 6.9 and 11.8μg/m^(3)relative to 2021 under the scenarios with and without emission reductions,respectively.Strict emission reduction measures implemented in Beijing and seven neighboring provinces resulted in an average decrease of 13.0μg/m^(3)(-41.2%)in PM_(2.5)in Beijing.Over the entire period,local emission reductions contributed more to good air quality in Beijing than nonlocal emission reductions.Under the emission reduction scenario,local,controlled regions,other regions,and boundary conditions contributed 47.7%,42.0%,5.3%,and 5.0%to the PM_(2.5)concentrations in Beijing,respectively.The results indicate that during the cleaning period with the air masses from the northwest,the abatements of PM_(2.5)were mainly caused by local emission reductions.However,during the potential pollution period with the air masses from the east-northeast and west-southwest,the abatements of PM_(2.5)were caused by both local and nonlocal emission reductions almost equally.This implies that regional coordinated prevention and control strategies need to be arranged scientifically and rationally when heavy pollution events are forecasted. 展开更多

The cogeneration system of heat,power,and biogas(CHPB)driven by renewable energy provides an effective solution for carbon emission reduction in rural China.Starting from fully meeting the energy demand of 17 new rural residential households in Lanzhou,considering the annual dynamic local climate change,energy consump-tion characteristics,and environment parameters,a model of environmental benefit index for the CHPB system is constructed.The concept of emission factor is used to quantitatively analyze the environmental benefits of the system.The equivalent CO_(2)emission factor is defined to connect emissions with energy output,evaluating the environment-friendly potential of energy supply system.Compared with the conventional systems of indepen-dent power and thermal generation,the year-round characteristics of CO_(2)emission and emission structure chart of the proposed system are analyzed.The results show that the total CO_(2)emission and the average equivalent CO_(2)emission factors of the conventional and CHPB system are 85.45t,1.53 kg/kWh,and 308.46t,0.22 kg/kWh,respectively.The maximum CO_(2)emission reduction ratio of the CHPB system is 113.47%.Anaerobic digestion technology is employed to consume biomass feedstock,which reduced CH_(4)emission(equivalent to 86.36t of CO_(2)emission reduction).Five typical cities were selected to study the regional adaptability of the system and analyze environmental benefits.The results indicate that the CHPB system has the best environmental performance in Guangzhou,where the average CO_(2)emission reduction rate is 103.52%. 展开更多

Co-occurrence of surface ozone(O_(3))and fine particulate matter(PM_(2.5))pollution(CP)was frequently observed in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei(BTH).More than 50%of CP days occurred during April-May in BTH,and the CP days reached up to 11 in two months of 2018.The PM_(2.5)or O_(3) concentration associated with CP was lower than but close to that in O_(3) and PM_(2.5)pollution,indicating compound harms during CP days with double-high concentrations of PM_(2.5)and O_(3).CP days were significantly facilitated by joint effects of the Rossby wave train that consisted of two centers associated with the Scandinavia pattern and one center over North China as well as a hot,wet,and stagnant environmental condition in BTH.After 2018,the number of CP days decreased sharply while the meteorological conditions did not change significantly.Therefore,changes in meteorological conditions did not really contribute to the decline of CP days in 2019 and 2020.This implies that the reduction of PM_(2.5)emission has resulted in a reduction of CP days(about 11 days in 2019 and 2020).The differences in atmospheric conditions revealed here were helpful to forecast the types of air pollution on a daily to weekly time scale.The reduction in PM_(2.5)emission was the main driving factor behind the absence of CP days in 2020,but the control of surface O_(3) must be stricter and deeper. 展开更多

This study addresses the comparative carbon emissions of different transportation modes within a unified evaluation framework,focusing on their carbon footprints from inception to disposal.Specifically,the entire life cycle carbon emissions of High-Speed Rail(HSR),battery electric vehicles,conventional internal combustion engine vehicles,battery electric buses,and conventional internal combustion engine buses are analyzed.The life cycle is segmented into vehicle manufacturing,fuel or electricity production,operational,and dismantlingrecycling stages.This analysis is applied to the Beijing-Tianjin intercity transportation system to explore emission reduction strategies.Results indicate that HSR demonstrates significant carbon emission reduction,with an intensity of only 24%-32% compared to private vehicles and 47%-89% compared to buses.Notably,HSR travel for Beijing-Tianjin intercity emits only 24% of private vehicle emissions,demonstrating the emission reduction benefits of transportation structure optimization.Additionally,predictive modeling reveals the potential for carbon emission reduction through energy structure optimization,providing a guideline for the development of effective transportation management systems. 展开更多

