The primary factor contributing to frequency instability in microgrids is the inherent intermittency of renewable energy sources.This paper introduces novel dual-backup controllers utilizing advanced fractional order proportional integral derivative(FOPID)controllers to enhance frequency and tie-line power stability in microgrids amid increasing renewable energy integration.To improve load frequency control,the proposed controllers are applied to a two-area interconnectedmicrogrid system incorporating diverse energy sources,such as wind turbines,photovoltaic cells,diesel generators,and various storage technologies.A novelmeta-heuristic algorithm is adopted to select the optimal parameters of the proposed controllers.The efficacy of the advanced FOPID controllers is demonstrated through comparative analyses against traditional proportional integral derivative(PID)and FOPID controllers,showcasing superior performance inmanaging systemfluctuations.The optimization algorithm is also evaluated against other artificial intelligent methods for parameter optimization,affirming the proposed solution’s efficiency.The robustness of the intelligent controllers against system uncertainties is further validated under extensive power disturbances,proving their capability to maintain grid stability.The dual-controller configuration ensures redundancy,allowing them to operate as mutual backups,enhancing system reliability.This research underlines the importance of sophisticated control strategies for future-proofing microgrid operations against the backdrop of evolving energy landscapes. 展开更多

From the perspective of a community energy operator,a two-stage optimal scheduling model of a community integrated energy system is proposed by integrating information on controllable loads.The day-ahead scheduling analyzes whether various controllable loads participate in the optimization and investigates the impact of their responses on the operating economy of the community integrated energy system(IES)before and after;the intra-day scheduling proposes a two-stage rolling optimization model based on the day-ahead scheduling scheme,taking into account the fluctuation of wind turbine output and load within a short period of time and according to the different response rates of heat and cooling power,and solves the adjusted output of each controllable device.The simulation results show that the optimal scheduling of controllable loads effectively reduces the comprehensive operating costs of community IES;the two-stage optimal scheduling model can meet the energy demand of customers while effectively and timely suppressing the random fluctuations on both sides of the source and load during the intra-day stage,realizing the economic and smooth operation of IES. 展开更多

Reliable load frequency control LFC is crucial to the operation and design of modern electric power systems. Considering the LFC problem of a four-Area interconnected power system with wind turbines, this paper presents a distributed model predictive control DMPC based on coordination scheme. The proposed algorithm solves a series of local optimization problems to minimize a performance objective for each control area. The generation rate constraints GRCs, load disturbance changes, and the wind speed constraints are considered. Furthermore, the DMPC algorithm may reduce the impact of the randomness and intermittence of wind turbine effectively. A performance comparison between the proposed controller with and without the participation of the wind turbines is carried out. Analysis and simulation results show possible improvements on closed-loop performance, and computational burden with the physical constraints. © 2014 Chinese Association of Automation. 展开更多

This paper addresses a terminal sliding mode control(T-SMC) method for load frequency control(LFC) in renewable power systems with generation rate constraints(GRC).A two-area interconnected power system with wind turbines is taken into account for simulation studies. The terminal sliding mode controllers are assigned in each area to achieve the LFC goal. The increasing complexity of the nonlinear power system aggravates the effects of system uncertainties. Radial basis function neural networks(RBF NNs) are designed to approximate the entire uncertainties. The terminal sliding mode controllers and the RBF NNs work in parallel to solve the LFC problem for the renewable power system. Some simulation results illustrate the feasibility and validity of the presented scheme. 展开更多

In the last decades the voltage regulation has been challenged by the increase of power variability in the electric grid,due to the spread of non-dispatchable generation sources.This paper introduces a Smart Transformer(ST)-based Medium Voltage(MV)grid support by means of active power control in the ST-fed Low Voltage(LV)grid.The aim of the proposed strategy is to improve the voltage profile in MV grids before the operation of On-Load Tap Changer in the primary substation transformer,which needs tens of seconds.This is realized through reactive power injection by the AC/DC MV converter and simultaneous decrease of the active power consumption of voltage-dependent loads in ST-fed LV grid,controlling the ST output voltage.The last feature has two main effects:the first is to reduce the active power withdrawn from MV grid,and consequently the MV voltage drop caused by the active current component.At the same time,higher reactive power injection capability in the MV converter is unlocked,due to the lower active power demand.As result,the ST increases the voltage support in MV grid.The analysis and simulation results carried out in this paper show improvements compared to similar solutions,i.e.the only reactive power compensation.The impact of the proposed solution has been finally evaluated under different voltage-dependence of the loads in the LV grid. 展开更多

