This paper presents a mathematical model consisting of conservation and balance laws (CBL) of classical continuum mechanics (CCM) and ordered rate constitutive theories in Lagrangian description derived using entropy inequality and the representation theorem for thermoviscoelastic solids (TVES) with rheology. The CBL and the constitutive theories take into account finite deformation and finite strain deformation physics and are based on contravariant deviatoric second Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor and its work conjugate covariant Green’s strain tensor and their material derivatives of up to order m and n respectively. All published works on nonlinear dynamics of TVES with rheology are mostly based on phenomenological mathematical models. In rare instances, some aspects of CBL are used but are incorrectly altered to obtain mass, stiffness and damping matrices using space-time decoupled approaches. In the work presented in this paper, we show that this is not possible using CBL of CCM for TVES with rheology. Thus, the mathematical models used currently in the published works are not the correct description of the physics of nonlinear dynamics of TVES with rheology. The mathematical model used in the present work is strictly based on the CBL of CCM and is thermodynamically and mathematically consistent and the space-time coupled finite element methodology used in this work is unconditionally stable and provides solutions with desired accuracy and is ideally suited for nonlinear dynamics of TVES with memory. The work in this paper is the first presentation of a mathematical model strictly based on CBL of CCM and the solution of the mathematical model is obtained using unconditionally stable space-time coupled computational methodology that provides control over the errors in the evolution. Both space-time coupled and space-time decoupled finite element formulations are considered for obtaining solutions of the IVPs described by the mathematical model and are presented in the paper. Factors or the physics influencing dynamic response and dynamic bifurcation for TVES with rheology are identified and are also demonstrated through model problem studies. A simple model problem consisting of a rod (1D) of TVES material with memory fixed at one end and subjected to harmonic excitation at the other end is considered to study nonlinear dynamics of TVES with rheology, frequency response as well as dynamic bifurcation phenomenon. 展开更多

The stability analysis of a finite Stokes layer is of practical importance in flow control. In the present work, the instantaneous stability of a finite Stokes layer with layer interactions is studied via a linear stability analysis of the frozen phases of the base flow. The oscillations of two plates can have different velocity amplitudes, initial phases, and frequencies. The effects of the Stokes-layer interactions on the stability when two plates oscillate synchronously are analyzed. The growth rates of two most unstable modes when δ < 0.12 are almost equal, and δ = δ*/h*, where δ*and h*are the Stokes-layer thickness and the half height of the channel, respectively. However, their vorticities are different. The vorticity of the most unstable mode is symmetric, while the other is asymmetric. The Stokes-layer interactions have a destabilizing effect on the most unstable mode when δ < 0.68, and have a stabilizing effect when δ > 0.68. However, the interactions always have a stabilizing effect on the other unstable mode. It is explained that one of the two unstable modes has much higher dissipation than the other one when the Stokes-layer interactions are strong. We also find that the stability of the Stokes layer is closely related to the inflectional points of the base-flow velocity profile. The effects of inconsistent velocity-amplitude, initial phase, and frequency of the oscillations on the stability are analyzed. The energy of the most unstable eigenvector is mainly distributed near the plate of higher velocity amplitude or higher oscillation frequency. The effects of the initial phase difference are complicated because the base-flow velocity is extremely sensitive to the initial phase. 展开更多

A new approach for flexoelectricmaterial shape optimization is proposed in this study. In this work,a proxymodel based on artificial neural network(ANN)is used to solve the parameter optimization and shape optimization problems. To improve the fitting ability of the neural network,we use the idea of pre-training to determine the structure of the neural network and combine different optimizers for training. The isogeometric analysis-finite element method(IGA-FEM)is used to discretize the flexural theoretical formulas and obtain samples, which helps ANN to build a proxy model from the model shape to the target value. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through two numerical examples of parameter optimization and one numerical example of shape optimization. 展开更多

This paper theoretically studies the axisymmetric frictionless indentation of a transversely isotropic piezoelectric semiconductor(PSC)half-space subject to a rigid flatended cylindrical indenter. The contact area and other surface of the PSC half-space are assumed to be electrically insulating.By the Hankel integral transformation, the problem is reduced to the Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. This equation is solved numerically to obtain the indentation behaviors of the PSC half-space,mainly including the indentation force-depth relation and the electric potential-depth relation. The results show that the effect of the semiconductor property on the indentation responses is limited within a certain range of variation of the steady carrier concentration. The dependence of indentation behavior on material properties is also analyzed by two different kinds of PSCs.Finite element simulations are conducted to verify the results calculated by the integral equation technique, and good agreement is demonstrated. 展开更多

