The research examines President Xi’s 2021 New Year speech with research questions centering around its abundant interpersonal meanings.Through qualitative content analysis,the research finds that it is typical for Ch...The research examines President Xi’s 2021 New Year speech with research questions centering around its abundant interpersonal meanings.Through qualitative content analysis,the research finds that it is typical for Chinese president to frequently use judgment and appreciation resources in reviewing the past year.Even in the face of the pandemic and natural disasters,the overall emotions of the speech remain positive,which corresponds to the forward-looking feature of New Year speech.Significance of the study abounds and future research can investigate how COVID-19 impacts the ideologies conveyed through political leaders’speeches through a comparative lens and how to produce more understandings that can help dismantle stereotypes and discrimination hidden in reports about COVID-19 by using Appraisal Theory critically,systematically,and comprehensively.展开更多

This paper investigates the interpersonal meanings in Chinese cosmetic advertising discourse from mood, modality and appraise the three aspects. Based on an exploratory study of data of six typical Chinese cosmetic advertising discourses, the paper claims that the distribution of mood and modality has close link with the interpersonal meaning in advertising. This paper adopts Halliday’s systemic functional grammar as the theoretical framework to make a contrastive analysis of the interpersonal meaning of Environmental Protection Public Service Advertising from the perspe...This paper adopts Halliday’s systemic functional grammar as the theoretical framework to make a contrastive analysis of the interpersonal meaning of Environmental Protection Public Service Advertising from the perspective of mood and modality.It is found that there are both similarities and differences in the realization of interpersonal meaning in the discourse of both English and Chinese environmental protection public service advertising.In terms of mood,both tend to use declarative,imperative,interrogative mood,among which the declarative mood is the most frequently used,while the imperative mood is the second.In the aspect of modality,the use of modal words in English environmental protection advertising language is more abundant,and it is customary to use modal words with low emotional value to realize interpersonal meaning,while Chinese advertisements prefer more modality words with high emotional value.展开更多

This study investigates the language strategies adopted by the major British political parties in their 2010 general election man-ifestoes to persuade and influence the public in order to win their support.The way in ...This study investigates the language strategies adopted by the major British political parties in their 2010 general election man-ifestoes to persuade and influence the public in order to win their support.The way in which interpersonal meanings are expressed in thetexts is examined in accordance with the three aspects of modality as outlined in Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar:orientation,value and type.Corresponding with these three aspects,it is found that subjective orientation,median value,and obligation are used ex-tensively by all three parties for persuasive purposes.This demonstrates that modal choices are conditioned or determined by the writers' communicative intentions and by non-linguistic factors such as their social positions and political stances.展开更多