For achieving air pollutant emission reduction targets,total pollutant amount control is being continuously promoted in China.However,the traditional pattern of pollutant emission reduction allocation regardless of economic cost often results in unreasonable emission reduction pathways,and industrial enterprises as the main implementers have to pay excessively high costs.Therefore,this study adopted economic efficiency as its main consideration,used specific emission reduction measures(ERMs)of industrial enterprises as minimum allocation units,and constructed an enterprise-level pollutant emission reduction allocation(EPERA)model with minimization of the total abatement cost(TAC)as the objective function,and fairness and feasibility as constraints for emission reduction allocation.Taking City M in China as an example,the EPERA model was used to construct a Pareto optimal frontier and obtain the optimal trade-off result.Results showed that under basic and strict emission reduction regulations,the TAC of the optimal trade-off point was reduced by 46.40%and 45.77%,respectively,in comparison with that achieved when only considering fairness,and the Gini coefficient was 0.26 and 0.31,respectively.The abatement target was attained with controllable cost and relatively fair and reasonable allocation.In addition,enterprises allocated different emission reduction quotas under different ERMs had specific characteristics that required targeted optimization of technology and equipment to enable them to achieve optimal emission reduction effects for the same abatement cost. 展开更多

Carbon dioxide(CO_(2))emissions from the road sector have attracted increasing attention in current years.This paper attempted to provide a systematic review of the existing research efforts on road life-cycle CO_(2)emissions by analyzing the system’s boundary division,identifying the CO_(2)emission contributions of each life-cycle phase,listing major emission contributors,exploring related emission reduction technologies,and giving directions for future development.The research showed that the road life cycle is usually divided into five phases:material production,construction,use,maintenance and end-of-life(EOL)phases.The use phase and the initial construction stage(including material production and construction phases)contributed the most CO_(2)emissions during the road life cycle.In detail,the production of cement,asphalt and steel were the three main emission contributors in the material production phase.The pavement roughness,albedo,and concrete carbonation were the main factors affecting emissions in the use phase.In addition,emission reduction technologies such as using recycled materials and recycling techniques,lowering mixing temperature,and equipment energy substitution were commonly used to reduce emissions from material production and construction phases.The application of emerging technologies such as carbon capture and storage,carbon sink,and the use of hydrogen,solar and photovoltaic in the road sector may have emission reduction potentials and should be highlighted more in future studies. 展开更多

In this paper, regulatory and optimum programming model has been adopted. Considering the costs of emission reduction, supervision and penalty, we went all out to analyze the optimal decision of cost efficiency of regulators when implementing these three policy instruments: carbon emission standards, carbon emission trading permissions, and carbon taxes as well. Its result has indicated: In strict accordance with control target of total carbon emissions, regulators are willing to render social and economic cost able to achieve the goal of optimal cost efficiency by regulating carbon emission standards and supervising marginal cost caused by variations in the probability; fortunately, under the conditions of low supervisory cost and certain criteria which is met, the implementation of carbon emission trading permissions could provide social and economic cost with opportunities to realize that objective; through comparative analysis, carbon emission trading permissions have the advantages of higher efficiency than carbon emission standards on the premise of incomplete information. During the implementation of carbon taxes strategy, when there exists uncertainty information in the enterprises reduction behaviors, the condition which enterprises can fully comply with is the tax rate level is not higher than marginal penalty function; the tax rate level of enterprises perfect compliance ought not to be lower than the division of marginal penalty cost and marginal supervisory cost. The optimal strategy of enterprises imperfect compliance is that regulators varying the marginal cost of emission standards is equal to varying that of supervisory probability. 展开更多

Strengthening limonitic nickel laterite sintering and reducing CO_(2) emission were performed by the application of multiforce fields including external thermodynamic and pressure fields.Sinter pot tests of limonitic nickel laterite were carried out,and the relevant industrial production was briefed.The chemistry and mineralogy of product sinter and the thermodynamic and kinetic conditions during sintering were analyzed to reveal the relevant mechanism.The results indicate that sintering performance of limonitic nickel laterite in the new sintering process with multi-force fields is significantly improved with tumble index and productivity increased by 24.11%and 18.56%,respectively,and solid fuel rate reduced by 23.21%,compared with those in traditional sintering process.In this case,greenhouse and pollutant gas emissions are greatly reduced,and metallurgical performances of product sinter are excellent.The industrial production has been successfully conducted,indicating a bright application prospect.Mechanism analysis shows that the great improvement of thermodynamic and kinetic conditions during sintering and the densification of loose sinter can be achieved via the application of multi-force fields.Sinter microstructure is transformed from large thin-wall pores to small thin-wall pores or medium thick-wall pores with the dramatic reduction of sinter porosity and more formation of silico-ferrite of calcium and alumina(SFCA).Meanwhile,the homogenization of mineral compositions is achieved,and much denser interlocking texture between hercynite and SFCA is formed.The application of multi-force fields contributes to the substantial improvement of sintering performance of limonitic nickel laterite and CO_(2) emission reduction. 展开更多