Semiconductor devices are often operated at elevated temperatures that are well above zero Kelvin, which is the temperature in most first-principles density functional calculations.Computational approaches to com-puting and understanding the properties of semiconductors at finite temperatures are thus in critical demand. In this review,we discuss the recent progress in computationally assessing the electronic and phononic band structures of semiconductors at finite temperatures. As an emerging semiconductor with particularly strong temperature-induced renormalization of the electronic and phononic band structures, halide perovskites are used as a representative example to demonstrate how computational advances may help to understand the band struc-tures at elevated temperatures. Finally,we briefly illustrate the remaining computational challenges and outlook promising research directions that may help to guide future research in this field. 展开更多

The surrounding geological conditions and supporting structures of underground engineering are often updated during construction, and these updates require repeated numerical modeling. To improve the numerical modeling efficiency of underground engineering,a modularized and parametric modeling cloud server is developed by using Python codes. The basic framework of the cloud server is as follows:input the modeling parameters into the web platform, implement Rhino software and FLAC3D software to model and run simulations in the cloud server, and return the simulation results to the web platform. The modeling program can automatically generate instructions that can run the modeling process in Rhino based on the input modeling parameters. The main modules of the modeling program include modeling the 3D geological structures, the underground engineering structures, and the supporting structures as well as meshing the geometric models. In particular, various cross-sections of underground caverns are crafted as parametricmodules in themodeling program.Themodularized and parametric modeling program is used for a finite element simulation of the underground powerhouse of the Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station. This complicatedmodel is rapidly generated for the simulation, and the simulation results are reasonable. Thus, this modularized and parametric modeling program is applicable for three-dimensional finite element simulations and analyses. 展开更多

The variation of the principal stress of formations with the working and geo-mechanical conditions can trigger wellbore instabilities and adversely affect the well completion.A finite element model, based on the theory of poro-elasticity and the Mohr-Coulomb rock damage criterion,is used here to analyze such a risk. The changes in wellbore stability before and after reservoir acidification are simulated for different pressure differences. The results indicate that the risk of wellbore instability grows with an increase in the production-pressure difference regardless of whether acidification is completed or not;the same is true for the instability area. After acidizing, the changes in the main geomechanical parameters(i.e.,elastic modulus,Poisson’s ratio, and rock strength)cause the maximum wellbore instability coefficient to increase. 展开更多

The present paper first investigates the collapse behavior of a conventional pipe-framed greenhouse under snow loading based on a 3-D finite element analysis,in which both geometrical and material non-linearities are considered.Three snow load distribution patterns related to the wind-driven snow particle movement are used in the analysis. It is found that snow load distribution affects the deformation and collapse behavior of the pipe-framed greenhouse significantly. The results obtained in this study are consistent with the actual damage observed.Next, discussion is made of the effects of reinforcements by adding members to the basic frame on the strength of the whole structure,in which seven kinds of reinforcement methods are examined.A buckling analysis is also carried out.The results indicate that the most effective reinforcement method depends on the snow load distribution pattern. 展开更多

The energy norm convergence rate of the finite element solution of the heat equation is reduced by the time-regularity of the exact solution. This paper presents an adaptive finite element treatment of time-dependent singularities on the one-dimensional heat equation. The method is based on a Fourier decomposition of the solution and an extraction formula of the coefficients of the singularities coupled with a predictor-corrector algorithm. The method recovers the optimal convergence rate of the finite element method on a quasi-uniform mesh refinement. Numerical results are carried out to show the efficiency of the method. 展开更多

The present work proposed a new method for the modeling by the finite element method of the acoustic propagation problems in infinite axisymmetric cylindrical guides lined with locally reacting absorbent materials without flow. The method deals with the development of an efficient transparent boundary condition based on DtN operators. The method developed in this study is successfully applied to a straight axisymmetric lined guide by imposing a mode on one of the artificial boundaries of the truncated guide. The results are in good agreement with analytical solutions. Applying the method for a non-uniform axisymmetric lined guide which is a complex case, proved its effectiveness and the results compared to those of PML layers are in very good agreement. 展开更多

The paper presents our contribution to the full 3D finite element modelling of a hybrid stepping motor using COMSOL Multiphysics software. This type of four-phase motor has a permanent magnet interposed between the two identical and coaxial half stators. The calculation of the field with or without current in the windings (respectively with or without permanent magnet) is done using a mixed formulation with strong coupling. In addition, the local high saturation of the ferromagnetic material and the radial and axial components of the magnetic flux are taken into account. The results obtained make it possible to clearly observe, as a function of the intensity of the bus current or the remanent induction, the saturation zones, the lines, the orientations and the magnetic flux densities. 3D finite element modelling provide more accurate numerical data on the magnetic field through multiphysics analysis. This analysis considers the actual operating conditions and leads to the design of an optimized machine structure, with or without current in the windings and/or permanent magnet. 展开更多