During this decade,many countries have experienced natural and accidental disasters,such as typhoons,floods,earthquakes,and nuclear plant accidents,causing catastrophic damage to infrastructures.Since the end of 2019,all countries of the world are struggling with the COVID-19 and pursuing countermeasures,including inoculation of vaccine,and changes in our lifestyle and social structures.All these experiences have made the residents in the affected regions keenly aware of the need for new infrastructures that are resilient and autonomous,so that vital lifelines are secured during calamities.A paradigm shift has been taking place toward reorganizing the energy social service management in many countries,including Japan,by effective use of sustainable energy and new supply schemes.However,such new power sources and supply schemes would affect the power grid through intermittency of power output and the deterioration of power quality and service.Therefore,new social infrastructures and novel management systems to supply energy and social service will be required.In this paper,user-friendly design,operation and control assist tools for resilient microgrids and autonomous communities are proposed and applied to the standard microgrid to verify its effectiveness and performance. 展开更多

This paper designs a decentralized resilient H_(∞)load frequency control(LFC)scheme for multi-area cyber-physical power systems(CPPSs).Under the network-based control framework,the sampled measurements are transmitted through the communication networks,which may be attacked by energylimited denial-of-service(DoS)attacks with a characterization of the maximum count of continuous data losses(resilience index).Each area is controlled in a decentralized mode,and the impacts on one area from other areas via their interconnections are regarded as the additional load disturbance of this area.Then,the closed-loop LFC system of each area under DoS attacks is modeled as an aperiodic sampled-data control system with external disturbances.Under this modeling,a decentralized resilient H_(∞)scheme is presented to design the state-feedback controllers with guaranteed H∞performance and resilience index based on a novel transmission interval-dependent loop functional method.When given the controllers,the proposed scheme can obtain a less conservative H_(∞)performance and resilience index that the LFC system can tolerate.The effectiveness of the proposed LFC scheme is evaluated on a one-area CPPS and two three-area CPPSs under DoS attacks. 展开更多

Guan River Estuary and adjacent coastal area(GREC) suffer from serious pollution and eutrophicational problems over the recent years.Thus,reducing the land-based load through the national pollutant total load control program and developing hydrodynamic and water quality models that can simulate the complex circulation and water quality kinetics within the system,including longitudinal and lateral variations in nutrient and COD concentrations,is a matter of urgency.In this study,a three-dimensional,hydrodynamic,water quality model was developed in GREC,Northern Jiangsu Province.The complex three-dimensional hydrodynamics of GREC were modeled using the unstructured-grid,finite-volume,free-surface,primitive equation coastal ocean circulation model(FVCOM).The water quality model was adapted from the mesocosm nutrients dynamic model in the south Yellow Sea and considers eight compartments:dissolved inorganic nitrogen,soluble reactive phosphorus(SRP),phytoplankton,zooplankton,detritus,dissolved organic nitrogen(DON),dissolved organic phosphorus(DOP),and chemical oxygen demand.The hydrodynamic and water quality models were calibrated and confirmed for 2012 and 2013.A comparison of the model simulations with extensive dataset shows that the models accurately simulate the longitudinal distribution of the hydrodynamics and water quality.The model can be used for total load control management to improve water quality in this area. 展开更多

