Natural fibers have been extensively researched as reinforcement materials in polymers on account of their environmental and economic advantages in comparison with synthetic fibers in the recent years.Bamboo fibers are renowned for their good mechanical properties, abundance, and short cycle growth. As beams are one of the fundamental structural components and are susceptible to mechanical loads in engineering applications, this paper performs a study on the free vibration and buckling responses of bamboo fiber reinforced composite(BFRC)beams on the elastic foundation.Three different functionally graded(FG)layouts and a uniform one are the considered distributions for unidirectional long bamboo fibers across the thickness. The elastic properties of the composite are determined with the law of mixture.Employing Hamilton’s principle, the governing equations of motion are obtained. The generalized differential quadrature method(GDQM)is then applied to the equations to obtain the results. The achieved outcomes exhibit that the natural frequency and buckling load values vary as the fiber volume fractions and distributions, elastic foundation stiffness values, and boundary conditions(BCs)and slenderness ratio of the beam change.Furthermore,a comparative study is conducted between the derived analysis outcomes for BFRC and homogenous polymer beams to examine the effectiveness of bamboo fibers as reinforcement materials, demonstrating the significant enhancements in both vibration and buckling responses, with the exception of natural frequencies for cantilever beams on the Pasternak foundation with the FG-◇fiber distribution.Eventually, the obtained analysis results of BFRC beams are also compared with those for carbon nanotube reinforced composite(CNTRC)beams found in the literature, indicating that the buckling loads and natural frequencies of BFRC beams are lower than those of CNTRC beams. 展开更多

Sandwiched functionally-graded piezoelectric semiconductor(FGPS)plates possess high strength and excellent piezoelectric and semiconductor properties, and have significant potential applications in micro-electro-mechanical systems. The multi-field coupling and free vibration of a sandwiched FGPS plate are studied, and the governing equation and natural frequency are derived with the consideration of electron movement. The material properties in the functionally-graded layers are assumed to vary smoothly, and the first-order shear deformation theory is introduced to derive the multi-field coupling in the plate. The total strain energy of the plate is obtained, and the governing equations are presented by using Hamilton’s principle.By introducing the boundary conditions, the coupling physical fields are solved. In numerical examples, the natural frequencies of sandwiched FGPS plates under different geometrical and physical parameters are discussed. It is found that the initial electron density can be used to modulate the natural frequencies and vibrational displacement of sandwiched FGPS plates in the case of nano-size.The effects of the material properties of FGPS layers on the natural frequencies are also examined in detail. 展开更多

A fractional-order thermo-elastic model taking into account the small-scale effects of the thermo-elastic coupled behavior is developed to study the free vibration of a higher-order shear microplate. The nonlocal strain gradient theory is modified with the introduction of the fractional-order derivatives and the nonlocal characteristic length. The Fourier heat conduction is replaced by the non-Fourier heat conduction with the introduction of the fractional order and the memory characteristic time.Numerical calculations are performed to analyze the effects of the nonlocal strain gradient parameters, the spatiotemporal fractional order, the nonlocal characteristic length, and the memory characteristic time on the natural frequencies, the vibration attenuation, and the phase shift between the temperature field and the displacement field. The numerical results show that the new thermo-elastic model with the spatiotemporal fractional order can provide more exquisite descriptions of the thermo-elastic behavior at a small scale. 展开更多

The bending and free vibration of porous functionally graded(PFG)beams resting on elastic foundations are analyzed. The material features of the PFG beam are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness according to the volume fraction of components. The foundation medium is also considered to be linear, homogeneous, and isotropic, and modeled using the Winkler-Pasternak law.The hyperbolic shear deformation theory is applied for the kinematic relations, and the equations of motion are obtained using the Hamilton’s principle. An analytical solution is presented accordingly, assuming that the PFG beam is simply supported.Comparisons with the open literature are implemented to verify the validity of such a formulation. The effects of the elastic foundations, porosity volume percentage and span-to-depth ratio are finally discussed in detail. 展开更多

In this paper, the main researches are focused on the horizontal nonlinear vibration characteristics of roll systems for rolling mill, mainly including the study of forced vibration and free vibration of the roller.Firstly, the nonlinear damping parameters and nonlinear stiffness parameters within interface of the rolling mill are both considered, and a fractional-order differential term is also introduced to model the horizontal nonlinear vibration.Secondly, the averaging method is introduced to solve the forced vibration system of the mill roll system, and the amplitude-frequency characteristic curves of the system are obtained for different orders, external excitation amplitudes, stiffness and fractional order coefficients.Thirdly, the amplitude-frequency and phasefrequency characteristics of the free vibration of the mill roll system are investigated at different fractional orders. Then, the accuracy of the averaging method for solving the dynamic characteristics of the system is verified by numerical analysis, and the effect of the fractional differential term coefficients and order on the dynamic characteristics of the roll system are investigated. Finally, the time-frequency characteristics and phase-frequency characteristics of free vibration systems at different fractional orders are studied. The validity of the theoretical study is also verified through experiments. 展开更多