This paper presents the mathematical model consisting of conservation and balance laws (CBL) of classical continuum mechanics (CCM) and the constitutive theories derived using entropy inequality and representation theorem for thermoviscoelastic solids (TVES) matter without memory. The CBL and the constitutive theories take into account finite deformation and finite strain deformation physics. This mathematical model is thermodynamically and mathematically consistent and is ideally suited to study nonlinear dynamics of TVES and dynamic bifurcation and is used in the work presented in this paper. The finite element formulations are constructed for obtaining the solution of the initial value problems (IVPs) described by the mathematical models. Both space-time coupled as well as space-time decoupled finite element methods are considered for obtaining solutions of the IVPs. Space-time coupled finite element formulations based on space-time residual functional (STRF) that yield space-time variationally consistent space-time integral forms are considered. This approach ensures unconditional stability of the computations during the entire evolution. In the space-time decoupled finite element method based on Galerkin method with weak form for spatial discretization, the solutions of nonlinear ODEs in time resulting from the decoupling of space and time are obtained using Newmark linear acceleration method. Newton’s linear method is used to obtain converged solution for the nonlinear system of algebraic equations at each time step in the Newmark method. The different aspects of the deformation physics leading to the factors that influence nonlinear dynamic response and dynamic bifurcation are established using the proposed mathematical model, the solution method and their validity is demonstrated through model problem studies presented in this paper. Energy methods and superposition techniques in any form including those used in obtaining solutions are neither advocated nor used in the present work as these are not supported by calculus of variations and mathematical classification of differential operators appearing in nonlinear dynamics. The primary focus of the paper is to address various aspects of the deformation physics in nonlinear dynamics and their influence on dynamic bifurcation phenomenon using mathematical models strictly based on CBL of CCM using reliable unconditionally stable space-time coupled solution methods, which ensure solution accuracy or errors in the calculated solution are always identified. Many model problem studies are presented to further substantiate the concepts presented and discussed in the paper. Investigations presented in this paper are also compared with published works when appropriate. 展开更多

Percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation of an injured nerve can promote and accelerate peripheral nerve regeneration and improve function. When performing acupuncture and moxibustion, locating the injured nerve using ultrasound before percutaneous nerve stimulation can help prevent further injury to an already injured nerve. However, stimulation parameters have not been standardized. In this study,we constructed a multi-layer human forearm model using finite element modeling.Taking current density and activated function as optimization indicators, the optimal percutaneous nerve stimulation parameters were established. The optimal parameters were parallel placement located 3 cm apart with the injury site at the midpoint between the needles. To validate the efficacy of this regimen,we performed a randomized controlled trial in 23 patients with median nerve transection who underwent neurorrhaphy.Patients who received conventional rehabilitation combined with percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation experienced greater improvement in sensory function, motor function, and grip strength than those who received conventional rehabilitation combined with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. These findings suggest that the percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation regimen established in this study can improve global median nerve function in patients with median nerve transection. 展开更多

Isothermal hot compression experiments were conducted on homogenized Mg-8.5Gd-4.5Y-0.8Zn-0.4Zr alloy to investigate hot deformation behavior at the temperature range of 673-773 K and the strain rate range of 0.001-1 s^(-1)by using a Gleeble-1500D thermo mechanical simulator.Metallographic characterization on samples deformed to true strain of 0.70 illustrates the occurrence of flow localization and/or microcrack at deformation conditions of 673 K/0.01 s^(-1),673 K/1 s^(-1)and 698 K/1 s^(-1),indicating that these three deformation conditions should be excluded during hot working of homogenized Mg-8.5Gd-4.5Y-0.8Zn-0.4Zr alloy.Based on the measured true stress-strain data, the strain-compensated Arrhenius constitutive model was constructed and then incorporated into UHARD subroutine of ABAQUS software to study hot deformation process of homogenized Mg-8.5Gd-4.5Y-0.8Zn-0.4Zr alloy.By comparison with measured force-displacement curves, the predicted results can describe well the rheological behavior of homogenized Mg-8.5Gd-4.5Y-0.8Zn-0.4Zr alloy, verifying the validity of finite element simulation of hot compression process with this complicated constitutive model.Numerical results demonstrate that the distribution of values of material parameters(α,n,Q and ln A)within deformed sample is inhomogeneous. This issue is directly correlated to the uneven distribution of equivalent plastic strain due to the friction effect. Moreover,at a given temperature the increase of strain rate would result in the decrease of equivalent plastic strain within the central region of deformed sample, which hinders the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization(DRX). 展开更多

