In this work, the suitability of using Kaolin-Rice husk-plastic clay to produce insulating firebrick was experimentally investigated and the optimal ratio of these constituents determined. Ten brick samples of different compositions were fired at 1200℃. Three of the samples (samples 6, 7, and 8) crumbled during firing. The surviving samples gave the following limits of results: shrinkage: 9.7%-13.6%; effective moisture content: 28.34%-32.52%; modulus of rupture: 4.26kgf/cm 2-19.10kgf/cm 2; apparent porosity: 56%-95.93%; water absorption: 42.27%-92.12%; bulk density: 1.04g/cm 3-1.41g/cm 3; apparent density: 2.56g/cm 3-5.77g/cm 3; and thermal conductivity: 0.005W/mK 0.134W/mK. The results showed that they all had good insulating characteristics. Samples 1-5 and 10 showed good level of refractoriness, while mixing ratio of 4:1:2 (representing weight in grams of Kaolin, plastic clay and rice husk respectively) for sample 4 gave the optimum performance values in terms of refractoriness, thermal conductivity, modulus of rupture, shrinkage and bulk density and the effective moisture content. 展开更多

This paper reports the modeling of residual compressive strength of fired clay bricks submitted to elevated temperature. Five formulations were used and the explored temperatures were 95˚C, 200˚C, 550˚C, 700˚C and 950˚C. The stress–strain relationships and the mechanical properties (including Young’s modulus and compressive strength) were assessed using a uniaxial compressive strength machine. A proposed model equation was established and found satisfying. The elastic modulus was evaluated and tested with one existing model together with two proposed models. The proposed model was both satisfying and even more precise than the existing one. The overall results show that the effect of temperature on the mechanical properties of clays can be accurately described through the definition of thermal damage using elastic modulus. 展开更多

Clay materials from Thicky in Thiès district (Senegal) are very abundant and could be used for the production of clay brick for the construction industry in Senegal and the surrounding countries. The geophysical, geotechnical, and thermal studies carried out did lead to a better comprehension of the potential of the area for clay production. It also allowed determining the physical and chemical characteristics of the clays for their use in order to make fired clay bricks. Different types of fired clay brick were produced with Thicky’s clays. The study of the physical, mechanical and thermal parameters of these raw materials and bricks has given very satisfactory results compared to the standards in use. It is noted a good ceramic behavior, and there is no deterioration observed after firing at 900&deg;C until low residual moisture of about 3% (on a dry basis), a smooth texture with a beautiful appearance, a low loss on ignition, a low shrinkage value of less than 1% (dry), moderate water absorption and also good compressive strength. The study of thermal properties on a brick wall by the asymmetric lime plane method gives satisfactory effusivity and thermal conductivity values which are respectively equal to 746.48 J<span style="white-space:nowrap;"><span style="white-space:nowrap;">&middot;</span></span>K-1<span style="white-space:nowrap;"><span style="white-space:nowrap;">&middot;</span></span>m-2<span style="white-space:nowrap;">&middot;</span>s-1/2 and 0.42 W<span style="white-space:nowrap;"><span style="white-space:nowrap;">&middot;</span></span>m-1<span style="white-space:nowrap;"><span style="white-space:nowrap;">&middot;</span></span>k-1 with a thermal resistance of 0.0028 m2<span style="white-space:nowrap;"><span style="white-space:nowrap;">&middot;</span></span>K<span style="white-space:nowrap;"><span style="white-space:nowrap;">&middot;</span></span>W-1. 展开更多

High cost has been pointed among factors that limit the promotion of geopolymers. To contribute to the reduction of the use of costly industrial sodium silicate in activators for geopolymers, a gel obtained with RHA and concentrated sodium hydroxide was used in the present study to develop an alkaline activator with 8 M NaOH and to produce geopolymers with crushed fired clay bricks wastes (FCBW). Characteristics of the gel were compared to that of commercial sodium silicate which was also mixed with 8 M NaOH in the ratio 1:1 to produce geopolymers. Chemical and mineralogical analyses were done on raw materials. Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was done on the gel, commercial sodium silicate and products. Biaxial four point flexural strength, bulk density, water absorption and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests were also done on products. Results showed that RHA-NaOH alkaline activator has good potential in consolidating FCBW powder through geopolymerization process which gave products that had characteristics not far from that when the commercial sodium silicate was used. The gel obtained by mixing RHA and NaOH can contribute to the reduction of the use of costly commercial sodium silicate in the production process of geopolymers. However, appropriate filtration process is needed for the RHA-NaOH gel to reduce its impurities as undissolved entities, which will consequently contribute to improve the flexural strength, the density and the microstructure of its products which were low compared to when commercial sodium silicate was used. 展开更多

