This work evaluated pumpkin and potato peel biowastes for the adsorption of cadmium ions. The biowastes were treated with acid or base. Batch experiments were carried out by introducing a known concentration of metal ion solution into the biowaste sorbent at various pH levels. The pH and metal ion concentration was monitored with pH and cadmium ion-selective electrode continuously for two hours, and the final concentration for the metal ion after 24 hours was measured with the cadmium electrode and then confirmed with ICP-OES. L-type isotherms were obtained that fit to Freundlich model. Adsorption isotherms showed chemical adsorption and the kinetics following the second order model. Equilibrium adsorption capacity is higher than 29 mg/g at pH 5.6 when the initial concentration is 220 ppm. Dynamic cadmium adsorption capacity is 17 mg/g from aqueous solution when the feed solution is 220 ppm with pumpkin peel biowaste sorbent. The biowaste materials can be regenerated with acid washing.展开更多

The all solid-state sensors were constructed by the application of a thin film of a polymer cocktail containing a phthalocyanine ionophore and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMAB) as a lipophilic cationic additive onto a gold electrode precoated with the conducting polymer poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) as an ion and electron transducer. The sensor with 10.3% of ionophore (III) covalently attached to plasticizer-free poly (butyl methacrylate-co-do- decyl methacrylate) (PBDA) exhibited a good selectivity for perchlorate and discriminated many ions, in- cluding F–, Cl–, Br–, I–, SCN–, , S2– and . The covalent attachment of the ionophore to the polymer resulted in a near-Nernstian anionic slope of –62.3 mV/decade whereas a super-Nernstian slope of –79.9 mV/ decade was obtained for the free ionophore. The sensor covered a linear concentration range of 5 × 10–9 - 1 × 10–2 mol?L–1 with a lower detection limit (LDL) of 1 × 10–9 mol?L–1 and gave a stable response over a pH range of 4 - 10.5. The all-solid state sensors were utilized for the selective flow injection potentiometric determination of perchlorate in natural water and human urine samples in the nanomolar concentration range.展开更多

A chemically modified carbon paste electrode (CMCPE) for pethidine hydrochloride (PDCl) based on pethidine-phosphotungstate (PD-PT) as ion-pair complex was prepared and fully character-ized in terms of composition, usable pH range, response time and temperature. The pethidine electrode showed Nernstain responses in the concentration range 2.1 × 10–6-1.0 × 10–2 M with a detection limit of 7.3 × 10-7 and usable within the pH range 3.5-6.6. This sensor exhibited a fast response time (about 5-8 s), good stability. The value (dE/dt) of the electrode was found to be 0.00071 V/?C, which indicates fairly high ther-mal stability. Selectivity coefficients determined by matched potential method (MPM) and separate solution method (SSM) showed high selectivity for PDCl with respect to a large number of inorganic cations, organic cations, sugars and some common drug excipients. The sensor could be used successfully in the estimation of PDCl in ampoules and in spiked urine samples.展开更多

The experimental data were treated according to Klotz equation, and the number of binding sites and the binding constants were determined. The results show that the binding sites of F– on protein molecules are more than those of Br– and I–. Additionally, the number of the binding sites for halide ions on protein molecules increases with increasing temperature. This study also indicates that the binding constants for the interactions of halide ions with proteins gradually decrease as the size of halide ions and temperature increases. These behaviors were reasonably interpreted with the structural and thermodynamic factors. The thermodynamic functions at different temperatures were calculated with thermodynamic equations, and the enthalpy change for the interactions were also determined by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) at 298.15 K, which indicate that the interactions of halide ions with proteins are mainly electrostatic interaction.展开更多

The galvanic corrosion of the Q-phase/Al couple was found to be dependent on pH and immersion time. Current density maps obtained by SVET shows that the anodic oxidation processes emerge from Al in a localized manner in pH 2 and 6 solutions but is initiated in a uniform manner in pH 13 solution, whereas, the cathodic processes are more homogeneously distributed over the Q-phase at pH 2.6 and 13. It is seen that the Q-phase remains cathodic in the Q-phase/Al couple in acidic, neutral and alkaline solutions indicating that the galvanic polarity of the Q-phase is independent of pH. The effect of the galvanic corrosion was largest at pH 2 and 13 compared to pH 6. The pH map obtained by SIET indicates that the galvanic activity of the Q-phase/Al couple proceeds via heavy alkalization of the Q-phase surface with the generation of appreciable amounts of OH~ ions. The enrichment of Cu indicated by EDX is responsible for the observed cathodic activity of the Q-phase in the Q-phase/Al couple.展开更多

The electrode selectivity is controlled mainly by the extractibility or hydrophobicity of the metal ion, but not by the ion-association-complex formation process. Linear relationship exists between the pKij value and the structural parameter z2/(r + 0.85) and the thermodynamic parameter of hydration (△Gh) of the metal ion. Better correlation is obtained for the pKijvs. (z2/r)-k relationship.展开更多