In this study,a bald eagle optimizer(BEO)is used to get optimal parameters of the fractional-order proportional-integral-derivative(FOPID)controller for load frequency control(LFC).SinceBEOtakes only a very short time in finding the optimal solution,it is selected for designing the FOPID controller that improves the system stability and maintains the frequency within a satisfactory range at different loads.Simulations and demonstrations are carried out using MATLAB-R2020b.The performance of the BEOFOPID controller is evaluated using a two-zone interlinked power system at different loads and under uncertainty of wind and solar energies.The robustness of the BEO-FOPID controller is examined by testing its performance under varying system time constants.The results obtained by the BEOFOPID controller are compared with those obtained by BEO-PID and PID controllers based on recent metaheuristics optimization algorithms,namely the sine-cosine approach,Jaya approach,grey wolf optimizer,genetic algorithm,bacteria foraging optimizer,and equilibrium optimization algorithm.The results confirm that the BEO-FOPID controller obtains the finest result,with the lowest frequency deviation.The results also confirm that the BEOFOPID controller is stable and robust at different loads,under varying system time constants,and under uncertainty of wind and solar energies. 展开更多

A CMOS active mixer based on voltage control load technique which can operate at 1.0 V supply voltage was proposed, and its operation principle, noise and linearity analysis were also presented. Contrary to the conventional Gilbert-type mixer which is based on RF current-commutating, the load impedance in this proposed mixer is controlled by the LO signal, and it has only two stacked transistors at each branch which is suitable for low voltage applications. The mixer was designed and fabricated in 0.18 tam CMOS process for 2.4 GHz ISM band applications. With an input of 2.44 GHz RF signal and 2.442 GHz LO signal, the measurement specifications of the proposed mixer are: the conversion gain (Gc) is 5.3 dB, the input-referred third-order intercept point (PIIP3) is 4.6 dBm, the input-referred 1 dB compression point (P1dB) is --7.4 dBm, and the single-sideband noise figure (NFSSB) is 21.7 dB. 展开更多

A reliable approach based on a multi-verse optimization algorithm(MVO)for designing load frequency control incorporated in multi-interconnected power system comprising wind power and photovoltaic(PV)plants is presented in this paper.It has been applied for optimizing the control parameters of the load frequency controller(LFC)of the multi-source power system(MSPS).The MSPS includes thermal,gas,and hydro power plants for energy generation.Moreover,the MSPS is integrated with renewable energy sources(RES).The MVO algorithm is applied to acquire the ideal parameters of the controller for controlling a single area and a multi-area MSPS integrated with RES.HVDC link is utilized in shunt with AC multi-areas interconnection tie line.The proposed scheme has achieved robust performance against the disturbance in loading conditions,variation of system parameters,and size of step load perturbation(SLP).Meanwhile,the simulation outcomes showed a good dynamic performance of the proposed controller. 展开更多

Moreover, the characteristic when the cable linear velocity variation causes change of tension is investigated, and a compound control strategy is proposed. Each joint of hydraulic drive quadruped robot is driven by the hydraulic drive unit(HDU), and the contacting between the robot foot end and the ground is complex and variable, which increases the difficulty of force control inevitably. In the recent years, although many scholars researched some control methods such as disturbance rejection control, parameter self-adaptive control, impedance control and so on, to improve the force control performance of HDU, the robustness of the force control still needs improving. Therefore, how to simulate the complex and variable load characteristics of the environment structure and how to ensure HDU having excellent force control performance with the complex and variable load characteristics are key issues to be solved in this paper. The force control system mathematic model of HDU is established by the mechanism modeling method, and the theoretical models of a novel force control compensation method and a load characteristics simulation method under different environment structures are derived, considering the dynamic characteristics of the load stiffness and the load damping under different environment structures. Then, simulation effects of the variable load stiffness and load damping under the step and sinusoidal load force are analyzed experimentally on the HDU force control performance test platform, which provides the foundation for the force control compensation experiment research. In addition, the optimized PID control parameters are designed to make the HDU have better force control performance with suitable load stiffness and load damping, under which the force control compensation method is introduced, and the robustness of the force control system with several constant load characteristics and the variable load characteristics respectively are comparatively analyzed by experiment. The research results indicate that if the load characteristics are known, the force control compensation method presented in this paper has positive compensation effects on the load characteristics variation, i.e., this method decreases the effects of the load characteristics variation on the force control performance and enhances the force control system robustness with the constant PID parameters, thereby, the online PID parameters tuning control method which is complex needs not be adopted. All the above research provides theoretical and experimental foundation for the force control method of the quadruped robot joints with high robustness. 展开更多