The comprehensive tire building and shaping processes are investigated through the finite element method(FEM)in this article. The mechanical properties of the uncured rubber from different tire components are investigated through cyclic loading-unloading experiments under different strain rates.Based on the experiments,an elastoviscoplastic constitutive model is adopted to describe themechanical behaviors of the uncured rubber. The distinct mechanical properties, including the stress level, hysteresis and residual strain,of the uncured rubber can all be well characterized. The whole tire building process(including component winding, rubber bladder inflation, component stitching and carcass band folding-back)and the shaping process are simulated using this constitutive model. The simulated green tire profile is in good agreement with the actual profile obtained through 3D scanning. The deformation and stress of the rubber components and the cord reinforcements during production can be obtained fromthe FE simulation, which is helpful for judging the rationality of the tire construction design. Finally, the influence of the parameter“drum width”is investigated, and the simulated result is found to be consistent with the experimental observations, which verifies the effectiveness of the simulation. The established simulation strategy provides some guiding significance for the improvement of tire design parameters and the elimination of tire production defects. 展开更多

Hydrogels with their time-dependent intrinsic behaviors have recently been used widely in soft structures as sensors/actuators.One of the most interesting structures is the bilayer made up of hydrogels which may undergo swelling-induced bending. In this work,by proposing a semi-analytical method, the transient bending of hydrogel-based bilayers is investigated.Utilizing nonlinear solid mechanics,a robust semi-analytical solution is developed which captures the transient finite bending of hydrogel-based bilayers. Moreover, the multiphysics model of the hydrogels is implemented in the finite element method(FEM) framework to verify the developed semi-analytical procedure results. The effects of different material properties are investigated to illustrate the nonlinear behavior of these structures. The von-Mises stress contour extracted from FEM shows that the critical area of these soft structures is at the interface of the layers which experiences the maximum stress, and this area is most likely to rupture in large deformations. 展开更多

In this study,an iterative-based three-dimensional finite element lower bound in association with the second-order cone programming method is adopted to evaluate the limit load of a single pile embedded in cross-anisotropic soils under general loading condition. The lower bound solutions of the pile embedded in an anisotropic soil deposit can be found by formulating the element equilibrium, equilibrium of shear and normal stresses along discontinuities, boundary conditions, yield function, and optimizing the objective function through the second-order cone programming method in conjunction with an iterative-based update procedure.A general loading condition is considered to profile the expansion of the safe load in the vertical-horizontal-moment(V-H-M)space.The results of this study are compared and validated against three different cases including an isotropic lateral loading, anisotropic end bearing capacity, and a pile embedded in an isotropic soil deposit under general loading condition.A parametric study is conducted to evaluate the impact of different influencing factors. It was found that the effect of anisotropy on the variation of lateral limit load of a single pile is more pronounced than the corresponding vertical and bending moment limit loads, whereas the interface properties have more significant effects on the vertical and bending moment limit loads in comparison to the lateral limit load. 展开更多

The surface of lotus leaves has a hierarchical micro–nano-rough structure. We determined that the papillary structure also possesses hierarchical features on the microscale. We used alumina particles as rough structure building units to construct a Hierarchical Papillary microrough Structure(HPS)on a ceramic surface. The effects of the spatial distribution of HPS on the abrasion resistance and mechanical stability of hydrophobic coatings were investigated.Furthermore, for each HPS,the falling sand abrasion process was analyzed using finite element fluid mechanics analysis.A denser or more two-dimensional HPS implied that more area was impacted by the falling sand and that the abrasion amount and rate were higher. This is contrary to the common belief that when there are more wear-resistant substances on the surface, the abrasion resistance is better;thus, abrasion resistance does not necessarily depend entirely on the concentration of wear-resistant substances on the surface, but it is also influenced by the abrasion mode and the spatial distribution structure of the wear-resistant substances. The 3D stacked HPS(3D-HPS)with excellent abrasion resistance and rich pore structure considerably enhanced the mechanical stability of the hydrophobic coatings. These findings provide novel insights and a theoretical basis for designing spatial structures on high abrasion-resistant superhydrophobic ceramic surfaces. 展开更多