Corrosion effect of ladle furnace (LF) refining slag on fired MgO-CaO bricks with about 34% CaO was studied by static crucible method, and corrosion mechanism was analyzed by techniques of scan electron micrograph, energy dispersive spectrometer, and X-ray diffraction. The results show that: MgO-CaO bricks exhibit excellent corrosion resistance but poor penetration resistance to LF refining slag; oxidation of (Mg·Fe)O in reaction zone results in volume expansion forming cracks; penetration of 2CaO·Fe2O3 (C2F) from slag to MgO-CaO bricks increases liquid phases which accelerates corrosion of the bricks; a protective layer of 2CaO·SiO2 formed on reaction interface prevents penetration of C2F to the bricks. 展开更多

The effect of compositions of saw dust admixture on thermal conductivity and other mechanical/refractory properties of Ifon Clay was investigated. The raw clay gotten from Ifon in Ondo state was first processed to very fine particles and characterized using SEM/EDX, XRD and XRF. Sawdust from mahogany tree procured from a saw mill in Akure the State capital of Ondo State was also dried to remove moisture present. A composite mixture of this dried saw dust with the processed clay was made at various proportions of the saw dust, with a little addition of water for plasticity. Sam- ples of cylindrical dimensions were then produced from the mounting press by the process of compaction with a very high pressure. The samples were dried and then finally fired in the furnace at 1000?C for a final curing. Properties which include thermal shock resistance, bulk density, cold crushing strength, thermal conductivity and porosity were obtained by the appropriate standard test methods. The microstructures of the fired samples were also characterized with SEM using back scattered secondary imaging. The results show that the amount of sawdust admixture affects the properties variously;porosity increases with percentage increase in sawdust admixture while the thermal conductivity and other properties of the sample reduce with percentage increase in sawdust admixture. It was concluded that for structural insulating bricks where compressive strength is important the sawdust admixture should not exceed 10 to 15 percent. 展开更多

In establishing a plant or factory, the cost-benefit analysis is needed to determine the viability for such financial investment on the project. In this paper, the cost establishing a factory of 200,000 bricks per annum capacity, for the production of high quality refractory bricks from locally available raw materials in Nigeria was evaluated. The evaluation was conducted on the virgin refractory material (100%) as well as with varied percentages (10% - 40%) of alumina additions. The result of cost benefit analysis indicated that, the project was viable, with the highest cost at N1,203.66 per brick as against N1,800 (at 3 years projections) of the imported brick. The payback period for the capital investment was very short (within two years). The findings will aid investors in decision makings. 展开更多

The cartography and characterization of an alluvial clay deposit from Ebebda (Central region of Cameroon) were carried out in order to assess its suitability for the production of fired clay bricks. The clayey area investigated is ~ 50,000 m2 with an average thickness of the exploitable layer of 2.2 m, suggesting a deposit of about ~2.2 × 105 tonnes of clay. Mineralogy, physico-chemical and thermal analyses as well as firing properties were performed on representative clay samples. Kaolinite and quartz are the major minerals associated to illite. Upon heating to 900℃ - 1200℃, the linear shrinkage varies from 1.5% to 15%, the water absorption from 1.5% to 24% and the bending strength from 2 to 12 MPa. The admixture of lateritic clays (widely available) at 50%, 60%, 70% and 80% allow to decrease the shrinkage and bending strength, and to increase the water absorption. Overall, properties were satisfying the requirement for fired brick with 70% of laterite in the mixture. 展开更多

Fuzhuan brick-tea(FZT)has long been consumed for its supposed weight loss and lipid-lowering benefi ts.In this study,we show that the regulation of fat storage in Caenorhabditis elegans from a water extract of FZT was affected by cholesterol levels. We found that FZT signifi cantly decreased fat storage under normal cholesterol levels or in a cholesterol-free diet, while lipid accumulation was increased for a high cholesterol diet. Moreover, this mechanism may involve the conserved sterol regulatory element-binding protein(SREBP)/mediator-15(MDT-15)signaling pathway and the nuclear hormone receptor NHR-80.In addition, lipid synthesis-related genes inhibited by FZT were partially affected by a cholesterol-free diet. Thus, our fi ndings suggested that the potential lipid-lowering effects of FZT may depend on the cholesterol level, which may help to improve the consumption of FZT. 展开更多