Based on Kirchhoff plate theory and the Rayleigh-Ritz method, the model for free vibration of rectangular plate with rectangular cutouts under arbitrary elastic boundary conditions is established by using the improved Fourier series in combination with the independent coordinate coupling method(ICCM).The effect of the cutout is taken into account by subtracting the energies of the cutouts from the total energies of the whole plate. The vibration displacement function of the hole domain is based on the coordinate system of the hole domain in this method. From the continuity condition of the vibration displacement function at the cutout, the transition matrix between the two coordinate systems is constructed, and the mass and stiffness matrices are completely obtained. As a result, the calculation is simplified and the computational efficiency of the solution is improved. In this paper, numerical examples and modal experiments are presented to validate the effectiveness of the modeling methods, and parameters related to influencing factors of the rectangular plate are analyzed to study the vibration characteristics. 展开更多

In this paper, the nonlinear free vibration behaviors of the piezoelectric semiconductor(PS) doubly-curved shell resting on the Pasternak foundation are studied within the framework of the nonlinear drift-diffusion(NLDD) model and the first-order shear deformation theory. The nonlinear constitutive relations are presented, and the strain energy, kinetic energy, and virtual work of the PS doubly-curved shell are derived.Based on Hamilton's principle as well as the condition of charge continuity, the nonlinear governing equations are achieved, and then these equations are solved by means of an efficient iteration method. Several numerical examples are given to show the effect of the nonlinear drift current, elastic foundation parameters as well as geometric parameters on the nonlinear vibration frequency, and the damping characteristic of the PS doublycurved shell. The main innovations of the manuscript are that the difference between the linearized drift-diffusion(LDD) model and the NLDD model is revealed, and an effective method is proposed to select a proper initial electron concentration for the LDD model. 展开更多

The free vibration of functionally graded material(FGM) beams is studied based on both the classical and the first-order shear deformation beam theories. The equations of motion for the FGM beams are derived by considering the shear deformation and the axial, transversal, rotational, and axial-rotational coupling inertia forces on the assumption that the material properties vary arbitrarily in the thickness direction.By using the numerical shooting method to solve the eigenvalue problem of the coupled ordinary differential equations with different boundary conditions, the natural frequencies of the FGM Timoshenko beams are obtained numerically. In a special case of the classical beam theory, a proportional transformation between the natural frequencies of the FGM and the reference homogenous beams is obtained by using the mathematical similarity between the mathematical formulations. This formula provides a simple and useful approach to evaluate the natural frequencies of the FGM beams without dealing with the tension-bending coupling problem. Approximately, this analogous transition can also be extended to predict the frequencies of the FGM Timoshenko beams. The numerical results obtained by the shooting method and those obtained by the analogous transformation are presented to show the effects of the material gradient, the slenderness ratio, and the boundary conditions on the natural frequencies in detail. 展开更多

An analytical method for the three-dimensional vibration analysis of a functionally graded cylindrical shell integrated by two thin functionally graded piezoelectric(FGP) layers is presented. The first-order shear deformation theory is used to model the electromechanical system. Nonlinear equations of motion are derived by considering the von Karman nonlinear strain-displacement relations using Hamilton's principle. The piezoelectric layers on the inner and outer surfaces of the core can be considered as a sensor and an actuator for controlling characteristic vibration of the system. The equations of motion are derived as partial differential equations and then discretized by the Navier method. Numerical simulation is performed to investigate the effect of different parameters of material and geometry on characteristic vibration of the cylinder. The results of this study show that the natural frequency of the system decreases by increasing the non-homogeneous index of FGP layers and decreases by increasing the non-homogeneous index of the functionally graded core. Furthermore, it is concluded that by increasing the ratio of core thickness to cylinder length, the natural frequencies of the cylinder increase considerably. 展开更多

Free vibration response of functionally graded material(FGM) beams is studied based on the Levinson beam theory(LBT). Equations of motion of an FGM beam are derived by directly integrating the stress-form equations of elasticity along the beam depth with the inertial resultant forces related to the included coupling and higherorder shear strain. Assuming harmonic response, governing equations of the free vibration of the FGM beam are reduced to a standard system of second-order ordinary differential equations associated with boundary conditions in terms of shape functions related to axial and transverse displacements and the rotational angle. By a shooting method to solve the two-point boundary value problem of the three coupled ordinary differential equations, free vibration response of thick FGM beams is obtained numerically. Particularly, for a beam with simply supported edges, the natural frequency of an FGM Levinson beam is analytically derived in terms of the natural frequency of a corresponding homogenous Euler-Bernoulli beam. As the material properties are assumed to vary through the depth according to the power-law functions, the numerical results of frequencies are presented to examine the effects of the material gradient parameter, the length-to-depth ratio, and the boundary conditions on the vibration response. 展开更多