This article provides a survey of recently emerged methods for wind turbine control. Multivariate control approaches to the optimization of power capture and the reduction of loads in components under time-varying turbulent wind fields have been under extensive investigation in recent years. We divide the related research activities into three categories: modeling and dynamics of wind turbines, active control of wind turbines, and passive control of wind turbines. Regarding turbine dynamics, we discuss the physical fundamentals and present the aeroelastic analysis tools. Regarding active control, we review pitch control, torque control, and yaw control strategies encompassing mathematical formulations as well as their applications toward different objectives. Our survey mostly focuses on blade pitch control, which is considered one of the key elements in facilitating load reduction while maintaining power capture performance. Regarding passive control, we review techniques such as tuned mass dampers, smart rotors, and microtabs. Possible future directions are suggested. 展开更多

Most intelligent methods use two-</span><span style="font-family:;" "=""> </span><span style="font-family:;" "=""><span style="font-family:Verdana;">input fuzzy controllers, but because such controllers are expensive, there is </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">economic interest in the relatively cheaper single-input controllers. A n</span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">on-</span></span><span style="font-family:;" "=""> </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">linear control model based on one-input fuzzy logic PI (FLPI) controller was developed and applied to control the non-linear SHP. Using MATLAB/Si</span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">- </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">mulink SimScape, the SHP was simulated with linear and non-linear plant models. The performance of the FLPI controller was investigated and compared with that of the conventional PI/PID controller. Results show that the settling time for the FLPI controller is about 8 times shorter;while the overshoot is about 15 times smaller compared to the conventional PI/PID controller. Therefore, the FLPI controller performs better than the conventional PI/PID controller not only in meeting the LFC control objective but also in ensuring increased dynamic stability of SHPs.</span> 展开更多

However, controllable or dispatchable loads such as electric vehicles (EVs) and heat pumps (HPs) can be utilized for supplementary frequency control. This paper shows the ability of plug-in hybrid EVs, HPs, and batteries (BTs) to contribute in the frequency control of an isolated power system. Moreover, we propose a new online intelligent approach by using a coefficient diagram method (CDM) to enhance the system performance and robustness against uncertainties. The performance of the proposed intelligent CDM control has been compared with the proportional-integral (PI) controller and the superiority of the proposed scheme has been verified in Matiab/Simulink programs. 展开更多

Reestablishment in power system brings in significant transformation in the power sector by extinguishing the possession of sound consolidated assistance.However,the collaboration of various manufacturing agencies,autonomous power manufacturers,and buyers have created complex installation processes.The regular active load and inefficiency of best measures among varied associates is a huge hazard.Any sudden load deviation will give rise to immediate amendment in frequency and tie-line power errors.It is essential to deal with every zone’s frequency and tie-line power within permitted confines followed by fluctuations within the load.Therefore,it can be proficient by implementing Load Frequency Control under the Bilateral case,stabilizing the power and frequency distinction within the interrelated power grid.Balancing the net deviation in multiple areas is possible by minimizing the unbalance of Bilateral Contracts with the help of proportional integral and advanced controllers like Harris Hawks Optimizer.We proposed the advanced controller Harris Hawk optimizer-based model and validated it on a test bench.The experiment results show that the delay time is 0.0029 s and the settling time of 20.86 s only.This model can also be leveraged to examine the decision boundaries of the Bilateral case. 展开更多

With the rapid economic growth and improved living standards,electricity has become an indispensable energy source in our lives.Therefore,the stability of the grid power supply and the conservation of electricity is critical.The following are some of the problems facing now:1)During the peak power consumption period,it will pose a threat to the power grid.Enhancing and improving the power distribution infrastructure requires high maintenance costs.2)The user’s electricity schedule is unreasonable due to personal behavior,which will cause a waste of electricity.Controlling load as a vital part of incentive demand response(DR)can achieve rapid response and improve demand-side resilience.Maintaining load by manually formulating rules,some devices are selective to be adjusted during peak power consumption.However,it is challenging to optimize methods based on manual rules.This paper uses SoftActor-Critic(SAC)as a control algorithm to optimize the control strategy.The results show that through the coordination of the SAC to control load in CityLearn,realizes the goal of reducing both the peak load demand and the operation costs on the premise of regulating voltage to the safe limit. 展开更多