MgO-ZrO2 unfired bricks with ZrO2 content up to 8% at the interval of 2% were prepared, using fused magnesia(MgO:97%)and fused MgO-ZrO2 clinker(ZrO2:14.33%)as starting materials and phenolic resin as binder. The effects of ZrO2 content on thermal shock resistance(TSR)and other properties such as cold and hot modulus of rupture have been investigated.Residual cold modulus of rupture ratio after heating at 1 000 ℃ and quenching by air blowing was adopted to characterize TSR.Addition of the MgO-ZrO2 clinker improves TSR,attributing to the microcrack toughening effect by thermal expansion mismatch between different phases. When ZrO2 content goes above 4%,the improving effect tends to be moderate. The introduction of MgO-ZrO2 clinker can also improve the HMOR at 1 500 ℃,while the increased ZrO2 content reduces CMOR of the bricks prefired at 1 600 ℃,due to the thermal expansion mismatch effect.Compromising the overall properties, the optimal ZrO2 content for such magnesia based unfired brick is suggested to be 4%. 展开更多

The cost of coal is high and is increasing continuously. This paper describes the effect of alternate fuels on compressive strength, water absorption and density of fired clay bricks. The alternate fuels used in this study were 1) rapeseed husk (Type I), 2) combination of sugarcane-bagasse, rice husk and used clothes (Type II) and 3) coal (Type III). The results show that compressive strength of bricks fired using Type I and Type II fuels was decreased to 11% and 7%, respectively, compared to those fired with coal. However, the values of water absorption and density of bricks fired with Type I and Type II fuels were almost same as exhibited by those baked with coal. This study shows that a saving of 25%, and 18% could be achieved when the bricks were fired using Type I and Type II fuels, respectively, compared to those fired with coal. 展开更多

Taking an industrial sludge and its preparation of sludge wrap shell aggregates(WSAs)instead of sand to prepare baking-free brick as the research object, the development law of mechanical properties and the influence mechanism of macro and micro characteristic parameters of the bricks under different sludge and WSAs replacement rates were studied through the macroscopic mechanical properties test, with the help of nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR),transmission electron microscopy-energy spectrum and other testing technology and pores and cracks analysis system(PCAS)software. The results showed that the compressive strength of each sample decreased with the increase of sludge content. When the sludge content was less than 30%,it was mainly affected by the water-binder ratio. When the sludge content was more than 30%,it was mainly affected by the sludge content. At the age of 7 days, with the increase in replacement rate of WSAs,the compressive strength of the S10 and S30 groups was higher than that of the control group. The compressive strength of the S50 experimental group was 30.38 MPa,and the loss of compressive strength was slight compared with the control group. The water absorption rate of the 28 days S100 experimental group increased by 10.71%compared with the control group. When the content of WSAs was less than 50%,the holes above 0.1μm in the brick can be reduced and transformed into smaller holes, with a decreasing trend of the plane porosity of the brick. The microscopic results of the baking-free brick showed that the three-phase system of WSAs-interface transition area-mortar was poorly bonded and delaminated compared with the gravel aggregate-interface transition area-mortar system, and damage was more likely to occur in the WSAs and interface transition area. The above results show that it is feasible to use sludge and WSAs instead of sand for the preparation of baking-free bricks. This technology not only solves the problem of sludge disposal, but also protects the over-exploitation of mineral resources, and the technology has a broad application prospect and market value. 展开更多

Due to differences in the properties of composition materials and construction techniques, unreinforced masonry is characterized by low strength, anisotropy, nonuniformity, and low ductility. In order to accurately simulate the mechanical behavior of unreinforced brick masonry walls under static and dynamic loads,a new elastoplastic damage constitutive model was proposed and the corresponding subroutine was developed based on the concrete material constitutive model. In the proposed constitutive model, the Rankine strength theory and the Drucker-Prager strength theory were used to define the tensile and compressive yield surface function of materials, respectively. Moreover, the stress updating algorithm was modified to consider the tensile plastic permanent deformation of masonry materials. To verify the accuracy of the proposed constitutive model, numerical simulations of the brick masonry under monotonic and cyclic uniaxial tension and compression loads were carried out.Comparisons among the numerical and theoretical and experimental results show that the proposed model can properly reflect the masonry material mechanical properties.Furthermore, the numerical models of four pieces of masonry walls with different mortar strengths were established.Low cyclic loadings were applied and the results show that the proposed constitutive model can properly simulate the wall shear failure characteristics, and the force-displacement hysteretic curves obtained by numerical simulation are in good agreement with the tests.Overall, the proposed elastic-plastic damage constitutive model can simulate the nonlinear behavior of unreinforced brick masonry walls very well, and can be used to predict the structural response of masonry walls. 展开更多