The main purpose of this paper is to present numerical results of static bending and free vibration of functionally graded porous(FGP) variable-thickness plates by using an edge-based smoothed finite element method(ES-FEM) associate with the mixed interpolation of tensorial components technique for the three-node triangular element(MITC3), so-called ES-MITC3. This ES-MITC3 element is performed to eliminate the shear locking problem and to enhance the accuracy of the existing MITC3 element. In the ES-MITC3 element, the stiffness matrices are obtained by using the strain smoothing technique over the smoothing domains formed by two adjacent MITC3 triangular elements sharing an edge. Materials of the plate are FGP with a power-law index(k) and maximum porosity distributions(U) in the forms of cosine functions. The influences of some geometric parameters, material properties on static bending, and natural frequency of the FGP variable-thickness plates are examined in detail. 展开更多

The bending and free vibrational behaviors of functionally graded(FG)cylindrical beams with radially and axially varying material inhomogeneities are investigated.Based on a high-order cylindrical beam model, where the shear deformation and rotary inertia are both considered, the two coupled governing differential motion equations for the deflection and rotation are established. The analytical bending solutions for various boundary conditions are derived. In the vibrational analysis of FG cylindrical beams, the two governing equations are firstly changed to a single equation by means of an auxiliary function, and then the vibration mode is expanded into shifted Chebyshev polynomials.Numerical examples are given to investigate the effects of the material gradient indices on the deflections, the stress distributions, and the eigenfrequencies of the cylindrical beams, respectively.By comparing the obtained numerical results with those obtained by the three-dimensional(3D)elasticity theory and the Timoshenko beam theory, the effectiveness of the present approach is verified. 展开更多

A novel symplectic superposition method has been proposed and developed for plate and shell problems in recent years. The method has yielded many new analytic solutions due to its rigorousness. In this study, the first endeavor is made to further developed the symplectic superposition method for the free vibration of rectangular thin plates with mixed boundary constraints on an edge. The Hamiltonian system-based governing equation is first introduced such that the mathematical techniques in the symplectic space are applied. The solution procedure incorporates separation of variables, symplectic eigen solution and superposition. The analytic solution of an original problem is finally obtained by a set of equations via the equivalence to the superposition of some elaborated subproblems. The natural frequency and mode shape results for representative plates with both clamped and simply supported boundary constraints imposed on the same edge are reported for benchmark use.The present method can be extended to more challenging problems that cannot be solved by conventional analytic methods. 展开更多

In the present study, the static and dynamic analyses of elliptical functionally graded sandwich(FGS)plates are investigated. The constituent materials of the sandwich plates are ceramic and metal so that the core is made of pure metal, while the face sheets consist of a combination of metal and ceramic according to a four-parameter power-law distribution.Different material profiles such as classic, symmetric, and asymmetric can be obtained using the applied generalized power-law distribution relation. The analysis is performed based on the classical laminated plate theory(CLPT)and the Ritz method. The effects of four parameters in the material distribution relation as well as different geometric parameters on the deflection and natural frequencies of elliptical FGS plates are studied. The results of this study show that with a proper distribution of materials, the optimal static and dynamic behavior can be achieved. The results also indicate that the generalized power-law distribution has significant effects on the natural frequencies of elliptical FGS plates. For example, although the frequency parameter of a plate with ceramic face sheets is more than the one with metal face sheets, the use of larger amounts of ceramic does not necessarily increase the natural frequency of the structure. 展开更多

A new procedure is proposed to ease the analyses of the free vibration of an elastically connected identical plates system with respect to Kirchhoff plate theory.A structure of n parallel, elastically connected rectangular plates is of concern, whereby the motion is explained by a set of n coupled partial differential equations. The method involves a new change in variables to uncouple equations and form an equal system of n decoupled plates, while each is assumed to be elastically connected to the ground. The differential quadrature method is adopted to solve the decoupled equations. To unravel the original system, the inverse transform is applied.Decoupling the equations enables one to solve them based on the solution methods available for a single plate system. This also diminishes the computational costs of such problems.By considering different boundary conditions,a case study is run to present the method and to validate the results with its counterparts, for which excellent agreement is observed.Assessing the influence of dimensionless thickness, aspect ratio, and stiffness coefficients on the frequencies reveals the different effects of them at the low order of dimensionless natural frequencies in comparison with high orders and for different boundary conditions. 展开更多

The aim of the present study is to investigate the nonlinear free vibration of spinning cylindrical shells under spinning and arbitrary boundary conditions.Artificial springs are used to simulate arbitrary boundary conditions.Sanders’shell theory is employed, and von Kármán nonlinear terms are considered in the theoretical modeling.By using Chebyshev polynomials as admissible functions, motion equations are derived with the Ritz method. Then,a direct iteration method is used to obtain the nonlinear vibration frequencies. The effects of the circumferential wave number, the boundary spring stiffness, and the spinning speed on the nonlinear vibration characteristics of the shells are highlighted. It is found that there exist sensitive intervals for the boundary spring stiffness, which makes the variation of the nonlinear frequency ratio more evident. The decline of the frequency ratio caused by the spinning speed is more significant for the higher vibration amplitude and the smaller boundary spring stiffness. 展开更多