Fixed-bed operating experimental column conditions were studied to evaluate the performance of brick from Bangui Region (in Central African Republic), coated with iron oxyhydroxide (ferrihydrite) for the removal of iron(II) from aqueous solution. The prediction of theoretical breakthrough profiles using Bohart and Adams sorption model was employed to achieve characteristic parameters such as depth of exchange zone, time required for exchange zone to move vertically, moving rate for the exchange zone and adsorption capacity useful for fixed-bed column reactor was investigated under varying operating conditions. The effects of bed depth and flow rate on iron(II) adsorption were studied. Our finding revealed that the Brick from Bangui Region (in Central African Republic), coated with ferrihydrite was a very efficient media for the removal of Fe(II) ions from water. The experimental data showed that the depth and the moving rate (10.3 ± 0.6 cm) and (0.208 ± 0.006 cm/min) respectively of the exchange zone (adsorption zone) were independent of variability of the height of the adsorbent bed column, however the variations of the flow rate affect the moving rate of the exchange zone. The bed depth service time (BDST) model was used and permitted us to predict the service times of columns operated at various flow rates and bed depths and these predicted values were compared with the experimental values. 展开更多

Conversion-type fluoride cathode can provide considerable energy density for Li batteries, however its scalable and facile synthesis strategies are still lacking. Here,a novel Fe-based deep eutectic solvent composed of nitrite and methylsulfonylmethane is proposed as both the reaction medium and precursor to synthesize O-doped FeF3porous bricks. This method is cheaper, safe, mildly operable, environmentally friendly and recyclable for non-fluorinated metal cations. The homogenization of charge and mass transport in cathode network effectively mitigates the volume extrusion and electrode coarsening even for the micro-sized monolithic particles. The Co-solvation modulated fluoride cathode delivers high reversible capacity in a wide temperature range(486 and 235 mA h g^(-1)at 25℃ and-20℃ respectively),excellent rate performance(312 mA h g^(-1)at 1000 mA g^(-1)),corresponding to an energy density as high as672.1 W h kg^(-1)under a power density of 2154.3 W kg^(-1).The successful operation of fluoride pouchcell with a capacity exceeding 450 mA h g^(-1)(even under thin Li foil and lean electrolyte conditions) indicates its potentiality of commercial application. 展开更多

The current study deals Swith thermo-mechanical properties of stabilized soil small bricks with the help of organic binders of sugar cane molasses and cassava starch. Different formulations of soil concrete have been suggested after the geotechnical characterization of samples of soil was taken. From these, it arises that the studied soil is the most plastically clay (of type A3) according to GTR classification. Samples made of small bricks and measured out at 4%, 6% and 8% of binders (molasses, starch or molasses + starch) have been warmed up to different temperatures (100°C, 150°C, 200°C and 250°C) for the rising of the thermic behavior under different conditions and submitted to crushing testings for the estimation of characteristic resistances to the compression. According to the mechanical behavior, we note an improvement of resistances for small bricks measured 4%, 6% and 8%, of molasses respectively of 32.44%, 32.06% and 23.43% against the value of reference for small bricks without molasses. In the same way, the binder (molasses + starch) also reveals an improvement of resistance to the compression of 13.27%, 26.17% and 26.17%. On the contrary, the stabilization with the starch binder did not bring a significative improvement. According to the thermic influence, the heating at 100°C of stabilized small bricks at 4%, 6% and 8% of molasses, reveals a significative improvement of resistances. Moreover, the stabilization with the starch reveals on the contrary a good behavior for heatings at 150°C and 250°C. In short, for the binder (molasses + starch), it is the heating at 200°C that shows some improvements of remarkable resistances. Different analyses of realized statistics also show the effectivity of obtained results. For all realized formulations, the measuring out at 6% of binders (molasses, or molasses + starch) seems as optimal in front of the best thermo-mechanical revealed properties. 展开更多

The testing load was fixed at 0.069 MPa and the total testing time was within 6 h including the holding time of 1.5 h.The hot load deformation process of insulating fireclay bricks can be divided into three steps: (1) expansion step from room temperature to RUL T max ; (2) quick shrinkage step between RUL T max and T test ; 3) relatively slow shrinkage step during holding process. The deformation rate at the beginning of holding process (D0 h )should be controlled within ±0.1%. The hot load deformation testing temperature of insulating fireclay bricks was optimized as the value of RUL T max plus 220 ℃. 展开更多

The present work investigated the effect of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic waste on the physico-mechanical and thermal properties of cement-stabilized laterite bricks to see the durability of the modified bricks (CSLB). Samples were formulated by mixing laterite, cement, and different percentages of PET (0%, 3%, 5%, and 7%) by volume. The bricks were produced using the M7MI Hydraform standard interlocking block and kept in the shade for a curing period of 28 days. The addition of 3% to 5% PET to the laterite stabilized with 10% cement results in a decrease in both dry and wet compressive strength, which is determined using the Controlab compression machine. However, the obtained results are in concordance with the standards. The thermal conductivity of CSLB, determined using the box method with the EI700 measurement cell, decreases as the PET content of the mixture increases. A decrease in bulk density from 1.67 to 1.58 g/cm3 was observed. 展开更多
